"So, Jamie, can you tell me a little bit more about how you were feeling undercover?"
Jamie ran his index finger of his right hand over his earlobe and looked Doctor Margaret Fletcher in the eye.
"Things didn't always go according to plan. To be honest, when my partner and I were kidnapped while still undercover, I was scared. I was more worried about my partner's safety than my own."
Doctor Fletcher put down her pen and looked down the bridge of her nose over her glasses.
"Did you feel anxious at all?"
Jamie sighed and ran his index finger over his earlobe again.
"I was anxious. I was worried about my partner. Both of us, I guess. The whole operation. We got all the suspects. Except for the ringleader. He's still in the wind. He could be holding more victim's hostage. I guess that's what's eating me."
Doctor Fletcher looked Jamie in the eye.
"That's not the only thing bothering you."
Swallowing, Jamie tried to hide that something else was bothering him.
"My partner and I were pretending to be a married couple expecting their first baby. I tried to detach myself from Patrick, but I couldn't help but feel sorry for him."
Doctor Fletcher nodded and looked at a file in her hand.
"I know about your undercover op Jamie. I know all about Patrick. In fact, it was Chief Williams that swore me to keep this under wraps. But I told him, it was doctor/patient confidentiality, so he couldn't ask anyways because of HIPAA. Whatever we say to each other stays in this office."
Jamie nodded and shifted in the chair nervously.
"I know that. I just want things to settle down sort of and get back to normal."
Doctor Fletcher sighed and put her pen down.
"Are you still having nightmares? Or have they disappeared?"
Jamie felt a lump begin to form in his throat.
"The nightmare's come in waves actually. They revolve around Patrick though. The weird part is: I'm always a doctor in those nightmares. Here's the even stranger part: in these nightmares, Patrick belongs to both my partner and I."
Doctor Fletcher nodded and jotted down a note on her pad of paper in front of her.
"Sounds like your subconscious is asserting some sort of 'what-if' scenario."
Swallowing once more, Jamie could only stare at an invisible crack in the bookcase just behind Doctor Fletcher.
"When Eddie and I, Officer Janko and I were held hostage in an old and damp basement, all I could think about was keeping her safe. Getting her out of that place. At that point I didn't know if the men who took us had hurt her or not. I wasn't going to let anyone get to her. When we woke up in that basement, and I saw my partner lying in a bed with clean sheets and an iv in her arm with just saline running into her…
There was a man in a blue suit, he looked at me and said: That baby is coming out today, no matter what. I'm sending a doctor down.' I planted myself in front of my partner and put a hand up. I told him: 'It's too soon for the baby to be born. The baby's lungs haven't fully matured yet. It would be harmful to the baby not to mention put a strain on my wife.' But the man in the navy-blue suit didn't care. He sent down a doctor anyways. The doctor, his name was Doctor Swanson. They had something over his head. He was ready to induce labor, so I thought fast, and I knocked him out. My partner and I were able to escape. I think the biggest thing that haunts me about this whole thing is Patrick. The techs from TARU made him look so real. Patrick looked exactly like my partner and I."
Doctor Fletcher put her pen down once again and looked at Jamie seriously.
"You're doing well Jamie. I think a few more sessions will help. Now besides the nightmares, are you having any trouble sleeping?"
Jamie looked at Doctor Fletcher, he could see a look in her eyes.
"Other than the nightmares, I sleep fine. My partner and I, we aren't partners anymore. She's my girlfriend. Look I know she has an appointment with you tomorrow, and the whole doctor/patient confidentiality still stands, but her and I went through this together. Would it be alright if I sat in for it?"
Doctor Fletcher sighed and nodded.
"I suppose. I want you to go home and get some rest. If you need anything. Just call me. Have a good rest of your day Jamie."
Jamie shook hands with Doctor Fletcher.
"Thanks doc. I'll try."
"How'd it go?"
Jamie blew out a breath and hung his jacket up on the coat rack by the front door to his apartment. Eddie was sitting on the couch with a blanket over her knees and her legs tucked under her, her hair in a messy bun. She was wearing a sweatshirt and leggings. Her bare feet were sticking out from the blanket. Jamie sat down on the couch next to Eddie and tucked his own legs under him, pulling part of the blanket towards him and covering himself. He loved sharing his blankets with Eddie.
"How are you doing babe?"
Eddie nodded and stifled a sniffle.
"I'm ok. How'd it go with Doctor Fletcher?"
Jamie blew out another breath and watched as Eddie lie her head in Jamie's lap. He furrowed his brow and placed a hand on her feet.
"Ed, your feet are freezing. How about we cover them with the blanket."
Placing the blanket over her feet, Jamie nodded it satisfaction. But Eddie protested.
"My feet aren't cold babe. I promise. You are avoiding my question. How did it go with Doctor Fletcher?"
A frown formed on Jamie's face, and he sighed.
"After a couple of sessions with her I can't say I've gotten over every detail of our undercover op, but it's a process. I'll be with you tomorrow when you go in for your appointment."
Nodding, Eddie snuggled closer to Jamie. He leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"Good. I can't get through this without you."
Jamie nodded in agreement.
"I'm not going anywhere babe."
