Chapter two: The Declaration of the Fates
SALLY
The farmers market was bustling with commotion. There were stands lined up next to each other. It slightly looked like a wall. I continued to transverse through lanes of stands. Some filled with fruit and vegetables. Others packed with different types of food.
Just then, a glint of light made me shield my eyes. I moved enough for the shine to fad I looked to see what was the cause.
I narrowed my eyes to see it was a mirror that was up for sale. Without much thought, I walked toward it. My reflection emerged.
I stared at the mirror half surveying my image, and half zoning out. I soon realized that I didn't quite look like myself.
I looked… younger?
I was happy with the surprise but don't you think that's strange?
Suddenly, something caught my eye. It looked like a monster.
It had the bottom half of a snake and the top half of a lizard. However, its top half still looked humanoid.
I turned around to look at it, the monster was twenty-five feet away.
It sniffed the air as if it was looking for the source of a smell.
Its head snapped to me, eyes bulged. I flinched at the stare and turned around. I wouldn't have dared to look back if it hadn't begun to pursue me.
After I realized it was running, or… slithering to me, it sprinted out of there and into the jungle of people, unaware this was happening.
I got to a clearing where there was much more space.
I looked back at the monster and it had a devious face, that was before it lunged at me with its mouth showing its hungry teeth.
I outpaced the attack and my brain started to go haywire. Why is that even attacking me?! I thought monsters don't like the taste of mortals! And why was it trying to eat me specifically?!
My body had already lost half its stamina. I wouldn't be able to continue running for much longer.
I ran past a water fountain and then out of the blue, a jet of water came at the monster.
The monster dropped and it was pushed back several feet.
Out of curiosity, I looked toward the fountain. Something rose to the surface of the water. I knew I wouldn't have much time to check out what was there.
I ran to what it was, what appeared to be a message of seaweed.
Hey Sally! I saw you were in some trouble and wanted to help. Why was that thing even chasing you? Besides that, take the Olympian Silver Makhaira (1) and Shield. I hope that helps you kill whatever that thing is.
-Poseidon
A weapon and shield spawned before me.
It was a Makhaira. It was jittering and changing forms from a two-foot long-bladed knife to a three-foot (and a half) long-bladed sword.
It looked indecisive, just constantly changing forms.
I wouldn't it just stay as a long-bladed knife or a-
From the thought, the Makhaira turned into a long long-bladed knife.
Oh, uh that works. I said mentally.
With the element of surprise, the monster lunged at me.
I quickly ducked under the attack, much to the monster's frustration.
My eyes were wide with shock and fear, it almost bit my head off!
The Makhaira! The shield! Grab it! My guts told me.
My hands frantically grabbed the items and put them in a position to defend myself.
In my opinion, I didn't have enough training to fight an actual monster but Percy did train me when he had nothing to do and when he was bored.
Turns out that being trained by the swordsman of the millennia gives you a lot of skill to use in a real situation.
I raised the shield in a defensive stance and deflected the thrash of its claws. The monster was taken back for a second but that was all the hesitation needed so I could jab the Makhaira into the monster.
The creature shrieked, which made me think what were the people around us seeing?
Thank the gods the mist exists.
I cleared my head and put myself back in the fight. The stab wound didn't go all the way, thus the monster still survived.
It lashed out at me causing a claw mark on my arm. I grunted, the pain pulsing in my head.
Little did I know, what leaked from the bloody wound came a fluid that only flows through gods.
I retaliated by slamming my shield into the monster's torso.
The monster stumbled back, losing its balance.
It hissed with hate.
The monster looked toward my wound and back at me.
The creature thought this would be an easy meal.
Then a gassy purple-green color spewed out of its mouth, quickly engulfing my surroundings. It looked like poison.
At a last-ditch attempt, I slashed my Makhaira at the monster.
The blade grazed the monster's body before it retreated into the crowd.
Finally… it's gone. My brain said. I felt dazed. I was falling around on every step. When I started to cough, that was when I blacked out.
THUMP
Sally's body fell to the floor. A pool of blood formed from the large claw wound.
-Time Skip-
My heart was pounding in my head, and I had a terrible headache. "Augh…" I groaned. I barely opened my eyes to realize that was even hard to do. Though with time I was gradually being able to open my eyes more and more.
My vision cleared and I saw I was in a hospital room.
Beep, beep, tik tok. Beep, beep, tick tock. Sounded the Machines and clock.
I tried to sit up but my body felt paralyzed.
I lifted my right hand so I could rub my eyes. Except I couldn't. I hardly got it off the bed sheets.
I winced, pain rising into my hand.
I looked toward my right arm, and gasped. Half of my arm was bandaged but that wasn't why I gasped. There were stains of golden blood, which meant that it was Ichor.
I couldn't figure out why that was there because I started to pass out.
-In the dream-
I was sitting on the floor in the middle of a dark circular temple. There were three statues. The first one was a statue of a young girl. It was on the left. The second one was a statue of a middle-aged woman. It was in the middle. The third and final statue was an old woman, it was on the right.
"Where am I?" I muttered to myself.
All three statues gained life and color. "Oh Sally, you are in our temple. Beneath the land of New Rome." The young girl said. "I- uh who are you?" I asked, shocked.
"We are the Fates, I am the Fate that weaves the threads which determine life." The middle-aged woman said. Before I could speak again the older woman said, "I am the Fate that cuts the thread which ends life."
"Wh-" I was interrupted by the young girl, "I am the Fate that determines when and whose life begins. I am the Fate of Beginnings." She said. "We are the Fates." They said in unison, their voices echoed throughout the temple.
"Why am I here?" I questioned. "Oh, this one asks many questions. Sally, we are here to make our declarations." The Fate of Endings said. "Then why do you need me here?" I inquired.
"It seems you are right, sister. This one indeed asks too many questions. Oh Jackson, your family has been blessed by us so many times (2). It seems your son isn't the only one we're blessing. The declarations we have today are intertwined with you." The Fate of continuation said.
In unison, they said, "All hail Sally Jackson! Mother to all! Guardian and Mother to all demigods. All hail Sally Jackson! Goddess of Parenthood. Goddess of Protection. Goddess of cooking. Goddess of gentility and cordiality. All Hail Sally Jackson!"
A spinning coin-shaped object appeared.
Once it slowed down to a stop it showed a symbol. A Makhaira crossed over a shield. "The Symbol of Sally Jackson." The Fate of Beginnings said satisfiedly.
The Fate of Beginnings outstretched her hand, the coin levitated toward her hand and dropped in it. The Fate of Beginnings examined the coin and rubbed it, polishing away whatever dirt that might have been there.
She raised her head to me and tossed the coin. When I caught it I felt… different. A bad kind of different. Like as if someone took something away from me.
The Fate of continuation smirked and said, "Feel different? I don't care. Did you really think we would let a mortal become one of us so easily? Heracles had to go through oh so many trials to reach godhood. Dionysus had to be worthy enough to become a god comparable to an Olympian and now you will go through the same struggle to become worthy of goddesshood. That coin will never leave you until you throw it in the Well of End. Only those worthy will find it. This is not an option, Sally."
"Why do this? For your amusement?" I said. "Maybe, Maybe not. When the Law of Order calls, we answer. We are the right hand of the Authorities of Law, Lady End, Lord Order, and Lady Chaos. We are just doing their bidding." The Fate of Endings said.
"The coin will reveal your missions to reach Ascension. But don't worry we won't leave you without any divine power. You have the abilities of a demigod. Your authority will be over your possibly future domains." The Fate of Beginnings reassured me half-heartedly.
"Goodbye Sally. We expect much from you." They told me in unison.
SALLY
I woke up sweating. The interaction of the Fates was eerie. I was still in the hospital, I turned to a desk next to my bed and saw the coin with my now insignia on it. I sighed. So it was real. I concluded in my head.
I looked at my wound, the plaster looked like it had been switched out for a new one. This one had small spots where it had been stained red.
There was a knock on the door, then came a hospital employee with a tall cardboard box. "This is for you. The police used it to try to find whoever attacked you. That was very brave of you to stand up and fight." She complimented. "Thank you." I said.
The employee plopped the box next to me and left. I opened the box to see the Makhaira and Shield I used to fight the monster. I wonder what they thought the Makhaira and Shield were. I wondered.
I inspected the items, it was only then I started to appreciate the craftsmanship of them. The Shield was beautiful. It had an intricate design of the sun rising over the sea. The sun rising was a symbol of new beginnings. Pretty ironic since my life has just been given a new path.
The Makhaira had little symbols at the guard and butt of it. But nothing to significant to mention. Though it was just as beautiful the shield. I put the weapons back in the box and exhaled mildly loud.
There was another knock at the door and like last time it was a hospital employee. This time they had a cart with a plate of food on it.
I concentrated on the employee and realized this employee had two children. I didn't know how I knew that but the most likely explanation was because of the connection to my future domains and present control of them as a new demigoddess.
"Hi! How are you? I just got you some food for lunch. This is fettuccine alfredo. I hope you enjoy it." He smiled sincerely.
The food had some artificial ingredients. I knew that because like said earlier, the control over my domains.
While I ate my meal in silence, I thought of the recent events of my hectic life.
-End of Chapter-
