Chapter Six
Evelyn was the first one to greet Bonnie when she came home. She was still dry from the rain but she was wrapped in Reid's jacket. He had left her at the steps of the Danvers house with a hair ruffle and kiss on the forehead before he walked off. If she had to guess he had used his magic to get home.
"You're home earlier than Caleb," said her guardian. Evelyn sat in the chair closest to the foyer, a glass of booze in her hand. She offered Bonnie a smile and nodded for chair across from her. "Sit down dear, we have much to discuss."
Bonnie glanced at the chair. It looked comfy and while the jacket definitely helped with the cold, Bonnie wanted some tea. "Can I make some tea first?"
Evelyn nodded. "Go on, dear."
Bonnie didn't take too long. She returned to her spot with a cup of lemon and ginger tea. It warmed her belly as she took her first sip. Settling into the chair, the young witch met Evelyn's gaze.
"How are your studies?"
Bonnie fought down the winch but it had to have shown in her face. Evelyn's eyes was soft for a moment before her stone face returned. She had to have know what was on Bonnie's mind: that if her studies had been better, if she had practiced her craft more than Grams would have still been alive.
Evelyn only sipped her drink, setting it down on the table before she spoke again.
"I will help you with your craft while you're here," she held up a hand when Bonnie tried to speak. "I don't know why you decided to help vampires of all things, but I know you, Bonnie. You're a kind girl and your heart is always in the right place but your craft is weak."
Bonnie didn't fight the winch this time. It wasn't her fault. She hasn't known she was a witch until she lit up several candles in the Lockwood home. She had always known about the boys. They never hid who they were from her. It did sting that they knew of her powers though; had known for years.
"We also have something else to talk about," Evelyn continued. Her voice was low and she seemed to be approaching the topic with caution. Bonnie moved her mug of tea to the table.
"Before you do, I did have a question." She wasn't sure how to approach the question. The images flickered across her eyes, like an old movie reel. A sinister smile, pitch black eyes.
Bonnie looked Evelyn in the eyes. "Who is Chase?"
"Fiancée?" Kate blinked at her roommate as she paced along their apartment living room. Of the things she had expected to hear when Sarah came home in tears, none of them had been that Caleb and Bonnie were basically engaged. She had been ready to take a bat to Caleb's kneecaps when Sarah told her about their split, until she told her angered roommate that she had decided on the split.
Caleb needed to get his emotions in order. Because when she had asked him if he was in love with Bonnie, he couldn't answer. His face though looked like he just might be.
Either he didn't know he was falling for her or he was lying. And Sarah refused to be the other woman while he tried to get his shit together.
"Yes Kate," said blonde and ran a hand through her hair. "Fiancée."
Just saying it left a bad taste in her mouth. She and Caleb had been together for two whole years, and now he came out and told her he was engaged to Bonnie.
Kate scrunched her nose. "Okay but that's gross. Bonnie's only sixteen."
"He said he just found out, and he hasn't done a single thing to her since he found out."
Kate arched an eyebrow at her. "Okay but does he want to?"
Sarah stopped. She hadn't asked him that, though she remembered how sick he looked when she asked if he wanted Bonnie in any physical way.
"It isn't like that," he had said. "I just want to keep her safe."
But she was his fiancée. He was going to marry her one day. Sarah choked, a new wave of sobs rattling her.
She had hoped she would get married to Caleb, she had honestly hoped he would propose this year. They were going to be going on three years in a few weeks and now it was over because of a teenage girl.
God did Bonnie even know she was engaged?
Kate moved towards her, wrapping Sarah up in a hug.
Bonnie had settled into the rose garden, a warm cup of tea in her hands. She also had a blanket to keep her from the soft autumn chill. The rain had stopped and the clouds had cleared a few hours before. It was a little past midnight, but she hadn't been able to sleep. Her mind was still reeling.
Chase Collins had been apart of the Putnam family; the ones who had almost destroyed the Ipswich coven. He had blown into town to cause nothing but trouble and take Caleb's power for his own. In the end he had gotten it, and it had cost him his life.
Sarah had been his captive and she had felt every bit of her emotions once they had held hands. The fear of not knowing if Caleb would come. The pain at knowing she wouldn't see him again.
The love that was blooming in her chest.
Bonnie's fingers tightened around the mug. Years later and she was still that silly little girl hoping Caleb would look at her with the intention of being his girlfriend. It was probably why she had never really given an boys her own age any attention.
None of them compared to Caleb, which said a lot about how silly she was being.
Caleb was never going to see her as a woman, at least not one romantically.
Caleb was in a happy, loving relationship. Having the title of his betrothed meant nothing in the end.
She needed to bury her feelings for him. She needed to let him go.
"What are you doing out here?"
Bonnie sighed. It was like thinking of him brought him to her.
Green looked up into brown.
"We need to talk," Bonnie said. It was better to nip this in the bud.
If she didn't, her feelings would run wild.
