Sarah slept, and felt her world changing. She dreamed she saw into the history of Ed, Edd and Eddy. She saw Edd and his family only move in recently, Edd was so introverted that he found every interaction with anyone but his parents utterly exhausting. She saw Eddy bound not with her brother, but with Kevin. Kevin and Eddy both had a sort of weird bond to their wheeled vehicles. Eddy had a scooter he couldn't ever part with. Ed, her brother, was now her permanent play mate. Constantly babysitting and taking care of Sarah. Sarah woke up, and was excited.
"Remember to go outside and get some sunshine," The note on Double D's desk read.
He sighed, "Thanks Dad."
Double D went outside, with a book. He was in the backyard and sat on a chair in the sun to read. However, he could hear the kids playing and went inside shortly after.
Meanwhile, Kevin was on his bike being tailed by Eddy on his scooter.
Kevin chirped happily, "You're keeping up way more than last time, dork!"
Eddy said, "Thanks, Kevin!"
The two wheeled around the neighborhood. Soon, they had to stop to take a drink of water.
Sarah was playing with Jimmy and Ed.
"More tea," Sarah asked, "big brother?"
Ed gave a nod. Sarah poured a bit of the liquid into Ed's teacup.1
Kevin and Eddy wheeled up to the little tea party.
Kevin hissed, "Hey you, big dork!"
Ed ignored him.
Sarah said angrily, "Leave us alone, Kevin."
Then Ed made eye contact with Eddy. In that moment, Ed and Eddy felt a connection. Eddy tried to shake it off, but the link was made. Sarah could tell Eddy felt bad for Ed, and Ed seemed genuinely embarrassed by being seen like this.
Eddy said, "Come on, Kev. Let's ride in the junkyard, there's a lot more hills there."
Kevin scoffed, "Come on, Eddy. Tease him a little with me."
Eddy said, "Nah, I wanna show you a new trick I learned."
Kevin said, "Fine!"
Ed was confused as the two wheeled away. Sarah grimaced, but Ed went right back to playing with her.
Sarah asked Ed, "Kevin is a real jerk isn't he?"
Ed said, "Sure, but I don't think his friend was bad."
Sarah scoffed, "He's a jerk by proximity, Ed. You should know that."
Ed seemed conflicted. Sarah was frustrated but noticed Ed seemed unhappy. Ed was playing with her but was less than enthused.
Later she went to her room and noticed that her tiara was whole. She smiled at the sight.
Eddy and Kevin were at the junkyard. Eddy showed Kevin that he could jump a ramp, spin his scooter in the air while holding the handle and land on the scooter.
Kevin said with a chuckle, "That was sick, dude!"
Eddy chuckled, "Thanks Kevin!"
Eddy thought for a moment, he was remembering that quiet connection he made with Ed.
Kevin asked, "Got something on your mind, bud?"
Eddy said, "I just remembered I have to do something."
He wheeled off, back to the cul-de-sac. Eddy came to Ed and Sarah's house. He got off his scooter and began looking around the house. He entered the gate to the backyard almost instinctively. He looked around the backyard and spotted a window low to the ground. He bent down to knock on it, and to his surprise, Ed answered, opening the window.
Eddy said, "Um, Hi, sorry about Kevin earlier. he can be real jerk sometimes."
Ed said, "Eh, I'm not too worried about it. You seem cool though. Hello, I are Ed! What's your name?"
Eddy chuckled and said, "I'm Eddy."
Ed asked, "Do you like video games?"
Eddy said, "Heck yeah I do!"
Ed said, "Hop in through the window, don't worry I got a bean bag so you can land real soft-like."
Ed left the window and Eddy squeezed through, landing on the beam bag chair. Eddy looked around amazed.
Eddy said, "Wow, look at this cool stuff you got!"
Ed blushed, "It's just a few things my dad let me keep from his college days. Speaking of which."
Ed pulled out a crumbled cardboard box and inside was an old video game console that looked to be made of wood.
Eddy asked, "What the heck is that?"
Ed answered, "A Stari 600! I've got classic Moon Blasters."
Eddy was intrigued and said, "But that's so old."
Ed was a bit embarrassed, "It's the only two player game I own."
Eddy chuckled, "Hey, don't sweat it lumpy. I've never played it on original hardware like this."
Eddy playfully punched Ed's arm. Ed chuckled in turn and plugged in the console into his TV. Ed and Eddy played a few rounds, blasting their way through pixelated space. They managed to get a game over.
Ed said, "Aw man, we were on level 25!"
Eddy said, "You know Ed, this is going to sound weird, but I feel like we've met before. I just can't put my finger on when."
Ed thought for a moment and said, "You know I feel the same. It reminds me of Supernatural Dan issue number 28, when Dan dreams of this girl. Then they meet in real life. As it turns out that he was sharing a dream with her! It's one of his weird powers! See he is part spirit because of a freak accident and..."
Eddy said interrupting Ed, "Spare me his origin story, lumpy. Are you suggesting that we've shared a dream somehow?"
Ed said, "Uh, yeah, it's possible."
Eddy said, "Now that you mention it,"
Suddenly, he was interrupted by the door to the basement slamming and high-healed footsteps started coming down the stairs. Ed seized up, almost stiff and then immediately went into full on panic mode.
Ed said, fear in his voice "It's my mom! Quick Eddy, hide!"
Eddy didn't need to be told twice and quickly hid under the bed, barely daring to even breathe. Ed unplugged the console and sat on his chair, reading a comic book. The high-healed footsteps stopped at Ed's door. The door opened, and Ed put the comic down to meet his mother's gaze.
Ed quivered as he said, "Hi mom! Uh, What did you need from me?"
His mom didn't answer, instead she approached him with something behind her back. Eddy closed his eyes tightly, no wanting to bear the sight.
Ed then said, genuine surprise in his voice, "Oh, for me? Thanks Mom!"
Ed's mom then left the room, closing the door behind her and the High-healed footsteps left the basement.
Ed heaved a heavy sigh of relief, as well as Eddy. Eddy opened his eyes and came out from under the bed. Eddy saw that Ed had a bowl full of really cheesy macaroni and cheese.
Ed pulled a couple of plastic sporks from his pocket and offered one to Eddy, "Want to share this with me?"
Eddy said, "Nah, I should probably just head home. But uh, how am I supposed to get out of here?"
Ed said, setting his meal aside, "I can help with that, if you trust me."
Eddy said, "Weirdly, I do."
Ed then picked up Eddy with an "Ally oop!" and squeezed him through the window back outside.
Ed said, "Tada!"
Eddy chuckled and said, "Thanks Ed!"
Ed asked, "Will you come back tomorrow?"
Eddy said, "Sure thing, pal."
Eddy then went back out front, picked up his scooter and wheeled home. On his way, a strange occurrence happened, he made eye contact with Double D taking out the trash. It was barely half a second, but there was a connection made. Double D tried to shake it off, but the link was made. Eddy smiled at Double D in a warm way and Double D surprised even himself, smiling back at Eddy.
The next day, Double D struggled to keep himself indoors. Just thinking about all those other kids made it seem so daunting. He didn't want to be so drained by every interaction that he couldn't function. But then, he thought of that link he made with that other boy.
Double D muttered to himself, "I swear I've met him before. But that's impossible! Use your head Edward! You can't trust a gut feeling, you'll be tricked into a wild goose chase."
Eddy helped Ed escape his basement room.
Eddy said, "So yesterday after I left your place I passed by that new kid's place and you know how you and I connected on sight? It happened again with the new kid."
Ed asked, "Do you think he'll connect with me too?"
Eddy said, "Only one way to find out."
The two of them came to Double D's house. Eddy rang the doorbell and Double D answered. Sure enough, as soon as Double D made eye contact with Ed, they felt a link form between them.
Eddy said, "Um, hey, I'm Eddy!"
Ed said, "And I'm Ed!"
Double D said, "Oh, that's a weird coincidence! My name is Edward, but most folks call me Edd too, but it's spelt with two D's!"
Ed said, "Double D, got it!"
Double D then let them in, saying, "Come on inside, my parents won't be home for hours!"
Eddy and Ed looked around. They came into the kitchen and were a bit unnerved by all the post-it notes.
Eddy asked, "Why do you have so many notes everywhere, Double D?"
Double D said, "Oh those are from my parents, their not home too often so they leave me notes;"
Ed said, "Woah, your so lucky!"
Eddy asked, "Do you have any siblings?"
Double D answered honestly, "I don't. I'm their first and only child."
Eddy said, "Wow, you really are lucky."
Ed said, sitting down at the table in the kitchen, "It must get lonely all by yourself."
Double D said, pulling out a few sodas for himself and his guests, "Oh no, I like the solitude, helps me keep from distractions."
Eddy also sat down and asked, "From what exactly? It's summer break, you should want to be living it to the fullest!"
Double D sat at the table and set down the sodas and said, "I am, by catching up on my reading list! Mostly plant biology text books."
Ed took a soda and asked, "You like studying plants?"
Double D replied, "Why, yes! I keep one in my room in fact! It's a cactus named Jim. Ah, but enough about me. Tell me, have we met before?"
Eddy shrugged and replied, "You tell me, we think we've met in a dream or something."
Ed said, "Yeah, like in Paranormal Dan issue number 28."
Double D said, "Oh, that's a deep pull! Where did you find a copy?"
Ed answered, "My dad let me keep his collection. You can take a look for yourself sometime if you'd like."
Double D said, "That's very generous of you, Ed but I have plenty to read in my own collection."
Eddy asked, "You collect comic books?"
Double D answered, "I used to, but going to the comic book store became daunting. I get so exhausted by so many people at once."
Eddy said with a chuckle, "I figured."
Eddy then began thinking.
