Chapter 4
Of Tours and Tests
It was now lunchtime in Hexside and Luz was eating with Willow and her friend Augustus Porter or as Luz called him Gus.
He seemed to like the nickname.
Gus is a young boy, noticeably shorter than Luz, Amity and Willow, with brown skin and dark brown hair with lighter shades. His upper lip is curved, similar to Luz's. Like all the witches and demons on the Boiling Isles, he has pointy ears. His eyes are dark blue.
He wears a gray tunic with a dark gray belt, cowl, and boots. As he is part of the illusion track, the color of his sleeves and leggings are a light blue.
After the initial excitement of meeting a real human Gus began to ask questions. Those questions including human having gills (no they did not have those) or using Braces to store food (Gross).
She made sure that Gus's questions were answered.
As Luz eats her Peanut Boil and Goreberry jelly sandwich (which turns out to be one of the few BI foods she can eat). She reads the Infamous book.
She was shocked at how much this Bright Person got right.
The Package, How Cole got his powers, the other two Conduits Cole fought, Trish's death and Kesler being a Cole from a bad future.
Unless she was from Empire City and survived both The Beast and the RFI there was no way she would have known that.
It was then Gus asked his next question.
"Hey Luz, are Conduits real? I've read about them but I along with the rest of the HAS (Human Appreciation Society) are skeptical about them since the only information we have is from the Infamous Books." Gus said.
"Ok that's fair Gus." Luz said as she looks around and seeing the room filled with Witchlings.
"I'll tell you but after lunch alright Gus." Luz said as Gus nods.
"Alright then let's eat and then you'll tell us." Willow said.
Soon everyone ate lunch and after leaving Luz then showed them her powers.
"Whoa!" Gus said as he sees the floating ball of water.
"Goodness… you're a Conduit aren't you Luz." Willow said as she realizes what Luz was.
Luz nodded.
"Yeah I am. Up until a few years ago Conduits weren't treated right." Luz said as she rubbed her arm.
She remembered the mobs from the first days.
Willow gave her a hug and told her that it was ok.
"Wow this is getting kind of heavy how about we head to class." Gus said.
"Oh right I was showing Luz the different classes of Hexside." Willow said.
"So it's true you're finally going to the Plant Track." Gus said happy for his friend.
"Yeah still can't believe it took me this long." Willow said.
Luz chuckled a bit.
"Thanks guys so which class is next?" Luz asked.
"It's Illusions. I can get you guys there since it's almost time for class anyway." Gus said.
At that moment the bell screamed.
"Lead the way Gus." Luz said.
Illusion Class
"Welcome to the Illusion Class where Showmanship is a must." Gus said as he made multiple copies of himself.
"Calm down Mr. Porter." A male voice said.
The Witch who spoke was as tall one probably a couple inches over Eda. If Luz was guessing. They wear a standard teachers robe. Their head was shaved, in place of hair was an intricate tattoo. Artistic depictions of cogs and gears that actually moved in a rhythmic sequence brought attention to any uninitiated passerby. They turn around and survey their students with keen lavender eyes.
"Wait, are those cogs moving?" Luz said.
"Indeed they are Miss Noceda." The professor said with a small smile.
"I am so getting a magic tattoo when I'm older." Luz said.
The professor chuckled.
"I am Professor Liraz and I am here to teach you about Illusions." Liraz said as they made a spell circle.
As they made the spell circle Luz noticed something in it. Luz quickly took a photo of it.
Sure enough it was a new Glyph.
The Glyph resembled an eye with an X on it. Like it was being crossed out.
"What tha… no way." Luz said as she takes out her notepad.
After finishing it she asked the professor.
"Ah Professor Liraz I think I found another Glyph." Luz said as she drew the Glyph.
Soon excitement buzzed in the air as the students stopped what they were doing and looked at Luz.
"May I ask where you found it?" Liraz asked.
"I found it in your Spell Circle Professor Liraz." Luz said.
"How odd perhaps the Titan is with you?" Liraz said with a chuckled.
"What does the Glyph do Luz?" Gus said.
"Are you going to use it Luz?" Willow said.
"Well there's only one way to find out?" Luz said as she used the Glyph.
There was a flash a light and instead of Luz it was a young man a man Luz knew well.
Professor Liraz made the illusion of a mirror and Luz saw it.
"The Hell I turned into Delsin." Luz said in Delsin's voice.
Luz now in Delsin's appearance consists of bright denim blue jeans, a red beanie, a denim vest, a white hoodie, and a red flannel shirt.
Soon the entire class (Gus included) was poking and prodding Luz.
The Professor was explaining how Luz did an advanced Illusion since it combines both optical and auditory illusions which are very difficult.
Soon enough Luz turned back to normal and thanked Professor Liraz for their time.
After saying good bye to Gus the two girls were on their way to the next class.
"So what Class are we going now?" Luz said.
"Hmmm… well-." Willow said before she was interrupted by Luz's groaning.
"Oh hell I must have eaten something bad?" Luz said as she clutches her stomach.
"It can't be the sandwich you ate or the Smilk that you drank." Willow said as she was thinking of what might have caused Luz's pain.
"Um Smilk?" Luz asked.
"Oh that's Spider Milk, why?" Willow asked.
"Fuck that would explain it. Willow I'm lactose intolerant meaning I can't have milk or cheese." Luz said.
Willow's eyes went wide.
"Oh crap um, ok bathroom first then Healing Class." Willow said as she picks up Luz and runs towards the bathroom.
"Um Healing class?" Luz asked.
"It doubles as the nurse's office." Willow said.
Healing Class
After a trip to the bathroom Luz and Willow entered the classroom where they saw a three eyed (of a purple color) The Witch with a head of teal wool and black ram horns on her head. She is wearing what looks like a nurse's outfit.
She saw how Luz looked.
"Oh dear, come here quickly!" The Witch said.
They did so.
"Now tell me young one what happened?" The Witch said.
"I'm Lactose Intolerant and I drank Spider Milk." Luz said.
The Witch's brow furrowed.
"Now young one if yo-." The Witch started to say until she saw Luz's ears.
Luz saw the Witch's reaction.
"Yeah I'm human I didn't know that Spider Milk counted or the fact that Spiders can make milk here." Luz said.
The Witch nods.
"Alright then just let me get some medicine and you'll be on your feet in no time. Oh where are my manners I'm Basil She/Her." The now named Basil said as she gives her pronouns.
"Luz Noceda, She/Her." Luz said as she does the same.
"Now then I don't have classes right now so I can treat you just let me do a scanning spell." Basil said.
She does so and let out a tiny gasp.
"Miss Park if you can leave the room for a few minutes." Basil asked.
Willow nodded.
Basil looked at Luz. Luz in turned nodded.
She took off her hoodie and shirt to reveal her scars.
"Oh good gracious. How old are they?" Basil asked referring to the scars.
"There 6 years old." Luz said.
"Titan above and below, do you feel any discomfort or pain?" Basil asked.
Luz said no and more medical related questions popped up. This ended with Basil giving Luz a Healer's note to a colleague of hers.
Luz thanked her and Basil tells her that they should head to the next class.
Luz nods.
Soon the two do as such.
Because the next class was Beastkeeping Class.
Beastkeeping Class
This time the two of them were outside where they see some stables and a group of students.
"Oh we just arrived at class." Willow said.
"Oh cool let's see what the fuss was about." Luz said.
Soon they see the professor.
Along with their teacher who looked like a Minotaur who was wearing clothes that looked something a farmer or rancher would use.
His black fur glistened on the light of the sun and orange eyes scanned the class.
"Alright then class today will be learning about Demigryphs." The Minotaur said.
"Demigryphs, Professor Swifthoof?" A student asked.
"Yes the wilder and wingless cousin of the Gryphon. These guys are powerful and fast predators. Today is a special day because the Vice-head of the Beastkeeping Coven have donated a young one for today's class." Swifthoof said.
"Huh I bet Viney is weeping as she's missing this." One student said.
"Ha! That's what she gets for mixing magic." Another student said.
"Anyway I'll be releasing the beast. So be careful." Swifthoof said.
Soon Professor Swifthoof released the beast which looks like the gryphon she saw when she came to the Boiling Isles. Only with no wings and was a lot bigger and wilder.
Luz had a feeling that this was a bad idea.
And like magic the Demigryph broke free and rampaging the field. Charging at the students and… killed a student.
"Shit! Willow go get help! I'll handle birdbrain!" Luz ordered as Willow runs off.
Luz fired a Water Blast at the overgrown bird.
"Hey! You overgrown combo bucket meal! Over here!" Luz shouted leading the Demigryph away from another student.
The Demigryph charged at Luz only for her to dodge.
But the talons of the Demigryph hurt her causing Luz to bleed a bit but Luz and fire another shot.
This continued for a bit until she heard a voice calling out to her.
"Hey Human!" Luz turns to try and find the voice and she did.
The source of the voice has brown hair with four wefted bangs and a messy bun held together by a dark orange spiked hair tie. She has pointed ears, similar to the other witches of the Boiling Isles. She has green eyes with one lash on the top and one lash on the bottom.
She wears a similar cowl to other students. However, hers is patterned, ripped, and held together by a large thumbtack. She has a fishhook earring on one ear. She wears a gray tunic, and initially wore lighter gray sleeves and leggings while in the detention track. Her skirt is ripped on the side and tied together.
"Huh how are you?!" Luz started to say but was interrupted.
"Loud noises Demigryphs hate loud noises!" The Witch girl said.
Luz Mentally thanked her as she prepared a Bubble Bomb.
"Thanks young Witch girl." Luz said.
Luz tosses the bubble and when it popped it disorientated the Demigryph Luz charged in and killed the thing with her sword.
Upon seeing the creature dying Luz slumped down.
"God damn that was rough." Luz said as Principal Bump appeared.
Upon seeing Luz and her wound he called for a healer.
Sometime later
Basil had just finished patching Luz up while Bump had just called the parents of the young Witchling. When Bump demanded an explanation Swifthoof told him what had happened.
"ARE YOU ABSOLUTELY INSANE!" Bump shouted.
The reason for the shouting match was simple. Demigryphs are untamable monsters that either should be left alone or killed on site. Which means it's illegal to keep one in captivity.
Thankfully Bump told Swifthoof that he wouldn't be fired but he would have to pay for the Witchling funeral.
Swifthoof solemnly nodded as he dismissed the class.
Bump then turns to Luz.
"Ah Miss Noceda I truly apologize for this." Bump said.
"It's no problem Principal Bump I just wished that student didn't have to die." Luz said.
"I know I wish so as well. By the way how did you know that Demigryphs have sensitive hearing?" Bump asked.
"Oh a Witch in a portal told me about that." Luz said.
At that he asked about said Witch. Luz then told Bump what she saw and then she asked Bump to thank her.
"I see I know that I'll make sure to pass your thanks. Oh by the way if you happen to know an Edalyn Clawthorne could give her this." Bump said as he gives her a Blast Core.
Luz surprised by this she puts away the Blast Core.
"I'll do so Principal Bump. Can Willow and I continue with the Tour?" Luz asked.
This shocks Bump but soon shakes it off.
"Of course Miss Noceda." Miss Park if you could. Bump said.
"Yes Principal Bump." Willow said.
"So it's off to the next Class Willow?" Luz said wanting to forget about the students death.
Willow nods and went on their way.
Bump then turns to one of the janitors and tells them to send the Demigryph to the Owl House.
Hallway
"Hey Willow are you ok?" Luz asked.
"I'm fine Luz though I should be the one asking you that?" Willow said.
Luz looked at with a raised eyebrow.
"What do you mean Willow?" Luz asked.
"Luz from what Emperor Belos says the Human is a realm of peace and death doesn't happened often as in the Boiling Isles." Willow said.
"(Unless you're a Conduit)." Luz said.
"So how often do people die?" Luz asked.
"It happens often." Willow said in a tone that her mama would use if a decision was final.
"So what's the next class?" Luz asked.
"It's the Bard Class." Willow said.
Bard Class
This time the classroom is in an auditorium and various students playing instruments.
Luz was bopping to the beat while Willow smiles.
"Alright students we must make sure to do well." The Bard Professor said.
It was then that he noticed Willow and Luz.
"Ah! Welcome lovelies I'm Mx. Alastor and I welcome you to the Bard Class." The Now named Alastor said.
is a Witch with red hair, yellow eyes, he wears clothes like that of a conductor.
"Hello Professor Alastor. I'm Luz Noceda." Luz said.
"Ah yes I heard about you. So I have to ask? What instrument you play?" Alastor asked.
"Oh um I don't really play anything but I'm willing to learn." Luz said.
With a smile they soon allowed Luz to take a look.
As Luz looks and tries the instruments. Up until now none of them clicked.
Until she found a violin and for some reason it felt right.
Luz soon plays it and she does so well. After playing Luz heard applause.
She turns to see Willow and the students clapping and Mx. Alastor standing still.
"You if it weren't for the fact that Bump told me you were human I would have thought that you were the child of Edalyn Clawthrone and Raine Whispers." Alastor said.
Luz chuckled at that. Soon it was time to go to the Plant Track and Willow's test. She was about to give back the violin but Alastor told her to keep it as he has over ten thousand of those.
Soon they were off to the Plant Track and Willow's test.
Plant Class
When the both of arrived they or rather Willow was greeted by Professor Liefstrum as he took them to the greenhouse area.
Liefstrum was a Witch with green hair and eyes, cloven hoofs and two small wings. He was wearing gardener's clothes.
"Oh Miss Noceda how's the tour?" Liefstrum asked.
"Ah right I mean besides the Demigryph its going well." Luz said.
Now then since Willow is here you watch her go to the Plant Track and be happy again. Liefstrum said with a grin.
Willow looked nervous but Luz gave her a smile.
"You can do it Willow." Luz said.
Willow takes a deep breath and takes out the seed pod Luz had given her.
She closes her eye and upon opening them they were green.
Meanwhile with Amity and Boscha
The girls were chatting up as they talk about random things.
"I heard that the coven guards took down the wall painting. It was smart of you to take a picture and upload it to Penstagarm." Boscha said.
"Yeah I hope I can meet the artist." Amity said.
At that moment a mass of Briar vines appeared out of nowhere.
"The hell these things came from!" Boscha said.
Amity is thinking that as well.
With Willow and Luz
Briar vines were everywhere as Willow casted her spell. The results show themselves.
Heh heh oops. Willow said.
Liefstrum and the class were silent. Until Liefstrum broke it.
"I know that Bump usually does this but Welcome to the Plant Track Miss Park." Liefstrum said as he changes Willow's sleeves and pants from pink to green.
"That was awesome Willow. I knew you can do it." Luz said.
"Thank you Luz." Willow said.
Luz smiles at her new friend's success.
In her mind the image had changed.
The Purple Luz was now face to face with the golden Luz.
The former held on to her staff as if she was to attack while the latter had a loose grip on her sword while backing away.
Like last time a word kept repeating.
That word was.
Protester
"Thank you so much Luz. Say do you want my Scroll number?" Willow asked.
Luz nods and the both of them exchange numbers. Soon she says her good byes as she goes back to the Owl House.
As she leaves her Scroll rings.
It was Eda calling.
Luz answers the call.
"Hey Eda what's up?" Luz said.
"Kid get back here now! Your mom is here along with Vee." Eda said.
"On my way." Luz said.
The Owl House
When Luz gets back to the Owl House and sees her mama along with Masha and the head cheerleader Clara Feu with fire on her fingertips.
"Mama what happened?" Luz said.
"A lot Noceda and I mean a lot." Masha said.
