Small chapter! Little break for everyone! The next chapter is way longer! I missed just having them chatting, so I wanted to do that before getting to the next attraction! Hope you enjoy! The main idea of this chapter is for them to think ahead for a little bit. About their future. Lum's future is obvious to her, but less for Ataru.
Our couple, after paying up everything in the cafe were back in the park. They were supposed to find the next attraction, but it seem like neithet of them were in a rush.
Still in the café, the pair were dealing with the aftermath of their little meeting with Shinobu. Ataru nearly fainted when he saw the price of Miyake's rampage. "Why did I even propose to pay for the table?" he thought. Whatever his reasoning was, it was too late. Lum happily paid for the drinks and ice cream, and Ataru begrudgingly paid for the table.
She quickly grabbed his hand back as they exited. They were out, back in the middle of the plaza. There were still tons of people strolling around, lots of families, and kids running next to them. Some children even pointed at their hairbands, asking what they were. The hairbands did kind of look like something kids would buy after all. Lum knelt down, crouching to meet their eyes.
"It's a hairband for lovers!" Lum explained tilting her heand and smiling. She really loved saying that. She placed her head down so the little girl could touch it, it made both really happy.
Ataru knew better than to scream at a kid when their parents were so close to them. He simply turned his head, looking away to disconnect himself from the small chat. Before the kid could ask too much question, her father stepped in and apologized to the couple. Lum was happy to chat so she didn't mind at all. She quickly resumed her position as she grabbed Ataru's hand after waving goodbye to the child.
"Kids are cute, aren't they, Ataru?" She had her eyes closed as her smile didn't falter
"They're annoying brats." His tone was kind of harsh. Maybe he though about Jariten too much since Lum was the one saying that.
"Not all of them!" She kept optimistic. "Don't you want kid for yourself one day?" She forced an innocent tone while asking that, but she was obviously really interested in his answer.
Ataru instantly looked away, the answer had always been simple in his mind, but with her around somehow it was foggy. "Why are you even asking me that?"
"It's important for couples to better understand each other! It's our second date after all, I need to know more about your psyche, Ataru!" She gave him another innocent smile.
She's taking advantage of that 'game'. He smirked, maybe he could push her to her limits. "Ah, sure." He thought for a second, looking up "Well, I'd like kids in the future..."
"You do?!" She beamed. He was finally opening up to her!
"Yes, at least 10 kids." He chuckled to himself for a second looking away, and returning back to his thinking postion "Maybe 15."
"Fifteen?!" Lum looked at him in awe. But her shock wasn't of terror or anything, she was looking surprisingly excited about this idea. "Really, Ataru?!"
This wasn't the reaction he was expecting, come on, 15 kids. Any normal girls would have laughed at that. But again, this was Lum he was talking to. "Y-yes. At least." He closed his eyes while saying this.
"I'm so happy!"
"You are?" He opened them in an instant, now more shocked than her.
"I didn't know you were so eager to have a big family!" She clung to him, People from the crowd around them couldn't help but overhear or see their antics. "But you'd need a good job to sustain such a family, Ataru! Maybe I should work too. Or I could ask my dad to give you some work!" Her whole body was swaying around out of sheer excitement.
"Lum! I wasn't serious!" He almost fell bad, taking a second to break her the news. "I'm kidding!"
The less he thought about the future the better. Even more so because he don't wanted to imagine a future with her. But the though of a future without her was even worse. He was content just living the moment."Who cares about that anyway?"
She pouted at first. Letting go of his alr and resuming their usual hand holding. "Well I do!" She gave him a reassuring smile. "I want a good husband, a nice house and at least 2 or 3 kids!" She excitingly explained.
Ataru's mind wandered on the idea. The good husband was obviously reffering to him. To his dismay. And the house probably a slightly bigger house than his. He wondered how a life like that would be for him. A peaceful and average life with a loving wife and kids. Lum's happy face flashed, dressed in an average housewife atire, hugging him as he come back home. Not the worst future, I guess. Well it didn't sound as exciting as an harem. His mind wandered further, as the kids disappeared and were replaced by lots of pretty girls. His clothes changing from an average suit to a fancy costume. Now that was a pretty good future! That's what he truly wanted! Something his mind didn't catch on was that one thing didn't change at all. In those two possibilites, Lum kept her place close to him. She was always part of his future.
Ataru shook his head. "That's pretty boring." He teased her, having nothing better to say. Her dream future was dull but it wasn't bad either.
"I don't need anything fancy to be happy!" She kept her hopeful glare as she looked to a random family in front of them. "As long as I'm with you, Ataru, I'm sure my future will be great!" The oni turned again toward him, eyes shining.
This made Ataru blush, as always. The use of 'my future' really made his heart flinch. She was counting on him too. He's supposed to make her happy? To ensure her happy future. Wait a minute. Why would it be MY problem? His mind fought those thoughts. She chose to fall in love with me! It's not my problem, she should know I'm in love with all women! He hyped himself up as best as he could. It kind of worked, his blush vanished, but he wasn't convinced at all. Making her happy, huh. He wouldn't want to make her sad either. He wondered what it meant. What he'd need to do to ensure her hapiness. He didn't finish the thought, but the fact the idea came at all was suprising. He sighted. He was thinking too much.
"Either way, you should think about today from time to time." He shrugged. "Who know what's in for us the future?" He gave quick glare at her. Then looked around, those people sure look happy as a couple.
Not getting what he truly meant, she tilted her hand, bemused. "Well, I can-"
"No space bridging, that's cheating!" He shushed her, placing a finger in front of her mouth.
"No fun!" She huffed. She didn't notice that he remembered the name. He was paying attenion sometimes!
Ataru reminisced about the time she used it, and they went to the future. The one where her dream never happened, far from it. And yet she was ready to use it again. "And even then, it doesn't seem really accurate!" He scoffed.
Lum's glared at him."Huh? What do you mean, Ataru?" She tilted her head in confusion.
"I wouldn't accept my future to end up like that!" He yelled. He DID care about his future after all.
Lum was still a bit confused by what he meant. "You don't seem happy about it." She teased. Of course, her first thought was thet he hated it because it wasn't her.
"How could I? It was a crappy future!" He said, looking ahead of him. He wouldn't dare looking at her. He knew why this future wasn't good. Even if his mind knew it wasn't because Lum wasn't present, his heart couldn't but scream it was her.
"I thought you liked it well enough?" Lum said, looking up. She concentrated all she had to not smile.
"What? Why woukd you assume something stupid like that?"
"You were married to Shinobu." Lum stated, and obvious tone of melancholy in her voice, reminiscing about it. "Had a cute child with her, everything seemed nice." She continued. She knew the future could have changed, but still. It still hurt. "Isn't that what you wanted?"
Ataru stopped in his walk, Lum was stopped as well. He was married to Shinobu? He thought that was that ugly woman. That's great news! He should be ecstatic about it. And yet, his feelings barely shifted. It still felt off. She was right, wasn't it what he wanted? Of course what he truly wanted was his harem. But if he had to marry someone... he'd pick Shinobu right? So why was thinking about this future so upsetting for him? Even now that he knew it did happen? He made his mind think about it, but it was clear he dodged the obvious answer; It was a future without Lum.
"Of course not!." Ataru broke the silence, shrugging weakly with his free arm. "The kid was too much of a brat."
Lum giggled at his comment. "I wonder if our kids will be as bratty." She said, leaning toward him.
"Don't say such embarassing things out of nowhere, Lum!" Ataru flinched back, taking a few step ahead. Of course, since he was still holding her hand, it was useless.
"It's just a nice thought!" She tilted her head, with a smile. "Don't you think a future where we're married sounds nice?" Her smile didn't change much, but it felt more serious, more sentimental.
Ataru felt his heart skip a beat. He turned his head sharply to hide a blush. "Not as good as an harem, that's for sure." He scoffed, he took an assertive tone as he started to walk, confidently.
"Ataru!" Lum frowned. Come on! She thought. "That's a stupid future!" She yelled. But still... He didn't say no, he didn't say he hated the idea...
"Yeah? Well that's the one I want!" He exclaimed. "So you'll have to deal with it!" He continued, looking away.
"Deal with it?! You expect me to just be part of your stupid harem?!" She was more puzzled than furious at this point.
"Of course!"
Lum placed a finger on her chin. "What If I don't want to?"
Ataru eyes widened. He never thought this far ahead for his perfect harem dream. Everytime he thought about it, she always was the main girl. The one feeding him, close to him... Would it be such a dream reality if she wasn't here? Why do I want her to be here...? "N-not my problem." He countered easily.
Darling don't sound convinced. Lum chuckled. "I'd rather we get married, have a nice house and healthy kids." She nodded, with a smile.
She wasn't holding any punches now, she wasn't acting like it could be any guy, it was him. How long would this last?
Once again, the idea of being married to her flashed in his mind. The way it made him feel had Ataru shake his head in disgust. "To each their stupid future." Ataru shrugged.
Lum simply kept smiling. He seemed way more open to the idea than when they first met. Maybe's darling used to being called my husband! She chuckled. Either way, it was obvious her plan of staying up her UFO worked well. She's been away for a few day and he's missing her so much the Earthling lost most of his edge against her. You're adorable, Darling! As they were now both silent, she wayed her hand away, their arms going back and forth in an exagerrated manner, as her big smile didn't falter.
