Six Months before Kagome goes into the Past

"What is this?" Tyler smiled at Grandpa Higarashi, the man's warmth always filled his heart. In his hand was a book, small like a dictionary with think pages and a leather bound front. Opening it up, he saw fuzzy glyphs on it's pages, Kanji possibly but it was unclear.

The man smiled back, peaceful as always. "It is a spell book, I know you are interested in the magics of the past. You love your myths and legends, It's part of why I hired you a month ago."

That had been a hard time for Tyler, an orphan left alone in a foreign country, even in college as he was life was still a struggle. He was a generous employer, and kind soul demanding he call him Grandpa. He stayed in one of Grandpa's various structures on his shrine as part of his time in Japan. He helped clean, reorganize and study things with Grandpa, something that thrilled the older man given that his grandchildren had no interest in the old ways, in the past.

But Tyler did, boy did he.

Even before he entered College, he studied all he could in local libraries before they kicked him out. Grandpa, loving this part of him, allowed him to study with him. He learned a lot, and they both enjoyed the other's enthusiasm.

"Why are you giving me this? It has to be priceless."

Grandpa sighed. "My grandchildren hold no desire to learn of the past. You do. It really is that simple. I will not see my dreams go to waste." He placed the book peacefully in Tyler's hands. "I want you to learn from this, and use it as a stepping stone in your path to greatness."

Teary eyed, Tyler nodded. "I would love that..."

"Good, now, time to close up. We have an early start tomorrow."

Soon, on his cot in his own mini apartment set up by Grandpa, Tyler set to translating the Spellbook. Running his fingers along the pages, he growled after an hour. "Why is this so fuzzy, there is no damage, it is practically perfect." And then it happened, he slit his finger against the book's edge, cutting a thin stream. "Ow!" He flinched, blood flying up and onto the damn book. "NO!" He almost shouted...

Only... only the book seemed to drink the blood up, and a wave of warm green light rippled out of the blood, into the book and it's pages. The kanji all glowed a deep green before fading. Even as it did, he could still feel the warmth in the pages sinking into his body.

"Wait, I can read this now... " The first thing written was a warning. "Magic is measured in your intent, in your knowing and the power you have... call out the essence within, and summon a change." Holding his hand out, he focused hard, on the warmth. "Hi!" He whispered the Japanese word for Fire, and before he knew it, an ever curling bunch of fire danced in his palm...

"What did I just do... this is amazing. I can't show Grandpa this yet, not until I am sure... but once I am sure... he will love this." He frowned. "I have Kendo three times a week...and I work here, but that still leaves me hours to train. I will become great with this, I just know it."
