Erin Lindsay was driving the truck through the bustling streets of Chicago, with Jay Halstead sitting in the passenger seat. Jay leaned back casually, a playful smile on his face as he watched Erin handle the vehicle with ease.
"You know, Lindsay, I think you missed your calling. You could've been a race car driver," Jay teased.
Erin laughed, glancing at him briefly. "Oh, really? And what makes you say that?"
"The way you handle this truck. It's impressive," Jay said with a wink.
"Well, I had a good teacher," Erin replied, smirking.
They shared a moment, their eyes locking briefly before Erin turned her attention back to the road. Jay continued, "So, what are we doing after this? Dinner? A movie? Or maybe just more of your amazing driving?"
Grinning, Erin responded, "How about all of the above?"
Suddenly, Jay's expression changed as he spotted something ahead. "Erin, stop the truck!" he shouted.
Confused, Erin asked, "What? Why?"
"Stop the truck, now!" Jay urged.
Erin slammed on the brakes, bringing the truck to a screeching halt. They both looked ahead and saw a little girl standing in the middle of the road, looking lost and scared.
"Oh my God…" Erin whispered.
Jay was already unbuckling his seatbelt. "Stay here, I'll get her," he said, jumping out of the truck and running towards the girl. Erin watched anxiously from the driver's seat.
Jay reached the little girl, who looked up at him with wide, tear-filled eyes. He knelt down to her level, speaking gently. "Hey there, are you okay? Where are your parents?"
The girl shook her head, unable to speak through her sobs. Erin, now out of the truck, walked towards them and asked softly, "Is she alright?"
Jay nodded. "I think she's just scared." Turning back to the girl, he asked, "What's your name?"
"Lily," the girl sniffled.
"Hi, Lily. I'm Erin, and this is Jay. We're police officers. Do you know where you live?" Erin asked.
Lily shook her head again, looking even more lost. Erin and Jay exchanged a concerned look.
"We should call it in, get some backup to help find her parents," Jay suggested.
"Good idea," Erin agreed. She turned to Lily and said, "How about we take you somewhere safe while we figure this out, okay?"
Lily nodded, still holding onto Jay's hand tightly. Jay lifted her up gently and carried her back to the truck, with Erin following closely behind.
"You drive, I'll stay with her in the back," Jay said to Erin as they reached the truck.
"Got it," Erin replied.
They got back into the truck, Erin behind the wheel and Jay in the backseat with Lily. Erin started the engine and drove off, her eyes flicking to the rearview mirror to check on them.
"We'll find your parents, Lily. Don't worry," Erin said softly.
Jay gave Lily a reassuring smile, holding her close as they drove through the city, determined to reunite her with her family.
Lily had fallen asleep in the backseat, her small body curled up against Jay. Erin drove through the quiet streets, following the address they had managed to get from dispatch. Finally, they pulled up outside a modest house.
Erin turned off the engine and looked back at Jay. "We're here. Should we wake her?"
Jay shook his head. "Let's get her parents out here to pick her up. It'll be less scary for her."
Erin nodded in agreement. Jay gently shifted Lily to a more comfortable position and then stepped out of the truck. He walked up to the front door and knocked firmly. There was no response. He knocked again, louder this time.
As he waited, Jay noticed something on the doorframe. His heart skipped a beat when he realized it was a bloodstain. Instinctively, he reached for his gun and radio.
"Erin, we've got a situation," he called out quietly, his voice tense.
Erin immediately got out of the truck, her hand moving to her own weapon. "What is it?"
Jay pointed to the bloodstains. "Something's not right. I'm going in."
Erin nodded, her expression serious. "I'll cover you."
Jay took a deep breath and pushed the door open, his gun drawn. The house was eerily silent, and the faint smell of blood hung in the air. He moved cautiously, his senses on high alert, ready for anything.
Jay moved through the house with caution, his gun at the ready. The living room was empty, but the signs of a struggle were evident—overturned furniture, broken glass, and more bloodstains leading down the hallway. He signaled to Erin, who followed closely behind, her own weapon drawn.
They reached a closed door at the end of the hallway. Jay motioned for Erin to stay back as he slowly turned the knob and pushed the door open. Inside, they found a horrifying scene. A man and a woman lay on the floor, both with gunshot wounds, clearly deceased. The room was silent except for the faint hum of the air conditioning.
Jay's heart sank. He holstered his gun and approached the bodies, checking for any signs of life, but it was clear they were gone. He turned to Erin, his expression grim. "They're dead."
Erin's face tightened with resolve. "We need to secure the scene and call it in. This just became a homicide investigation."
Jay nodded, pulling out his radio. "This is Detective Halstead. We have two deceased with gunshot wounds at the location. Requesting immediate backup and forensics."
Erin kept watch, her eyes scanning the room for any further threats. "We need to get Lily out of here. She doesn't need to see this."
Jay agreed. "I'll stay here and secure the scene. You take her and wait for backup."
Erin nodded and quickly made her way back to the truck. She gently woke Lily, who looked up at her with sleepy eyes. "Lily, sweetie, we need to go somewhere safe, okay?"
Lily nodded, still groggy. Erin lifted her out of the truck and carried her a short distance away, keeping her back to the house. She spoke softly to Lily, trying to keep her calm and distracted.
Meanwhile, Jay stayed in the house, his mind racing with questions. Who could have done this? And why? He knew they had to find answers quickly, not just for the sake of justice, but for Lily's future.
As the sound of sirens approached, Jay took a deep breath, preparing for the long night ahead.
The sound of sirens grew louder as the Intelligence Unit arrived on the scene. Detective Hank Voight stepped out of his car, his face set in a grim expression. He was followed by the rest of the team—Antonio Dawson, Kim Burgess, Kevin Atwater, and Adam Ruzek.
Jay met them at the front door, his face reflecting the gravity of the situation. "We've got two deceased inside, both with gunshot wounds. The little girl, Lily, is safe with Erin."
Voight nodded, his eyes hardening. "Let's secure the scene and start gathering evidence. We need to find out who did this and why."
The team moved efficiently, each member taking on their roles. Antonio and Kim began photographing the scene and collecting evidence, while Kevin and Adam canvassed the neighborhood for any witnesses or security footage.
Voight approached Jay, his voice low. "Any idea who these people are?"
Jay shook his head. "Not yet. We need to run their IDs and see if they had any enemies or if this was a random attack."
Voight nodded. "We'll get to the bottom of this. In the meantime, make sure Erin and the girl are okay."
Jay stepped outside to find Erin sitting on the curb with Lily, who was now fully awake and clinging to Erin. He crouched down beside them, offering a reassuring smile. "Hey, Lily. How are you holding up?"
Lily looked at him with wide eyes. "Where are my mommy and daddy?"
Jay's heart ached, but he kept his voice gentle. "We're going to find out what happened, okay? You're safe with us."
Erin gave Jay a grateful look. "We need to get her somewhere safe. She shouldn't be here."
Jay nodded. "I'll take her to the station. Voight will want to talk to her anyway, see if she knows anything that could help."
Erin stood up, still holding Lily. "I'll come with you."
As they walked towards one of the squad cars, Jay glanced back at the house, determination burning in his eyes.
Jay and Erin drove Lily to the station, where they were met by Trudy Platt at the front desk. Trudy's stern expression softened when she saw the little girl.
"Hey there, sweetheart," Trudy said gently. "Let's get you something to eat, okay?"
Lily nodded, still clinging to Erin. Trudy led them to a quiet room where Lily could rest and have a snack. Erin stayed with her, offering comfort and reassurance.
Meanwhile, Jay headed to the briefing room where Voight and the rest of the team were gathering. Voight looked up as Jay entered.
"How's the girl?" Voight asked.
"She's shaken, but she's okay," Jay replied. "Erin's with her now."
Voight nodded. "Good. We need to figure out who did this and why. Antonio, what do we have so far?"
Antonio stepped forward, holding a tablet. "The victims are identified as Mark and Sarah Thompson. No criminal records, but Mark worked as a financial advisor. We're looking into his clients to see if there's any connection."
Kim added, "We also found some security footage from a neighbor's camera. It shows a black SUV leaving the scene around the time of the murders. We're running the plates now."
Voight's eyes narrowed. "Good work. Let's keep digging. Jay, I want you and Erin to talk to Lily. See if she remembers anything that could help us."
Jay nodded. "We'll do our best."
He returned to the room where Erin and Lily were. Erin looked up as he entered, her expression a mix of concern and determination.
"Hey, Lily," Jay said softly. "We need to ask you a few questions, okay? It's really important."
Lily looked at him with wide eyes but nodded. "Okay."
Jay and Erin sat down with her, keeping their voices gentle and reassuring. "Do you remember anything about what happened at your house?" Erin asked.
Lily hesitated, then nodded slowly. "There were bad men. They were yelling at Mommy and Daddy."
Jay exchanged a glance with Erin. "Do you remember what they looked like? Or what they were saying?"
Lily's brow furrowed in concentration. "One of them had a big scar on his face. And they kept asking about money."
Jay's mind raced. "Did they say anything else? Anything about where they were going?"
Lily shook her head. "No. They just took Mommy and Daddy's things and left."
Erin squeezed Lily's hand. "Thank you, Lily. You've been very brave. We're going to find those bad men and make sure they can't hurt anyone else."
Lily nodded, her eyes filled with trust. Jay and Erin stood up, ready to relay the information to the team.
Jay and Erin returned to the briefing room to share what they had learned from Lily. Voight listened intently, his expression growing more serious with each detail.
"A man with a scar and they were asking about money," Voight repeated. "Sounds like a robbery gone wrong, but we need to find out who these guys are."
Antonio nodded. "I'll start looking into known criminals with that description. Maybe we can get a hit."
Kim added, "I'll check with our informants, see if anyone's heard about a job like this going down."
Voight turned to Jay and Erin. "Good work with the girl. Stay close to her. We might need more information as we go."
Jay and Erin nodded, heading back to the room where Lily was resting. Erin sat beside her, gently stroking her hair. "You're doing great, Lily. We're going to find the men who hurt your parents."
Lily looked up at Erin with big, trusting eyes. "Will they go to jail?"
Erin smiled softly. "Yes, they will. We'll make sure of it."
Meanwhile, the rest of the team worked tirelessly, following every lead. Antonio managed to find a match for the man with the scar—a known criminal named Victor Ramirez, who had a history of armed robbery. They also discovered that Ramirez had recently been seen with a group of men who fit the description Lily had given.
Voight gathered the team. "We've got a lead on Ramirez. He's been spotted at a warehouse on the south side. We're moving in."
Jay and Erin exchanged a determined look. "Let's bring them in," Jay said.
The team geared up and headed to the location. They moved in swiftly, surrounding the warehouse. Voight gave the signal, and they breached the building, weapons drawn.
Inside, they found Ramirez and his crew, caught off guard. A brief but intense standoff ensued, but the team quickly gained control, arresting the suspects without any casualties.
As Ramirez was being led away in handcuffs, Voight stepped up to him. "You're going away for a long time, Ramirez. And you're going to tell us everything about what happened at the Thompson house."
Ramirez sneered but said nothing. Voight's eyes hardened. "We'll see about that."
Back at the station, Jay and Erin informed Lily that the bad men had been caught. Lily's eyes filled with tears, but this time they were tears of relief. "Thank you," she whispered.
Erin hugged her gently. "You're safe now, Lily. We'll make sure you have a good home."
Jay nodded, his heart heavy but relieved. They had brought justice for Lily and her parents, and now it was time to help her start a new chapter in her life.
As the team wrapped up their work on the case, a social worker named Karen arrived at the station. She was a kind-looking woman with a warm smile, carrying a small bag of toys and snacks.
Jay and Erin met her at the front desk. "Hi, Karen. Thanks for coming on such short notice," Jay said.
Karen nodded, her expression sympathetic. "Of course. How's Lily holding up?"
"She's been incredibly brave," Erin replied. "But she needs a safe place to stay and someone to help her through this."
Karen smiled gently. "That's what I'm here for. Let's go see her."
They led Karen to the room where Lily was resting. When Lily saw Karen, she looked a bit apprehensive but stayed close to Erin.
"Hi, Lily," Karen said softly, kneeling down to her level. "My name is Karen, and I'm here to help you. I brought some toys and snacks for you."
Lily looked at the bag curiously. "Toys?"
Karen nodded, pulling out a small stuffed animal and a coloring book. "Would you like to play with these?"
Lily took the stuffed animal, hugging it tightly. "Thank you."
Karen smiled. "You're welcome. We're going to make sure you have a safe place to stay and people who care about you."
Erin knelt beside Lily, her voice gentle. "Karen is going to take care of you, Lily. We'll still be here if you need us, okay?"
Lily nodded, her grip on the stuffed animal tightening. "Okay."
Jay placed a reassuring hand on Lily's shoulder. "You're in good hands, Lily. We'll make sure everything is alright."
Karen stood up, looking at Jay and Erin. "I'll take her to a foster home for now, and we'll work on finding her a permanent place. Thank you both for everything you've done."
Erin smiled, though her eyes were filled with emotion. "Take good care of her."
As Karen led Lily out of the station, Jay and Erin watched, their hearts heavy but hopeful. They knew they had done everything they could to help Lily, and now it was time for her to start healing.
Voight approached them, his expression softening. "You two did good today. Let's make sure we get justice for her parents."
Jay and Erin nodded, ready to continue their work.
Lily was finally asleep in her new room at Karen's house. The room was cozy, decorated with soft colors and filled with comforting toys and books. Karen had done her best to make it feel like a safe haven for the little girl.
But in the middle of the night, Lily woke up with a start, her heart pounding. The room was unfamiliar, and the events of the past day came rushing back. She sat up in bed, her small body trembling, and screamed, "Jay! Jay!"
Karen rushed into the room, her face filled with concern. "Lily, it's okay. You're safe here."
Lily's eyes were wide with fear. "I want Jay. Where's Jay?"
Karen sat on the edge of the bed, gently pulling Lily into a comforting embrace. "Jay is at the police station, but you're safe here with me. He'll come see you soon, I promise."
Lily clung to Karen, her sobs gradually subsiding. "I want Jay," she whispered again, her voice filled with longing.
Karen stroked her hair soothingly. "I know, sweetie. How about we call him in the morning? Would that help?"
Lily nodded, her tears still flowing but her breathing starting to calm. "Okay."
Karen stayed with Lily until she fell back asleep, her small body finally relaxing. She knew it would take time for Lily to feel truly safe again, but she was determined to help her through it.
The next morning, Karen called Jay at the station. "Jay, it's Karen. Lily had a rough night. She woke up screaming for you."
Jay's heart ached at the news. "I'll come by as soon as I can. She needs to know we're still here for her."
When Jay arrived at Karen's house, Lily ran to him, her face lighting up with relief. "Jay!"
Jay knelt down and hugged her tightly. "Hey, Lily. I'm here. You're safe now."
Lily clung to him, her small arms wrapped around his neck. "Don't leave me."
Jay's voice was gentle but firm. "I won't. We'll get through this together."
Karen watched the scene with a soft smile. She knew that with Jay and Erin's support, Lily would find the strength to heal and move forward.
The next morning, Karen was in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. She poured a bowl of cereal and added some milk, hoping to make Lily feel at home. She carried the bowl to the table where Lily was sitting, her eyes still puffy from the previous night's tears.
"Good morning, Lily," Karen said with a warm smile. "I made you some cereal. It's really good, I promise."
Lily looked at the bowl, then pushed it away, her face scrunching up. "I don't want it."
Karen knelt down beside her, keeping her voice gentle. "I know things are really hard right now, but you need to eat something. How about we try a few bites together?"
Lily shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "I want Jay."
Karen's heart ached for the little girl. "I know you miss him. How about we call him after breakfast? Would that help?"
Lily hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Okay."
Karen smiled softly. "Alright, let's try a little bit of cereal first, and then we'll call Jay."
Lily reluctantly took a few bites, her appetite clearly diminished by the trauma she had experienced. Karen stayed close, offering encouragement and comfort.
After breakfast, Karen kept her promise and called Jay. When he answered, his voice was filled with concern. "Hey, Karen. How's Lily doing?"
"She's having a tough morning," Karen replied. "She really wants to talk to you."
Jay's voice softened. "Put her on."
Karen handed the phone to Lily. "It's Jay."
Lily's face lit up as she took the phone. "Jay?"
"Hey, Lily," Jay said gently. "How are you doing, kiddo?"
Lily's voice trembled. "I miss you."
"I miss you too," Jay replied. "But you're in a safe place with Karen. She's going to take good care of you."
Lily nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Will you come see me?"
Jay's heart broke at her plea. "I'll come see you as soon as I can, I promise. In the meantime, be brave, okay? You're doing great."
Lily sniffled. "Okay."
After the call, Karen hugged Lily tightly. "See? Jay's still here for you, even if he's not right next to you."
Lily nodded, feeling a bit more reassured. With Karen's support and Jay's promise, she knew she wasn't alone in this difficult time.
Later that day, Karen decided it would be good for Lily to visit the district and see Jay and Erin. She hoped it would help Lily feel more secure. Holding Lily's hand, Karen walked into the bustling police station.
As they entered, Trudy Platt greeted them with a warm smile. "Hey, Lily. It's good to see you again."
Lily gave a small smile in return, still holding tightly to Karen's hand. "Hi."
Karen led Lily to the briefing room where Jay and Erin were waiting. When Lily saw them, her face lit up, and she ran to Jay, who scooped her up in a big hug.
"Hey, kiddo," Jay said, smiling. "How are you doing?"
Lily hugged him tightly. "Better now."
Erin joined them, giving Lily a gentle pat on the back. "We've missed you, Lily. How's it going with Karen?"
Lily nodded. "She's nice. She made me breakfast."
Karen smiled. "Lily's been very brave. I thought it might help her to see you both."
Jay nodded, his expression softening. "We're glad you brought her by. It's important for her to know we're still here for her."
They spent some time together, talking and playing with Lily, who seemed to relax more with each passing minute. The familiar faces and comforting presence of Jay and Erin helped ease her anxiety.
As they were wrapping up, Voight entered the room. He gave Lily a kind smile. "Hey, Lily. How are you holding up?"
Lily looked up at him and nodded. "Okay."
Voight turned to Karen. "Thank you for bringing her in. It's good for her to see familiar faces."
Karen nodded. "Of course. It's important for her to feel connected and supported."
Jay gave Lily one last hug. "We'll see you again soon, okay? And remember, you're safe with Karen."
Lily nodded, her grip on Jay's hand lingering. "Okay."
As Karen and Lily left the station, Jay and Erin watched them go, their hearts heavy but hopeful. They knew it would take time for Lily to heal, but with the support of her new family and the unwavering dedication of the Intelligence Unit, she had a bright future ahead.
That night, Karen was asleep in her room, exhausted from the day's events. The house was quiet, the only sound the soft hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. Suddenly, a piercing cry shattered the silence.
"Jay! Erin!" Lily's voice was filled with fear and desperation.
Karen woke up instantly, her heart racing. She hurried to Lily's room, finding the little girl sitting up in bed, tears streaming down her face.
"Lily, it's okay. I'm here," Karen said gently, sitting on the edge of the bed and pulling Lily into a comforting embrace.
Lily clung to her, sobbing. "I had a bad dream. I want Jay and Erin."
Karen stroked Lily's hair, her voice soothing. "I know, sweetie. It's okay to be scared. Jay and Erin are just a phone call away. Do you want to talk to them?"
Lily nodded, her sobs starting to subside. Karen reached for her phone and dialed Jay's number. It rang a few times before he answered, his voice groggy but alert.
"Karen? Is everything okay?"
"Jay, it's Lily. She had a bad dream and wants to talk to you," Karen explained.
Jay's voice softened. "Put her on."
Karen handed the phone to Lily. "It's Jay."
Lily took the phone, her voice trembling. "Jay?"
"Hey, Lily. I'm here. What happened?" Jay asked gently.
"I had a bad dream. I was so scared," Lily said, her voice breaking.
"It's okay, Lily. It was just a dream. You're safe now," Jay reassured her. "Remember what we talked about? You're with Karen, and she's going to take good care of you."
Lily sniffled. "Will you come see me tomorrow?"
Jay's heart ached at her plea. "Of course. Erin and I will come by first thing in the morning. How does that sound?"
Lily nodded, a small smile forming on her lips. "Okay."
"Try to get some sleep, kiddo. We'll see you soon," Jay said.
"Okay. Goodnight, Jay," Lily whispered.
"Goodnight, Lily," Jay replied.
Karen took the phone back, her voice filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Jay. That really helped."
"Anytime. We'll be there in the morning," Jay promised.
After the call, Karen tucked Lily back into bed, staying with her until she fell asleep again. She knew it would take time for Lily to feel truly safe, but with the support of Jay, Erin, and the rest of the team, she was confident they could help her heal.
The next morning, true to their word, Jay and Erin arrived at Karen's house. Karen greeted them at the door, her expression a mix of relief and gratitude.
"Thank you both for coming," Karen said. "Lily had a rough night, but she's been looking forward to seeing you."
Jay and Erin nodded, their concern evident. "We're glad to be here," Erin said. "Where is she?"
Karen led them to the living room, where Lily was sitting on the couch, clutching the stuffed animal Jay had given her. When she saw them, her face lit up, and she ran to them, throwing her arms around Jay.
"Jay! Erin!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with joy.
Jay hugged her tightly. "Hey, kiddo. How are you doing?"
Lily looked up at him, her eyes bright. "Better now that you're here."
Erin knelt down beside them, smiling. "We missed you, Lily. How about we spend some time together today?"
Lily nodded eagerly. "Yes, please!"
Karen watched the reunion with a warm smile. "I'll give you some space. If you need anything, just let me know."
Jay and Erin spent the morning with Lily, playing games and talking. They took her to a nearby park, where she laughed and played on the swings, her spirits lifting with each passing moment. The familiar presence of Jay and Erin brought her a sense of security and comfort.
As they sat on a bench, watching Lily play, Erin turned to Jay. "She's doing better, but it's going to take time."
Jay nodded, his expression thoughtful. "Yeah, but she's strong. And she's got us."
Erin smiled. "And Karen. She's been amazing."
Jay agreed. "We're lucky to have her."
When it was time to head back, Lily held Jay and Erin's hands, her steps lighter than they had been in days. Back at Karen's house, they sat down for lunch, enjoying the simple pleasure of being together.
After lunch, Jay and Erin prepared to leave, promising Lily they would visit again soon. "Remember, we're always here for you," Jay said, giving her one last hug.
Lily nodded, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you."
As Jay and Erin walked back to their car, they felt a renewed sense of purpose.
One night, despite the comfort of Max sleeping beside her, Lily woke up crying again. The shadows in her room seemed to loom larger, and the memories of that terrible night resurfaced in her dreams. Her cries echoed through the quiet house.
Karen woke up instantly, her heart racing. She hurried to Lily's room, finding the little girl sitting up in bed, tears streaming down her face.
"Lily, it's okay. I'm here," Karen said softly, sitting on the edge of the bed and pulling Lily into a comforting embrace.
Lily clung to Karen, her sobs shaking her small frame. "I had a bad dream again," she whispered, her voice trembling.
Karen stroked her hair gently. "I know, sweetie. It's okay to be scared. Do you want to talk about it?"
Lily shook her head, her tears still flowing. "I want Jay and Erin."
Karen nodded, understanding the comfort Lily found in their presence. "Let's call them, okay?"
Lily nodded, sniffling. Karen reached for her phone and dialed Jay's number. After a few rings, Erin answered, her voice groggy but alert.
"Hello?"
"Erin, it's Karen. Lily had another bad dream and wants to talk to Jay. Is he there?" Karen asked.
Erin sighed softly. "Jay's asleep. He had a really hard case today and just got to bed. But I'll talk to Lily."
Karen handed the phone to Lily. "It's Erin."
Lily took the phone, her voice small and shaky. "Erin?"
"Hey, Baby. I'm here. What happened?" Erin asked gently.
"I had a bad dream. I was so scared," Lily said, her voice breaking.
"It's okay, Lily. It was just a dream. You're safe now," Erin reassured her. "Remember, Max is there with you, and Karen is right by your side."
Lily sniffled. "Will you and Jay come see me tomorrow?"
Erin's heart ached at her plea. "Of course. We'll come by first thing in the morning. How does that sound?"
Lily nodded, a small sleepy smile forming on her lips. "Okay."
"Try to get some sleep, baby. We'll see you soon," Erin said.
"Okay. Goodnight, Erin," Lily whispered.
"Goodnight, Sweetie," Erin replied.
Karen took the phone back, her voice filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Erin. That really helped."
"Anytime. We'll be there in the morning," Erin promised.
After the call, Karen tucked Lily back into bed, staying with her until she fell asleep again.
The next morning, Karen noticed that Erin and Jay should have arrived by now. She glanced at the clock, her concern growing with each passing minute. Lily was sitting on the couch, playing with Max, but Karen could see the anticipation in her eyes.
"Where are they?" Lily asked, her voice tinged with worry.
"I'm not sure, sweetie," Karen replied, trying to keep her voice calm. "Let me make a quick call to find out."
Karen picked up her phone and dialed the district. After a few rings, Trudy Platt answered.
"21st District, Sergeant Platt speaking."
"Hi, Trudy, it's Karen. Erin and Jay were supposed to be here by now to see Lily, but they haven't shown up. Is everything okay?" Karen asked, her voice filled with concern.
Trudy's voice softened. "Karen, Erin and Jay had a really tough case last night. Erin's here, but Jay's still asleep. He was up all night working."
Karen sighed with relief, but her concern for Jay was evident. "I understand. Can I speak to Erin?"
"Sure, hold on a moment," Trudy said.
A few seconds later, Erin's voice came on the line. "Hey, Karen. I'm so sorry we're late. Jay had a rough night with a hard case, and he's still catching up on sleep."
Karen nodded, even though Erin couldn't see her. "I understand. Lily's been looking forward to seeing you both. Do you think you can come by soon?"
"Absolutely," Erin replied. "I'll head over now, and I'll bring Jay as soon as he's up. Tell Lily we're on our way."
Karen smiled, feeling reassured. "Thank you, Erin. I'll let her know."
After hanging up, Karen turned to Lily, who was watching her expectantly. "Erin's on her way, and Jay will come as soon as he wakes up. They had a tough night, but they'll be here soon."
Lily's face brightened with relief. "Okay."
A short while later, Erin arrived at Karen's house. Lily ran to her, throwing her arms around Erin's waist. "Erin!"
Erin hugged her tightly. "Hey, Lily. I'm sorry we're late. Jay had a hard night, but he'll be here soon."
Lily nodded, her worry easing. "Okay."
They spent the morning together, playing and talking. Erin's presence brought a sense of calm to Lily, and they enjoyed their time together. Later, Jay arrived, looking a bit tired but smiling warmly at Lily.
"Hey, kiddo," Jay said, scooping her up in a hug. "Sorry I'm late."
Lily hugged him tightly. "It's okay. I'm just glad you're here."
With Erin and Jay by her side, Lily felt safe and loved.
