The episode opens on Kouta's music box, still playing the tune of Lilium. Lucy stares on, looking somewhat cross while Kouta can only stare. They stare for awhile until Kouta finally speaks.
Kouta: You like it?
Lucy: What?
Kouta: Why else would you be staring?
Kouta closes the box, stopping the music.
Lucy: I thought... I just thought it was a pretty song, thats all.
' It does have a nice melody.' Mayu mentally agrees.
Kouta: Really?
Kouta then takes notice of Lucy's horns.
Kouta: Oh, are those growing out of your head? They look like horns.
"Pretty insensitive way to say that." Yuka says.
"I guess so." Kouta agrees. Especially given what had happened last episode.
Lucy covers her horns.
Lucy: I'm sure you think my horns are disgusting don't you.
Kouta: What?
Lucy (Thoughts): I'm sick of this, I'm sick of it all.
Lucy's vectors begin to creep out.
Kouta: Thats cool!
Kouta blood runs cold at the thought of being so close to death as a kid.
Kouta runs over and grabs Lucy by the shoulders.
Kouta: Thats so cool! No way, those are totally awesome!
Lucy looks like she doesn't know what to make of this behaviour. Her vectors receed.
Kouta: I'm really jealous.
Lucy slightly blushes but collects herself and bats his hands away.
' Was she blushing for a bit?' Yuka wonders if she just imagined it.
Lucy: You're jealous? You have no idea how much trouble these horns have caused me.
Kouta: I'm not sure what you mean but, I don't think I've seen anything that cool! I'm not kidding I think they're great!
Lucy turns away.
Lucy: Leave me alone. You're not funny.
Kouta: What do you think? Do you want to be friends? I'm staying with my relatives for the summer, I won't be here for long, but while I'm still in town we should hang out and play together how about it?
Lucy thinks back to the last person she befriended.
Girl (flashback): If you ever have a problem, you can tell me anything. Whatever you need, I'm there for you.
Kouta couldn't help but keep thinking what would have been had he befriended Lucy earlier. 'I was just a day off from her traumatic experience. I might have been able to stop her from killing all together.'
Lucy: You must be joking.
Kouta: What? Why's that?
Lucy: Its because I hate all of you.
Lucy tries walking away. Kouta can only look confused.
Kouta: You hate all of us? Hold on! My name is Kouta! Same time tomorrow I'll be waiting for you right here! Don't forget to come, I'll be here! I promise!
"Kouta, you really are persistent." Mayu tells him. "Her being prickly and you trying to befriend her regardless."
"Either way, I'm thankful that he is." Lucy says.
Cut to a news report on a TV.
Reporter: Theres still no leads in the case of the murdered children found at dawn today at an area children's home. Amidst growing concern neighbours in the area, a search for the missing girl continues. [This might not be exactly how she says it, but this was the best I could hear it]
As the report goes on the camera shows that this is in an unfamiliar home. Eventually, we see a small body taking a shower. She steps out of the shower and turns of the TV. Lucy is holding the remote and has a towel on her head, wearing nothing else. She puts the remote down and heads towards the fridge. When she opens it, it lets light into the dark room, revealing the now dead residents of the home.
Yuka's heart stopped. It WAS Lucy that caused the murders that had been going around during that time. She was drunk with clarity that she wordlessly kept on watching, wanting to know more of the truth that was left out from her.
Lucy looked away again. While she remembered killing to use people's homes for whatever she needed at the moment, the detains were really hazy regarding those moments. Why couldn't she have known about the voice sooner? Maybe she could have resisted it and won. No matter, what was done was done, and all that there was now was regret for killing people she thought didn't deserve it.
It then cuts to show a storm outside. Lucy stands on the same hill she and Kouta met.
Kouta (Flashback): Same time tomorrow, I'll be waiting for you right here.
Lucy looks around and hears something that just turns out to be a squirrel.
Lucy: You promised. You said you would be here for me, but you're not.
She then notices two police officers coming in her direction.
Officer 1: So this time, the whole family was murdered?
Lucy hides behind a tree.
Officer 2: Yeah, the same MO as the children centre. This guy's really bloodthirsty, he's got the whole department in a panic.
Officer 1: Doesn't leave much time to search for a missing girl.
Officer 2: Yeah...
Officer 1: Huh?
Officer 2: Whats wrong.
Lucy readies a vector.
Everyone tenses, expecting to see more carnage.
Officer 1: The rains getting heavy.
Officer 2: You wanna head back?
Officer 1: Yeah.
The two officers walk off the hill.
Everyone, Lucy included, breaths a sigh of relief.
The rain picks up as Lucy is left sitting by the tree. She remembers Kouta.
Lucy (thoughts): I know. Theres no way he's coming? But where am I supposed to go?
Lucy is surprised when someone quickly puts a hat on her head.
Kouta: Here you go. If those horns are giving you trouble, maybe you should hide them.
Quickly overcoming the shock of him being there, Lucy sees his knees.
Lucy: Did you hurt your knee?
Kouta: Oh. I banged it when I was sneaking out of the house.
Lucy: You had to sneak out?
Kouta: I hit it when I tried to jump into a tree from the second floor. Dad didn't want me to go outside, he said there's a crazy person on the loose, killing people around here.
Lucy nervously looks away.
Yuka remembered when Kouta has come back in the middle of the night that day, and getting the ass chewing of a life time from his father. 'He warned that Kouta could have bumped into the killer. Little did he know... did we all know... he was spending time with the killer...'
Meanwhile, Mayu and Nana winced at Kouta unintentionally calling Lucy crazy straight to her face.
'If someone had said that to the old Lucy, she probably would have ripped their head off.' Nana thought. ' She's not like the Lucy I first met... yet.' She steeled herself for Lucy's further downfall that was inevitable to come.
Fade to the two sitting together in a small cave.
Kouta: The rain... it's really coming down. Hey, what were you doing out here yesterday?
Lucy: Nothing, really.
Kouta: Oh.
"I guess you know what I was really doing that day." Lucy says.
"Mourning your friend. Yeah." Kouta says. "I wonder if the marker you put up is still there after all this time?"
"Maybe, it wouldn't hurt to look?" Lucy suggests, somewhat excited about going back to the place where she and Kouta had first met with him.
Lucy: What about you? Why did you want to, um...
Kouta: What?
Lucy: Make friends... with someone like me?
Kouta brought out his sketch book.
Kouta: Okay.
He opens it, then hands it to Lucy. The screen shows a detailed pencil drawing in colour.
"Woah!" Nana looks at the screen. Stare in her eyes.
"So so detailed, and in pencil crayon to boot." Mayu adds. "How come we've never seen you drawing something like that?"
"Oh, It's a hobby I kind of dropped that Summer due to... circumstances." Kouta explains with a sheepish smile and hand scratching the back of his head. "Though I am somewhat interested to get back into it, now."He wondered if he could
Kouta: I like drawing. I came to the mountain to sketch yesterday, it usually empty up here, but there you were. You looked so, lonely somehow.
Lucy: I don't need your sympathy.
Kouta: And there was this.
Kouta takes out the music box and opens it, allowing it to play its tune of Lilium.
Kouta: I've always loved this song. I was happy you liked it too.
Lucy blushes slightly. The two sit together, listening to the music as the rain keeps pouring down.
Kouta: Its cold, isn't it.
Lucy: Yeah.
Kouta scoots closer to Lucy.
Lucy: What are you doing?
Kouta: Its a good way to stay warm. You don't want to catch a cold.
Yuka can't help but fume on the inside. What took her lots of proding and sacrifice to even get a romantic moment with Kouta, he was willing to give to Lucy by her simply feeling lonely and having similar tastes in music.
'Maybe I should try that to get him closer.' She thought. ' It's not that I hate Lilium either, it's just really sad is all.'
Lucy blushes slightly and looks away. Eventually, she closes her eyes.
Lucy: Thanks for the hat.
In a way, the hat reminded Nana of her dress. Both a gift from someone they loved and treasured with each passing moment. She still had her dress which she kept safe, but Lucy must have lost her hat when she was captured. Looking over to Lucy, still rather close with Kouta, she supposed it didn't matter so long as Kouta was with her.
Fade to later, during the night.
Kouta: Do you wanna play again sometime?
Lucy: Oh, yeah.
Kouta: Well, great!
Kouta waves and quickly heads off. The sound of a pair of bicycles approaching follows. Lucy looks behind herself to see two police officers.
Officer 3: Hey kid. It's too late to be out playing, didn't your teacher tell you there's a curfew?
Officer 4: It's dangerous. Go straight home.
Lucy nods and runs away from the two. After running a short distance, she stops in front of a house where she hears laughter.
Child 1: You're so stupid.
Child 2: You're stupid!
Child 1: Shut up! Mom!
Lucy begins to look progressively angry as this progresses.
All thoughts come out about he same in this moment. ' Is she really going todo it?'
Lucy paled slightly, wishing even she never saw it. Out of all the people who's house she could have raided, it had to be someone who had kids. Although, she felt no guilt for killing those in the orphanage, the thought of her killing children who had done nothing wrong made her want to hurl. 'Why did I ever listen to that voice? Why couldn't I just have slept on the street like I had been doing not to long after?'
"Why couldn't I just have never killed in the first place." She quietly mutters to herself. Kouta is the only one who can hear here. He braces himself, knowing what was coming.
Cut to when the father of the house gets back.
Father: I'm home!
No answer.
Father: Where is everybody?
Lucy approaches from within the dark.
Father: Honey? Mamiko? What are you doing with all the lights off-
The mans head comes straight from his shoulders, splattering blood. The camera angle changes to show a woman that seems to have had something small driven through her skull.
Lucy: I guess this place will do for awhile.
Yuka seriously considered somehow getting a hold of the institute and getting them to come pick up Lucy. How she hadn't killed THEM yet was still beyond Yuka. ' It's because of Kouta.' She thought. ' If he were gone, she would have no problem ripping us apart.'
Cut to Lucy waiting up on the hill.
Lucy: It's been three days. I wonder if he isn't coming back.
"You cameback there every three days?" Mayu questions. "That's dedication."
"Sorry to have kept you waiting." Kouta sheepishly says. "I was visiting alot more extended family that lived here at the time and going out having fun with them. I never forgot you during those times and figured you might had found someone else to hang around when I was gone."
"No, it's fine. Don't apologize." Lucy insists.
She then notices Kouta walking up the path and smiles.
Kouta: Have you been waiting for me?!
Lucy flushes, clearly embarrassed.
Lucy: I wasn't really waiting.
Mayu and Nana quietly giggle over Lucy's obvious lie.
She turns her back to Kouta.
Kouta: I was hopping I would run into you here. I didn't want to leave without saying goodbye.
Lucy grips her skirt.
Lucy: ... I see...
Kouta: I thought it would be nice, if you and I hang out together all day.
Lucy: Hang out together?
Cut to the two sitting at the back of an empty bus.
Kouta: Are you serious! You've never been to the zoo?
Lucy: Is it fun looking at the stupid animals?
"It was fun, by the way." Lucy whispers. "It remains the best day of my life."
"Then, we'll just have to change that." Kouta promises her.
Kouta: Yeah its fun, really! These animals you can't see anywhere else. My favourite part is looking at all the really strange ones.
Lucy remembers Tomoe.
Tomoe (flashback): You're totally not a human.
Kouta winces at his poor choice of words and where it led Lucy's mind to.
Lucy: I'm not interested. It's stupid animals.
The bus continues on its way before cutting to an overjoyed Lucy.
Lucy: Wow! What is that thing!
Cut to show Kouta watching Lucy admire the elephant.
Lucy: He's so big! He's huge! How did he even get this big? Wow!
Yuka, Mayu, and Nana were somewhat shocked to see the normally reserved Lucy acting energetic and excited.
Lucy calms down a bit and looks to Kouta who simply smiles back.
Cut to Lucy and Kouta walking through the zoo.
Lucy: It's not like I'm having fun. He just surprised me, thats all. And- Woah!
"It's almost like she's a tsundere." Mayu mutters to herself.
"It's kinda funny how unconvincing she is." Nana laughs. Even Lucy starts smiling. Watching the best day of her life unfold again.
Lucy spots a Giraffe.
Lucy: Look at that neck!
She speeds over to the giraffe enclosure.
Lucy: How'd he get such a long neck?! Hey, I can't believe it! This is amazing! Really amazing!
Kouta: I've never seen someone get so excited over giraffes and elephants...
"I've, um, never seen them before?" Lucy sheepishly offers. "Also, I always did have a soft spot for animals."
Cut to Lucy sitting on a bench where Kouta hands her a cup of shaved ice.
Kouta: Here, my dad gave me a little extra allowance to spend, so everything is on me.
He sits down, next to her. The two eat, with Lucy looking like it was the first time she was trying it.
Lucy: This is good.
Kouta smiles at her again, causing her to blush.
Lucy: But its a little cold.
Kouta: Of coarse, its made out of ice.
Cut to the two throwing away their empty cups.
Kouta: Hey.
He takes her hand.
Kouta: Lets look around a little more.
Lucy: Sure.
Cut to the two walking through the zoo, hand in hand. Lucy eventually lets her other hand latch on.
Kouta: Whats wrong?
After a moment of silence, Lucy speaks.
Lucy: Tomorrow, what time are you leaving?
Kouta: I think we're leaving at night. Or we're taking a night train anyway. But before that, I'm going to a festival with my cousin.
Lucy: Oh, okay.
Kouta couldn't stop the What if's that ran through his mind, now knowing everything. 'What if I could have brought Yuka with me one day and the two became friends? That way when I left, Lucy would still have a friend she could easily access until I came back.' He shook his head to dispel those thoughts. They would lead no where.
Cut to Kouta checking out a map as Lucy stands back.
Kouta: Okay, so where do you wanna go next? This place is so big, its hard to choose.
Man: Did you hear? There was another one of those murders.
Everyone's moods is dropped once again at the remind of Lucy's wrongs.
'Damn it. Whenever I would remember this day, I would leave out the parts with the scared people and the DNA voice. I was so used to it being like that, that I forgot about them.' Lucy berates herself.
Lucy looks to her side to see a man and woman sitting together.
Woman: This is the third one, right? It's getting kind of scary.
Man: What have the police been doing? It's a joke!
Lucy: Shoot.
Lucy (Thoughts): Looks like time to kill again if I want a place to sleep... KILL AGAIN?!
The camera zooms out from her face, showing a dark and empty environment. Lucy's hair and eyes are purple for some reason. It is implied that this is in Lucy's mind.
The inhabitants are shocked as to what is going on.
"Is... is this Lucy's mind?" Mayu questions, seeing similar sequences in anime.
"I... I think so." Kouta looks to Lucy, who is equally in shock as the rest of them.
"You'll... you'll see it?" Lucy weakly says.
"It?" Kouta questions.
Lucy (Thoughts): Did I say that? Whats wrong with me? Why do I think about killing all the time.
DNA: Its because you like killing people. Isn't it?
Lucy (Thoughts): I don't.
DNA: If you don't kill first, the humans will kill you. It's only a matter of time.
Two other Diclonius with bandages wrapped around their heads exposing only one eye slowly slide on either side of Lucy.
'What the hell Is that thing?" Yuka thinks. 'Could it be another split personality, like Nyu, though different in its behaviour and functioning? Or was this just a Diclonius thing?'
' That was inside of her all along?' Kouta thinks to himself. This cast Lucy's actions in a whole different light. The voice... whatever it was, was taking advantage of her underdeveloped, scarred mind and convincing her to do all those things. 'It would make her just as much as a victim as the people she killed.' He realizes.
Nana was frightened at the prospect the scene brings. When she almost lost it with Bando, she felt some nagging feeling urging her to kill him. Though it wasn't to the extent shown on screen, did it mean this voice thing was inherit to all Diclonius, including herself? The possibility terrified her.
"My God..." Mayu is the only one to speak, just as struck with horror as everyone else.
Lucy (Thoughts): But thats not an excuse. I can't keep killing people who haven't done anything wrong.
'Yes!' Kouta thought. 'Keep fighting it!' He knew Lucy was not a remorseless killer deep down.
DNA: You should know by now, that it is my destiny to take human life.
' Is our purpose really to kill innocent people only to then replace them?' Nana couldn't believe that. She wouldn't believe it. Purpose or not, she would never kill anyone, least of all humans who would have no defense against her.
Lucy: Shut up!
Kouta: What?
Lucy looks up again to find herself in the real world.
Lucy: Oh, sorry, it's nothing. I'm just a little tired because its so hot.
"Maybe it was just a hallucination. Lucy did say it was hot." Mayu says, though even her ton is unconvincing.
"No. It came back when the heat wasn't a problem." Lucy lowly says.
Kouta can't help but stress out about being there but not being able to help. ' If only I knew, I could try to help her someway. Ease her mind, bring her to the festival, ANYTHING!'
Kouta: Well, then, I know where we can cool off.
Lucy: Huh?
Cut to small lake where Kouta and Lucy walk in, barefoot.
Lucy: Wow. The water feels so good.
The two spend a moment to simply enjoy the water.
Kouta: Hey!
Lucy looks over to him, only to get her face splashed.
Kouta: Your face is dirty.
Kouta laughs at her as Lucy looks unamused. Lucy then pushes him down, into the water, stopping his laughing. Lucy laughs a little at this.
Lucy: Now it looks like you're the one that needs a bath.
Kouta: You little-
Kouta grabs Lucy's legs, causing her to tip over, into the water.
Kouta: That was payback.
Lucy: You started it.
Lucy kicks a splash at him before standing back up. The two get into a splash fight.
Cut to the two's clothes laid out on a rock. The camera then shows the two naked and sitting with their backs to each other.
Yuka, for the first time this episode, broke her silence. "Woah! Woah! What is going on here!"
"Oh. I forgot about this part." Kouta turns red in embarrassment. Lucy turns red, but for a whole nother reason.
"But you... that... um... that's indecent." Mayu says.
"We were just kids trying to dry our clothes. Our thoughts never went towards anything dirty or anything!" Kouta desperately tries to reassure them.
Kouta: We won't be able to ride the bus until our cloths are dry.
"See!" Kouta exclaims.
Lucy: So... todays the day we say goodbye, huh?
Kouta: Yeah...
Kouta then hums Lilium, making Lucy look a little surprised.
Lucy: Kouta?
Kouta peaks back a little to see Lucy has completely turned around to face him.
Kouta: Ah!
He quickly turns away.
"Inching closer to something dirty." Yuka says with slight irritation. 'At least the nudity is censored here. But Kouta got naked with another girl! When they were 10 no less!'
Lucy: In my whole life... I've never had as much fun as I've had today. Never in my whole life. Nothing even comes close.
Kouta: You're exaggerating.
Lucy: I'll never forget about today. Not for the rest of my life. Lucy rests her head on Kouta's shoulder, causing him to tense up.
"Getting closer." Yuka says.
"I was so happy about the day I had, I just wanted to show him how thankful and happy I was." Lucy snaps back, slightly irritated.
Cut to on the bus, when the sun seems to be setting. The two are sitting together on the back.
Lucy: Kouta?
Kouta: Hm?
Lucy: You know, the festival you're going to?
Kouta: Yeah?
Lucy: Do you think... do you think it would be a problem if I came with you?
Yuka's mind went to if Lucy went to the festival. She obviously didn't because he never saw her, but what if Kouta HAD brought her along? 'We probably wouldn't have gotten along. She was another girl Kouta's age after all. Wouldn't want to have her competing for his attention.' Even though it's ended up that way anyway.
' If only I told her she could come. She would've been able to meet Kanae and Yuka, gain more friends and maybe even let go of her killer instincts. It would have made her day.' Kouta thought, depressed that that is not how things played out.
Kouta: I'm sorry. I already made a promise that I would go with my cousin.
Lucy: I see. Thats how things go I guess.
Kouta: I'm really sorry. If I hadn't made that promise...
Lucy: Don't worry about it Kouta. So this cousin of yours... she's a girl, right?
Yuka had her suspicions, however this episode kept proving with out fail that those suspicions are true. Lucy really did have feelings for Kouta. She eyes the Diclonius, sitting close with him right now. 'Maybe she still has feelings for him.'
The bus bumps a bit, sending Lucy into Kouta's arms.
Kouta: Are you okay?
Lucy: Yeah.
Kouta: So what were you talking about?
Lucy: Oh, nothing.
DNA: A cousin? Kouta must be taking another girl to the festival.
The scene slowly transitions to Lucy's mind again.
Kouta, once again cursed himself for everything that has happened. Why did the bump have to happen there, when Lucy was asking her question? Maybe he wouldn't get it and simply answer truthfully like he should have done. Considering what happens next, it should have been obvious that something was wrong and she desperately needed him. But he missed all the sighs.
DNA: You'd hate it if that happened now, wouldn't you. It would break your heart.
Lucy (thoughts): Stop fooling around.
The bandaged Diclonius is by Lucy's side again.
DNA: If he breaks your heart, it seems to me that it's only fair if you kill him.
All in the room, mentally encouraged the past Lucy to fight back against the voice. Even Kouta, knowing she would give in in the end.
Lucy (thoughts): Thats not fair at all!
DNA: If you kill him now, he'll never get a chance to break your heart. It's just that simple.
Lucy: Shut up! Who the hell are you!
A strange moaning sound can be heard.
"What the hell." Mayu whispered at the sound.
"I need to be thankful that this has never happened to me." Nana mutters in horror.
"I'm sorry I didn't help. I should have seen the sighs that doe thing was going on. I'm sorry." Kouta apologizes.
"Kouta... please don't apologize. It's all my fault." Lucy begs him. "Everything in the end, it was all my fault."
"That's not true at all, Lucy." Kouta tries to assure her, but to no avail.
DNA: As if you didn't already know.
The scene then shows Lucy choking out Kouta.
Kouta: I... I can't breath.
"Geez Kouta! That wouldn't tip you off that something was wrong with her?!" Mayu exclaims. Yuka mentally agrees.
"I didn't know what to think! I was just a kid!" Kouta says.
"A pretty dense kid." Yuka mutters.
"I'm sorry for that. I was tying to stop the voice and-" Kouta silences Lucy by putting his thumb to her lips.
"Don't. I understand." Kouta whispers. Yuka eyes the interaction with jealousy.
' How the hell can they be bonding over watching Lucy choke him out on the past? I mean, WHAT?' She was so confused on what she had to do to get Kouta to see her that way.
Lucy then seems to come to her senses and releases Kouta.
Lucy: I'm sorry. Are you alright?
Kouta coughs a bit as he recovers.
Kouta: Hey, you scared me. Whats with you all of a sudden?
Lucy covers her face.
Kouta: Hey.
Lucy: Kouta.
Kouta: Yeah?
Lucy: Will you do me a favour? If i keep killing people... if I can't find some way to stop myself from doing it...
Kouta: Hey, what are you talking about?
Lucy looks right at him.
Lucy: Kouta. I want you to kill me.
That should have been the big red flag. She said it all right to his face. ' How could I be so ignorant.' Kouta thought.
Nana thought about Lucy's words for a moment. When she became a part of the Inn, she had appointed herself the task of ensuring Lucy didn't step out of line lest she put her down. ' Turns out, Lucy already had given out the job to somebody. Though why Kouta? How could he possibly kill Lucy when those more powerful than him tried and failed?'
"I want you to know that my words then still apply." Lucy says. "If I ever start again... please... please kill me." ' That way, you can also avenge your family.'
"Lucy..." Kouta said, as shock as he was when he first heard what she was saying, though now understanding it. "I can't. Your my friend and I can't just kill you."
"But Kouta-"
"There has to be another way. Nana's here without issue, and so should you too. If you ever hear the voice again, you could talk to us about it. We can do something... anything to helpyou!" Kouta exclaims.
"Yeah. And not just Kouta. All of us are here to help you. Please, don't hesitate to ask." Mayu adds. Nana nods along with her
Lucy was glad inside of all the support they were giving her.
Kouta: What?
Lucy: Nothing.
'Not nothing!' Mayu stresses.
Fade to the stone steps. The sun is almost gone. The two stand at the top of the steps.
Kouta: I really love the view of the ocean from up here.
Lucy: Thank you for today Kouta.
Kouta: Don't worry about it. I also had a lot of fun today. I really did.
Lucy nods before eventually humming Lilium. Kouta eventually joins in as they hum together.
Yuka can't help the jealousy she feels. ' I should have been the one to hum with him on those steps.' She can't help but think.
Fade to the night time.
Kouta: Well...
Lucy: Yeah?
Kouta: We're coming back next year. I'll see you again.
Lucy: Hey Kouta?
Kouta: What is it?
Lucy: That cousin you're taking to the festival tomorrow, did you say it was a boy or was it a girl?
Kouta's eyes widen slightly, and he looks like he is considering something.
Kouta can't help but look away. Here stood the mistake that led to many lives being ruined, Lucy's included. All because HE lied. He knew there was more to it then that, but his mind could onlylead him up to that singular conclusion.
Kouta: My cousin's a boy.
Yuka couldn't help but fit more pieces together. 'If Lucy found out Kouta lied, that voice might use it as ammunition to continue killing...' it hit her. ' That's exactly what happened. All those deaths, the supposed bomb, it was her. Lucy saw us and lost it. Maybe she even...' her train of thought is stopped. 'No. It's impossible. If Kouta has his memory, he should despise Lucy if she was the one that killed father and Kanae.'
Lucy: Oh. Okay, thats great. Then, tomorrow... tomorrow night I'll come see you off at the station, right?
Kouta: Wha?
Lucy: Bye.
With that, Lucy runs off.
Kouta: Hey...
"Oh, Uh, sorry for running off. What more did you want to say to me?" Lucy asked.
Kouta debates on wether he should tell her that he had actually changed his mind and wanted to take her to the festival. He ultimately decided against it. 'It'll just give her more guilt, realizing that a lot could have been avoided if she simply waited for a few seconds.' He instead answered with something that he also wanted to ask alongside his original question.
"I wanted to ask your name." He answers.
Silence.
"Huh?" Nana goes.
"So you spent all that time with her, and never thought to ask her name?" Mayu asks.
"Well when you say it like that, it sounds stupid." Kouta says.
"Kinda does feel stupid." Nana offhandedly says.
Cut to the next day. Lucy is kneeling near the marker she placed for her dog.
Lucy: The time I shared with you is going to be the only happy memory I'll have to show for my whole life.
Cut to the festival. Back to Lucy.
Lucy: But then...
And then cut to Lucy at the festival.
Lucy: If I see Kouta...
Lucy finds a boy whole looks like Kouta waiting at a stall
Lucy: if I see him, then I'm going to be honest and tell him how I really feel.
Yuka suspectedit, but felt grim at being proven right. Not only the festival massacre, but Lucy's feelings for Kouta. Feelings she may still have.
The boy turns his head to reveal he is not Kouta. Lucy looks a little saddened by not seeing Kouta, but then she hears a voice.
Yuka: No! No!
Mayu and Nana's hearts stopped at realizing what was happening.
"This isn't going to end well." Nanashyly says.
Lucy looks over to see Yuka hugging Kouta.
Kouta: Stop being dumb. People can see us.
Lucy can only stare on as Yuka keeps crying and Kouta comforts her.
Lucy: But why...
Someone then bumps into Lucy from behind, knocking her down.
Man: Stupid kid! You're in the way!
The man walks around her.
Everyone frowns at the man.
'It's like adding insult to injury.' Mayu thinks.
Lucy (thoughts): I see... Kouta already had someone. He already loves somebody.
Kouta (figment): That's right.
Lucy looks up in her mindscape to see Kouta.
Kouta (figment): Theres no way I'd ever fall for a girl with horns sticking out of her head.
"Tha- that's not true." Kouta whispered. "Don't listen to her."
Yuka's eyes nearly bulged upon hearing Kouta's first statement.
Lucy (thoughts): Then Kouta, why did you...
Kouta: (figment): I told you at the zoo. I like watching weird looking animals.
"That's not him at all." Nana whimpers. Should something traumatic happen to her, would her mind torture her with those she loved?
Lucy starts sobbing until some blood drops catch her attention.
Tomoe (figment): Hey.
Lucy looks up to see a headless tomoe. He approaches her.
Tomoe (figment): You're not human, freak! This world was made for humans!
Lucy balls up as if it would make the horrors go away. The corpse of her dog then plops down before her. She looks up to see it lying in a pool of blood. Lucy gets up, but another figure is awaiting her.
Girl (figment): Stupid girl...
Lucy looks to the girl, who is covering her face.
Girl (figment): You had faith in a human. But humans don't have to tell the truth to you.
The girl removes her hands, revealing a bright red orb where her eye was presumably plucked from her socket. Lucy can only stare on in horror.
The group all tried imagining such a scenario happening to them when they where kids.
Kouta would imagine the experience would traumatized him into his amnesia much like he had, though maybe he would develop something worse? Not only is Lucy witnessing death, but the deaths she caused, as well as having himself talk down to her. He turned to see Lucy covering her ears and having her eyes firmly closed. He hugged her to give her some semblance of comfort.
Yuka felt she would have been devastated into unresponsiveness. 'A kid shouldn't ever have to experience something like that. He'll, ANYONE shouldn't have to experience something like that.'
The scene hit Mayu as well, imagining it coming around the time she ran away from home. ' What would I do if I saw something like that...?'
Nana imagined her papa would say he never loved her, and everyone here would say something similar. She forced the thoughts out of her mind when they became to painful to think of.
Lucy (thoughts): No more. I can't take it anymore. No friends no home... I have nothing now. I'm completely alone.
Kouta hugged Lucy tighter upon hearing how broken her tone was. "I'm so sorry."
Lucy didn't have the energy to tell him she never blamed him.
She turns around and vomits. As she does so, a naked body with a strand of bandage dragging behind her approaches Lucy. She then kneels down and comforts her, rubbing her back. Lucy looks up to be greeted by the one lone eye. Lucy inches away.
DNA: You should have figured it out by now. This world wasn't made for people like me.
Lucy (thoughts): So what... should I do about it?
' No! Don't listen to it!' Mayu thinks. It was like the personification of a devil on someone's shoulder.
DNA: Its so simple.
The bandages unravel to reveal Lucy herself.
DNA: All you have to do is remake the world. And I have more than enough power to make that dream come true.
The DNA voice offers her hand.
DNA: Choose between cold shoulders, hateful glances, and a life in the gutter. Or...
The scene shows reality, where Lucy is still on the ground.
Drunk: Get out of the way you dumb brat! I'm sick of you street trash. Go sleep in a dumpster or something!
Woman 1: Look at that girl.
Woman 2: She's so strung out on drugs she's talking to herself.
Kouta was absolutely taken aback at the lack of sympathy or concern among the passerby's. 'For all they knew she could have been having a medical episode and was in need of serious help!' He almost didn't blame Lucy, knowing the choice she would make.
Back to Lucy's mind...
DNA: Or would you like to make this world a home for yourself?
Lucy looks resigned.
Lucy (thoughts): Kouta...
'No! No! Kouta still cares for you! Don't do this!" Nana cries out in her mind. But deep down, like Mayu, she knew what was going to happen. She just didn't want it to happen.
Drunk: I said get off the dam street.
Lucy slowly raises. When she's up, she takes her hat off.
Drunk: Huh? What are those things?
Lucy (thoughts): Good bye. I really loved you.
The hat falls as Lucy joins hands with the voice.
Despite knowing it wouldn't happen, their hearts fell seeing it happen.
"I'm so sorry." Lucy sobbed. "I never should have listened. I never should have taken its hand."
Kouta attempts to calm Lucy.
A large vector swipe and there is blood everywhere as people all around Lucy are cut in half. Lucy only looks saddened as she is lightly splattered with it. People around begin to panic.
bystander 1: What the hell?!
Bystander 2: I think it was a bomb!
'I can see why they might think that. Vectors might as well have been fantasy to them.' Yuka thought. 'This also confirms that Lucy was responsible for the massacre.' Though Yuka couldn't find herself to place the entirety of the blame on her. After all the mental trauma and prodding, any kid with the power would be inclined to do the same. 'Though that doesn't make it right...'
Everyone then runs around in different directions. Lucy remains unaffected. She slowly walks among the panicking people.
Woman: Hey little girl.
Lucy stops.
Woman: Uh, are you alright? You're covered in bloo-
Lucy slices off the woman's head. The scene plays in slow motion as the camera shows Lucy's face. The dead glare she had similar to her current day's version is now present.
Kouta refuses to look away. He felt partially responsible for what his actions had brought.
Lucy (thoughts): I'll destroy you. All of you.
The camera angle changes to show Kanae had witnessed the whole thing. She can only stare on. Terrified.
'That's how she knew.' Kouta mentally realizes.
'Poor Kanae!' Yuka thinks. More evidence was pointing toward Lucy being her uncle and other cousins killer, but the scene before her of Lucy and Kouta calmly sitting together seemed to disprove the entire thing. Yuka had no idea what to think now.
Cut to the outside of the train station where Kouta's family stands. Police sirens can be heard.
Kanae: It's true! I saw it! There was a girl with horns and everywhere she went people got hurt really bad! They were falling down everywhere!
Yuka moves closer to Kouta. As this is going on, the camera pans up, revealing Lucy is watching them.
Lucy: Liar.
Cut back to present day where Lucy awakens to an argument.
Yuka: You do know how to cook rice, right?
Kouta: Well...
Lucy spies the two other people present in the room.
Yuka: Please tell me you're kidding.
Lucy tries to get up.
Yuka: Anyone can make rice, it's the easiest thing in the world.
"I can't make rice." Lucy brings up.
"Neither can I." Nana sadly adds.
"You two have a valid excuse." Yuka says, pulling herself from her thoughts. They were getting her no where and we're giving needless frustration.
Cut to the Maple inns entrance where Mayu and Nana stand.
Nana: Theres no mistake. That girl is Lucy. I'm sure its her, I know it!
Mayu: Yeah, but, do you think... is Nyu really...
Nana: This is strange.
Mayu: What?
Nana: Its too quite. Your friends in there, did she kill them too?
"I mean... it's is night. People are usually quite around this time." Kouta brings up.
"I didn't know that! My only other experiences in the outside world was during the day." Nana explains.
Mayu: No! It couldn't be!
Mayu attempts to rush in.
Nana: Mayu no!
Lucy opens the door.
Mayu: Nyu...
Lucy looks at Nana.
Nana: I thought so. It is you.
The two stare at each other, ready to attack.
Episode end.
"Maybe we should take a break?" Kouta suggests. "These last few were... a lot."
Wordlessly agreeing, the other residents leave to go contemplate what they've just seen by their lonesome.
