Chapter 6
.
After saving the peace talks the A-team returned to America, along with Amy Allen. Amy had possible information about the leak, and was willing to share it with Stockwell. BA was even willing to fly, given how important it was.
.
Stockwell: It's nice to meet you Ms Allen.
Amy: You too. I wanted to share what I found about the possible leak, the person who informed the Soviet and Israeli governments about Werner.
Stockwell: You're assuming that this person is an American?
Amy: I'm not 100% certain. I did find out one thing, in addition to Werner's war crimes, he is suspected to have raped at least six women in London.
Stockwell: Five of whom recanted, and one "disappeared."
Amy: Well it turns out that one of these women was placed for adoption soon after her birth, raised in the foster system, yet somehow has a trust fund. Enough that she didn't really have to worry about money. Whoever set up this trust fund, is very good at covering his tracks. But it's clearly someone with a lot of resources, connections, probably in all three governments.
Stockwell: You think it's this woman's father?
Amy: Yes. Whoever her father is, he wanted to protect his daughter, so much so he was even willing to break his country's laws and commit borderline treason to punish the man who raped her.
Hannibal: We'd be happy to stick around and help find this weak. I could understand why they did this, but it's still borderline treason, that leak should be plugged.
Stockwell: That will not be necessary Colonel. When I brought you and your team into this I told you it would be temporary, that after a certain number of missions, you would all be granted a full pardon. This recent operation, has brought a lot of publicity. The public is on your side, but it would make your ability to perform covert operations more difficult. And as you know, next month president Reagan leaves office, presidents are usually very generous with pardons and commutations in their final days. The president has instructed me to inform you, that you will now be pardoned. You're free to go. Thank you Colonel, for everything.
Hannibal: Thank you Stockwell, hope we never see you again.
Stockwell: You won't.
.
Stockwell left and the A-team rejoiced, after all this time they were finally free.
.
Murdoch: I was beginning to worry that we all died in Nam, that we were caught in some purgatory where we were always running, always surrounded by violence, which was all we knew.
BA: You've been watching too many Twilight Zone episodes fool. But yeah, I feared this day wouldn't come.
Frankie: And Face, this does solve our bet.
Face: Amy just implied that the woman was Stockwell's daughter, he could just as easily be protecting his source in the Soviet or Israeli governments. All of his reasons for finally giving us a pardon make complete sense.
Frankie: Yeah, which is exactly the kind of story he'd invent to protect himself.
Hannibal: I guess we'll never know, so your bet might just end in a draw.
Amy: So what now?
BA: I haven't been able to spend Christmas with my mother in almost 20 years, I'm going to fly to Chicago, and it'll probably be the last time I ever fly.
Murdoch: But Hannibal, you should still keep up your part and quit smoking. I mean you're basically paying big tobacco a fortune for the privilege of inhaling poison.
BA: For all the crazy stuff this fool has said, he is right about this.
Hannibal: Maybe you're right. I'd like to spend time with my nephew and his son, probably shouldn't smoke cigars around the baby.
Face: And I'd like to spend Christmas with my sister.
Frankie: And me with my father.
Amy: What about you Murdoch, any plans for Christmas?
Murdoch: Usually I spend it with my family, but the family's splitting up.
Amy: You could spend Christmas with me, I don't really have much of a family either.
Hannibal: I'm not sure we could call what we've been through together fun, but I'm glad we went through it together. It's been an honor to serve with all of you.
.
The team just silently nodded, then they went in their separate directions. They didn't know exactly what the future held, but they were certain of one thing, they were now all free to live their own lives as they saw fit.
