Here we go. Next chapter. I had to ask a lot of baby advice from my brother, who is raising three boys with his wife. He was happy to share his stories. A little confused about why I needed advice, though.
A week later.
Charlie was waiting on the front steps of the palace manor with Harry squirming in her lap. Her servants and bodyguards, Razzle and Dazzle, were flying over their heads. They were keeping Harry's attention on them to keep him from getting bored. Her pet, Keykey, and Harry's cat were sitting on the railing of the steps, relaxing
The past few days had been the most challenging events Charlie had ever struggled through. When she first decided to adopt Harry, she expected it to be difficult. The only child she had ever been around was her fellow Hell-born cousins from the other rings. That had been centuries ago when she was just a child. But since Harry was already over a year old, Charlie figured maybe the worst moments would have been over.
She was wrong.
After that first feeding, it became obvious how much trouble raising an infant could be. Harry was too young to understand discipline, so he had a bad habit of putting things in his mouth that didn't belong there. Or it was biting Charlie or his pet cat, which Charlie had started calling Salem. Harry also had bad habits of being a picky eater. He only wanted sweet treats. He refused to eat certain vegetables, like peas, celery or brussel sprouts.
Then there was his curiosity of exploring the mansion. He couldn't quite yet walk, but he could crawl at speeds Charlie found impossible. Once, in his room, Charlie took her eyes off him for a second and turned to find the room empty and the door opened. She rushed out and caught Harry as he was hurrying halfway down the long hallway. There were also times he went missing, only to be brought back by Letzi, Razzle or Dazzle, or her even her father one time.
"Keep an eye this little runner, Charlie," he smiled as he handed a laughing Harry to her.
There also the odd moments when Harry would wake up crying in the middle of the night. Sometimes he was hungry, other times it was to be changed. One night Harry cried for an hour straight. Nothing Charlie did helped him calm down. Her dad was right: never disturb a sleeping baby.
Finally, there were the diapers. Mountains of diapers. Charlie was sure she lost her sense of smell after so many diaper changes.
But she tried not to think about that now. Today, was a playdate with Prince Stolas and his daughter Octavia. They were going to arrive around lunch time and spend the rest of the afternoon together. Charlie was also hoping to get some tips about raising Harry. She didn't exactly have a book on raising humans. There were books about raising newborn demons, but sadly humans were more fragile than hellspawn.
Suddenly, Razzle and Dazzle flew off towards the front gates. Charlie's eyes followed them and she spotted Stolas waiting beyond the steel bars. She got to her feet, placing Harry on her hip and walked to join him.
"Hello, Princess Charlotte!" Stolas called out joyfully. He too had his daughter on his hip along with diaper bag.
"Greetings, Prince Stolas," Charlie said. With a wave of her hand, the palace gates opened up and allowed Stolas to walk through. "And please, call me Charlie."
"If you wish."
"Ooowllly," said Harry as he pointed towards Stolas.
"Yes, Harry. Stolas is an owl."
Stolas chuckled and rocked Octavia on his hip. "And who's that, Via?"
Octavia pointed to Harry. "Plleeebiaaann."
"Oh, dear."
Charlie didn't know whether to laugh or not at little Octavia's words. "Where did that come from?" she asked.
"I'm afraid that may have come from her mother," Stolas said gloomily. "My Stella has…certain views on others who are not of certain families."
"Oh," Charlie said. She had met families like that. "Well, it doesn't matter. You two have just arrived for lunch."
"Delightful," said Stolas as he followed the princess through the manor. They decided to eat in the parlor where they first met. An imp servant brought a cart with trays of food for both the owl demon and princess. The toddlers were on the floor, eating only soft food. Mice bits for Octavia and warm chicken pieces for Harry. Both were watched over by Charlie's servants.
"So, how has the first week been?" asked Stolas.
"Rough," Charlie stated. "It's been a long few days discovering what Harry likes to eat, how to keep him occupied and out of trouble, and hoping he sleeps through the night. And of course, there are the diapers."
"I can imagine how difficult that must have been."
"Difficult and Nasty. And the first time I had to change Harry, my Father decided it was to momentous occasion and recorded it."
Earlier that week
"You can do this. You can do this," Charlie muttered to herself as she mentally prepared for her hardest test in being a mother.
"Poo," Harry muttered. He was lying on the changing table in his room. To him, this was just another day in the life of a baby.
"Yeah. Poo," said a defeated Charlie. She was expecting this but was still not prepared. Earlier, just as lunch was about to be served, a foul smell was wafting from Harry. The same smell she noticed the night before when Stolas changed Harry.
But just as she started unbuttoning his onesie, the door behind her opened.
"And here we are. Charlie's attempt at becoming a mom with her first changing," said a delighted Lucifer. In his hands was a video camera he created just for this occasion.
"Dad! What are you doing here?" Charlie complained.
"My daughter has become a new mom. It wouldn't be right to miss the special moments in a young mother's life. This joyous occasion needs to be immortalized."
"To embarrass me?"
"And your young son. I can show this to him when he gets older. Maybe at his birthday with all his friends watching."
"Dad…" Charlie groaned with annoyance.
"Heehheheh," Harry giggled at the goofy man holding a camera.
"Now let's get started," said Lucifer as he held the camera to his eye.
Knowing it was nearly impossible to change her father's mind about anything, Charlie gritted her teeth and got back to work unbuttoning Harry's clothes. He was just in his diaper now before she took a deep breath and tore the adhesive straps on the cloth. Unfurling it from Harry's legs, she saw a flash of brown before the smell assaulted her nose.
"Uueegghh. Satan's ballsack," Charlie groaned in disgust. The smell was worse than anything she had every smelled before. And she walked through the streets of Pentagram City after an Exorcism.
"Whoaho! Nasty!" Lucifer crowed in amusement. "Your face actually turned green. I didn't think that was possible."
Charlie wanted to tell her dad buzz off. However, she was afraid if she opened her mouth, she would vomit. Which would be weird since she never vomited before. She just covered her mouth with one arm while pulling the diaper away from Harry.
"Trashcan. It was made specifically for diapers," Lucifer offered. He was struggling not to laugh as his daughter fumbled putting the diaper in trashcan.
"Uuurrrghh," Charlie moaned again. She pulled a wiping cloth from beside the changing table and wiped Harry the same way she saw Stolas do it. Of course, he cheated and used magic. She had to do it by hand.
"Don't forget the powder," her dad added.
Charlie nodded and grabbed the baby powder next to the table. She shook the bottle over Harry's clean backside.
"Now the diaper."
Grabbing a clean diaper from the drawer, Charlie placed it under Harry. She was feeling confident now. The worst part was over, and she was just about finished.
However, it seemed like Harry wasn't quite finished.
"Aaagghh!" Charlie screamed as a part of Harry's anatomy turned into a water fountain and soaked Charlie's red jacket.
"Hahahahah!" Lucifer laughed.
"Heeheheh!" Harry laughed.
"Oh, dear," said Stolas.
"Dad didn't stop laughing until dinner time," Charlie said. It annoyed her how hilarious her dad had found the situation. It was something he wanted to share with everybody in the 7 rings.
"Do you need any help with Harry? I do have some Sinners in my employment who have experience raising children. Human and demon."
Charlie shook her head. "No. After that first day, raising Harry hasn't been too difficult. Just time consuming. All my attention has to be focused on him, so he doesn't get into mischief."
"I see."
"Do you have help watching your daughter?"
"I do," said Stolas as he finished off the last of his mice. "The imps of the Goetia Family have raised the children for centuries. I was no different. My father was only around for important events and I never remember seeing my mother."
"That's so sad," remarked Charlie.
"I suppose it is. However, I wanted to be involved in Octavia's life. My marriage was arranged specifically for creating an heir for the Goetia family. But the day my daughter hatched, I promised that I wasn't going to be like my father. I was going to be involved in my daughter's life. From changing diapers to rocking her to sleep."
"That's touching," smiled Charlie.
"Thank you."
The moment was broken as the children started giggling in unison. Razzle and Dazzle had taken ahold of Octavia and Harry's hands and were flying them high enough for their feet to just leave the floor. The demons flew in slow circles while the children laughed at the weightlessness.
"Ho, ho. How charming," laughed Stolas.
"Those two have been a big help," said Charlie.
The adults watched the kids for several minutes. While Charlie was watching, she couldn't help but feel proud. She didn't give birth to Harry, nor did she spend the first year of his life raising him. But for the week raising him, she was beginning to feel like a real mother.
"I have some information from his world," Stolas said.
"Really?" asked Charlie as she focused off the kids and onto him.
"Indeed. It seems that Magical Britain in celebration at the defeat of Tom Riddle, who also seems to go by the alias Voldemort. With Riddle vanquished, his followers have been apprehended or scattered to the winds. The tide is turning in wizarding war."
"I see. And Harry?"
"The wizarding world has mourned the loss of his parent's, James and Lily. And they are wondering where Harry is. It seems that he has been dubbed 'The Missing Savior'. Word has spread that he was the reason for Riddle's defeat."
"They're labeling a toddler as the savior who vanquished a dark lord?" asked Charlie.
"It seems so."
Charlie was silent for a moment. "Did you happen to find out when Harry would have to return?"
"I might have one. Apparently both his parents attended a magical school called Hogwarts. When a magical child is born, there a magical book and quill that will record his name and birth. When he turns 11, he will be accepted the following term to attend. It's my theory that he will have to return the mortal realm then."
"There are magical schools?"
"Indeed." Stolas clapped his hands in excitement. "It's all so fascinating. Students accepted there will be able to study Charms, Transfiguration, Potions, History, Defense against the Dark Arts and my personal favorites, Herbology and Astronomy. I wish I was able to attend when I was a lad."
Charlie, however, frowned. "So when he's 11 he has to return."
"It's just an educated guess, princess. It might be when he is older."
"What about 'the power the Dark Lord knows not'? Is it magic?"
"It's possible."
Charlie looked out the window that viewed Pentagram City. "Or could it be something here? In Hell?"
"It's possible as well. Prophecies are tricky things."
Afterwards, Charlie didn't say anything else. She just watched the children play.
Later that night, Charlie just finished giving Harry a bath and putting on a fresh diaper and onesie. She felt her heart break earlier when Stolas had to leave and both children started crying at the loss of a friend. Stolas promised to come back in a few days. He also promised Charlie that he would find a way for her to access news in the wizarding world. She wanted to know more about life in the mortal realm. Then maybe, she will be able to not only help Harry, but all Sinners.
She was rocking Harry, humming another lullaby. The song captured Harry's attention as she sung. Charlie felt like she could swim in those emerald eyes that were focused on hers.
"I wonder if I should call mom," she whispered. "It's been about two weeks. I wonder what her opinion would be she found out she became a grandmother overnight."
She was closer to her mother than her father. Even with her return, Lucifer had still stayed in his office most days. Charlie never went in there. In fact, the last time she had been there when she visited him while she was just a child. However, before she left, she would hardy see him at all. They talked more in the past week alone than the months before she moved out.
Charlie spotted Harry's eyes beginning to drop. She walked over to the crib and placed him gently on the mattress. She pulled a blanket over him while Salem leapt into the crib and settled beside him. She brushed Harry's hair, exposing the scar that made her scowl. A reminder of what Harry had lost.
"I wonder if I'm doing the right thing," she whispered to him. "Maybe dad was right. Maybe you were better off in the mortal realm. Hell isn't a very nice place to raise a baby. And with a prophecy hanging over your head, I'm wondering if I'm interfering with the ancient laws by raising you."
Harry didn't say anything. He just kept watching her as she stroked his hair.
"I wish I had some sign I'm doing the right thing," Charlie said. She stopped brushing his hair and stood up to leave. But she stopped when a tiny hand grabbed her finger. She gazed back down at Harry. "What is it, sweetie?"
"Mum."
Charlie froze. "What did you say?" she whispered.
Harry's eyes didn't stray. "Mum," he gurgled.
And with that, any doubt Charlie had was washed away with the happy tears pouring from her eyes.
I hope this story wasn't too sappy. I would like to hear ideas on how this story can progress. Right now, I only have one so I would like options.
