The Sorcerer Hero: Deku
Chapter seven: The Practicals, the school, and the homeroom
Ainz was the first among the exam takers sent to the arena he went to who rushed in as soon as it was possible. The other exam takers with him were surprised, but one said that heroes don't wait for a signal to do hero work, they just act. As such the rest of the exam takers sent in with Ainz followed the lead of the Sorcerer King, who as far as they saw and could tell was a plain looking albeit deathly pale boy named Izuku Midoriya.
Ainz got it that for earning villain points, destroying as many of the villain robots as possible was necessary. You earned points bases on how many and what kinds you destroyed. Either way, Ainz was just going to destroy as many as he spotted as possible. He had to be careful with his spells as some residual effects may harm other exam takers. That would not be good for the reputation that Ainz was trying to build up for Izuku.
So simple spells, from his perspective at least, were used to destroy any villain robot he came across. Given the sheer numbers of villain robots he destroyed plus the variety among them, Ainz was confident that his score was getting up there. He even got in a chance to earn rescue points by saving a group of students cornered by a number of villain robots that outnumbered them by fifty percent or so. There was no stopping Ainz Ooal Gown.
After some time, Ainz believed that the practical portion was winding down. However, he felt the earth shake as the sounds of a might gargantuan behemoth came lumbering up. Ainz turned and saw the Zero Pointer robot he and the other exam takers were warned about. It was worth zero points, and the objective, at least from what Ainz figured, was to simply run away if the behemoth of a robot appeared on the battlefield.
Ainz was about to simply make his leave to get away from the Zero Pointer, but he stopped short upon hearing a familiar female voice cry out. Turning to look, Ainz saw Ochaco trapped under some rubble, unable to get away. If not gotten out of there in time, Ochaco will be trampled by the Zero Pointer. Ainz had no idea how U.A. intended to explain it to the Urarakas that their daughter had died at their school while taking an entrance exam.
Casting Time Stop, Ainz went in, removed the rubble, collected Ochaco, and held her bridal carry style before flying up to land on the roof of a fake building in the cityscape type arena, giving him a clear view of the Zero Pointer. Ainz then dropped the Time Stop and set Ochaco on her feet. She was so surprised by the sudden shift it allowed her to ignore the sprain in her left ankle.
She then saw it as Ainz aimed the head of the staff he was allowed to bring in due to asking for it ahead of time at the Zero Pointer. Ainz wasn't sure what he was thinking, but the fact that U.A.'s apparent carelessness nearly got a girl killed pissed him off. So the Sorcerer King decided to destroy the Zero Pointer, despite how it would offer him no points in doing so; he was simply that mad on Ochaco's behalf.
Using his strongest fire attack spell, and confident no students were in the range of attack, Ainz blasted the Zero Pointer, destroying it instantly. Once the Zero Pointer was destroyed, Ainz lowered his staff and visibly relaxed. "...There," Ainz said, "U.A. needs to be more careful with how it runs its entrance exams. Students could literally die trying to get in."
A buzzer went off, telling Ainz that the practical portion of the exams was over. Everyone got down, with Izuku helping Ochaco down because her sprain caught up to her. When the students were shown out, Ainz got some attention to have Ochaco's sprain treated. He could have done so himself, but it'd draw a lot of attention if he could heal as well as damage. A pro hero identified as Recovery Girl ended up mending Ochaco's sprain.
The exam takers were allowed to leave, being told that they can expect their letters in a few days to tell them if they got into U.A. or not. Ainz was wanting to go back to the Midoriya apartment so that Izuku could rest, but in reality he wanted to go to his office in Nazarick to make notes on how the entrance exams at U.A. are done. He also had gripes with how they can be potentially fatal to most students unless they're prepared and or know what's gonna happen.
Later in the Midoriya apartment, Ainz stepped through a portal into Izuku's room and assumed his form of Izuku. He had just finished writing down what all observations he had about U.A., and stored the notes safely in his personal bedroom in Nazarick. He also changed into an outfit that one could reasonably expect Izuku to wear when going to bed, as he told Inko that he was going to rest for a while given how the exams went.
Upon walking out of Izuku's bedroom, Ainz was greeted by Inko who handed him an envelope. "A man with long black hair and wearing mostly black came by and delivered this," Inko said as she handed the envelope to Ainz. It bore the U.A. insignia. "He said that things normally don't take so short a time as they had done for you sweetie, but apparently your performance at the entrance exams warranted an exception," Inko went on.
"Hmm, I'll see what this is about," Ainz said as he turned to head back into Izuku's room. Closing the door behind him, Ainz opened the letter and a small metal disk with a lens in it slid out into the hands of the Sorcerer King. A hologram projection came out, showing All Might in a yellow suit that Ainz mentally noted was rather tacky.
"Greetings, Young Midoriya!" All Might said, "Under normal circumstances, you wouldn't get this until a few days after the U.A. entrance exam, but your extraordinary performance during the practical portion made you an exception! Anyway, here's the main part that I bet you're wondering about; you've been accepted into U.A. High School as a member of the hero course! You'll be later sent a letter detailing the finer points, mainly when classes will start."
Ainz was very pleased by this development; already he got into U.A., and into the hero course. He had just completed his first major step for his plans for the second New World. And apparently his performance during the entrance exams were why he was told as soon as he had been. "You had been told as early as you had been because you scored all time record highs on both villain and rescue points," All Might went on, "And you tied with several other students on the written portion in getting perfect scores! You'll be a star student at U.A. for sure, Young Midoriya!"
All Might covered a few more points before the recording ended. Regardless, Ainz was glad that he got into U.A.'s hero course. Aside from being a necessary step in his plans for the second New World, Ainz knew that getting into U.A. had been Izuku's dream. This further went to pay Izuku back for how his sacrifice had helped Ainz out when he needed it the most. Now all that Ainz had to do was wait for classes at U.A. to start.
In the time before U.A. classes started for the new school year, Ainz was able to check on his various interests in the second New World. During that time, Ainz when going to check on Ochaco saw a criminal thug threaten Mrs. Uraraka into giving him her money she had on hand, even trying to use his quirk to intimidate her. The thug's quirk was an iron version of Copper Palm Spikes that made spikes ten centimeters longer and could curve and be wielded as knives.
Ainz froze time with Time Stop, took the thug's quirk with Harvest Quirk, cast a sleep spell on the thug, and dropped Time Stop, saving Mrs. Uraraka. "Ma'am, you ought to get help," Ainz said, sending Mrs. Uraraka away. This gave Ainz the chance to find a hidden place, cast Portal to Nazarick, and chuck the thug inside, telling Albedo to keep an eye on him until Ainz himself can come in and decide what to do with him.
By the time any law enforcement or pro heroes were aware of the attempted mugging, the thug had (supposedly) gotten back up and fled. Ainz and Mrs. Uraraka gave a description of the thug, and now all that could be done was begin a search for him. But he would never be found, as only Ainz knew what had happened to him; Ainz did with the thug what he did with Chisaki, let his followers in Nazarick pose suggestions on what to do with the thug.
Cocytus, as last time this happened the suggestion he made was used, was asked to refrain from offering a suggestion this time so the others had a chance. Cocytus nodded in understanding, seeing Ainz as wanting everyone to have a shot. This time, a suggestion made by Shizu ended up being used, drawing jealousy from the other battle maids. Albedo and Shalltear both looked at Aura with weirded out looks when she suggested shoving a living snake up the thug's ass, the second time she made that suggestion when she and the others were asked for ideas.
While that was going on, Ainz learned from Ochaco that she also passed the U.A. entrance exams and got into the hero course. This meant that Ochaco was going to be one of Ainz's peers in the hero course in his year at U.A. But whether or not they'd end up as classmates would be up to chance. Regardless, Ainz was happy for Ochaco; she had proven to have the qualities he felt were needed to be a pro hero. He also felt she'd be of use to raise Izuku's name.
Ainz also learned from Inko who is friends with Bakugo's mom Mitsuki that Bakugo also got into U.A.'s hero course. Ainz will admit that Bakugo's attitude had improved at least marginally, but he still felt that the explosive teen needed to be fed that serving of humble pie. Bakugo was still cocky and full of himself. Ainz figured that the humbling that Bakugo sorely needed would happen over at U.A., where Bakugo will have to contend with other students who were able to get in.
The days after Ainz got his acceptance letter passed by in a blur, and soon the day came for the Sorcerer King to begin carrying out the next step in his plans for the second New World. He also felt a little excited, as he never got much schooling back in his original life due to how the world of that time ended up being like. But Ainz here will get to experience going to high school. That plus getting a complete junior high school education were yet another reason why Ainz was grateful to Izuku.
Within short order, Ainz dressed in a U.A. student uniform for boys walked out the front door of the Midoriya apartment. "I'll see you after school, mom," Ainz said to Inko, "Here's hoping my first day of classes go well!"
"Good luck Izuku sweetie!" Inko said as she waved (who she thought was still) her son good-bye. This was the first day of the Legend of Izuku Midoriya that was going to be established by Ainz Ooal Gown, a legend that will help pave the way for The Great Tomb of Nazarick to take over this second New World and all that it had to offer.
Ainz actually used magic to get to U.A., finding a hidden area in an alley near the apartment complex where the Midoriyas lived then casting Greater Teleportation to zoom instantly to the small apartment maintained above the music store across the street from U.A. Yet another reason why Ainz wanted storefronts near Japan's top hero high school.
This apartment was empty, used more as a storage room for the music store than anything else. But it was perfect for Ainz's purposes. He went to a door that opened to a metal stairwell along the side of the building, closed the door behind him, used a magic item from his inventory to lock the door behind him, put said magic item back in his inventory, then went down the stairwell and made his way over to U.A.
...
Ainz soon made his way up to where he got it his homeroom would be, a classroom designated as Class 1-A. The door was quite tall and large, no doubt to compensate for those with quirks that would otherwise be an issue. Stepping inside, Ainz spotted a boy with dark bluish hair and wearing glasses scolding Bakugo for having his feet up on the desk he was sitting at. To Ainz, Bakugo's behavior here was unsurprising, even a bit mild compared to what he's seen Bakugo do before.
"Oh, we're in the same homeroom, Midoriya!" the familiar voice of Ochaco spoke up, making Ainz turn to see Ochaco standing there; aside from a skirt and stockings as opposed to pants, Ochaco wore an U.A. uniform identical to what boys are given.
"Ah, Uraraka-san," Ainz greeted, "It certainly is a pleasure to see you. But I believe that we ought to address the fellow laying on the ground right outside the doorway." Ainz's detection magic had clued him in on the person waiting outside; no one would be able to pull any manner of sneaking on the Sorcerer King.
As Ochaco looked confused, a voice behind her spoke up, "At least one of you has awareness of their surroundings." Ochaco turned to look and saw a sullen looking man laying in a yellow sleeping bag, only his face visible. He looked like he was in a cocoon. He then got up, shedding his sleeping bag cocoon in the process. He was a fair skinned man with long black hair, mildly scruffy facial hair, and he wore a length of white cloth around his neck like a scarf, a black long sleeved shirt, black pants, and black shoes.
Ainz had reason to believe that this man was the one who delivered his U.A. acceptance letter early. The man made his way into the homeroom while getting everyone to sit down in their seats. "It took you five seconds to settle down," the man said to Ainz and his new classmates, "I bet it would have been longer had your peer not alerted you to my presence. You all ought to follow his example. It's irrational to waste time."
"I'm guessing you're our homeroom teacher?" asked a girl with pink skin, pink hair, and little yellow horns.
Nodding once, the man said, "Yeah. The name's Shouta Aizawa, but you kids will address me as Aizawa-sensei. Am I clear?" The class replied in unison, most saying words to the effect of yes sir Aizawa-sensei. Even this was something Ainz found himself secretly enjoying; another hallmark of attending school. "Anyway, after we do roll call, we're heading out to the track to do an assessment test. I wanna see how good your quirks are."
"Aizawa-sensei, sir," said the bluish haired glasses wearing boy, "Isn't there an orientation assembly we have to go to?"
"Here at U.A., the teachers have a lot of freedom to run their classes as they see fit," Aizawa said, "It's why the school has gotten such great results. The orientation assembly is an illogical waste of time if you ask me, so we're skipping it so I can see what you guys are made of. But I'm warning you all right now." A serious look entered Aizawa's eyes. "I will expel the one among you who gets the overall lowest score in the assessment test."
The entirety of Class 1-A was immediately put on alert by Aizawa's threatening promise. Even Ainz was a bit put off, as only heads of administration at schools have such authority as expelling students from school. What's a homeroom teacher doing with such authority? Unraveling all of the secrets of U.A. was a priority for Ainz if his goals were to succeed here.
He was also going to be careful in dealing with Aizawa.
...
A short while later, Ainz and all of his classmates were wearing P.E. uniforms for U.A. students as they all stood outside at a track. Ainz, figuring that their physical prowess was going to be tested here, used Time Stop so he'd have time to cast literally every buff he had that he could think of that he thought would be of use here. He then dropped Time Stop once he had all of his buffs in play to help him here.
As it turned out, Aizawa's quirk assessment test was a series of exercises that P.E. classes at the junior high level had students do, but here Aizawa told students to use their quirks to do as well as they could while giving it everything they had. The Sorcerer King saw what was going on here, and he bet that he'd be wowing with his Sorcery 'quirk'.
The first exercise was a ball throw, and Bakugo went first. Boosting the throw with Explosion, Bakugo got a distance of a little over seven-hundred meters. Aizawa then called for Izuku to go next. As Ainz stepped forward, he heard some of his classmates whisper about him due to the level of renown the name of Izuku Midoriya already had. Stepping up to the spot to throw the ball from, Ainz looked to Aizawa.
"A quick question, Aizawa-sensei," Ainz began, "How durable are these balls we're going to be using for this exercise?"
"Even All Might at full power slamming his fist down on one at full force would be hard pressed to do any notable damage," Aizawa replied.
Turning to look forward to throw the ball he had, Ainz said, "Fair enough." Getting ready to throw the ball by boosting it with Fireball, Ainz silently applied the appropriate spell buff to get as much range as possible. That, plus the buffs he applied to himself while he had time frozen netted him a rather jaw dropping distance of over twenty-thousand meters. Even Aizawa showed surprise by just how far Ainz got the ball to go.
"...Don't tell me we have All Might part two in class..." Aizawa muttered under his breath.
...
The rest of the ball throw exercise came and went, with Ochaco getting first place as her Zero Gravity quirk let her simply float the ball up into the sky and get a score of infinity. Ainz was rather impressed that someone weaker than him applying what power they had creatively was able to get a better score than him. Regardless, Ainz still had bar none the best score in the ball throw exercise that could actually be measured.
The rest of the exercises came and went, with Ainz using his magic where and when needed; for example on a running exercise, Ainz simply cast Time Stop again and walked at leisure to the finish line, getting there before dropping Time Stop. Not even the bluish haired glasses wearing boy, who Ainz got was named Tenya Iida, did as well despite having a quirk that made him super fast. Ainz was proving to be top tier.
At the end of the quirk assessment test, Aizawa revealed the scores, and Ainz saw that Izuku's name was at the top, with the name Minoru Mineta at the bottom. "Oh and by the way," Aizawa said, "I was lying about expelling the student who placed last. It was a logical ruse to make you all work as hard as possible."
As the students all felt relieved, Ainz... had mixed emotions. He was a tad put off by the way Aizawa acted as a teacher, but he did see the value in what Aizawa was doing to get the most out of the student in class. Ainz just hoped that Aizawa knew where to draw the line, otherwise he may cause irreversible damage too great to fix. Regardless, things were settled for the day, so the students were able to take their leave.
As Ainz was getting ready to go home (he was just going to go to the music store across the street and use the apartment above the store to hide as he cast Greater Teleportation to get to where the Midoriyas lived), he was met up by Ochaco and Tenya. "I have to admit, Midoriya," Tenya said, "You certainly are a very impressive person. I have no doubt you'll become a great hero."
"You got first place in the quirk assessment test, Midoriya-kun!" Ochaco said, "You made that smug jerk Bakugo look like a joke!"
"Ah, you aren't entirely fond of him either," Ainz said, "I know Kacchan from personal experience, it's why I call him Kacchan, as we went to preschool, elementary school, and junior high school together. Let's just say he's... rough around the edges. Mind you I have seen improvements in his overall behavior, but I still feel a bit more improvement in him is necessary."
Ochaco and Tenya were surprised to hear that Izuku had a history with Bakugo, and for their sake Ainz withheld the less savory parts of said history. Regardless, the three got off on a great start, and Ainz felt that Tenya ought to be afforded a courtesy comparable to what the Sorcerer King was going to give to Ochaco. Having friends that speak highly of Izuku will help Ainz with his goals for the second New World.
...And he felt that he may get back at least a fraction of what he's been missing ever since the rest of his guild mates left YGGDRASIL.
A few days later, Aizawa with All Might's help ran an exercise where the students of Class 1-A were grouped into ten pairs of two, where five of the pairs were designated as hero teams and the other five were designated as villain teams. The villain teams would each fight one of the hero teams in a simulation where the heroes had to stop the villains who had a big bomb, actually a paper mache prop to look like a big bomb.
For the hero team to win, they either had to defeat both members of the villain team by capturing them, or touch the quote unquote bomb. For the villain team to win, they either had to capture both members of the hero team or keep the hero team from the bomb for ten minutes after the timer for the exercise started. A simple enough task that Ainz was confident that he'd be able to win with his partner, regardless of their role or who his partner was.
Ainz saw that his partner was Ochaco and they were a hero team against the villain team of Bakugo and Tenya. Everyone was in their hero costumes, which for Ainz saw him use a variant of his usual robe he wore in Nazarick. This robe was modified in appearance though; the front was kept closed, there were no bony looking pauldrons with red orbs in them, there was no hood, and it had the black replaced with a bright and vibrant royal purple. Ainz also had the staff that he had used back in the entrance exams.
"Are you a wizard, Midoriya?" asked one boy with yellow hair with a black lightning bolt pattern on the side. Ainz identified this boy as Denki Kaminari.
"Considering what my quirk is and how it works, many would view me as a sort of wizard anyway, Kaminari-san," Ainz replied. Bakugo and Tenya were given time to go in and set up to be ready for Ainz and Ochaco to head in to try and beat them. Once the villain team was ready, Ainz and Ochaco were given the cue to proceed.
Although Ainz could instantly win with his magic if he wanted to, he figured that he had to take things slowly so as to not draw too much attention to himself. As such, he ran in with Ochaco at his side. As they made their way up to where the bomb room was, Bakugo tried attacking Ainz, but the Sorcerer King was unaffected due to the sheer difference in level between him and the person who was trying to attack him.
After Bakugo jumped back, he was about to say something, but Ainz cast Time Stop, cast a sleep spell on Bakugo, then dropped the Time Stop. Bakugo then instantly fell over onto the floor, very much out of it. Ochaco was a bit alarmed to see Bakugo suddenly collapse like that, but checking him she saw he was merely asleep. She then proceeded to capture him.
"Keep an eye on Kacchan," Ainz said, "I bet that Iida-san is guarding the objective, so I'll go deal with him."
"Will you be fine, Midoriya-kun?" Ochaco asked.
"Oh, I'm sure I'll be fine," Ainz replied before taking off. Within short order, the Sorcerer King reached the bomb room, a wide open space where he saw the 'bomb' in the middle of the room. As he had anticipated, Ainz saw Tenya in the middle of the room, right in front of the bomb.
"There you are, would be hero!" Tenya said, clearly trying to role play as a villain, "If you think you can beat me and save the day alone, you have another thing coming!" Although Ainz had a bit of respect for Tenya, the guy could NOT act like a villain to save his life. Ainz hadn't seen such cheesy acting since his YGGDRASIL days where Ulbert would make a mocking impersonation of Touch Me.
Ainz allowed Tenya to finish before letting him charge him a bit. But Tenya only got half way to Ainz before the Sorcerer King cast Time Stop, walked up to the 'bomb', placed a hand on it, then released the Time Stop. The hero team of Ainz and Ochaco had won against the villain team of Bakugo and Tenya. Once again, Ainz had shown his peers that Izuku Midoriya was not a name to be doubted.
The rest of the matches went by in a blur, and Ainz couldn't care less who won or lost. However, he did take note of a boy named Shoto Todoroki, who won things for his hero team by freezing the building the bomb was in, and everything in it including the villain team inside. Todoroki had shown the highest level of power out of any of Ainz's peers in Class 1-A, making him one that Ainz wanted to keep an eye out for.
Ainz may be interested in a copy of Todoroki's cryomancy quirk. He made notes on the quirks of all of the students in Class 1-A in case any appealed to him and he wanted to use Duplicate Quirk later to get extra Quirk Jewels of said quirks. For example, the quirk of that Toru Hagakure girl, which makes her person permanently invisible. Ainz wanted to see how the invisibility of Hagakure's quirk compared to Perfect Unknowable.
He was also interested in the quirk of another girl in Class 1-A, Momo Yaoyorozu. She could spawn items from her person without limit if she knew the composition of the items in question. If it could be used to spawn YGGDRASIL materials and ingredients, then its value in the eyes of the Sorcerer King would skyrocket. Ainz just needed to learn more about the exact specifics of Yaoyorozu's quirk so he could make a more informed decision.
The quirk of the bird headed boy in Class 1-A, Fumikage Tokoyami, also appealed to Ainz. Called Dark Shadow, it was the first case Ainz had seen of a sentient quirk, and a shadow creature came out of Fumikage at his command, coming out from his belly button supposedly and remaining attached there. Ainz wasn't sure if duplicating such a quirk was feasible as the quirk is sentient, but it still appealed to him.
Ainz wrote down notes on the quirks of all of his peers, and numbered them in order from which appealed to him the most to which were the least appealing to him, the closer a number was to one meaning it held greater value in the eyes of Ainz Ooal Gown. The notes he had were only general observations, he would need finer details before he could proceed with doing anything involving any of the quirks of his peers.
But the Sorcerer King was going to be having fun with this research as he worked towards taking over this second New World. And woe to anyone foolish enough to try and disrupt the fun that Ainz was wanting to have. In Izuku's bedroom at the Midoriya apartment that night, Ainz after doing all of Izuku's homework began going over his personal notes on the quirks of the Class 1-A students.
END, CHAPTER SEVEN
Author's notes;
This chapter sees Ainz pass the U.A. entrance exams, setting several records in the process. He also establishes a base of reputation for Izuku at U.A., not to mention places first in the infamous quirk assessment test Aizawa ran. Ainz also starts building up a base of friends for Izuku, getting both Ochaco and Tenya.
Then the heroes versus villains exercise goes down; the teams, roles, match ups, and outcomes are all the same as they are in canon, only difference is the Izuku-Ochaco team wins more easily as Izuku is actually Ainz. Speaking of, Ainz takes notes on the quirks of all of his peers in Class 1-A. They're only general observations right now, but some of them already appeal to Ainz. Things will continue from here in the next chapter. Until then, take care.
