What Friends are For Chapter Four
A/N I edited Ch 3 to include another note. I'm, in essence, restating the note here for those who have already read Ch 3. Yes, there are noticeable similarities between this and one I did for Adam 12 (That was written for my special needs friend as well). However, since I have not simply taken that story, removed the names of the Adam 12 characters and plugged in the names of Emergency characters, I am not breaking any fanfiction rules.
A/N Sorry, if any reader is looking for romance, even a hint, I haven't purposely put it in. In fact, I kicked out any idea of any type of romance out a long time ago.
Roy and Johnny, who had had no choice but to report to work, had just arrived at the hospital and were walking down the hospital corridor, towards the nurses' station to get more supplies when Dr. Early walked up to them. "I don't suppose you have any news about the captain?" Johnny asked, thinking that Captain Stanley might have been found and brought to the hospital. He didn't bother specifying which Captain - assuming the good doctor would know who he was asking about.
As Johnny figured, Dr. Early didn't bother asking him to specify anything. "Yes, only, it's not the news you want." The kind-hearted doctor replied. "I received a call from one of the orderlies who had time off and went to help in the search."
"What did he say?" Roy spoke up when Dr. Early hesitated.
"Seems like they found a piece of mail on the ground; addressed to Captain Stanley,." Dr. Early wasn't surprised by the shocked looks that leapt onto the two paramedics' faces.
"Where?" Johnny asked, the concern and fear he had for Captain Stanley could be seen clearly in his eyes and his voice.
Roy's eyes held the same look.
"A mile from the crash site, in some tall grass near a dirt road. He said they didn't know how people missed seeing it before." Dr. Early replied. "Eddie-one of the searchers-called me. He gave me that information to pass along, also said it was a good thing they found the envelope-as they had started thinking Captain Stanley must have wandered into another area. The letter proves different."
"There's nothing out there. If we don't find him soon…" Roy's voice trailed off.
"That's not quite true. That is, from what I hear there are a few homes out there, only they're not exactly close to each other. Don't know how many, if any, have been contacted." Dr. Early looked at both paramedics, sympathy was in his eyes.
"The police said no one's called. I would think that, if that someone up in the hills had found the captain, they'd have contacted the police-or the police had contacted them." Johnny pointed out.
"Basically, I made the same comment to Eddie. He said the police said that the phone lines are down. They'd been able to talk to one of the families in that area, but the family has seen nothing. I don't know anything besides that." Dr. Early then added he planned on checking in at the Command Center the police had set up near the wreckage first chance he got.
"I'll be doing the same thing." Roy said, before excusing himself, saying he and Johnny needed to get back to the station.
"We'll both be rejoining the search." Johnny told Dr. Early before catching up with Roy.
"You know, if they've found Cap's wallet, they might actually find him before we get to the Command Center." Johnny exited the hospital and headed for their rescue truck.
"Maybe, but-unless I hear different-I'm going to the Command Center." Roy climbed into the driver's seat.
"I wasn't trying to talk you out of it." Johnny shut the passenger's door. "Guess I'm just wishing he'd be in his office when we drive up to the station. It's not right having anyone but the Captain in that room."
Roy, who was tolerating having a temporary captain out of necessity, didn't hesitate to let Johnny know he felt the same way. "Tell me about it."
Captain Stanley, who had asked Mrs. Hansen to open the bedroom window, as he wished to feel the comfortable breeze that was blowing outside, couldn't help but chuckle as Cassie, who had climbed onto a crate set outside, appeared in the window-resting her arms on the bottom of the window sill. The child's hair had been pulled back and put into a ponytail.
"Hello." He smiled and asked why she didn't simply come into the room if she wanted to see him. "I don't bite."
Cassie shook her head. "I was in the house. When I started walking towards the bedroom door, Mother told me to stay away from it. She told me 'Mr. Cap is probably sleeping'."
Mr. Cap. He inwardly sighed. Cap did feel right, but the 'Mister' in front of it did not. Though, he said nothing about it. "So, you chose the window instead?" He couldn't help but chuckle again.
"Why not? Mother didn't tell me to stay away from it, and I could see if you were awake or not." Cassie replied matter-of-factually. "If you were asleep, I would have found something else to do." Cassie leaned forward slightly and asked him how long he was going to stay in bed. "You look fine to me now."
"Well, for the most part I'm pretty sure I am." He assured her. "I just need a little more rest." He didn't think it was necessary to explain to the child that he had tried standing up on a number of occasions-only to find himself getting dizzy shortly afterwards. He hoped it was something that would pass, not something more serious caused by whatever accident he'd had.
"Mother tried the phone again, just before I walked out the front door." Cassie climbed up and sat on the window sill. "It's still not working, but she said her cousin is supposed to have our car back to us by tonight." She paused, a worried look appeared in her eyes.
"What is it?" Captain Stanley asked, concerned for the young girl.
"You have no place to go. I mean, if you don't know who you are." She then tugged at his heart strings by innocently offering to let him stay in her tree house. "it's better than sleeping on the ground somewhere."
Before he could make any sort of reply, the bedroom door opened. Neither Cassie nor 'Mr. Cap' were surprised to see Jennifer looking at Cassie- a bit of frustration in her eyes. Though, the good woman couldn't help but start grinning and shaking her head as both Cassie and 'Mr. Cap' simultaneously said, "You never said a word about the window."
* Again: If anyone is looking for romance, this story is not it.
