The morning light crept through the curtains as Maddie's behavior seemed out of the ordinary.
"Here's your lunch, sweetheart," Hailey said with a gentle smile, offering the lunch bag.
Maddie's eyes lingered on the bag, but she didn't reach for it.
"It's your favorite PB&J," Hailey continued, her smile unwavering.
Maddie shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper. "I want daddy…"
Hailey knew Jay needed a long hot shower, after what happened last night, but it was diffcult when your youngest daughter wanted her daddy.
Hailey assured with a smile, "He's just freshening up, sweetheart. He'll be out in a bit."
Maddie's little head bobbed in disagreement, her gaze fixed on the floor.
"Daddy! I need my Daddy!" she exclaimed with a mix of frustration and longing.
Just then, Jay emerged from the bathroom, a towel wrapped snugly around his waist.
"What's all the noise?" Jay inquired, his brow furrowed in confusion.
Maddie burst into tears, her little face scrunched up in distress, and Jay's expression softened into a gentle frown.
"What's the matter, my little one?" Jay cooed, his voice filled with concern.
Maddie clung to Jay's shoulder, her tiny fists clenched tightly as she wailed softly.
Jay knelt down to Maddie's level, his eyes full of tenderness. "Hey there, my little star," he whispered, "tell me what's got you all teary-eyed."
Maddie hiccupped between sobs, her lower lip quivering. "I… I wanted to play with the blocks, but they're all mixed up," she managed to say between sniffles.
Jay's heart melted at the sight of his younger daughter in distress. He gently patted her back and said, "Don't worry, baby. We'll sort them out together. Come on, let's go to the playroom."
He scooped her up into his arms and carried her to the playroom, where colorful blocks were scattered across the floor. Jay sat down on the carpet and placed Maddie beside him.
"Okay, let's start with the red ones," Jay suggested, picking up a red block and handing it to Maddie. "You can put this one in the red bucket."
Maddie nodded eagerly and reached for the block. With a giggle, she placed it in the bucket. Jay smiled and continued to guide her through sorting the blocks by color.
As they worked together, Maddie's tears turned into giggles.
Hailey walked into the playroom, holding Maddie's school uniform.
"It's time for school!" Hailey beamed, her eyes twinkling with pride.
Maddie's face lit up with joy, but then she noticed Jay wasn't following her. "Daddy? You helping me?" Jay asked, his voice a mix of hope and confusion.
Maddie's smile faded, and she began to sob softly. Jay's heart sank at the sight of his daughter's distress. He quickly moved to her side, scooping her up into his arms and whispering, "Of course, I'll help you, my little princess. Let's get you ready for school together."
Jay gently wiped away her tears and helped her put on the uniform. Maddie sniffled and nodded, feeling the warmth of her father's love.
In the truck. Hailey asked Maddie, "What are you gonna learn today, my little butterfly?"
Maddie's tiny hands gripped her diary, her face alight with the thrill of learning. "Mats and Books!" she chattered excitedly.
A soft chuckle escaped Hailey and Jay as they exchanged knowing glances. They understood that Maddie was referring to her favorite subjects: English and Maths.
"Looks like a good day," Jay said. "Have fun with your learning, Maddie."
Hailey pulled up to the school, and Maddie leaped out.
"Bye, little munchkin! Love ya!" Jay called out with a grin.
The door shut with a bang, and Maddie scampered through the gates.
Hailey let out a gentle sigh and maneuvered her car out of the parking space.
"Do you have any cravings at the moment?" Hailey inquired.
Jay's lips curled into a playful smirk as he glanced over at Hailey.
"Waffles and bacon?" Jay suggested with a smirk.
Hailey returned the smirk and gave a subtle nod.
"Indeed…" Hailey murmured.
Hailey and Jay pulled into the cozy diner, the aroma of breakfast wafting through the air.
"We're officially on PTO," Hailey declared with a smirk.
Jay nodded, savoring the taste of his bacon.
Back in the classroom, Maddie's emotions were getting the better of her.
Miss Hope paused her lecture and turned her attention to Maddie.
"Please, Maddie, get your head off your desk," Miss Hope requested calmly.
Maddie remained seated, her eyes brimming with tears.
"Maddie, I need you to listen. Please get your head off your desk," Miss Hope insisted firmly.
Maddie's tears began to flow, and the class erupted in laughter.
"Uh-oh! Did someone have an accident?" Kelly joked, unaware of the impact of her words.
Maddie shook her head, her distress evident. Miss Hope, recognizing the need for support, called the guidance therapist.
"Maddie, would you like to gather your things and come with me?" Miss Lewis asked gently, offering a comforting presence.
Miss Lewis led Maddie out of the classroom, her steps slow and deliberate. The guidance therapist, Mr. Bennett, met them at the door with a warm smile and a reassuring nod.
"Come on, Maddie," he said softly. "Let's find a quiet place where you can feel safe."
They walked down the hallway to a small, cozy room filled with soft cushions and calming colors. Mr. Bennett sat down next to Maddie and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"Maddie, it's okay to feel upset," he said. "Sometimes, our emotions can be overwhelming, but you're not alone. We're here to help you through this."
Maddie sniffled and nodded, her eyes brimming with tears. She felt a sense of relief knowing that someone understood and cared.
Mr. Bennett handed her a box of tissues and waited patiently as she wiped away her tears. After a few moments of silence, he asked, "Would you like to talk about what happened?"
Maddie took a deep breath and began to share her story. As she spoke, Mr. Bennett listened attentively, offering words of comfort and understanding.
Maddie's voice trembled as she spoke, "Mr. Bennett, can I call my mama and dada? I want them."
Mr. Bennett nodded understandingly. "Of course, Maddie. Let's give them a call together."
He picked up the phone and dialed the number, his hand steady and reassuring. As the phone rang, Maddie clutched her backpack tightly, her heart pounding with anticipation.
Hailey and Jay were driving home from the diner and Hailey's phone rang.
"It's Maddie's school?" Hailey replied.
Jay was confused also worried.
"Why?" Jay asked.
Hailey shrugged and answered the phone.
Finally, a familiar voice answered on the other end. "Hello?"
"Mama, Daddy," Maddie said, her voice breaking. "I'm at school with Miss Lewis and Mr. Bennett. I'm feeling really sad."
Hailey and Jay sighed and looked at each other.
"We'll come pick you up, baby." Jay replied.
Maddie's eyes fluttered shut, and she let out a contented sigh as she drifted off to sleep.
Time passed, and soon Maddie was nestled comfortably in Jay's arms, her breathing steady and calm.
Jay tenderly kissed the top of Maddie's head and gently ran his fingers through her golden locks.
Hailey glanced over, concern etched on her face. "Should I take her?" she offered.
Jay looked up, a soft smile playing on his lips. "She's got a death grip on my jeans," he whispered with a chuckle. "I haven't seen that since I left.".
The evening had settled in, and the trio found themselves in the comfort of their home. Maddie, her eyelids heavy with sleep, was carefully placed in her bed. Jay and Hailey, their hearts full of love, nestled into their bed. As they lay there, the soft glow of the nightlight cast a warm hue over the room, and they succumbed to the embrace of sleep,
