Marvel: From the Void and Back Again
Chapter 25: Navigating the Tightrope
…
The next day dawned with a sense of unease hanging over Avengers Tower. The team was already on high alert after hearing about the Powers Act, but they knew they had to act carefully to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.
Peter-Knull was proactive. He knew that transparency was crucial if they were to navigate the legal minefield Zemo had laid out. Early that morning, he prepared a detailed report of his recent activities, meticulously documenting every action, encounter, and event. By the time he was done, the report filled an entire box…
…
Peter-Knull arrived at S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters, carrying the large box of paperwork. He walked into Nick Fury's office, setting the box down with a heavy thud. Fury looked up, eyebrow raised.
"What's this?" Fury asked, his tone a mix of curiosity and annoyance.
Peter-Knull shrugged. "If they don't want me to be a vigilante, fine. But they should read the paperwork as a result. Every action, every event, it's all documented."
Fury pulled out the first paper, scanning it quickly. His eyebrow rose higher as he flipped it over, finding the meticulous notes continued on the back. "This is... detailed."
Peter-Knull nodded. "I figured it was the best way to stay above board. Let them drown in the details."
Fury chuckled despite himself. "You've got a point. We'll keep this on file. It might just buy us some time."
…
Elsewhere…
Baron Zemo was in his lair, surrounded by his closest allies. The news of the Powers Act was spreading fast, and he was already preparing for the next phase.
"We've started strong," Zemo said, his voice filled with conviction. "But we must be on alert. The heroes will try to find loopholes, ways to work around our law. We must be ready to shut them down at every turn."
One of his allies, a shrewd-looking woman with sharp features, nodded. "What about Peter-Knull? He's known for being meticulous. He'll likely find a way to operate within the bounds of the law."
Zemo's eyes narrowed. "I'm counting on it. We'll use his own tactics against him. Ensure our legal teams are prepared to scrutinize every detail of his reports. One misstep, and we'll have him."
Just then, another contact approached with a nervous expression. "Sir, another box of reports came in... along with three others. Each one is as convoluted and detailed as the last. And they keep coming in."
Zemo's curiosity was piqued but quickly turned to annoyance. "Who else is sending these reports?"
The contact shuffled through his notes. "One's from Toon-Shade, another from Mystra, and another from Wild-Claw. More reports keep coming in from not just Peter-Knull, but also his symbiotes."
Zemo's headache began to throb. "How many symbiotes are doing the same thing?"
The contact hesitated, then replied, "All of them. That's about 200-280 symbiotes total, when you round up the ones that work with S.H.I.E.L.D."
Zemo's frustration was "It will take us months to go through all of these for a single day alone."
Zemo's allies exchanged worried glances, realizing the monumental task ahead. Yet, there was a glimmer of intrigue in Zemo's eyes. This unexpected development was both a challenge and an opportunity. If they could find even one error, one slip-up, they could exploit it.
"Continue the analysis," Zemo ordered. "We'll need to find a way to use this against them. They've thrown down the gauntlet, and we will rise to the challenge."
…
Two days later…
Two days later, Baron Zemo sat in his dimly lit office, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. He was surrounded by mountains of paperwork and multiple computer screens, all displaying reports from Peter-Knull and his symbiotes. The meticulous notes were too perfect, too detailed, infuriating Zemo to new heights.
His obsession had grown, bordering on madness. He had resorted to utilizing AI to sort through the endless data, cross-referencing it with police reports and other sources, but it was to no avail. Every time the AI flagged a potential discrepancy, it turned out to be nothing more than a false alarm.
"How is this possible?" Zemo muttered, slamming his fist onto the desk. "There must be a mistake, something we can exploit!"
His frustration was reaching new heights , the room thick with tension. One of his aides hesitantly approached, holding another stack of reports. "Sir, more reports just came in. This time from several other symbiotes as well. It's like a never-ending stream."
Zemo's eyes twitched with irritation as he snatched the reports from the aide. He scanned through them quickly, looking for any sign of an error. But the notes were flawless, each action meticulously recorded with precise times and details. It was infuriatingly perfect.
"Keep going," he ordered, his voice strained. "There has to be something we can use. No one is this perfect."
As his team continued to work tirelessly, Zemo's obsession deepened. The hours turned into days, and he became more and more consumed by his quest to find a mistake. The legal game he had started was turning into a nightmare of his own making.
…
Meanwhile, at Avengers Tower, the team was monitoring the situation closely. Peter-Knull had just finished another patrol and was discussing the developments with Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, and Peter Parker.
"Zemo's obsession with our reports is working in our favor," Iron Man said, glancing at the screens. "He's so focused on finding an error that he's neglecting other aspects of his plan."
Captain America nodded. "But we can't let our guard down. He's desperate, and that makes him dangerous."
Peter-Knull shrugged. "As long as we keep our reports detailed and accurate, there's nothing he can use against us. But we should be prepared for anything. He might try to escalate in other ways."
Spider-Woman added, "I've already set up surveillance on key locations. If Zemo makes a move, we'll know about it."
She-Hulk, who had been reading through some of the reports, looked up. "We should also be ready for any legal challenges he might throw our way. He's not just going to give up."
Peter Parker, playing a game of cards to keep his mind occupied, sighed. "This is going to be a long and difficult fight."
…
Back in Zemo's lair, his frustration was reaching a boiling point. The AI continued to churn through the data, but every result was the same: no errors. The meticulousness of the symbiotes' reports was driving him to the edge.
"Enough!" Zemo roared, sweeping the reports off his desk in a fit of rage. "There has to be a way to bring them down. I will not be defeated by paperwork!"
His allies exchanged nervous glances but remained silent. They knew better than to speak when Zemo was in this state. Instead, they quietly continued their work, hoping to find the elusive mistake that would give them the edge they needed.
Zemo took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. "We need to think outside the box. If we can't find a mistake, we'll have to create one. Prepare for the next phase of our plan. It's time to escalate."
Baron Zemo leaned back in his chair, his frustration momentarily giving way to a dark, cunning smile as he finally realized something sinister. An idea had wormed its way into his mind, one that could finally give him the edge he needed. He had heard rumors about Peter-Knull's past actions, and those rumors could be weaponized.
"He's killed before," Zemo murmured, his mind racing. "The incident with Krakoa, where he reportedly broke Xavier's neck after everything Xavier did, who's clone is now among the living. And the destruction of the X-Men in another universe after they killed his Madelyn Pryor. These are not mere accidents; they are crimes that can be brought to light."
He paced the room, his mind whirling with possibilities. "And then there's the recent wedding of Tombstone's daughter. Peter-Knull acted as a personal guard alongside that symbiote, Shell-Shock. He conspired with Kingpin's associates, dabbling in the criminal underworld. All of these actions can be used against him in a court of law."
Zemo's eyes gleamed with malevolent satisfaction. "We'll bring these crimes to light, exposing him for what he truly is. Not just a hero, but a vigilante operating above the law. We'll turn public opinion against him, forcing him into a legal battle he can't win."
He turned to his allies; his voice filled with determination. "Prepare the documents and evidence. We will bring these accusations forward and ensure that Peter-Knull faces justice in the courtroom. This is our path to victory."
His aides nodded, already setting to work on gathering the necessary evidence. Zemo's plan was set in motion, a plan that could potentially bring down one of the most powerful beings they had ever faced.
…
At a busy construction site, Peter-Knull was hard at work. An I-beam had nearly fallen on a worker's legs, but two pieces of concrete blocks had miraculously stopped it from crushing him. Peter-Knull quickly and carefully removed the I-beam, setting it aside gently while ensuring the worker was safe.
As he filled out paperwork documenting the time and circumstances of the incident, the police he was working with received a message that left them conflicted. One of the rookies, looking particularly uneasy, approached Peter-Knull.
"Mr. Knull," the rookie began, "you've received a court summons. Apparently, Mayor Zemo has arranged a court date to clarify some things."
Peter-Knull absorbed the detail and shrugged. "Guess I'll have to go to court then." He finished writing a note on the paperwork and handed it over. "Alright... should I go with you? If you want, you guys can take me in. I don't mind. Though, bear in mind, I don't really have fingerprints. I'm all symbiote, after all."
The rookie exchanged glances with his colleagues, clearly unsure how to proceed. The seasoned officer in charge stepped forward, nodding. "We'll escort you to ensure everything goes smoothly."
Peter-Knull gave a nod of understanding, his calm demeanor putting the officers at ease. They began the process of transporting him though it was apparent that he would give them no issue.
…
Captain America was in the middle of a meeting at Avengers Tower when the news reached him. A SHIELD agent entered the room and handed him a report, his expression serious.
Steve Rogers opened the report, his eyes scanning the document quickly. He felt a wave of shock and concern wash over him. The contents of the report were clear: Mayor Zemo had issued a court summons for Peter-Knull, accusing him of various crimes and conspiracy with the criminal underworld. It was a brazen abuse of the law, but Zemo's position as mayor complicated matters.
Captain America stood there, conflicted. On one hand, he understood the importance of the rule of law and the need to follow due process. On the other hand, he knew Zemo's true nature and the lengths he would go to undermine the Avengers and their allies.
"Steve?" Natasha's voice brought him back to the present. "What's going on?"
Steve handed the report to Natasha and looked around the room at his teammates. "Zemo's playing dirty. He's summoned Peter-Knull to court, using legal means to attack us."
Iron Man frowned, leaning back in his chair. "This is ridiculous. Zemo's abusing his power to target us. But he's the mayor now, so we have to tread carefully."
"He's using the law as a weapon," Captain Marvel added, her tone frustrated. "We need to gather evidence and expose his corruption, but we have to be smart about it."
As the team discussed their next steps, Steve couldn't shake the feeling of impending conflict. They had faced many threats before, but this legal battle would be different. They would have to fight within the confines of the law, and Zemo was a master at manipulating it.
Meanwhile, at the courthouse, She-Hulk heard a commotion outside her office. Stepping outside, she noticed Peter-Knull going through the process of having his picture taken. Due to his symbiotic nature, taking off his biker gloves for fingerprints was pointless. Despite the situation, Peter-Knull remained unnervingly calm.
She-Hulk's eyes widened in shock. "What's going on? Why is he being treated like this?" she demanded, her voice filled with concern.
One of the officers looked up, slightly uneasy. "Court summons from Mayor Zemo. We're just following protocol, ma'am."
Peter-Knull took it in stride, his calm demeanor unsettling. "It's fine, She-Hulk. I'll handle this," he said, his voice steady.
She-Hulk's expression hardened, a mix of disbelief and anger flashing across her face. "This is ridiculous. Zemo's really pushing it this time."
Peter-Knull responded to Jennifer's comment with a calm demeanor, "It's not like this hasn't happened to me before. If you think this is bad, you should have seen that one universe I visited where Ultron assimilated most of the life on the planet—specifically the government and lawyers. Now that was a legal battle."
He chuckled softly at the memory, his casual tone making the situation seem almost mundane. Jennifer and the staff exchanged bewildered glances, struggling to process what they had just heard.
With that, Peter-Knull followed the officers to the waiting area to continue the process, maintaining his unnervingly calm demeanor. The officers escorted him with a mix of apprehension and curiosity, unsure of what to make of the enigmatic symbiote. Peter-Knull's presence commanded attention, and even in this bureaucratic setting, he remained composed and cooperative.
Jennifer watched as Peter-Knull disappeared down the hallway, her mind racing with thoughts of the impending legal battle. She knew that Zemo was playing a dangerous game, and that Peter-Knull's calm exterior masked a powerful and unpredictable force.
Something was telling her that they were in for quite a ride…
…
Out in the Canadian wilderness, Logan, Laura, Daken, Gabriella, and Wild-Claw were deep into a S.H.I.E.L.D. mission, clearing out an old Hydra facility. The place seemed abandoned, the remnants of Hydra's influence dwindling since Red Skull's fall. As they navigated the desolate halls, Wild-Claw suddenly tensed, sensing something distant and off.
"Peter-Knull's in a tight spot," he said, his connection to the symbiote leader alerting him to the situation.
Moments later, Nick Fury's voice crackled over their comms, confirming Wild-Claw's feeling. "Team, Peter-Knull has a court date. Zemo's pulling some legal strings."
Logan grunted, his instincts sharpening. "Damn, what's the play?"
Wild-Claw after a moment of thought twitched his cat-like/wolf-like ears and shrugged. "Peter-Knull's advice is to let Zemo push. We'll be honest in court, tell the truth and nothing but the truth. Zemo's only making his legal situation as mayor worse. Honesty is our best weapon."
Laura nodded, seeing the logic in that. "We stick to the truth, then. Let's finish up here and head back."
…
Madelyn Pryor sat in her office at the Limbo embassy, her mind racing with the news she had just received from Nick Fury. Peter-Knull was being summoned to court by Mayor Zemo, and she knew she had to be there to support him. Her decision was immediate and unwavering. She swiftly began making arrangements to attend the trial, her thoughts consumed with concern for her love.
As she exited her office, she was startled to find Mephisto waiting for her, his presence as unsettling as ever. His eyes gleamed with a mixture of curiosity and mischief.
"I've heard about the situation," Mephisto began, his voice smooth and calculating. "I'm willing to pull some strings to help."
Madelyn's eyes narrowed with suspicion. "And what do you want in return?" she asked, her tone cold and direct.
Mephisto's smile widened, a predatory glint in his eyes. "It's simple. I want a portion of your hellish domain. Think of it as taking the load off your burden."
Madelyn's hand instinctively moved to her stomach, feeling the twins' kicks. She sensed their distress and it only strengthened her resolve. "I won't play these games with you, Mephisto," she said firmly. "I trust Peter-Knull to handle this without your help. May I please leave now?"
Mephisto's expression flickered with irritation, but he masked it quickly. "Very well," he said, his voice dripping with false graciousness. "But remember, the offer stands."
Madelyn turned away, her resolve unwavering. She would stand by Peter-Knull through this trial, confident in his ability to navigate the legal battle without falling into Mephisto's trap.
And on a more personal note, she refused to play these games with him, no matter how enticing the offer seemed…
…
In the courthouse, She-Hulk, also known as Jennifer Walters, was meticulously going through the mountain of paperwork with Peter-Knull. Despite the overwhelming volume of reports and notes, Peter-Knull remained composed, casually reviewing the details of each document. Jennifer marveled at his meticulous record-keeping, noting that he and his symbiotes had documented every activity in such detail that it barely left room for accusations of vigilantism.
Testing his memory, Jennifer picked up a particularly dense page that seemed to have 5,000 words on each side. "Peter," she began, "can you tell me about Section-2 on paragraph 12, far left column on the front?"
Without hesitation, Peter-Knull responded, "That would be the incident on the 12th of this month. It was around 3:47 PM. I was patrolling near 5th Avenue when I spotted a purse snatcher. The suspect was approximately 5'8", 170 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. He managed to run about 12 feet before I intervened. The purse belonged to Mrs. Gladys Thompson, age 67, who was visiting from Ohio."
Jennifer stared, stunned by the level of detail he could recall so effortlessly. The precision in his recollection was both impressive and slightly unnerving. She glanced at the box from which she had pulled the document. It contained about 600 pages, and there were two more boxes just like it. The thought of going through all of them before the trial started tomorrow gave her an instant headache.
"You remember all of this?" Jennifer asked, almost incredulously.
Peter-Knull shrugged nonchalantly. "It's necessary. If we're going to play by their rules, we might as well do it thoroughly."
Jennifer couldn't help but gulp as she looked at the daunting task ahead. This trial was going to be anything but ordinary, and she realized the complexity and meticulousness required to defend Peter-Knull against Zemo's accusations.
Jennifer took a deep breath, considering the complexity of their situation. She decided to test Peter-Knull's knowledge further. "Peter, can you explain the application of the Vigilantism Prevention Act of 2020, specifically Section 4, Subsection 7, in a courtroom setting?"
Peter-Knull didn't miss a beat. "Certainly. Section 4, Subsection 7 of the Vigilantism Prevention Act of 2020 stipulates that any individual engaging in unauthorized law enforcement activities is subject to legal repercussions. However, the subsection also details exceptions, particularly for those who provide thorough documentation of their activities to appropriate legal authorities within 24 hours of the incident. This is to ensure transparency and accountability. The application of this law in court would involve presenting detailed records to demonstrate compliance with these exceptions. For example, in a recent case involving the apprehension of a thief on the 15th of the month before the last question you asked me, I documented the time, location, and actions taken, submitting the report to local authorities within the specified timeframe, thus adhering to the legal requirements and avoiding charges of vigilantism."
Jennifer blinked, trying to process the flood of information. His response was not only thorough but also demonstrated an intricate understanding of the law's nuances. She was both impressed and slightly overwhelmed by his capacity for detail.
"Wow," she finally said, shaking her head. "You're thorough, if nothing else."
Peter-Knull simply shrugged again. "It's necessary. We need to be prepared for everything."
Jennifer looked back at the mountain of paperwork and for once, felt out of depth… like she's back in school again.
…
The very next morning, the courthouse was bustling with activity. Everyone important to the case had arrived: Zemo's lawyers, Kingpin showing his support for Peter-Knull, J. Jonah Jameson setting up cameras for the Daily Bugle with new equipment funded by a previous Peter-Knull interview, and many more notable figures. Madelyn Pryor was present, holding her stomach protectively, occasionally rubbing it as if to reassure their unborn children that daddy was going to be okay. Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, was there to serve as one of Peter-Knull's lawyers.
The legal arguments commenced, with multiple witnesses brought to the stand on both sides. Zemo's lawyers refrained from using their trump cards immediately. The judge, visibly tired from going through stacks of Peter-Knull's meticulously kept notes and cross-referencing simplified versions with witness accounts, listened intently as each side presented their case.
Jennifer Walters, also known as She-Hulk, brought up the Vigilante Act that she had discussed with Peter-Knull the previous day. She argued that according to the facts, Peter-Knull had been voluntarily giving reports on his activities, albeit in meticulous detail.
The courtroom was tense when Zemo's lawyers took their turn. They questioned Peter-Knull on the stand about the past Xavier, not the clone currently serving time for his crimes. One of the lawyers asked, "Is it true that you broke his neck? Took justice into your own hands?"
Peter-Knull, composed and unwavering, responded, "Yes, I won't deny it. Many other mutants saw it on Krakoa at that time. However, I will give context as to why I decided on that action if the judge will allow it."
The judge nodded, signaling him to continue.
Peter-Knull took a deep breath before explaining, "It's a well-known fact that Xavier admitted himself that he was going to reset the timeline in a deal with Sinister, by sending his current mind back to his younger self. Imagine the things he would have changed, all to continue the lie that he was deluding himself with. And let's not forget how he didn't hesitate as he admitted it for all to see. Something that many here who were present can remind us all of."
The courtroom murmured as Peter-Knull's words hung in the air, his detailed explanation providing a stark contrast to the simple accusation. The judge, taking in the explanation, seemed to ponder the implications as the session continued.
As the trial continued, things were slowly but surely going in Peter-Knull's favor. His meticulous documentation and level-headed explanations were swaying the court. He provided context for each of his actions, making it clear that his decisions were based on the unique and often dire circumstances he faced.
Zemo's lawyers, sensing the shift, decided to employ a trick question. One of them stepped forward and asked, "There are rumors surrounding the alternate Logan who's currently serving time. According to these reports, you wiped out that world's X-Men in retaliation for murdering your previous Madelyn Pryor. Some of the details were quite graphic according to the rumors. Could you provide context for the court?"
Peter-Knull composed himself before answering. "Yes, I can provide context. In that world, I gave the X-Men a total of three chances to come clean about blowing up the building my previous Madelyn Pryor was in. Each time, they denied involvement. The final time I demanded the truth, they openly attacked me. It was clear that they were not innocent in this matter. However, I must stress that different events happened in that world that didn't happen here. The orchestrator of that chaos was Sinister in the end. He was the one pulling the strings."
The courtroom was silent as Peter-Knull's words sank in. His explanation was detailed and measured, providing a clear picture of the dire circumstances he had faced. The judge, taking in the information, seemed to consider the weight of Peter-Knull's actions in light of the broader context.
Jennifer Walters, sensing an opportunity, stood up. "Your Honor, it's important to note that Peter-Knull's actions, while extreme, were taken in a world under the influence of a powerful and malevolent force. His actions were in response to extraordinary circumstances, and he has always strived to protect the innocent."
The judge nodded, seeming to appreciate the context provided. As the trial continued, the honesty and transparency of Peter-Knull's testimony were beginning to turn the tide in his favor. The detailed records, witness testimonies, and Peter-Knull's composed demeanor were making it increasingly clear that he was not the villain Zemo's lawyers were trying to paint him as.
As the session progressed, more witnesses were called, and further evidence was presented. Each piece of the puzzle seemed to support Peter-Knull's case, highlighting his efforts to operate within the law and protect those who could not protect themselves.
The judge listened intently, weighing the arguments and evidence presented. After a long pause, he finally spoke, his voice firm and authoritative. "I've heard enough. Legally, no actual laws have been broken by Peter-Knull. His meticulous records and compliance with the law are evident."
He glanced at Zemo's lawyers. "As for actions in the other universe, from what I've heard, that world's Sinister brought down the world and most of that universe. Peter-Knull and others ensured justice was served there. Any grievances within that world fall under its jurisdiction, not ours."
The judge continued, "We cannot argue with the fact that the problems that existed there do not exist here. Therefore, Peter-Knull is found innocent of all charges. These charges should not have been brought to court in the first place."
The courtroom buzzed with murmurs as the judge's decision sank in. Peter-Knull maintained his composed demeanor, nodding slightly in acknowledgment. Jennifer Walters and Matt Murdock shared a relieved glance, their hard work and dedication paying off.
Zemo's face tightened with barely concealed frustration. His carefully orchestrated plan had been dismantled by the truth and the meticulous records kept by Peter-Knull and his symbiotes.
Peter-Knull stood, addressing the judge. "Thank you, Your Honor. I will continue to operate within the bounds of the law and protect those who cannot protect themselves."
The judge nodded, satisfied with the outcome. "Court is adjourned."
As the courtroom emptied, Peter-Knull's allies gathered around him, their support evident. Madelyn Pryor approached, her hand resting protectively on her stomach, and whispered, "I knew you'd be okay."
Peter-Knull smiled softly, "We just need to keep doing what we do best, being honest."
Outside the courthouse, the media swarmed, eager for statements. J. Jonah Jameson, with his cameras ready, captured every moment, ensuring the public would hear the full story.
As they left the courthouse, Peter-Knull glanced back at Zemo, who stood watching them with a steely gaze but he paid it no heed at the end of the day, they had said nothing but the truth.
As Peter-Knull left the courthouse, reporters swarmed him, eager for statements. The first reporter asked, "How do you feel about being found innocent?"
Peter-Knull responded casually, "It's just a matter of the truth coming out."
The second reporter inquired, "What are your thoughts on Zemo's accusations?"
Peter-Knull shrugged, "He had his concerns. We addressed them."
Finally, a third reporter pressed, "Do you hold any ill will towards Mayor Zemo?"
Peter-Knull smiled slightly. "No issue. The mayor had concerns, and I addressed them. Simple as that."
With that, he calmly walked into the SHIELD vehicle, leaving the reporters satisfied with his straightforward answers.
…
Baron Zemo's frustration was reaching new heights, as he watched Peter-Knull leave the courthouse unscathed. He gritted his teeth and faced the reporters, one of whom boldly asked, "Mr. Mayor, how do you respond to the court's decision?"
Zemo's composure snapped. "This is an outrage! The system is flawed!" he barked, his voice dripping with frustration and anger. The cameras captured every word, every furious expression. His tirade continued, "How can they allow such a dangerous being to walk free? It's a travesty of justice!"
It took him a moment to realize the gravity of his outburst. Every camera was on him, recording his unhinged reaction. The reporters' faces were a mix of shock and intrigue, sensing a story far juicier than the trial itself. Realizing the potential damage to his reputation, he quickly attempted to compose himself.
But the damage was done. The reporters pounced, their questions growing more pointed. "Mr. Mayor, do you believe your handling of this case will impact your standing?" one asked. Another chimed in, "Do you regret bringing these charges against Peter-Knull?"
Zemo's eyes darted around, the weight of the scrutiny pressing down on him. He muttered, "No further comments," and hurriedly excused himself, retreating to his vehicle.
Inside the vehicle, Zemo's mind raced. He knew he had jeopardized his position as mayor. His carefully constructed façade was crumbling, and the consequences of his actions were beginning to close in on him. The legal maneuvering he had prided himself on had backfired spectacularly. His allies' expressions from earlier that day haunted him—doubt, concern, and the beginnings of mistrust.
As the vehicle drove away, Zemo's thoughts spiraled. He had underestimated Peter-Knull, and now his own credibility was at stake, not just from Peter-Knull, but from the political arena he had thought he mastered. The once-solid ground beneath him was slowly cracking apart, and for the first time in a long while, Baron Zemo felt the sting of impending defeat.
…
A while later, at the Mayor's office…
Baron Zemo stormed back to his office, his mind a whirlwind of frustration and fury. He had barely stepped through the door when he noticed the presence of several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, their stern expressions signaling trouble. At the center of the room stood Nick Fury, his one eye fixed on Zemo with a mixture of disappointment and anger.
"What's the meaning of this?" Zemo demanded, trying to maintain his composure despite the rising panic gnawing at him.
Fury didn't flinch. "We're conducting an investigation, Baron. After your recent court debacle, we received authorization from the higher-ups to search your premises."
Zemo opened his mouth to retort, but the words caught in his throat as he saw two agents uncovering a stash of Peter-Knull's reports. His reports. The ones he had meticulously hidden from the court.
Fury's eye widened in shock before narrowing into a piercing glare. "Did you... withhold evidence?"
Zemo's pulse quickened and sweat beaded on his forehead. He took a step back, contemplating his next move. But before he could act, a wave of panic overtook him. He turned on his heel and made a break for the door.
"Wow... just, wow," Fury muttered, shaking his head as he watched Zemo attempt to flee. It took only seconds for the agents to react, tackling Zemo to the ground and restraining him.
"Get him out of here," Fury ordered, his voice cold and unyielding. "We're going to get to the bottom of this."
…
As Zemo was dragged away, he realized the full extent of his downfall. The very game he had tried to play had now ensnared him, and there was no escape from the consequences of his actions.
At Avengers Tower, Logan, Jocasta, Captain Marvel, Jennifer, and Tigra were gathered. Jocasta was savoring a symbiotic candy provided by Candivore to satisfy her cravings, while the others were engaged in a relaxed game of cards. The atmosphere was calm, a rare respite from their usual chaos.
Suddenly, their communication devices beeped simultaneously, signaling an incoming message from Nick Fury. They exchanged curious glances and paused their activities to listen.
Nick Fury's voice came through, "Listen up, team. We've got some significant news. Zemo has lost his position as mayor. He's currently in custody for withholding and attempting to alter evidence. This stems directly from the fallout of Peter-Knull's trial. Turns out, Zemo tried to manipulate the documents and reports to frame Peter-Knull. The same judge from Peter-Knull's trial is overseeing Zemo's case now."
The team absorbed the news in stunned silence. Logan was the first to react, a smirk forming on his face. "Looks like Zemo bit off more than he could chew."
Jennifer shook her head, still processing. "Unbelievable. How desperate was he to go to such lengths?"
Jocasta, still nibbling on her candy, added, "It seems Zemo underestimated just how meticulous Peter-Knull and his symbiotes are."
Captain Marvel leaned back, a relieved expression on her face. "At least that's one less threat we have to worry about for now."
Tigra, who had been unusually quiet, finally spoke up. "But it makes you wonder, how many more are out there, plotting and scheming? We can never let our guard down."
Logan nodded. "True. But for now, we focus on the present. We'll handle whatever comes next."
Jocasta, looking thoughtful, said, "It's ironic, really. Zemo's obsession with bringing down Peter-Knull only led to his own downfall."
As they settled back into their routines, Logan couldn't help but chuckle softly. "Zemo thought he was playing a masterstroke, but he didn't count on the fact that we've got our own aces up our sleeves."
…
Meanwhile, in an isolated location out in the cosmos, Hope Summers seethed with anger. Her focus had been on Peter-Knull's every move, and each victory he achieved only fueled her rage further. The trauma from the Krakoa incident, when everything fell apart, still haunted her. As her frustration grew, she found herself snapping at the Phoenix Force, her intended benefactor and partner.
"You think he's invincible?!" she shouted at the fiery entity, her voice trembling with anger. "Why are you holding me back? We should take him right now!"
The Phoenix Force, majestic and unyielding, stared at her impassively. "I chose you because you have the potential to be my avatar. But if you cannot control yourself, I will find another."
Before things could escalate further, Mephisto, who had been observing with amusement, interjected. "Ah, Hope. You never questioned the morality of resurrecting the dead by cloning their bodies every time, did you?" His voice was laced with mockery. "Back when you still had 'resurrection'," he emphasized the word gleefully, as if it were a punchline to a cruel joke. "You never stopped to think and ask if you were truly bringing anyone back. And now, you've learned the truth your throwing a pity party, aren't you? It's utterly immature and shows you lack any and all responsibility."
His mocking laughter echoed in the desolate place, and Hope's fury reached a boiling point. She lunged at Mephisto in a blind rage, her powers flaring. But before she could reach him, the Living Tribunal appeared, his presence radiating authority and power.
"Hope Summers," the Living Tribunal's voice was like thunder, commanding and final. "You will abide by the laws of this realm, as per our agreement."
Hope froze in mid-air, her rage dissipating into frustration and helplessness. She knew better than to challenge the Living Tribunal. As she landed back on the ground, she cast a final, seething glare at Mephisto, who simply smiled in return.
The Phoenix Force floated beside her, its presence a reminder of the power she had yet to fully harness. "Control your anger, Hope. Only then will you be able to defeat your enemies."
Hope clenched her fists, her resolve hardening. "I will. And Peter-Knull will pay for what he's done...I swear it!"
Mephisto, still amused, watched as Hope struggled with her inner turmoil, "How far are you willing to go Hope Summers?" he wondered with genuine interest as he watched Hope Summers go back to skulking with a drink in hand.
