Jay was preparing Maddie's school lunch while Ashley was away on a school trip in Paris, and Hailey was serving on jury duty.

"Dada? Where's my turtle?" Maddie cooed.

Jay leaned against the kitchen counter, a hint of frustration in his voice.

"I'm not sure…?" Jay replied, trying to keep his cool.

Maddie continued her search.

"I SAID I DON'T KNOW!" Jay exclaimed, his patience wearing thin.

Maddie's small lip wobbled, and her eyes filled with tears. Jay immediately softened, realizing his outburst had hurt her more than he intended. He knelt down to her level, his voice gentle and apologetic.

"I'm sorry, Maddie. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that. Let's find your turtle together, okay?" Jay said, offering a comforting smile.

Maddie nodded, wiping away her tears. "Okay, Dada," she sniffled.

Jay put his hand on her shoulder, and they began their search once more. As they looked under the couch and behind the curtains, Jay couldn't help but feel grateful for the little moments that made life so precious. Despite the headache throbbing in his temples, he was determined to make things right for Maddie.

Let's head to school," Jay murmured, the dull ache in his head still assaulting his vision.

As they drove towards the school, Maddie's chatter filled the car, her excitement about the day ahead evident in her every word. Jay tried to focus on the road, but the persistent headache made it difficult to concentrate.

"Dada, I can't wait to show my friends my new drawing!" Maddie exclaimed, her voice a mix of joy and anticipation.

Jay glanced at her through the rearview mirror, a small smile tugging at his lips despite the pain. "That sounds wonderful, sweetheart. But could you maybe take a little break from talking? Dada's head is giving him a bit of trouble," he said softly.

Maddie looked back at him, her expression one of concern. "Oh no, Dada! I'm sorry. I'll be quiet," she promised, her voice now a whisper.

Jay nodded gratefully and turned up the radio slightly to help drown out the noise. As they pulled into the school parking lot, he took a deep breath.

As they walked towards the school gates, Maddie glanced at Jay, her brow furrowed with concern. "Dada, why do you look so tired?" she asked, her voice tinged with worry.

Jay's attempt to reassure Maddie was gentle, his smile not quite reaching his eyes. "I promise, it's nothing serious. Just a bit of a headache, that's all," he said, patting her head softly.

"Off you go, little one!" Jay's smile was warm.

Maddie dashed towards the school and disappeared inside.

"I love you too," Jay murmured.

Jay returned to the truck, but halted when a sudden jolt of electricity surged through his head.

"Damn it," he muttered under his breath.

Jay made his way back to the apartment, struggling to stay awake at the wheel.

Jay returned to his apartment, his eyelids heavy with fatigue as he walked up the small stairs of the apartment building.

Upon entering, he dimmed the lights and removed his shoes.

Collapsing onto the couch, the silence enveloped him, and tears welled up as his headache intensified.

Jay was out and he didn't hear the door unlocking.

The door revealed Hailey, his wife.

Hailey walked into the lounge and saw Jay.

Jay lay still, his eyes shut tight, resting his head upon a soft pillow. His shirt was haphazardly pulled up, revealing the pallor of his skin. He appeared to be in a state of distress.

"Jay?" Hailey's voice pierced the silence, reaching out into the shadows.

With a gentle approach, Hailey made her way to Jay's side and knelt beside him.

"Darling, could you please open your eyes?" she softly urged, her voice laced with concern. Jay remained motionless, his baby green eyes hidden beneath closed lids.

Jay's body convulsed as he sat up, the pain in his head intensifying with each passing moment. His eyes, once closed, now snapped open in agony, and he let out a heart-wrenching sob that echoed through the room.

"Hailey," he gasped, his voice strained by the throbbing ache. "It's my head… it hurts so much."

Hailey's heart ached at the sight of Jay's suffering. She moved closer, her hands reaching out to gently cradle his face.

"Shh, Jay," she murmured, her voice filled with compassion. "I'm here. Let me help you."

With tender care, Hailey guided Jay back down onto the pillow, her fingers soothingly massaging his temples in an attempt to ease the pain.

As the door creaked open, Adam stepped into the room, the sudden brightness of the lights causing Jay to wince and sob even louder. Maddie, Jay's four-year-old daughter, clung to her turtle, her eyes wide with concern.

"Adam," Hailey's voice was firm, yet laced with urgency. "Please, turn off the lights. It's too much for him."

Adam quickly complied, dimming the lights to a soft glow that was kinder to Jay's sensitive eyes. He knelt beside his brother, Maddie still in his arms, and offered a comforting presence.

"Jay," Adam said gently, "it's going to be okay. We're here for you."

Hailey nodded in agreement, her eyes never leaving Jay's face.

Hailey carefully lifted Jay into her lap, cradling him against her chest. She pressed her hands to his back, massaging away the tremors that wracked his body. Her touch was gentle yet firm, a silent promise of comfort and safety.

"Shh, it's alright," she whispered, her voice a soothing balm to his frayed nerves. "Just breathe with me, Jay. In and out."

Jay's sobs began to subside as he found solace in Hailey's embrace. The rhythmic rise and fall of her chest, the steady beat of her heart, all worked together to calm the storm within him. In that moment, he knew he was not alone.

Hailey's voice was a gentle murmur, a lullaby that seemed to weave through the air and wrap around Jay like a warm blanket. "Let's go to the bedroom," she whispered, her words soft and reassuring. "You can fall asleep for a bit."

With careful steps, she guided him away from the chaos of the living room, where the remnants of their earlier turmoil lay scattered like forgotten memories. The hallway was quiet, save for the distant hum of the city outside, and as they entered the bedroom, Hailey tucked him into bed with a tenderness that spoke volumes of her care.

She fluffed his pillow, smoothed out the sheets, and then sat beside him, her presence a silent guardian against the night's uncertainties. "Just close your eyes," she coaxed, her fingers tracing soothing patterns on his arm. "I'm here with you."

Jay nodded, his eyelids heavy with exhaustion and relief. As he drifted into sleep, Hailey remained by his side, watching over him with a vigilance born of love.

As the morning light filtered through the curtains, Jay awoke feeling refreshed and free from the throbbing pain that had plagued him. The migraine that had held him captive in the night's embrace had vanished, leaving behind a sense of clarity and calm.

Hailey, who had been watching over him, greeted him with a warm smile. "Good morning, sleepyhead," she said. "How are you feeling?"

"Much better," Jay replied, stretching his limbs and sitting up. "I can't believe the headache is gone."

"That's wonderful," Hailey said, her eyes sparkling with joy. "Now that you're up and about, how about we make some cookies? It'll be fun!"

Jay nodded eagerly, the idea of baking together lifting his spirits even higher. They gathered the ingredients—flour, sugar, butter, and chocolate chips—and set to work in the cozy kitchen.

As they mixed and measured, Hailey shared stories of her childhood baking adventures, and Jay listened intently, laughing at her tales of cookie mishaps and triumphs. The aroma of freshly baked cookies soon filled the air, a sweet testament to their teamwork.

Finally, the cookies were ready, golden brown and perfectly chewy. Hailey and Jay sat down at the kitchen table, savoring their creations with cups of hot cocoa.

"This is amazing," Jay said between bites. "Thank you for everything, Hailey."

Hailey reached across the table and took his hand. "Anytime," she said. "I'm just glad you're feeling better."

And as they enjoyed their cookies and each other's company, Jay knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, he would always have Hailey by his side.
