Chapter 2: Susan in 1070
In a Mediaeval village on the outskirts of the flat planet known as Geminus, sometime after the Norman Conquest of 1066, there was the unmistakable sound of a Type 40 TARDIS appearing, a somewhat wheezy noise that cannot be described in the English language, or indeed any other language, but that would most certainly not be forgotten in a rush by any lifeforms who heard it. This is 40% due to the fact that it is normally followed closely by bloodshed on a large scale.
Susan Kington tried experimentally walking out, to see if the landscape was any different than it had been 937 years later. Her mouth hung agape as she glanced around the field, a small village in the distance, filled with people living their lives. Very… old lives, it should be said, but lives nonetheless.
The Doctor followed closely, a big grin on his face, glancing at her every few seconds, as if expecting a reaction.
After a few minutes, she decided that it would be best to play it cool.
"So… where's this, then?"
"1070, mediaeval town?… village, Wales."
She punched the air. "Wales! And Earth?"
He shook his head. "Planet called Geminus, Latin for twin. A flat replica of Earth with the same History, countries, important figures… blah blah blah… different locations though."
"And is there any… reason for a literal flat Earth lying in the Universe?"
This was answered with a shrug, which basically said 'Oh well, this kind of thing happens all the time, welcome to my world' in six languages at once.
"Okay, you said different locations, so where's this, then?"
"The town that never rains." he said, leaning against the TARDIS and yawning.
"And a name?"
"None." said the Doctor, grinning again at the look on her face. "Really! It's just called the town that never rains! It predates the word town by a couple of hundred years, but that's what it's called!"
"Okay, I believe you! Now stop biting my head off!"
Looking around, he asked her, "So! Are we gonna go back into the TARDIS, or are we gonna explore?"
Susan grinned. "Well, since it's my first time, we may as well,"
As they walked, Susan tried to pay attention to everything they walked past. The cows, the sheep, the fences, the carrots lying around, and so on. There was something about seeing a place that looked so much like Earth that really made you notice the details you may not have otherwise. Like how her eyes had suddenly been sharpened to notice every blade of grass and appreciate them. Maybe that was how blind people felt when they saw things for the first time. Or maybe not.
There was a certain detail, though. There was a farm close to all the animals. There was a scythe lying on the ground. There was a bucket, lying beside it. And it was all drenched in…
"Huh?"
The Doctor jumped. "Huh what?"
"Well, you said it never rains here, and yet there's a bunch of water just lying about?"
He jerked his thumb backwards, pointing towards a large lake close by.
Susan had relaxed for around six minutes before she noticed the voices from before. Only they had changed, rather than being the average bustle of day to day life, they had become panicked shouts.
"What's going on?" Susan asked. "It sounds as though someone's died!"
"Welcome to my world," answered the Doctor, and he ran off, hurriedly.
