Chapter 16
They sat in the doctor's office. Ed was practically in tears and Roy tried to remain strong for him, even though he was worried sick. He held tightly to Ed's hand, squeezing ever so slightly.
The doctor re-entered the office, "Good news! The baby is fine…" he said while slipping a pair of large round spectacles onto his face, examining Ed's chart.
Ed's tears spilled down his face as he sobbed uncontrollably. He wrapped his arms around Roy in a tight hug, gasping with relief.
Roy rubbed his back gently, and kissed his neck. Ed hid his face in Roy's chest, too relieved to say anything.
The doctor cleared his throat, "the bruising is normal after the beating you took from that hike so that's natural. However, your body was—is under a lot of stress, messing with you physiologically. Your blood pressure has risen, which isn't good for mom or a developing fetus. I need you to promise, that you'll take it easy, or else I'll have to prescribe you something…"
Ed nodded his head, "I-I can do that…"
"Doctor, what exactly does that entail?" Roy asked.
"Well, no excessive movement, he'll need to be on bedrest, he can't stress himself out—"
"I think we'd better get a prescription of those pills…"
Ed glared at Roy and the doctor glanced between the two of them, terrified. "You know," The doctor paused, "I'm gonna go get that prescription…" The air was thick with tension. The doctor eagerly slipped out of the room to go get the pills they needed.
Ed crossed his arms over his chest and avoided Roy's gaze.
"Ed…" He started.
"Don't talk to me… I'm supposed to avoid stress, right?" he huffed angrily.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
They pulled into the driveway of their house. Roy parked the car and pulled the keys out of the ignition, the engine died. He sighed, "Ed…"
His blonde husband hurriedly pushed opened the car door and went inside, completely ignoring Roy.
Roy headed into the house after him, as he stepped over the threshold their bedroom door slammed shut.
Hughes sat on the couch, Milo crawled all over him, like a jungle gym.
"Daddddheeee!" Milo squealed excitedly, going limp in Hughes arms. His head dropped back so he could stare at his father.
"How'd it go? Does he still hav-"
"He didn't lose the baby." Roy interjected, "Thanks for watching them while we were out… that environment… it's not for kids y'know…?" He tousled Milo's hair then stooped down to where Ollie and Lulu laid. He placed kisses on each of their foreheads.
"Well… did you want to talk about it?" Hughes asked, pulling Milo off his lap.
"I think I'd better talk to Ed… would you mind hanging out here for a few more minutes?"
"Of course not… I love watching these little guys…"
Roy smiled, straightening up. He headed for the stairs.
Elicia (She's about 8, btw) was walking down the stairs carrying an abundance of toys from Milo's room. "Hello, Mister Colonel Mustang sir…" She said with a smile.
"Hi, Elicia…" He replied distractedly. He continued up the stairs, two at a time. He opened the door to his and Ed's room.
"Get out!" Ed yelled. He was sitting on the bed crying.
Roy entered the room, closing the door behind him, "Ed." He said sitting down beside his husband.
Ed shook his head, tears dripped down his face.
"I know you're upset with me… but I just want you to hear me out…" He reached for Ed, his fingers barely grazed Ed's belly and in response the blonde smacked his hand away.
Ed's eyes were wide with terror, "Don't touch me!"
"Listen to me Edward…" Roy started again. "If you think the reason I asked for the prescription is because I doubt your capability to keep this child safe and healthy, then you're wrong."
Ed sniffled rubbing his eyes. He looked at Roy, waiting to hear the rest of his explanation.
"I did it because…" He stopped, looking at Ed. His gaze was fixed on him, as he listened intently.
"What?" Ed asked, still sniffling.
"I don't want to scare you…"
"Just tell me…"
Roy sighed, "High blood pressure can lead to something called preeclampsia. When you're farther along it can damage your organs and even cause them to fail in some cases… you could di-" Ed's hand clamped over Roy's mouth.
He shook his head, "Don't say it…"
Roy reached for Ed's hand, "I don't want to lose you Ed… and if there is anything I can do to prevent that, I'm going to take that extra step…" His thumb gently stroked the back of Ed's hand.
Ed sat silently, now he was scared, terrified actually. Hesitantly, he placed his hand on the side of Roy's face. His husband nuzzled into the touch. "I'm sorry I smacked you…"
"Just my hand…"
"Still… I lost my temper… I shouldn't have." He paused. Tears welled in his eyes, "I'm sorry…"
"For what?" Roy asked, smiling, kissing the palm of Ed's hand.
"C-crying…" Ed said through sobs. "Everything makes me so emotional…"
Roy only chuckled, "it's okay…" he wrapped his arms around Ed in a tight hug.
"I want one of those pills…" He said, gazing up at Roy.
"M'kay." Roy said, a chuckle escaped his throat. He leaned down and kissed Ed softly. He stood up and gently pulled Ed off of the bed. They headed downstairs. Milo and Elicia lay on the floor, playing with Lulu and Ollie.
"Mommeee! Daddeee!" Milo squealed excitedly. He got up and ran to the staircase, wrapping his arms around his mother's legs. "Be'er Mommy?"
Ed nodded patting Milo's head, he kneeled down, eyelevel with his son. "I'm better… Milo, do you think you can go tell Uncle Hughes thank you for watching and taking care of you?"
Milo smiled sheepishly at his mother and father.
"Go on…" Roy urged him.
Milo turned and shyly wandered closer to where Hughes sat, "'ank ooo…"
"No, thank you. I had fun playing with you today…." Hughes said with a smile. He ruffled the boy's curls. "Elicia…" Hughes said, "It's time to go… say goodbye…"
She stood up and hugged Milo good bye "Bye-bye Milo, next time we'll play at my house..." She turned to face Ed and Roy, "goodbye Mr. Mustang, goodbye, Colonel… sir…" She said.
Ed smiled, "Bye Elicia, thank you for helping your daddy today…" She smiled and nodded at Ed, before chasing after her father. She grabbed his hand and waved goodbye as she was led out the door.
"What a cutie…" Ed said with a smile. Roy went to the kitchen to find where he'd placed the prescription bottle. Ed sat down beside the girls and Milo.
When Roy finally found the bottle, he returned to the living room, "Hey Ed… it says to drink something with it… do you want water or milk?"
Ed sniffled, "M-milk…"
"Huh?" Roy sat down beside Ed, in front of their daughters, "Ed are you alright?" Roy gently squeezed his shoulder.
Ed nodded. He covered his mouth and nose with his hand.
"Why are you crying?" Roy asked.
Ed shook his head and bit his lip. He took a shaky breath, "I was just thinking…." He was trying to keep himself from crying again, "…thinking about when the girls will be that big…"
"Oh Ed… don't worry yourself over that… when they're eight, I'm sure we'll have other babies around the house…"
Ed nodded, "I know…" He sniffled, "But they're our little girls…." He whimpered and tears fell down his face again.
Roy couldn't help but chuckle at his overly emotional beloved. "I'm gonna get you that milk…" He said, placing a kiss on Ed's temple.
Ed nodded, staring at his girls. Milo toddled closer to his mother, "Mommeeee?" He cooed.
"Huh?" Ed turned to face his son. Milo had his sleeve pulled over his hand, and he tried to be gentle and wipe the tears off his mother's face, as he had done for him so many times before.
Ed started to laugh, he grabbed Milo's arm and pulled him into his lap, showering his son with kisses. Milo giggled in hysterics. "Thank you sweetie…" Ed said with a smile as he set his son back on his feet.
Still slightly giggling Milo wandered off to go and find a toy he wanted to play with.
Roy returned from the kitchen holding a glass of milk and two small pills. "Better now?" Roy asked, examining Ed's face.
Ed nodded and held out his hands. He took the glass in one hand, Roy dropped the pills into his other. He took the pills quickly, washing them down with milk.
Oliver started to fuss where she laid on the floor. Her forehead was pressed to the floor. She couldn't lift her head anymore. Ed picked her up and cradled her in his arms.
"Hi baby…" Ed said smiling at her. She gurgled excitedly and blew spit bubbles down her chin.
Milo stood behind his mother. He tugged on the sleeve of Ed's shirt, "Mommy, I err baby…"
"Yes, you're my baby too, Milo." Ed said with a smile.
"Noooh!" He hooted, " 'us Milo!"
"It can't be just Milo, 'cause you're not my only baby…" Ed said smiling at his son.
The little boy glared down at his sister. He puffed up his cheeks, his face started to turn red with jealously and frustration. "I baby!"
"Yes, Milo you're my baby, but so are Louisa and Oliver…"
"Dadddyyy!" Milo whined.
"What?" Roy asked with a smirk.
"I baby…"
Roy nodded, "You're a baby."
"or baby!"
"Yes, you're one of my babies…" Roy said with a smile.
That answer didn't satisfy Milo. "oh-ly baby!" he stomped his foot in anger."
"Milo…." Roy said drawing out his name as a warning.
The curly headed boy huffed, angered. "Dahdd-"
There was a knock on the door… Ed was about to get up to answer it, but he was too sore, Roy saw this, he gently pushed him back down. He walked across the room and answered the door. Milo hid behind his legs.
"Oh…" Roy said after opening the door.
A cheery Oliver, and nervous looking Louis stood on their front porch. "Come in… please, it's good to see you guys again…"
They stepped into the house, Ed was stretching his neck, trying to see who it was.
Oliver bent down looking at Milo who cowered behind Roy, "Hi hon. Look at how big you're getting…" Oliver ruffled his hair affectionately.
"Hello?" Ed called from where he sat.
Oliver went around the other side of the couch, seeing Ed seated on the floor, holding one of the girls. He wrapped his arms around Ed's neck in a hug.
"How are you doing Ed? Enjoying the time off from pregnancy?" Oliver asked excitedly
"Oh… well act-"
"Oh lookie! I'm gonna guess this is Lu- no, Ollie, this is definitely Ollie."
Ed smiled, "you nailed it…"
Oliver cooed to Ollie, then took notice of little Lulu. He picked her up and held her closely. "Oh, they're all just so precious…"
Ed smiled and nodded, "Most of the time… most of the time they're precious…."
"So what brings the two of you here?" Roy asked
"Well, it's time for the girls' check-up… and we've got some… business to discuss with the two of you." Louis said, he hung up his coat. "We were already in town, so we figured we'd stop by…"
Oliver took Lulu and sat down on the couch. Louis sat beside him, cooing sweetly at the baby girl who was his namesake.
Ed made a move to stand up, Roy was by his side within seconds, "here… Ed, careful… if it hurts then don't push yourself alright…?" he said, helping Ed up by his arm.
Ed nodded and sat down on the adjacent couch with Ollie in his lap. Roy sat down beside him, Milo jumped in his lap excitedly. Roy grunted at the impact, and his son looked up at him with sheepish gold orbs. Ollie babbled contently, glancing between her parents, watching.
"So… what is it that you wanted to talk about…?" Roy asked, maneuvering Milo into a more comfortable position.
Oliver glanced up at Louis, they were silent for a few seconds, just looking at each other, as if having a conversation.
"So…" Oliver cleared his throat. A blush spread across his face… "I… We-" Louis rubbed his shoulder reassuringly. Oliver took a deep breath, "I guess it'd be easier if I started from the beginning…"
Ed and Roy listened intently, rather confused. Louis, pulled Louisa into his lap and cooed to her lovingly. He tickled her neck, ever so slightly, making the little girl giggle.
Oliver took another deep breath, "We… erm- that is Louis and I, we've been talking it over for a long time… we have all the necessary arrangements- We worked for months…"
Ed and Roy were lost, in this conversation. They stared at their friends incredulously, unsure of what the small doctor was talking about.
Louis must've seen this. He rested his hand on Oliver's thigh, the smaller man, trembled and stopped talking. A blush spread across his face.
"We would like to have a baby…" Louis said, he smiled, holding Lulu in the crook of his arm. She gurgled up at him contently. With his free hand, he gently rubbed Oliver's leg.
"Oh! Congratulations you guys!" Ed said cheerily. He adjusted his hold on Oliver. "Where have you been looking to adopt?"
Both of them blushed nervously and glanced at each other, then looked back at Ed and Roy, "That's… what we needed to talk to you about…"
Ollie started to fuss in Ed's arms. He rocked her gently, trying to shush her, which didn't work. Roy gently pulled her from Ed's arms. He cooed to her trying to calm her down, which also didn't work. He looked at Ed, "I'm going to put her down for a nap…" Milo scurried off his father's lap.
"Oh… Roy, you'd better take Louisa too… I don't want their sleeping schedules out of sync… If that happens, we won't be sleeping for a long time…"
Roy, still holding a screaming Ollie, walked to where Louis and Oliver sat. Louis held Lulu out to him, and Roy took her in his other arm. He headed upstairs to put them to bed.
Milo crawled onto his Mommy's lap. Ed absently wrapped his arms around his little boy's waist. "So what was it you were saying?" Ed asked sitting up.
"Well," Louis started, "We've been working on creating an egg from one of Oliver's sperm cells." Oliver blushed beside Louis, hiding his face in his hands. "And… we need a surrogate… so that's where you come in…"
Ed was silent in shock. Tears pooled in his eyes, he shook his head, "Oh… I'm so sorry…" Milo looked up at his mother,
"Mahma?" He reached a hand up, touching Ed's cheek.
Ed sniffled, "I'm already pregnant…"
Louis and Oliver smiled slightly, "Oh Ed, congratulations…"
"I want to be your surrogate…"
"Don't beat yourself up over it… we can wait…" Louis said with a smile.
"Y'know… I'm sure you could ask Winry…" Ed said.
"Well, y'see she's… pregnant too…" Oliver said rubbing his neck.
"What? She and Al never told me…"
"Well she's not very far along right now… maybe she was waiting…" Oliver said.
"So you already asked her?" Ed inquired, wiping at his tears.
"Well, no. You're who we wanted to carry our baby…" Louis said.
Ed let the information sink in and he began to cry again. Tears fell down his face, landing on Milo's head.
"Ed are you alright?" Oliver asked.
He nodded, "It's just… it's so sweet of you…"
The door to the nursery opened then closed again. Everyone gazed up at Roy.
"What's- Ed are you alright?"
Ed nodded, sniffling, "I'm so sorry..." He repeated
"Doh cry Mahma" Milo said, getting to his feet. He kissed Ed on either cheek, smiling.
"Oh, you're such a thoughtful boy Milo…" Ed wrapped his arms around his son in a hug.
Roy descended the stairs and took a seat next to his husband and son on the couch. He gently massaged the back of Ed's neck. "He's been a bit emotional lately…"
Ed nodded in agreement, "I'm a mess." He dropped his head in his hands, sobbing softly.
"Maybe… you should go rest Ed…" Roy cautiously suggested
"No!" his head shot up in protest.
"We got back two days ago… the doctor recommended bed-rest…"
"Doctor? What doctor? Why'd you go to the doctors?" Oliver asked.
"It's a long story…" Roy sighed.
Oliver crossed his legs and arms, "We've got time…"
Louis nudged him, "Maybe they don't want to tell us…"
"Hmm." Oliver huffed, "I'm Ed's doctor I have a right to know… besides… I don't trust the other doctor's judgement."
"You don't even know who they are…" Louis said with a chuckle.
Oliver shot him a glare, "The only doctor's judgment whom I trust undoubtedly, is my own." He stood up, "Ed… what happened? What did that other doctor tell you?"
Ed lifted his head, wiping his eyes, "I'm at risk for high blood pressure… I need to avoid stress… otherwise it could cause problems later on in my pregnancy…"
"Mmm… Toxemia (another name for preeclampsia)…" he ruffled Milo's hair. Then focused on Ed once more, "What happened that caused you to go to the doctors…?"
"I was following a lead…" Ed replied. "We went to a hot springs in the mountain… I hiked to a cave and then—"
"A cave? Did it have alchemic inscriptions on the wall?"
"Uhh…. Yeah…"
"Did they glow?"
"N-no…" Ed responded, confused.
Oliver's face paled. "Take off your shirt…"
Ed struggled to put Milo in Roy's lap, he peeled off his shirt.
Oliver gasped, "Goodness, the alchemy really did a number on you…" He grabbed Ed's wrist and pulled his arm out, examining it. He prodded one of the bruises, "Does this hurt?"
Ed shook his head.
"Good… good." Oliver said with a sigh of relief. His shoulders slouched as he relaxed.
"Do you care to explain what you're talking about…?" Ed asked, confused.
"I've been to the cave you're talking about... I've studied those transmutation circles… most of them are traps… or at least, I don't see what other use they would have… I'd looked at them so many times…" He paused, "Can you remember the one you touched?"
"Yeah…"
"Can you draw it for me…?" Oliver asked.
"He's fine… right?" Roy asked, holding Milo close in his lap.
Oliver nodded his head, "I believe… I'll be able to tell after I see the transmutation circle."
"Hold on…" Ed said. He pulled his shirt back on and got up and went to the bookshelves, he pulled out a large sketch book and went and sat on the couch.
He began to flip through pages, Oliver and Roy stared as drawings went by. There were lots of different transmutation circles, then after maybe sixty pages there were a lot of sketches of Milo. Ed blushed furiously, as he tried to flip the pages hurriedly. Then were lots of drawings of Lulu and Ollie.
"Don't look…" Ed whined, trying to shield the pages as he turned them.
"Those are quite good though," Roy said encouragingly.
"Th-thanks…" Ed grumbled. He flipped through more circles and alchemic symbols, "here… this one… it's this one…" He flipped the book and gave it to Oliver.
Oliver pulled his glasses out of his pocket and slid them onto his face. He stared at the circle for a long time. "You said that they weren't glowing when you got there?"
Ed nodded, "Why would they be glowing…?"
"Well… the cave has a sort of defense mechanism… The person who carved the cave, put some sort of timer… I wasn't able to figure out how it works, but after a certain point in the day if anyone enters they'll be, harmed by the effects of the transmutation circle… You must've gotten there in time, but when you touched the transmutation circle you automatically set it off… obviously…"
Oliver looked back down at the sketch in his lap, he traced his fingers over the lines, as if drawing it himself. "The lines are thick… it's reinforced…" he pointed to various symbols… "terra… heva… flame…"
Oliver kept looking at the symbols along the circle, "So… fertility, soul, and purification…"
Louis stood up and hovered behind Oliver, looking at the circle, "don't be so naïve, it was set up as a trap, terra could also mean life manipulation and flame could be destruction…"
"Do you think it'll have any effects on the baby?" Ed asked tearfully
Roy squeezed his shoulder gently, "the baby's gonna be fine Ed"
Oliver looked up at Louis, "What else do you see Louis?"
Louis leaned closer, using his finger he pointed, "That… square in the center stands for unity, yet it touches the edges of the inner circle, breaking the unity… perhaps that's why… Ed is fine… because it was drawn wrongly…"
Oliver shook his head, "That doesn't make sense the person who made this studied alchemy their entire life…"
"Right, and perhaps this one of the first circles they had drawn… Ed where was this circle located…?"
"On the wall… near the floor…" Ed answered.
"Seems like it'd be an earlier drawing… I mean, logically I'd start on the ground and then work my way up…"
Oliver handed the book back to Ed, "Well, if it didn't work that can explain why the outcome was so… seemingly… random… Ed you should be fine, you and the baby… but I want to give you a check-up, just to be safe."
Ed nodded and Oliver watched him expectantly.
"You mean right now?"
Oliver nodded, "Yes right now… might as well until the girls wake up… they need checkups too."
Ed pulled off his shirt once again, and Oliver went to fetch the bag with his equipment in it, which he had left near the front door.
"Dahdee… 'at Mommy do'g?"
"Uncle Oliver is going to give him a checkup, to make sure that he'll be okay, and that the baby is okay…"
"I ohkaaay!"
"Not you baby, the other baby that's not here yet… but we're glad you're okay too…" Roy said, kissing the top of his son's head.
Oliver came back, sitting on the coffee table and setting his bag down beside him. "Okay Ed, lay down…"
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Oliver packed up his things, "Well, everyone is fine… The girls are healthy, and right on track with their age milestones…" He tousled Ollie's hair. "And Ed, you and little baby Mustang are going to be just fine… Did either of you have any concerns?" He glanced between Roy and Ed.
"Do I have to stay on bedrest?" Ed asked, sounding deflated.
"Nope. You'll be just fine continuing throughout your day… just try to keep a level head and avoid stress, alright…?" Oliver said with a smile. "And, you should continue to take the medicine the other doctor prescribed you…"
Ed nodded, "Got it" he said, bouncing Lulu on his leg.
Louis wrapped an arm around Oliver's shoulders, "Well we best be heading out now… our train leaves in a few hours and we still have more errands to run…"
Roy stood up, holding onto Ollie, his arm curled around her small torso. He walked them to the door, "Thanks for stopping by you guys…"
"Sorry we didn't give you guys any notice…" Oliver replied, slipping his arms into his jacket.
Louis opened the front door.
"Oh, it's fine, you're always welcome here…" Roy said.
Ed shot up, "Hey! I want to be your surrogate, so don't go and find someone else, alright?!"
Oliver smiled, "We wouldn't dare…"
Louis waved his last goodbye and closed the door behind him.
"What was that all about…?"
"What?" Ed asked innocently.
"They're going to adopt… I thought…"
Ed shook his head, "Apparently they turned one of Oliver's sperm cells into an egg… I'm guessing they used the cell membrane…" he trailed off, "Anyways, they want me to be the surrogate."
"And you're gonna do it?" Roy asked, plopping down beside Ed on the couch.
"Yeah… I mean… they deserve that happiness and if I can help bring that to them… then I want to try…"
"Mmm…" Roy replied.
"What?" Ed asked, "You don't think it's a good idea?"
Roy shook his head, "No, I didn't say that, I just worry I mean you know how you get when you're pregnant…"
"What do you mean 'how I get'?" Ed's brow furrowed
"You worry… and you get super paranoid…"
"Well good thing it's a long way off then…" Ed said with a scowl.
"Hey don't get mad… I'm just making an observation…"
Ed took a deep breath, then sighed Lulu turned her head to look at her mother, she reached for Ed's face. He smiled and bit her fingers playfully then pretended to chew, eliciting a giggle from his dark haired daughter. He smiled at her.
Milo stood on the floor in front of his parents. He stared at his mother and sister intently.
"Oh, my little baby Lulu!" Ed said, kissing her face.
"Mommeee!"
"What baby?" Ed asked, looking at him
"Hung… hungey…"
"You want some dinner?" Ed asked. He stood up, adjusting his hold on Louisa.
"Mommy! Up! Up!" Milo stretched his arms up above his head, "Up!"
"I've got your sister right now…"
"No" he whimpered.
"Sweetheart… you can't be jealous of your sisters…" Ed said, running his fingers through Milo's curls.
"I Naah!"
Ed chuckled and looked at Roy who smiled adoringly at their son.
"Here… give me Lulu… you take Milo…" Ed kissed Lulu's forehead before placing her in Roy's lap.
Ed then scooped up Milo in his arms, peppering his face, arms and torso with kisses, "So you want mommy's attention huh?" Ed tickled his sides.
Milo giggled and squirmed as he gasped for breath.
Ed took him to the kitchen and put him in his highchair.
"What do you want to eat baby?" He asked, running his fingers through Milo's hair and kissing him on the forehead.
"Mm… I wan… chee!"
"You can't have cheese for dinner, Milo…" Ed opened the fridge rifling through, looking for food his son would actually ingest. "How about some yogurt?"
"Yo-t! Mahma! Yo-ut!"
Ed pulled out the yogurt and spooned it into a bowl for him. He grabbed a small rubber ended spoon and placed the bowl and utensil in front of Milo. His son examined the contents before him.
"Nah dis kin Mommeee!" Milo whined.
"That's the only kind we have Milo… besides I thought you liked vanilla."
The little boy shook his head, dark curls rustling.
Ed sighed, "I can cut up some bananas for you…"
Milo hooted excitedly, "Da Mommy Da!"
"Okay…" Ed peeled and cut up a banana. He placed it on the tray of the highchair.
Milo eyed them unsurely, "I don' wan' 'ih mahma…" Milo whimpered.
Ed sighed, rubbing his temples, "Why did you say you wanted it then?"
Roy appeared in the kitchen holding the girls, "Milo are you giving mommy a hard time?"
"Noooh." He said sheepishly.
"Yes…" Ed said. He took Oliver from Roy's arms. She smiled happily at her mother, gurgling.
"Well, Milo, you told your mother you would eat that food… so you'd better eat it…"
Milo shook his head.
"Fine. We'll just put you to bed then."
"No!" He screeched. He dipped his fingers in the yoghurt and then sucked it off his finger.
Ed sighed, "Thank you… he's been difficult today…"
Roy nodded in agreement, he kneeled down beside Milo, just enough so he was eye-level. "Milo… you shouldn't feel possessive towards us… we love you just as much as your sisters… it's just they're too little to do anything right now, so it's up to me and Mommy to take care of them… do you think you could help?"
Milo turned to meet his father's gaze. His round gold orbs shone with intelligence. "Think you can be a good big brother to your sisters and help me and Mommy?"
A smile spread across Milo's face, "I goo 'ig buth-errr…"
"You are a good big brother…" Ed said, beaming at his son, "Now sweetie, eat the rest of your dinner and then it'll be bath time…" He patted Ollie's back gently.
