A Toxic Turn of Events

I'm at it again, y'all! Writing for Pokemon! Ah, I've missed this! If that statement sounds strange, then you'll understand why by reading the end of the chapter.

For now, let's get straight into the story!

I DO NOT OWN POKEMON, OR ANY OF ITS CHARACTERS!

Enjoy~

It was a beautiful day in Unova, easily seen as the sun shone down over Ash, Iris, and Cilan. The trio had just made their way into a large clearing from the surrounding forest of Capacia Island, one of the Décolore Islands, in which they stopped to rest. They found that traversing the forest was a nice change of pace from their last few days aboard the cruise ship.

Checking his tablet device, Cilan pulled up a map and sought how much further their journey was to the island's opposite side. With one path to take and one day down, they were surely close to the end.

While the connoisseur was busy, Iris cheerfully spun Axew around in a sudden burst of excitement. She giggled and even danced a bit, which was enough to pull the attention of her traveling companions.

Cilan couldn't help but smile. "Well now, you seem to be in a good mood."

"Yeah," Ash said, moving back so Iris' hair wouldn't hit him. "I think that's just normal for Iris, though."

"Don't you see?" Iris allowed herself to fall back into a lush patch of mossy grass, then brought Axew in close for a hug. "Today is a wonderful day~!"

"Yew-Axew!" Her tiny dragon partner agreed.

"Yes, it most certainly is." Cilan glanced up towards the sky with a sigh. "Fresh air, a clear blue sky, and warm sun rays... All truly prime ingredients for a perfect day!"

"Hm,... I dunno." Ash looked up as well, unable to find anything special or apart from any other sunny day. "Today looks just like any other day to me."

"Pika-pika," Pikachu agreed with his trainer. He didn't understand what was so special about today either.

"Seriously Ash, you're such a little kid." Iris sat up with a huff, setting Axew in her lap. "Obviously, you wouldn't know a good day when you see one."

Ash simply shrugged off her comment. "I don't get it. You say that I'm a kid, but you're a kid, too."

"I am not!" She yelled, causing Axew to roll off once she stood upright.

"Oh, yeah? And, just why not?" Ash argued back, ignoring when Pikachu jumped from his shoulder to help Axew. "We're basically the same age!"

"Grr-I said I'm not-I'm not-I'm not!"

"Now now, you two," Cilan stepped in. "There's no need to fight. You wouldn't want to ruin such a lovely day with a sour atmosphere. Remember yesterday?" They had fought then, too. Had they learned nothing?

Iris sighed, "Yeah, I remember..."

"Me too," Ash huffed. "...She started it, though."

"Wha-I-!"

"Oh, I know!" Cilan cut in before Iris could retaliate. "Why don't we take a break and have lunch?"

"Aright!" Ash jumped up and pumped his fist in the air. "Food time!"

"Okay! Sounds good to me!" Iris smiled just as excited. She always loved Cilan's cooking. They all did. And, with the honey they bought from Honey Island, who knows what wonderful treats he'd come up with.

"Great," The connoisseur breathed a sigh of relief. "I'll get started then."

Ash, Iris, Pikachu, and Axew decided to play with their pokemon while Cilan prepped their meal. Just as they were walking off, Ash asked "How long do you think it'll take?"

Clian thought for a moment, "A fine day calls for a cuisine just as radiant, so I'd say about an hour."

"An hour!?" Ash visibly deflated. "Aw man, there's no way I can wait that long..."

"Well, we've always had to wait for the food, Ash." Iris said before turning to face one of the forest paths. "Hey, I know what we can do."

"Hm?" Ash straightened up.

"Let's go exploring while we wait!" She pointed excitedly towards a dirt path with plenty of trees and flowers. "That path over there looks nice."

"Yeah, alright! I bet we'll find some cool new pokemon, too. Right, Pikachu?"

"Pika," his partner chimed. Pikachu agreed that some exploring would be fun.

"Yup," Iris beamed. "And, maybe some nice berries, too!"

"Don't be long!" Cilan waved, calling out to them. "Remember, it'll only take an hour!"

"Okay!" They both said, waving goodbye as they left with Pikachu and Axew.

"Ah, sweet silence." Cilan sighed, relieved to finally have some peace and quiet, then knelt down to slip off his backpack. "Alright, time to get to work!"

Not too far away and just along the bank of a stream, a Purrloin lay resting in the shady branches of a tree. The cat pokemon stirred when a leaf came fluttering down and gently landed on his chest, then yawned and stretched his legs. Opening both eyes, he held it up to have a better look.

It was a wonderful leaf. The perfect shade of green with a dash purple on the stem and a large hole on one side. He took a look through it, moving it around until he caught sight of a shiny object in the water below. Ever curious, the Purrloin climbed down to have a closer look, realizing that the object seemed to rest in the center.

He then placed the leaf in the water, watching as it was swept away in the weak current before preparing to walk in. He was going to snatch up that shiny thing, but stopped short when he saw another pokemon on the opposite side. It was a Cinccino. No doubt she too was also there for that shimmering beauty just beneath the water's surface, whatever it was.

The two shared the same threatening glare before Purrloin dashed to grab the thing, making a run for it. He held it in his mouth, darting on all fours past a now angry Cinccino, who raced after him.

The Purrloin did everything in his power to dodge Cinccino's endless attacks of swift and tail whip, but didn't know how to lose her. She wanted that thing just as much as he did, if not more. And, it was clear Cinccino was determined to get it no matter what.

Back at camp, Cilan hummed a tune as he placed a silver dome over his freshly completed main course.

After having finished earlier than expected, he found that he had around half of his requested time left. So, deciding to utilize the few extra minutes, he opted to add something sweet to their meal and began flipping through one of his various cookbooks.

"A nice dessert should fully complete this assortment. Now then, let's see..."

Cinccino managed to take away Purrloin's shiny object moments ago, which was revealed to be nothing more than an ordinary bottle cap. Despite it all, Purrloin still chased after her in hopes of getting it back.

And, just the same, Cinccino continued attacking him, hoping to tire Purrloin out, but failed.

The sly cat figured he'd wait for the right moment to attack, as to not lose or damage the bottle cap, but continued to follow in hot pursuit.

Deciding on a pastry, Cilan ran his finger along that section of the book's index. "Oh, this one sounds nice... Haha, and what do you know? It looks like I have the right ingredients! The leftover berries I have will-"

Suddenly both pokemon burst from the bushes and Cinccino took the opportunity to throw some mid-air attacks, but Purrloin managed to dodge beforing continuing the chase.

"Huh?" Cilan flinched a little from the sudden noise, shielding himself from the gusts of dust and wind that came after. "Wh-What going on? Who's there?"

Cinccino jumped up to prepare another attack, charging what could only be a hyper beam. That left Purrloin an opportunity to strike, and he was going to make it count. He quickly readied Toxic and leaped above her, swinging as hard as he could at his opponent.

Purrloin managed to land a direct hit and a slight explosion rang out as who he assumed was Cinccino was spiked to the ground. When the purple fumes cleared, however, Purrloin noticed what he struck was not fur but a piece of clothing. Confused, he looked around and found Cinccino fleeing the scene. She had been too quick and dodged the attack.

Then, who had he just hit?

Purrloin's eyes slowly fell upon his victim in utter dismay. A young male with green hair lay underneath him. Shaking in fear of what he had done, Purrloin backed away.

That wasn't supposed to happen... This boy wasn't his target!

Purrloin immediately felt regretful, eyeing the glowing purple mark he'd left on the boy's chest. It looked bad. He tried in desperate attempts to wake the boy, but to no avail. That was also bad, very bad. What was he going to do?

Just then, he remembered there were pecha berries growing somewhere in the forest. He just needed to find one. Luckily, the part of the forest they were in had plenty of berry trees. Purrloin just had to pick the right ones. Opting to circle the clearing's edge first and not wanting to lose sight of the green-haired male, Purrlion searched every tree, but found nothing. Unfortunately, Purrloin would have to leave the kid in order to find the berries he needed.

He sighed and turned to go, hoping that his search wouldn't be long, then scurried off into the woods.

What if I told you I wrote this fic forever ago? And, that I just worked on it periodically over the course of 8+ years?

Insane, right? Well, it still isn't done... but, it is coming along far better than I ever could have hoped for when I first began writing it.

So, look forward to a good one, I guess. Oh, and don't forget to leave a review, follow, or favorite if you'd like to see more stories like this! I also have a poll up that asks about what fandom I should write more for, so check that out, too, please!

Oh, and don't worry. Cilan won't be alone for long.

See ya!
