Chapter 3: A Divine Intervention
In a dimly lit room, Eli sat in meditation, seeking guidance in the wake of the tumultuous events surrounding Xena and her amnesia. The air around him seemed to shimmer, and a radiant figure materialized before him. It was the angel of Callisto, her ethereal presence illuminating the space.
"Eli," Callisto's voice was gentle, yet imbued with an urgency that commanded attention. "I have come to show you the path that must be taken."
Eli opened his eyes, gazing at the angel with a mix of reverence and curiosity. "Callisto," he whispered, "why have you come to me?"
Callisto raised her hand, and a vision began to unfold in the air between them. Scenes from the past, present, and potential futures played out like a celestial tapestry. Eli saw the battles Xena and Ares had fought, the moments of passion and betrayal, the struggles that had defined their existence.
He watched as Ares killed him, a moment of profound sacrifice where the God of War chose mortality for the sake of love. He saw the eventual downfall of the gods, the world still clinging to old beliefs despite their absence. The worship of the Greek gods persisted, a testament to the deep-rooted traditions of humanity.
"That future did not bring the peace we hoped for," Callisto explained, her voice tinged with sadness. "The death of the gods did not change the hearts of mankind. Their worship continued, and violence reigned."
Eli's brow furrowed in confusion. "Then what must we do?"
"The key lies in Ares' love for Xena," Callisto said, her gaze piercing into Eli's. "True transformation cannot come through violence and destruction. The God of War's love for Xena is the catalyst. It is through this love that the One, the true God of Love, can reach the hearts of humanity."
Eli absorbed her words, understanding dawning upon him. "Ares must change," he murmured. "His heart must open to love for humanity to find peace."
Callisto nodded. "You must ensure that Ares' heart transforms. Guide him, show him the way. Love is the path, Eli, not war."
The angel's light began to fade, but her presence left an indelible mark on Eli's soul. He bowed his head in acknowledgment. "I will do as you ask. I will help Ares find his way."
With a final, radiant smile, Callisto vanished, leaving Eli alone with his thoughts and the immense responsibility that now lay before him. He rose, determination in his eyes, ready to embark on the mission entrusted to him.
The soft peace of the morning was abruptly shattered as the door to the chamber flew open. Gabrielle stormed in, her eyes blazing with fury as she took in the sight of Ares and Xena entwined in bed. "What do you think you're doing?" she shouted, her voice filled with anger and betrayal.
Xena, startled, sat up quickly, clutching the sheet to her chest. "Gabrielle, what's wrong?" she asked, confusion evident in her eyes.
Gabrielle pointed an accusing finger at Ares. "Him! What is he doing here with you? After everything he's done?"
Ares stood, his expression darkening. "Gabrielle, this isn't your business," he said, his tone low and dangerous.
Gabrielle advanced on him, her fists clenched. "You've manipulated her, hurt her, and now you think you can just... be with her? Like nothing happened?"
Before the situation could escalate further, Joxer rushed into the room, placing himself between Gabrielle and Ares. "Whoa, whoa! Let's all just calm down," he pleaded, his hands raised in a placating gesture.
Gabrielle turned her ire towards Joxer. "Calm down? How can you say that, Joxer? You know what he's done!"
Joxer nodded, his face serious. "I do, Gabrielle. But it's more complicated than that. Ares... he's changed."
Gabrielle scoffed, disbelief written all over her face. "Changed? Ares doesn't change."
Joxer glanced at Ares, then back at Gabrielle. He remembered the wedding, a moment that had revealed Ares' true feelings for Xena. Though it had been another attempt to win her back, it hadn't been about power or control. It had been about love. But he had promised not to tell Gabrielle about it.
"He... he cares for her," Joxer said carefully. "More than you realize."
Gabrielle's anger faltered for a moment, replaced by confusion. "What do you mean?"
Before Joxer could respond, Ares spoke, his voice softer, almost pained. "She's different now, Gabrielle. And so am I."
Gabrielle's eyes narrowed. "I don't believe you," she said, though her voice lacked the conviction from before.
Joxer placed a hand on her shoulder. "Gabrielle, please. Just trust me. We need to give this a chance."
Gabrielle looked between Joxer, Ares, and Xena, who was watching the exchange with wide, confused eyes. Finally, she took a step back, though her expression remained wary. "Fine. But I'm watching you, Ares," she warned.
Ares nodded, a mixture of relief and sadness in his eyes. Without another word, he stepped back, his form beginning to shimmer as he prepared to leave. He glanced at Xena one last time, his gaze filled with an emotion that left her breathless.
As he vanished, Xena felt a profound emptiness settle in her chest. She didn't fully understand what had just happened, but the void left by Ares' departure was undeniable. She looked at Gabrielle, seeking answers.
"Gabrielle, what... what did he mean?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Gabrielle sighed, moving to sit beside her. "It's a long story, Xena. But for now, just know that we're here for you. We'll figure this out together."
