Chapter Two

"I'm going with her," Maya told the group, not waiting for a response. She closed the doors and reached for Andy's hand. "Hang on, Herrera. Please hang on."

It had taken 10 minutes to get to Grey-Sloan and in that time Andy had flatlined and Maya was forced to watch her friend be shocked and brought back to life. She tried holding in her tears but a few escaped.

"Andy, please wake up. Please. We can't live without you." Maya begged just as the aid car stopped. She jumped out of the aid car, helping to bring the gurney down when Hunt, Shepherd and a couple of residents came out.

"Bishop, I know you want to be with your friend but right now we need to get her to the OR to take care of these burns and any other injuries she may have," Hunt told her, and Maya was forced to watch as they rushed her off. She was stuck to the floor, a few feet into the ER when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked up and was surprised to see Ben and Carina there.

"Warren? What are you doing here?" Maya asked, shock evident on her face. "and why is Carina in brush gear?"

"I went to go help a pregnant woman trapped in a car when your wife forced her way into going so I made her dress properly if she was going out," Ben told her, and Maya looked concerned. "I'm sorry, Maya. She wanted to help, and I thought about how she could help me, and I just said yes." Before Maya could reply Carina came over.

"Before you say anything about the brush gear I need to tell you something," Carina told Maya, grabbing her hands. "I was so scared for you out there. I was so scared that you would end up here and be injured but I'm so glad you're safe." Maya tried to stop herself from tearing up as she was thinking about how Andy was here and in surgery right now, clinging to life. "I'm just so glad you're okay so that I'm not left alone to take care of two tiny babies," Carina said, and Maya's face turned to one of shock.

"Two?" Maya managed to whisper, and Carina nodded. "you're pregnant?"

"I'm pregnant," Carina said, and Maya pulled her wife into a kiss, not caring that they were surrounded by people in the ER. Maya pulled back and pulled Carina into her arms. When they pulled apart Maya and Carina were smiling when Ben realized that Maya was the only one on the team there.

"Hey Bishop, where's the rest of the team?" Maya snapped out of the happy bubble she was in, and her eyes filled with tears, being brought back to why she was at the hospital to begin with.

"I…Um." Maya stumbled. "Captain…" a tear fell from Maya's eye, surprising both Carina and Ben.

"What happened?" Ben asked, worry growing inside of him.

Maya took a deep breath and tried to keep her voice steady. "We were under fire shelters and when we were talking Andy's radio cut out. We kept trying to get her to answer but she didn't." Maya paused to wipe the tear off her cheek. "It was like five minutes later when we were safe to get up." Maya took a shaky breath in before letting it out a few seconds later. "We got up and saw that Andy's bag was burned and her fire shelter was nearby. We looked around for Andy and saw her 20 feet away." Maya had to pause again when more tears made their way down her cheeks. "We found her with her brush gear burned in a bunch of areas and when we turned her onto her back we saw burns on her chin, forehead and neck and as she was being brought here." Maya had to stop as a sob broke free and Carina pulled her into her arms. "She flatlined." Maya managed to get out while in Carina's embrace and both Carina and Ben looked at each other, fear in their eyes. Maya pulled back and wiped her cheeks. "As soon as we got here they rushed her off to surgery. Everyone else is on their way here too." Maya finished and leaned into Carina's embrace again.

It was silent between the three of them, all of them forgetting about the pregnancy momentarily while they walked numbly to the waiting room and sat down. Maya and Carina sitting beside each other while Ben sat a few chairs away from them.

They had been sitting in silence for 10 minutes when they heard footsteps. Maya looked up to see the rest of the team, fear apparent on all their faces and Maya had to look away. She knew exactly how they were feeling and before she could stop herself she blurted out

"She flatlined on the way here." Everyone looked at Maya. "We got her back just before we arrived. They rushed her to the OR as soon as we unloaded her." Maya told them and watched as Vic leaned into Travis and a couple of tears fell. She watched as Theo and Robert slumped in their chairs. Worry clear on their faces.

Everyone was sitting in silence. No one knew what to say. Their captain was fighting for her life, and they had no control over what was happening. They hated it. They just wanted, no, needed, Andrea Herrera to be okay.
