Charlote and Tom -Chapter 14
She thought Charlote and Tom lived in the next town over, but her father threatened to arrest Tom and tie Charlote up, so she had to stay away. After the courtship where Julie played around and did everything bad to Tom, as well as running over a child and blaming it on Tom, her father wanted even more revenge. Julie was everything, beautiful, educated, but she was snobbish, did the wrong things and always blamed someone else. As she said, everyone protects me because I'm beautiful and rich.
On a nearby farm, Charlote and Tom opened Bill's telegram...
URGENT
YOUR DAUGHTER ELIZABETH AND OF CHARLES ARE FLEEING NORTH. THEY THREATENED US ALL SHE TRIED TO PROTECT THEM. BILL
Charlote and Tom looked at each other, for years they had let Lizzie down, ever since her relationship with Lucas began and she asked them to disappear after all Jack died and we were done here. It was a big disappointment and so they drifted apart. Tom always found it strange that she was the first to defend him, whenever Julie got into trouble and he took the blame, and when he was about to be arrested, she testified that her sister had stolen their father's car several times. And to this day I still don't know who that policeman was who defended him and why. Charlote and Tom grabbed their guns and bags, mounted their horses and headed for the border town, because if she came by car, train or carriage she would have to pass through there. She might not be all right, but if Bill was looking for her even though he'd had a fight with her and had sent a telegram, then there was more to the story. As they walked through the night, Tom was talking to his mother: what if, but if we had helped her, maybe she and little Jack wouldn't be so far from danger?
- My son, did she leave us to date that bar owner? Do you remember that?
There was silence for hours during this walk...
Wynn had been galloping for days, he had to get to the city of Yukon, a frontier town, where everything reached Nunavut in about two hours. His son Frankison was already on his way too, he should have been in or near Yukon by now. They knew that Elizabeth was trying to reach a region called Alert in Nunavut, she had made him a detailed and elaborate map that only the eyes of his teacher wife could understand. She would not let Willian Thatcher harm that girl and her son.
Rosemary and Abigail now looked at Alien who had arrived on the afternoon stage just as Charles was leaving, she saw his screams and was totally freaked out by the kind of stalker he was. Today, after reading the letter from Elizabeth, her beloved teacher who had broken her heart two years ago, she began to hear stories here and there and realized that she was afraid that someone was going to hurt them. Rosemary and Abigail couldn't stop crying at every memory of her and her son's disappearance. Alien thought about her pain and Elizabeth's and that's how she met Fiona and learned that she was Lucas's wife, that the relationship was a lie to keep everyone away and protected and that Fiona knew a lot about Alien because Elizabeth spoke a lot about her and always with a lot of pride and affection.
It was only now, under a shower of tears and hugs from Opall, that Alien saw how much pain his beautiful teacher had been going through for years and that we had all abandoned her.
The horses came down by train, along with the cars, while the men rested in a three-room suite. There were snacks on the table for everyone who was exhausted and couldn't tell how a woman with a child who had been gone for more than a week managed to escape and cover her tracks.
At that moment Nathan arrived, now clean and with wet hair, with a piece of paper in his hand he said:
- Look at this...
the map Lucas gave me, which looked like a drawing Jack made, Elizabeth made it, it was starting to make sense. Looking at the clues, it clearly said, basically, where she was going and where to go. And so everyone shouted:
- Alert in Nunavut
Dumbfounded, Ned said:
- How did this woman make a map like that and how can she walk more than halfway across the country with a child, on the run and no money?
Look, Lee has been showing us, she's more than four hours ahead of us going to her destiny knowing that she's strong, determined, nothing and no one is going to stop this girl from her decisions. She's going to do what she thinks needs to be done to save herself, her son or us.
- It's a good thing we're moving quickly by train, Lee. We'll get close to her, and then we'll protect her as far as she wants to go, Nathan said sadly, because he knew she would go with this uncle.
- But so far: Gab said: I don't understand how she left and we haven't seen her leave those other towns, where she went after leaving Jonhan, because there was no stage and she disappeared.
- Well I think I know, said Frank the pastor, I was in the gang for many years and so were you Jesse, we always ran away and often no one caught us, well until Jack Thorton showed up ... and everyone laughed when they saw Frank's face. To this day I thank God and a lot, because he was young on his second day on the force, but he did the right thing and even gave me his bible when he arrested me, I paid for my crime and became a pastor. But think back, do you remember in the distance when we saw two old men with garbage carts, well if they were practically empty, why did they go to the next town and why were they so heavy? Remember we stopped them and asked about a woman and a child. Ned and I questioned them before you arrived, but they said they knew nothing, but look with so many eyes in that town how it came out, that's all no one saw.
