NOTE: This takes place in my custom MK timeline. You can read my MK fanfic, "Induction", to get an idea of when this takes place as well as why certain characters won't be appearing. It's also important to note that Mileena is still a clone of Kitana like in the original timeline. I will be referencing several MK games and other media in my fanfics. THE PROPOSAL

THE FIRST DAY

-EDENIA, THE GREAT HALL-

All was quiet in the Edenian Great Hall. Queen Sindel sat in the main throne with two others beside her. On her left was an extravagant yet empty chair. One that was meant for her "daughter" Mileena but she chose to embrace her Outworld heritage in the path of darkness. On her right was another extravagant chair and on it sat her true daughter Kitana, hands down on her lap with one knee resting over the other. Next to Kitana stood her personal guard and best friend Jade, staff at the ready. There were guards clad in purple armor and armed with Spears. They awaited the arrival of the ambassador Tanya who was supposed to bring news from Outworld.

Suddenly, the doors were opened by two guards. They allowed Tanya to stroll inside with a guest. Behind her was the Outworlder Reiko, one of Shao Kahn's best generals. He looked around the hall and noticed the guards clutching their spears. It was to be expected given Outworld's and Edenia's sordid history together. Both Tanya and Reiko kneeled respectfully and Tanya spoke.

"Queen Sindel, I present to you general Reiko of Outworld. He bears a message and an offer from Emperor Shao Kahn. A deal that will make the Emperor abandon his claim to Edenia."

Sindel eyed Reiko suspiciously. She expected treachery and would have him imprisoned if he hadn't arrived to this realm unarmed and surrendered. She spoke and acted cautiously.

"Thank you Tanya. You may go," Sindel ordered. Tanya stood to leave, glancing at Reiko and the empty throne before leaving the Great Hall. "Stand, general Reiko."

Reiko obeyed and stood to face the queen of Edenia.

"You risk your life coming to this realm, despite being unarmed. You should have known that your surrender would be treated with the upmost suspicion. Explain yourself, while you still can."

"Queen Sindel, I appreciate your willingness to hear me. You are as honorable and fair as the people believe you to be," Reiko complimented. Sindel scoffed at the empty flattery.

"I come with an offer from emperor Shao Kahn himself. As you know, Shao Kahn must achieve ten consecutive Mortal Kombat tournament victories in order to conquer a realm. He has set his sights on Edenia but is willing consider another path given our realms' history together." Reiko paused to let Sindel think this though.

"What would cause Shao Kahn to abandon his attempt at conquest? He is not the kind to abandon an opportunity for more power."

"No, he is not. But, he seeks to benefit from Edenia in a different way. He suggests a three-way marriage between Edenia and Outworld. This way, he can know what goes on in Edenia and you can do the same. He has selected me to be the groom and has chosen princess Mileena to be the Outworlder bride."

"And who has he chosen to be the Edenian bride?" Sindel asked cautiously.

"He has chosen…princess Kitana…"

Kitana gasped, Sindel was at a loss for words and Jade readied herself. Reiko placed his right fist over his heart and extended his left palm over to Kitana.

"Princess Kitana, this is my proposal. Will you marry me?"

Despite her shock, Kitana could tell the gesture was genuine. It was an Edenian custom that exemplified a man's honesty and loyalty. She stood up from her chair and walked till she was in front of Reiko. She raised her right hand, winded it back, and slapped Reiko across the face. Reiko flinched slightly from the force but took a deep breath before turning to face Kitana.

"You would DARE propose to me given you and your emperor's treachery!? Not only that, but you would have me 'share' you with my 'sister'!? When I was Outworld's Kahnum, I should have had you-"

"Kitana! That is enough! Restrain yourself!" Sindel ordered. Kitana looked back at her mother breathing heavily. Sindel could see that her daughter was barely containing her anger and motioned for her sit back down. Kitana took one last look at Reiko and returned to her chair, composing herself. Sindel spoke again.

"Should I accept this…should my daughter accept this…will this cause Shao Kahn to abandon his claim to Edenia?" Sindel asked.

"As long as the marriage is upheld, he will not try to conquer Edenia. Though, if another realm tries to interfere in this or if something were to happen to the groom and brides, he will start another Mortal Kombat tournament, as per the Elder Gods rules. This is strictly a deal between Outworld and Edenia," Reiko elaborated. "Though, he suspected that the brides may be hesitant to accept. For that reason, he is giving both brides seven days to consider the marriage. Today is the first day."

"…We will consider this…" Sindel answered. Kitana turned to her mother in disbelief.

"Mother! You cannot seriously-"

"Kitana!" Sindel interrupted sternly. She gave her daughter a serious look and with that, Kitana became silent. Sindel turned to Reiko to finish their conversation.

"General Reiko, you may return to Outworld. Tell Shao Kahn that we will consider this proposal but have not accepted it. Go, now."

"Of course Queen Sindel. Thank you for hearing me." Reiko bowed and turned to leave.

-MOMENTS LATER-

Sindel, Kitana and Jade have convened in a private room to discuss this deal. Sindel ponders by the fireplace while Kitana paces back and fourth with Jade trying to calm her down.

"The audacity of him! The audacity of Shao Kahn to even command him to do this! Kitana yelled.

"Kitana, please. Knowing Shao Kahn, he expected you to react this way. Do not play into his hand," Jade tried to reason.

"We play into it regardless of what I decide! Do you not see that?!"

Jade hung her head and turned to Sindel who was still looking into the fireplace.

"And what about you mother? Considering a deal like this…did you not hear what Reiko said!?" Kitana questioned.

"Did you!?" Sindel snapped back. "If Reiko was to be imprisoned or killed, Shao Kahn would start the Mortal Kombat tournament, again. The realms would never be at war, again. We would lose Edenia, AGAIN!"

Kitana was stunned at the realization. She was too angry to consider the facts.

"I-I did not consider-" Kitana began but was interrupted by Sindel.

"If you had been more considerate, your reign as Outworld's Kahnum would have lasted longer and half of Outworld would not have rejected you!" Sindel scolded.

Kitana could only hang her head shamefully. Sindel saw how disappointed Kitana was at herself and took a deep breath before apologizing.

"Forgive me daughter. I admit, this…deal…has deeply disturbed me."

"No mother. You are right. I should have been more considerate. I should not have spoken to you and Jade like that…" Kitana admitted.

"It is alright Kitana," Jade said. "We understand your anger and frustration."

"Thank you Jade. We cannot repay your loyalty and friendship enough," Sindel said.

"I appreciate your words my queen. What must we do now?" Jade asked.

"We must prepare. I think it is odd the way Tanya glanced at the empty chair and then at Reiko. I suspect collusion between them," Sindel thought.

"I noticed that as well. Tanya has a history of treachery. First with Shinnok and again with Onaga. I will obtain the truth from her," Jade declared.

"No. The animosity between you two is too great. She will not tell you the truth and we could lose a lead. I kept her as an ambassador instead of sentencing her to prison so that she can feel a false sense of security. That we can keep a close eye on her in case she returns to her treacherous ways. With that said, I will speak to her," Sindel stated.

"Agreed my queen," Jade said with a bow.

"And Kitana…" Sindel said. Kitana turned to face her mother. Sindel placed her hands on her daughter's shoulders and looked her in the eyes.

"We still have a few days to devise a plan. Trust that I will not hand you to our enemies. I couldn't bear to have Shao Kahn take you from me again."

"I understand mother. I will act wisely," Kitana declared. Sindel smiled.

"I know you will."

-MEANWHILE, IN OUTWORLD, SHAO KAHN'S THRONE ROOM-

Reiko has returned to Outworld to deliver the news to his emperor, Shao Kahan. The emperor of Outworld sat on his throne pleased with the information. Despite Kitana's refusal, all seemed to go as planned.

"Excellent work general. My confidence in you was not misplaced," Shao Kahn complimented.

"I am what you have made me, sir."

"I am certain that Kitana will accept the proposal. Her love for her realm and family will lead her into fulfilling my plan. My foothold on Edenia will be secured," Shao Kahn stated confidently.

"And what of your daughter Mileena? Will she accept the marriage?" Reiko asked.

"She will. How soon she does will be up to you," Shao Kahn said while pointing his finger at Reiko.

"Yes, my emperor. I will not fail you."

With a salute, Reiko turned and left the throne room.

Meanwhile, Mileena, Kitana's clone sister, sat alone in her dimly-lit bedchamber. She had been sitting in front of a desk mirror brushing her hair when she heard a knock on her door.

"Enter," she said. From her mirror she saw Reiko standing with the door opened.

"Ah, come in," she said sweetly. Reiko entered and shut the door. Locking it as well.

"I take it my sister told you no?" Mileena asked expectantly.

"She declined my proposal but she will reconsider," Reiko replied.

"Oh, I know she will," Mileena said while standing up from her desk. She but her brush down and turned to face Reiko. Despite the dim lights, Reiko could see Mileena's face. A once beautiful face twisted by a monstrous grin. She retained a pair of lips but a long scar ran across her mouth, the edges reaching her cheeks. Her smile showed her glowing yellow eyes and sharpened teeth, the Tarkatan features that she was "born" with. While she bore monstrous teeth, Reiko knew that there was many more that she was hiding in that mouth of hers. He grinned as well.

"She aired out her frustrations with a slap to my face but it was nothing I could not handle," Reiko said smugly.

"Ever the confident general," Mileena complimented. She was now face to face with him, their noses inches away. A dangerous situation for most people but a familiar one to Reiko.

"My sister does not know what she is missing," Mileena purred as she ran her hands through his chest. Reiko took the initiative and wrapped an arm around her waist.

"Mmmm, aren't you supposed to propose to me first?" Mileena teased.

"We both know you have already accepted," Reiko teased back.
