Kagome swore all of the oxygen in the room had left after Hiina uttered those words as everyone sat in stunned silence. The room quickly muted and a few heads turned towards her, and the only thing she could do was hold her breath as she physically felt the blood drain from her face. Ayame looked over at her, but she didn't give kagome a reassuring smile, in fact she looked worried and it made her feel even worse.
I'm going to be sick.
A muscle ticked in his jaw, after what seemed like an eternity kouga finally spoke, and Kagome was sure he was going to tell Ezume no, in the most polite way he could, and deny it, deny that he had a child, deny that he was going to marry Hiina, deny it all. And that he was going to tell everyone it was some sick joke. He finally stood up.
"Let's talk somewhere more private." he barely gave her a glance before he grabbed Hiina by the arm and dragged her away with Ezume trailing behind.
He didn't say no.
He didn't deny it.
"He didn't say no. He didn't deny it." she repeated again numbly, and Ayame rubbed circles on her back.
"He didn't say yes either." she responded softly, but it was of no use, after that confession from Hiina there was no way she would be able to console her, or could for the matter. After kouga had left , ayame excused herself and grabbed kagome taking her to her room. No one said anything, but a few gave her sympathetic glances.
Kagome nodded apathetically, and she turned to look at Ayame, "is-is it true that it would make…their allegiance stronger?"
Ayame hesitated, what could she tell her and what should she tell her?
"Just tell me ayame." I just need the truth.
"Well…" she tucked her hair behind her ear, "yes it would, especially if…if they have a child together. Hiina is the daughter of the old chief, he's still alive but I'm guessing he can still pull a few strings here and there, and if kouga accepts…the amount of land he would own…I mean he owns a lot of it through alliances and we, I mean his tribe is very powerful already. If a war ever breaks out, people would go to him, and he has a lot of people that he can count on." she paused again.
"It would be just a political marriage if-if it happened, and I'm sure Ezume is being forced to do this..." her nostrils flared, why did her boyfriend not give her a heads up, "if kouga denies that the daughter is his…and it turns out that she is, war could break out between our tribes, because it looks bad and a marriage proposal was rejected. It would be bloody." she bit her lip nervously. For the first time, Kouga was caught in the crossfire and there was no way he could get out of it easily. Either reject the marriage proposal and risk a war, or reject the marriage proposal and his possible child and also risk a war.
A knock startled them both.
"Hey sis, can we come in?" It was Ginta.
Ayame turned to tell them no but Kagome nodded, "it's okay." she whispered, she knew Ginta and Hakkaku were there for support.
"Yes come in."
Ginta and Hakkaku came in to Ayame's room, Ginta kneeled down and hugged her followed by Hakkaku and she gave them a feeble smile.
"How ya doing sis?" Ginta asked gently, and Kagome wanted to cry.
Sis…would they call Hiina that too..if-if…?
Her lip trembled and she blinked her eyes, she was not about to cry, "well, I mean not great to be honest, it was pretty shocking…did you guys know?"
"That he might have a kid or about Hiina?" Hakkaku asked, earning a glare from Ginta.
At least be more delicate about this man, thought Ginta.
"Um, yes to both."
Hakkaku and Ginta looked at each other, mentally communicating who was going to .
"Please, just one of you reply. Tell me the truth, whatever it is." No matter how difficult.
Ginta nodded, "we knew somewhat about Hiina, just that her and Kouga used to hang out when he was going around-" kagome paled and Ginta immediately corrected it, "going around doing his training, they were never dating if that's what you're asking, and he only mentioned her maybe twice. As far as having a child, no he never mentioned having a kid or even knowing about one."
Kagome nodded, "okay, so there's a possibility that he didn't know at least."
"Kagome, if he had known he would raised the kid with or without her, he's not that kind of person that would deny his own blood."
This was all too much for her, and her head was starting to throb. She wished she could go to sleep and forget about this mess and worry about it later but she needed answers. And she needed to talk to her boyfriend who might possibly soon become someone's fiance. The pit in her stomach only seemed to grow, he was still with her and she wondered what they could possibly be talking about still.
"So about the unification thing…" she rubbed her temple, "I mean so- if the child is his would it be…a good idea to just accept?" she asked.
"I mean he would be stupid not to." Hakkaku's response made her wince, and he yelped when Ginta elbowed his side, "what she wanted the truth!"
"I appreciate the honesty."
"Kagome? Do you need some fresh air? You're starting to look more pale now." Ayame was grabbing her, and she realized that somehow she had been swaying while sitting up.
"No no I'm fine I promise." she dug her nails into her palm "Do you think he will want to get married to her, just because he might have a daughter?"
"Oh no, but it will be tricky to say no to her without a war potentially breaking out, we know ezume wouldn't want that, he is friends with kouga, but of he says no outright and the kid is his…it would be a great offense to the previous chief and Hiina." Ginta sighed, "Kagome he lo- he wouldn't want to do that to you. But if…"
"If it's his kid, he really wouldn't have a choice." Hakkaku finished, and he looked down at the ground. No matter how much Kouga loved Kagome, his loyalty ran deep with his people and he would never justify spilling blood over only one person.
"Whatever happens, you'll be our sis, nothing will change for us. Got it?" Ginta hugged her and her eyes watered at the sight of his misty eyes.
"I think-I think I need some air right now guys," she swiped at her tears quickly ready to walk out when she saw a little girl walk past the entrance and her heart tightened.
Kouga dragged Hiina to the meeting room with Ezume trailing behind them.
"What do you mean I have a daughter?" His heart pounded in his ears.
There was no way he had a child, after all this time why was she showing up and announcing it. Especially now that he was with kagome. Why all of a sudden? Why why why? He was angry at how they had ambushed him, he could understand why Ezume was at least easing into it, but Hiina outright said it in front of everyone. As soon as the words had left her mouth he felt like everything went to shit, Kagome had looked at him to find answers and he had just…left her. Yes he was angry, but he couldn't help but feel just the tiniest bit of excitement at the possibility of being a father, even if it wasn't ideal he would care for his daughter but at the same time, he was terrified. If only if he had a daughter, that meant he would be tied to Hiina forever by blood which meant he would probably have to marry her, and the thought of that made him queasy.
She grinned, looking down at his hand that was still grasping her wrist and he dropped it quickly, as if she burned him.
"Have you missed me?" she asked, and his nostrils flared. He was sensing Kagome's anxiety and sadness and he wanted so badly to run over to her and comfort her but he had other issues at the moment that needed to be addressed.
"What is wrong with you! Do you have any idea what you-"
"Is it true you're dating a human? A miko no less?" she scowled at him, showing him exactly how she felt about it. Pure disgust, "you know it would ruin your bloodline if you have a half breed with her right? Unless you're just messing around wit-"
"Leave her out of this. What the fuck are you playing at, answer the question do I have a daughter or not?" he hissed, his patience was waning the more she dragged this on.
She grinned at him, "yes you do. Do you want to meet her?" she glanced at Ezume and nodded, and he left the room. Minutes passed by which felt like hours and he resumed with a small child, and he handed her off to Hiina. She smiled down and pressed a soft kiss on her head, and gently pushed her towards Kouga.
"Mei, this is Kouga."
Kouga kneeled down on one leg and studied her, and he felt his heart sink.
