Wow guys, thanks for all your support! I have the plot pretty well planned out from here, so chapters shouldn't take so long for me to write. Anyways here's chapter 2, We see a lot more of Roy, Oh and obviously this is an AU. Hughes hasn't died if you haven't figured that out already... Also... this chapter is a bit shorter... Not by much though... Okay... I'll shut up, enjoy!
Disclaimer: I don't own FMA or it's characters.
Oliver Cooper and Louis Tichs are mine.
Chapter 2
Hughes and Hawkeye at that point bust down the door, making Edward turn to face them in response… Roy still sat frozen unsure of what he was doing, or what to do, His mind was completely blank.
"Ed, what are you talking about, you're delusional…" Hawkeye said assertively.
"But I-"
"Ed… you shouldn't joke about something like that... pregnancy is a beautiful thing…." Hughes cooed happily.
There was too much noise, Hawkeye and Hughes were both babbling on at the same time, both about different things, Roy still sat motionless.
Ed was nearly shaking with frustration, "Call. Oliver." That was all he said, at that Roy looked up.
The colonel glanced at Hughes and Hawkeye, "what are you two doing…? Get the hell out this is between Edward and myself… none of this is your business." Hughes and Hawkeye scurried out of the office. Ed and Roy both sighed with relief.
"Oliver said you might need some… persuasion... He told me to tell you to call him in this case."
Roy grabbed the phone and quickly dialed Oliver's number. It rang twice before picking up.
"Finally!" Oliver sighed with relief on the other end… "I've been waiting for this call all evening… do you know how tiring-"
Roy interrupted him, "Is it true…? Is Ed pregnant?"
Ed stood waiting expectantly. He watched Roy's face of confusion shift to one of understanding and awe. Then slowly as the conversation continued Ed saw fear creep across the colonel's face, yet his tone did not reflect his expression, he sounded chirpy and happy while talking to Oliver…
Roy listened to Oliver chatter on about this and that. Oliver got really quiet, when he spoke again his tone was grave, and filled with sorrow, like he had just been at a funeral, "Roy. You know what this means. Don't you?"
Roy's eyes flickered towards Ed and lingered there for a few seconds. Ed's face began to flush. The colonel's gaze shifted back in front of him, "Of course." He sounded frightful.
"Don't let it happen." With that Oliver clicked the button and the line went dead. Roy hung up the phone and stared at Ed. "I understand now… It makes perfect sense…"
Ed looked at Roy, "I'm not sure what your intentions are… but for so long I have tried to create life and I finally am, so with or without you, I'm going to have this baby."
Roy stood up quickly, "I wouldn't dare leave you alone with the baby… This child is as much mine as it is yours. I am responsible and I will not abandon you like that."
Ed suppressed a smile.
"I want you to stay over tonight… there are things we need to talk about." Roy murmured
Ed nodded, "I'll come by your office when work is over…" Roy nodded in agreement and stared after the blonde man carrying his baby.
The colonel watched as Ed yanked open the office door, "Wait, where are you going?"
Ed rolled his eyes, "I'm going to the library… I have research to do…" He slipped away and the door closed behind him. Just as it closed it opened again, Hughes and Hawkeye walked in.
Hawkeye's hands were placed firmly on her hips, and Hughes' arms were crossed over his chest, they stared down at Roy Mustang. He tried his best to ignore them. Hughes cleared his throat, Roy didn't look up. Hawkeye took out her gun and pressed it to Roy's head, "feel like talking now?"
Roy sighed and put his pen down.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Ed entered Roy's office as he was just finishing his explanation to Hawkeye and Hughes. They turned and saw the pregnant Ed, They both smiled deviously. Hughes called him over, cautiously Ed approached the desk. Riza pulled up his shirt revealing a slight buldge. "How far along are you?" She asked curiously.
Ed pushed his shirt back down angrily, "I'm three months…"
Her eyes widened, "You shouldn't be showing yet…"
Ed sighed and rolled his eyes, "Yeah, I'm not… that's not the baby… I was growing a womb… and so my belly is swollen… besides isn't every pregnancy different… so I could be showing" he said defiantly. "Now stop prodding me… I just want to be left alone…" He looked at Roy who was staring absently at his belly, where the bulge had been revealed, "are you ready to go?"
Roy looked up to meet Ed's eyes. He cleared his throat and stood up "Yes," he grabbed his jacket and put it on.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Once they arrived at Roy's house they hurried inside to escape the wind. Edward sat down on the couch briefly before a look of discomfort crossed his face. He stood up and rushed to the bathroom. Roy could hear him throwing up… he remembered the capsule Oliver had given to Ed that he saw. It had been prescribed for morning sickness. He felt guilty, Ed must've had it bad, otherwise he wouldn't need herbal remedies… and especially since it was from Oliver, he had a special way of increasing potency and maximizing the efficiency of the herbs, and if he gave Ed a prescription… it must've meant he was in bad shape.
He knocked on the door. "Ed, if you give me the prescription from Oliver I'll make some tea for you…" The door opened revealing a pale bleary eyed Edward. He pulled the capsule from his pocked and handed it to him, he retreated back into the bathroom. The door closed quietly behind him.
Roy went to make tea, meanwhile Ed sat on the floor of the bathroom, he glanced at the bathtub and then made the decision that heated water would help sooth his nausea. He ran the water and began to strip down.
The cool air gave him a cold sweat and he eagerly hopped into the tub filled with warm water. Roy knocked on the door and then entered. "I left the tea on the coffee table…" His voice faded out as he saw Ed laying in the warm water, with his eyes closed… he looked peaceful.
"Thank you," came his cool reply.
Roy started to strip down, "Ed sit up…" he did so, the space behind him was now occupied by Roy Mustang. He leaned back into him. Roy gently tugged at the hairband holding together Ed's braid, his hair neatly tumbled to his shoulders and the flame alchemist began to run his fingers through the silky gold hair.
Ed tilted his head so he could look at Roy, "We… have some things to talk about…"
Roy nodded in response, "Alright…"
Ed was silent for a moment, collecting his thoughts.
"I want to be a family… I want to be a couple…"
Roy knew this had been coming, Oliver's words echoed in his head, "You know what this means don't you?"
"Ed… I love you I do… and to be with you, for us to have a family… that's all I want now… but… I- we can't…"
Ed sat up suddenly, "Why not? Our jobs? I can keep a secret… so can you…"
Roy sighed, "No… it's more than that… it's always been much more than just that…"
Ed was annoyed he wasn't getting a straight answer, "Then what?!"
Roy took a deep breath, "Calm down first… then I'll tell you. You can't be getting riled up all the time now Ed… When you're stressed our baby is stressed." Roy placed his hand gently over Edward's stomach.
Ed leaned back into his lover, he sighed knowing that he was right.
Roy smiled feeling Ed's muscles relax into him, "Did Oliver ever mention a boyfriend or a lover?"
Ed thought back on it briefly, "Yeah… he said that you reminded him of him…"
Roy smiled at that, and continued, "His name was Louis Tichs,"
He paused to think and Edward took his chance, "Is he dead?"
Roy glared, "Just let me finish."
Ed quieted down again, "Anyways, He was called the Glowing Rain Alchemist that was his state-given name." He paused and ran his fingers through Ed's hair, "Only their closest friends knew about their relationship. When war came, the government sent them off to the same base, but separated them, because, Louis was being sent with a number of other water alchemists to cut off Ishval's water supply." He was quiet for a moment remembering all the terrible things that he and many others had to do.
He continued, "Oliver, as a medic was sent around to different bases to heal the wounded and sick… He and Louis rarely saw each other, but when they did you can imagine they were especially… affectionate… and frankly a bit careless. One day, they were found out… One of the higher ups caught them red handed. Immediately they were sent to different bases, and their punishment, was to never again be stationed together…"
Ed's breath hitched in his throat, "Will they do that to us…?"
Roy contemplated this for a minute, "That or worse…"
Ed raised an eyebrow curiously, "What's worse?"
"They take you into custody and do experiments on you…" Roy felt Ed tense up, "Relax… they're not going to take you away from me… I'll be damned if I let that happen."
"You can't promise me that…" Ed said nervously.
"You're right I can't... you're going to have to trust that I'm not going to let them do that…"
Ed smirked, "I'm not gonna let them do that…"
Roy smiled and kissed the top of his head, "I'd expect nothing less from you…"
"So we'll stay together… right?" Ed looked up curiously at Roy
"Ed this is about more than you and me… it's about protecting our baby… and all of our friends who know about us have to keep quiet too… Our livlihoods are in the hands of many… not just our own… "
Ed nodded, "I know that… and I fully grasp how terrifying this all is… believe me"
Roy ran his fingers through Ed's hair one last time, "now we should get out before the water gets cold."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Ed sat on the couch drinking his tea. He had wrapped himself up in a blanket. He could tell he was getting sick. Even wrapped up he still had shivers. Roy yawned and stretched closing his book. He stood from his chair and looked at Ed, "Are you alright."
Ed looked up at him, "Hmm? Oh yeah…"
Roy stared him down and Ed only smiled sheepishly. "Are you going to bed now?" The blonde inquired.
Roy nodded "Yeah... you're not?"
Ed shook his head, "No… When I was in Resembool… I would stay up late with Al while he put Trisha to sleep… so my sleeping schedule is way off…"
Roy placed his hand gently on Ed's shoulder before leaning down and placing a kiss on his temple, "don't stay up too late you have work tomorrow." Ed nodded and smiled watching as Roy left to his bedroom.
Ed sat on the couch waiting for sleep to drift over him, but it didn't. Instead he felt the familiar curl of nausea settle in his stomach. He got up and boiled some water for more tea. Whatever Oliver had done to those herbs worked miracles.
The Fullmetal alchemist stood staring off into space. The kettle began to whistle indicating the water inside had boiled. Ed snapped out of his stupor and quickly removed the kettle from heat. He poured the water into his cup, then went to the bookcase picking out one of Roy's many alchemy books.
He returned to his nest on the couch and read while sipping on his tea slowly dissipating the nauseas feeling in the pit of his stomach. Once the cup had been emptied of its contents. Ed set it down on the coffee table and focused on the book in front of him. Hours slipped by and he read on. He didn't even notice when the sun began to rise and the sky was streaked with pink and orange.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
When Roy woke up and realized Ed wasn't in bed next to him he figured it only meant that he was in the bathroom with his head down the toilet bowl… He looked down the hall to see the bathroom lights off and the door wide open. He walked out into the living room and saw Ed sitting reading with his head propped up on his hand.
Roy leaned down checking to see if he was awake, Ed turned his head to meet his gaze, "Ed, have you been up all night?"
Ed sat up a bit and looked out the window, "Oh… I guess I have…"
Roy's eyes widened, "You can't be so nonchalant about it Edward…" The blonde looked up at the dark haired man, eyes unfocussed from a night of reading. "It's not healthy, especially with you being sick all day…"
Ed blinked slowly, "I couldn't sleep."
Roy pinched the bridge of his nose, "Ed, you're pregnant… How many times do I have to remind you?"
Ed shrugged, "How can I sleep when I'm not tired…"
Roy sighed, "Are you tired now?"
Ed looked up at him, "I guess a little."
"Do you want to go to work?"
"I have to… I don't have any leave… I used it all when I went to Resembool…"
"Well maybe you shouldn't have gone…"
Ed rolled his eyes, "Well it's not like I knew I was going to be pregnant…"
Roy shut his mouth, he had a point, "I guess now might be a good time to tell you that while you were gone for two of the weeks out of each month I put you down for 'absence due to superior order' So… your leave isn't actually all used up. You have a month's worth…and should probably work on saving it so when you start to show you can stay home…"
Ed's eyes widened with surprise, "Thank you… why'd you do that?"
Roy shrugged, "You didn't tell me why you left… I guess I was worried… so to be on the safe side… in case you needed time to recuperate I saved you some leave"
Ed closed his book and stood up from the couch, "I think I'll go to work anyways…"
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Roy pulled into the parking lot and shut the car off. He opened the door, Ed just sat there… "Ed?" He grabbed his chin and pulled his face so he was looking at him… Just as he thought, Ed was dead asleep. He sighed and went to grab Ed, but as soon as he'd touched him he woke up. He looked outside, "Oh we're here…" He got up as though he hadn't been asleep at all… Roy followed behind him into the building.
"Ed, come to my office when the day is over…"
Ed nodded in response before turning and heading in the opposite direction of Roy. He hurriedly rushed to the library to do some reading… and maybe some napping. In his frenzied state, he bumped into several people, one of them being Hughes. Ed sat on the floor in the library between bookcases. He laid down and held a book over his head so he could read it. Within minutes the blonde man was sleeping again.
Hughes' curiosity had gotten the best of him… He'd seen Ed go into the library and he wanted to know what he was up to now. He pulled open the heavy door and walked around the seemingly deserted library, then he spotted him, "Hey, Ed…" no movement or response. Hughes kneeled down next to him and lifted the book off of his face.
Ed's eyes were closed, but his face was twisted into a look of pain and discomfort. He was sweating quite a bit. His skin was pale and he had dark bags under his eyes. Hughes picked Ed up and carried him bridal style back to his office where he put him on the couch to rest. Hughes reached for the phone.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Roy's phone was ringing, it's like nobody around here wanted him to get work done… they were always interrupting him. He picked it up and rumbled in his deep voice, "Colonel Mustang." Hughes sounded a bit frantic on the other line. Roy sighed, "I can't understand you."
Hughes sighed, "It's Ed… he's sleeping in my office."
Roy sighed, "I'm sorry you can bring him here to my-"
Hughes interrupted, "He's sleeping in my office with a fever and the chills…" Roy hung up the phone and then went straight to Hughes office.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"He was up all night reading… He insisted he come into work…"
"Reading?"
Roy shrugged and looked at Hughes, "You know Ed… he said he wasn't tired… it's finally catching up to him. Truthfully I don't think he was feeling good then either."
Hughes went to the other side of the room and locked the door, "So what are you guys gonna do…?" His voice was very quiet… hardly audible.
Roy looked back at the sleeping Edward, "Well… we want to stay together… we both want a family." Roy's voice was just as soft and quiet.
Hughes followed Roy's eyes towards Ed, "Does he know… about… Oliver… and Tichs…?"
Roy nodded, "I told him last night… He was compliant of course… after all… it's more than just his and my skin on the line now…"
Hughes sat down in his chair, and watched Roy hovering over Ed, "You're going to have to watch him like a hawk… The kid is so selfless… No telling what kind of trouble he'll get into…"
Roy nodded agreeing, He placed the back of his hand against Ed's forehead… "I think he's getting worse…" Then there was a loud thump and a small audible "Oww" From the other side of the door.
Roy unlocked it and then opened it only to find Oliver standing there rubbing his forehead, "I ran into the door… Why was it locked anyways?!" He said while giving Roy a big hug "Hey Hughes!" Oliver smiled and gave a little wave… they hadn't seen each other for ages. "It's nice to finally see you guys again… and not just hear you…"
Roy nodded in agreement, "Oliver… I hate to ask this right off the bat… but could you take a look at Ed?"
He nodded, "Of course… where is he?" Roy moved to reveal the sick Ed.
"Oh my… how long has he been like this?" Oliver took his glasses out of his pocket and slid them onto his face.
Hughes stood up, "I found him like that earlier this morning."
Roy butted in, "But I think he started feeling sick last night…" He moved to lock the door once again.
Oliver knelt down next to Ed, and brushed his wet bangs off of his now sticky forehead… "Woah… yikes… That's some crazy fever…" He said quietly, mostly to Ed… "Don't worry, you and baby will feel better soon…"
Suddenly Ed began to move. He groaned and Oliver saw his eyes open slightly, "Do you still get to see Louis?" Ed passed out again. Oliver's eyes widened and he sat there in silence eyes wide with horror. He stood up and cleared his throat. "I need peppermint, yarrow and Elderberry" he said looking around the room… He spotted some plants in the corner. Oliver went and ripped off a bunch of the leaves. He sat down on the floor and transmuted the leaves into the herbs he needed.
He grabbed a large chunk of marble from one of his coat pockets and transmuted it into a mortar and pestle. He ground the herbs and then placed the bowl upside-down on the transmutation circle. The whole room flashed green quickly. The marble had returned to a big chunk, which he put back in his pocket. He scooped the herbs up in his hands. Oliver looked at Roy… "You need to put some of this under his tongue." Roy took a pinch, "More than that…" He grabbed another pinch, "More…" He took a much larger pinch this time, "There you go… now, directly under his tongue…"
Roy stared nervously at the sleeping Edward, before he carefully pulled his lips apart with his thumb. He gently placed the herbs under Ed's tongue. They began to make a fizzling noise and smoke rose from Ed's mouth, "Uh… Oliver?" Roy said sounding a bit scared.
"It's supposed to do that…" He said smiling, "Don't be so paranoid Roy… you still trust me right…?" Roy nodded, "Then when I say he's going to be fine, you believe me?" Roy nodded again, his eyes glued to Ed's face. Oliver smiled, "Good… Oh and this reminds me… we need to set up appointments… I want to check on Ed at regular intervals… since he's not a woman and he doesn't have the normal bodily functions… I'm going to check on him three times a trimester"
Roy nodded, "I'm not too sure he'll be happy about that…"
"Well. It's non-debatable."
There was a loud voice that came over the intercom "Dr. Oliver Cooper, report to the testing grounds for your assessment."
He stood up, "Well see you guys later… Roy mind if I stop by tonight to check on him again?
Roy shook his head, "It's fine with me" Oliver waved goodbye to Hughes and Roy before dodging out of the office.
Hughes chuckled, "He really hasn't changed has he?"
Roy shook his head, "No he hasn't."
