Chapter 5 - Help Against Monsters or Neocolonialism?
We already knew then what the problem would be in inviting less technologically developed dimensions. When IA was created the division of power was simple. We have one representative and GA one. Then GU joined in, little by little, and Paradis had to have a separate representative so as not to annoy Marley and the others, even though it was still the bad trade of many worse. Then there was Chaldea. Apparently only 2 dozen personnel, but Grall allowed them to summon almost every hero in history, so Archaman had a lot to say. And then came those dimensions with empires that could match or even surpass the Third Reich or the USSR in brutality and we had to separate them, which resulted in several votes for one dimension. It was, is, and will be a pain in the ass for the next 100 years. At least we handled the first interactions. Mostly.
Interview with Vakhtang Markarian, 14 AW
=location: Alnus Hill, 50 days after invasion=
Gods felt that someone is trying to open a portal on the other side. They saw quickly who it was, and probably thought of punishing him. They only saw the advancing forces for a second.
And that was enough to scare them.
They summoned all the apostles from all the nations and ordered them to report to Alnus Hill, where they were to redirect the main invasion force. The Empire led almost all its forces, over half a million soldiers with another 300,000 belonging to various vassals. Another 400,000 belonged to different nations. All kinds of species and creatures have gathered, from humans to fairies and Amazons to Medusaes and Draconians. Armed with from ordinary swords and shields to new inventions, gunpowder cannons. They rode from horses to wyverns to even dragons. In addition, mages of all kinds prepared for combat and healing. In total, over 1.2 million soldiers, mages, and warriors were ready for battle.
The most impressive fortress in the history of Faltmart was built around the hill. The forests for many kilometers around the hill were cleared and used to make makeshift shelters for soldiers and fortifications. Supplies for months of fighting and materials for the construction of further fortifications and granaries were brought.
But when the enemy army came, it quickly turned out to be not enough.
The first day of fighting focused on Alnus Hill itself, where a large group of soldiers was stationed in a makeshift fort. The opening of the gate surprised them and they were cut down. The commander-in-chief of the United Falmart Forces (UFF), Imperator Molt Sol Augustus, immediately ordered catapults, ballistae, and cannons to shell the area. The shelling continued for hours, but the monsters broke through anyway, striking the front lines of the fort.
The first line, only trenches, and small stockades, had already inflicted heavy losses on the invaders, but ultimately it was to be a delay line so that the siege weapons could safely retreat from the second line to the third, after bombarding Alnus Hill as much as they could. Once in position, Molt ordered the Wyvern Corps to cover the retreat from the first line to the second. The retreat was successful and the soldiers regrouped behind the second line, where more soldiers took their place on the front line.
The second line of defense was much better prepared. Multiple pits full of spikes are set up as visible traps, forcing the enemy to attack specific places or fall into the pits. These places were stone forts, though walls would have been a better description. 8 meters high and 2 meters thick, they were supposed to stop the main attack. Behind them were thousands of archers ready to cover the sun with arrows. The mages prepared the most devastating spells they knew, and the catapults, ballistae, and cannons took new positions ready to fire.
But the enemy ignored the forts.
Disregarding the traps, they attacked across the fields, dying by the thousands by falling into a pit trap. But that didn't slow down the attack as the minions ran after their own just to get to the UFF position. Of course, the area between the forts had fortifications, but it was just an earth rampart reinforced with wood. Still over 2 meters high, but it was nothing compared to forts and could only hold the lines for a while.
As soon as Molt saw this from his command post, he ordered the mages and siege units to attack the monsters in the spike fields. However, all those able to work were to start digging a trench in front of the rampart, giving at least some additional protection. Thanks to magical transmission, the orders were accepted almost immediately, and during the entire half-hour, a trench half a meter deep and two wide was formed in front of the rampart.
And so the fighting began on the second line, with monsters losing 3-10 times as many minions as the soldiers, although it was dependent on the part of the front line. When night fell, they originally expected a breakthrough in combat, as dictated by standard military tactics in any army in the world.
But it was not an army of this world. Actually, it wasn't even an army, more like a horde of monsters of all kinds. Molt got reports and saw demi-humans that looked like a cross between a goat and a human, armed with basic spears and hatchets, massive very human beasts with steel-clad faces, small fat demons with horns, three-armed monsters, that had a head extending from belly-to-shoulder, monstrous wild boars covered in spikes and many more in different colors and with different powers.
Fortunately, the line of defense was short enough that only a small percentage of his forces fought at a time, although with an army of over a million, this small percentage is 40,000 soldiers. Exchanges were frequent, as few could fight for more than a dozen minutes at a time, and entire units had to be replaced every 2 hours. Each time bringing wounded and dead in the thousands.
So the fighting continued through the night. The fighting continued throughout the day. And the next night. And so for 4 days. The soldiers were exhausted, and the arrows were at the end, with more than 90,000 dead and 150,000 wounded. And among them were even the apostles and the Flame Dragon, which burned tens of thousands before dying. So many monsters have fallen that Alnus Hill has turned into Body Hill, with bodies literally burying the hill.
For the past few days, the third line has been fortified with many trenches, pits, and palisades. But he needed 60,000 troops to cover the entire new front. With current losses and exhaustion already present, Molt and his council of war, composed of the most illustrious kings and generals, had an impossible decision.
Fight on the second line, where traps and many defense systems have already been destroyed, almost leveling the battlefield.
Or retreat to the third line, which will require over 20,000 more troops to fight on the front line at all times.
Does it even make sense if this horde seems endless?
"Father, we should strike back!" - cried Zorzal - "Our cavalry is forced to fight like ordinary soldiers and we are not using them as we should. One charge from our cavalry and all hostile forces will fall under our might."
Molt just hung his head on his son's stupidity. In theory, he was right, cavalry used as mere infantry was a waste. However, in this battle, the cavalry's most important skill, the charge that breaks up the enemy formation and morale, has become useless.
"Emperor Molt." - said King Duran - "With all due respect, why did you bring him of your children to the most important battle in the history of Falmart? Your second son Diabo or daughter Pina would be much more useful."
"How dare!" - shouted Zorzal - "I conquered the terrible Warrior Bunnies."
"Losing how many times more troops than Warrior Bunnies?" - replied Duran - "2? 3? 5? Face it. The only reason you won was because you were outnumbered. And we don't have it here! This decision could affect the fate of all of Falmart. There is no room for mistakes or bravado here. Not against these monsters."
Simultaneously, on the battlefield, Rory Mercury battled an enemy ice troll encased in ice outside the UFF defense lines. When he swung his mace from behind his head, Rory rushed forward, slicing one of his legs. The troll began to collapse under its own weight on its side, crushing several smaller creatures beneath it. When he tried to get up, Rory finished the job by smashing his skull with her axe.
"This is the 689th monster I've killed today. Plus the 4 that died under his body." - Rory was saying to herself as she swung the ax behind her, killing one of the enemy creatures that tried to lunge at her - "694. Not bad. But on the first day, I killed almost a thousand at this point. Is it fatigue?" - another creature tried to pounce on her, but she was cut down as well - "I never got tired, but the fight has been going on for 4 days, so maybe I'm really tired." - suddenly 3 pink humanoids with claws instead of hands rushed at her simultaneously. One swing of the ax and they were all dead.
Suddenly, a shockwave came out of the portal, knocking out most of the monsters on their side. Rory and almost every soldier on the front lines felt the shockwave. Monsters within about 100 meters of the portal were literally thrown into the air. However, the rest didn't even pay attention to it and continued their attack on the UFF positions. However, Rory decided to take a closer look at this portal. With a smile on her face, she rushed towards the portal, slashing whatever she found with her axe. She suffered a few light wounds along the way, but they healed quickly.
As she approached the portal, she noticed that some of the monsters had changed direction and were attacking the portal. And there was a fight going on. Several characters battled against a horde of monsters with many fresh dead in between. Rory quickly jumped between them and the monsters, splitting the head of a troll on the way.
"Looks like you guys are having fun here." - Rory said - "Can I join you?"
"Go ahead." - said the man with the crimson spear in blue, impaling one of the monstrous quadrupeds - "Just watch out for Fran, because..."
Suddenly, a woman in a ballroom with a big club hit one of the monsters. Electricity shot out of her mace, hitting everything around her.
"You see for yourself anyway." - said the archer. The two then dodged a fireball that was approaching them before attacking another of these creatures - "My name is Cú Chulainn, by the way."
"Rory Mercury." - Rory replied, parrying the attack of one of the minotaurs, then immediately returned it, lifting its head from the body - "If you are here, then the monsters on the other side must have been annihilated."
"Probably so." - Cu Chulainn said - "Terrans sent their parachute troops to secure the landing zone of the main force. It's a good thing the nuke for some reason didn't change the terrain at all, which was flat to begin with, or you wouldn't be able to land their tanks."
"Ha!" - shouted the woman in red, slashing the red of another of these creatures with hers - "And to think that my soldiers will be the ones who will save the day. Of course, they will follow their Emperor everywhere, as befits the Romans."
"Firstly." - said the centaur in white and gold garb as he shot arrows so fast that to the untrained eye, it might seem as if he never drew the bowstring - "It's a group of nations' effort, the Shire transports most of the troops, but that's barely 50% of the total personnel. Besides, they're from a completely different dimension."
"Details, Chiron." - Nero said.
"So, do you have an army there?" - asked Rory.
"Rather a small unit." - replied Chiron - "24 C-17s can only transport so many troops and tanks at a time."
"Tanks?" - asked Rory.
Then there was a bang from behind Rory, like a cannon shot. It hit one of the ogres, piercing it and exploding behind it, killing a dozen monsters. Then things that could be described as iron elephants came out of the portal, spitting cannon fire at the enemies. A total of 5 such vehicles entered the portal.
"These are tanks." - Chiron said.
Behind the tanks came about 300 soldiers in green uniforms, carrying some strange object. A shot could be heard from these objects, and a moment later holes could be seen in the monsters around.
"What weapon is that?" - said Rory, surprised.
"Assault rifle, model Beretta AR70." - Chiron said - "I'll explain later. First we have to eliminate these monsters."
And so the battle lasted another hour. As soon as word of the destruction of the monster forces on the other side of the portal was heard, the UFF immediately launched a counterattack. The soldiers, exhausted by several days of constant fighting, gathered their strength for a last charge to finish off the monster army. Blood flowed in streams, but in this lake of corpses, it was barely visible.
After the fight, Rory led the UEG soldiers and 4 Heroic Spirits to the command tent. Around, the UFF soldiers stepped aside to make room and looked on in awe at these newcomers and their vehicles. The UEG troops stopped and lined up in front of the command tent, and out of their ranks came Capitan Sandro Palmiotto and Chiron to represent IA. The UFF leaders headed by Emperor Molt came out of the tent.
"I am Emperor Molt Sol Augustus, the current leader of the Empire of Sadera and commander-in-chief of the United Falmart Forces."
"This is Captain Sandro Palmiotto, commander of the troops on this side of the portal. I, on the other hand, am Chiron and will serve as a translator."
"Then tell me, who are you and where did you come from?" - Molt said.
Sandro began to say something in an unknown language, and Chiron again flawlessly translated - "We are soldiers of the United Earth Government, a member of the Interdimensional Alliance, under which we come here. We are at war with the same creatures that have attacked you for a long time, and we are looking for allies who could help us fight them. Every dimension, race, and nation will be needed to win this war."
"So what is your Alliance made of?"
"The UEG consists of nearly 200 different nations, the Gamindustri Alliance with 13, a dozen more from the Global Union, and Chaldea, an organization of heroes of all renown."
"Listen to him Molt." - Rory chimed in - "Every one of these guys from Chaldea is as strong as the Apostle."
"I assume you want the United Faltmart Forces to join your Interdimensional Alliance?" - Molt said.
"Correct." - replied Chiron.
"What would our responsibilities and advantages be?"
"You would have to send expeditionary forces and resources to war and submit to IA command. In return, you would receive territories around the portal to your dimension and a place in Alliance command. In addition, after the war, you will be able to receive more territory after agreeing with the rest of the leaders."
After a moment's thought, Molt said - "I'll inform the other leaders and your proposal. Expect a response in a few days."
=location: Unknown territory, 51 days since invasion=
While the UEG troops with little support from Chaldea successfully carried out an operation to destroy the monster forces at the UFF portal, IA sent a second expedition to an unknown dimension. The groups were mixed, but due to the fights, also relatively light. The main source was Company soldiers from various GA nations plus support from other nations. It was supposed to build camaraderie between the forces of different nations and dimensions, which was difficult.
One such combined force, a mix of UK and Lowee soldiers, goes through the portal and straight into the courtyard of some castle. MarvelousAQL, who was in charge of this expedition, immediately ordered the column to stop. And just like that, they stood in the middle of the courtyard as the soldiers began to run in and surround them. The tension in the air was visible, and it only got worse with the arrival of a young man in a blue uniform with blue eyes and hair. He was escorted by a dozen mages, or at least people dressed as mages.
"I am Wales Tudor, Crown Prince of Albion, and I want an explanation of who you are and how you got into the castle." - said the blond.
"I am MarvelousAQL and I represent the Interdimensional Alliance." - Marvy said - "I'm sorry for arriving suddenly in the middle of the castle, but it was an accident, not hostile action. We wanted to ask for an audience with your ruler on a matter of the utmost importance. We have to pass the information directly to him. We can back out if you want."
After thinking for a moment, Wales asked - "How many representatives do you have?"
"2. Me and Captain Milly Sallow."
"You two can go under guard, but first most of your men must leave. You can leave 2 magic chariots and a dozen soldiers, but they are not allowed outside the courtyard area"
The IA soldiers obeyed and quickly began retreating through the portal as Marvy and Captain Milly left for an audience with King James I. When they saw the king and the prince introduced them, the two ladies bowed slightly as a sign of respect.
"So, you are strangers from distant nations." - James said.
"Exactly from distant dimensions, but you're right." - Marvy said.
"Another dimension?" - asked the slightly surprised king.
"Great armies of monsters roam through different dimensions, slaughtering any intelligent species they encounter." - Milly began - "We've been fighting them for almost two months, we've conquered an area comparable to the entire planet, we've killed hundreds of millions, but there's no end in sight. Many worlds have already fallen victim to their invasion, and many more will fall. To save those who have yet to meet this horde, and to honor all those who have fallen, we must continue this fight, no matter how long it takes. We are gathering all who can fight with us against this threat. That is why we have come to you as well."
The king rested his head on his hands. He looked very tired.
"While I understand your request, Albion cannot help you." - said the Crown Prince- "The rebels, calling themselves the Reconquista, under the command of Oliver Cromwell, began to expand. They have now occupied many lands west of our capital, Londinium. Many nobles have decided to betray the crown and join them."
"What if we helped put down this rebellion?" - Milly asked.
"Then the royal family would look weak to ask foreigners for help." - Wales replied.
"We understand." - Marvy said - "But right now, countless lives are on the line. We cannot afford infighting. Is there any way we could help put down the rebellion, and in return, you would join the fight?"
The king said - "Give me and my advisors a moment to think. Wales, escort the ambassadors to their men."
"As you wish, Father." - said Wales and took Marvy and Milly to their soldiers.
As they walked down the corridors, Milly asked Wales - "Is King James all right? He seemed sick."
Wales sighed and said - "The last few years have been hard, especially for him. Reconquista is the latest of the problems we've had, but King was weakening for a long time."
"Maybe you should take the throne." - Marvy said.
"What are you insinuating?" Wales asked, glaring at her.
"Look, your father is old and sickly." - Marvy began - "Honestly, he doesn't look like he's capable of ruling the country for much longer. Perhaps your citizens are leaving the crown because your king no longer looks like a capable leader. Even the best people will eventually buckle under the influence of time. But if his young, strong, intelligent, handsome son took his place, the Crown would have more credibility in the eyes of the people. Taking the weight off his shoulders will also be good for him."
Wales continued to stare at Marvy until he finally sighed and said - "You're probably right. But I will only do it with his permission. In the meantime, stay tuned for the outcome of our meeting with the advisors in the courtyard."
"We will do it this way." - Milly said.
In the yard, they entered Lowee's vehicle, which had a communications device mounted on it.
"HQ, this is the Delta scouting team." - Milly told the radio.
"This is HQ, report Delta." - said the operator.
"We found a nation called Albion. It seems that technologically they are at the level of the late Middle Ages or Renaissance. The king is in bad shape and to make matters worse they are in the middle of a civil war. However, his son seems ready to accept power, but only if his father abdicates early of his own free will. He is extremely loyal to his father. We'll probably have to send them help to deal with the rebellion before they can help us. He offers to help if the current prince takes over."
"I see. The report has been saved and will be forwarded to the command. HQ out."
"I just hope others did better than us." - Marvy said.
=location: Tristain Academy of Magic=
The smallest portal led to the Tristain Academy of Magic, only MAGES were sent there with one IFV Leanbox and 2 trucks full of Marley soldiers. Initially, the meeting was very tense. The students practically panicked as the teachers ran out to block the passage while the IA soldiers just sat in their vehicles. Fortunately, the conflict was resolved relatively quickly, and MAGES. was invited to the Headmaster Principal's room to discuss the situation. The soldiers got out of the vehicles and started talking to the students.
However, their conversations soon turned unpleasant.
"So your nobility is about having magic?" - asked one of the Leanbox soldiers, Greg.
"Yes." - replied the student, Montmorency de Montmorency - "And it's not like that with you? So how do you choose your nobility?"
"There is no nobility at all." - answered the same soldier, shocking the girl.
"But it's impossible! Every country needs nobility. After all, they are people chosen to rule and lead."
"We are ruled by the CPU, Lady Green Heart and her predecessors. They established many centuries ago that persons in positions of power such as politicians, military commanders, and land rulers should be chosen for their past merits, not because they were born into a family whose person had achieved something before."
"But it does not make sense. The nobles were chosen by the Founder himself, Brimir, to rule and lead the commoners."
"First, another dimension where Brimir never spawned. Secondly, how many years ago was that?"
"Six thousand."
"Do you really think that just because Brimir deemed your ancestors worthy of the title 6,000 years ago, it will hold up to this day?"
"Are you insulting me?"
"I'm just stating the truth."
And it only got worse.
"How dare you, commoner." - said Guiche de Gramont.
"That's true, primitive." - said Marley's soldier, Werlan - "Marley would annihilate Tristan's military in a few days. You've got a few mages at best, some sword infantry, and some magical pets. We have hundreds of thousands of combat-ready troops and even more in reserve."
"I guess you haven't seen what magic can do yet." - Guiche said.
"Try it." - Werlan threatened him.
"Very good." - replied Guiche - "I, Guiche... OUUU!"
"Ouch!" - repeated Werlan.
Tabitha picked up the cane she had hit Guiche on the head with and said - "Diplomacy. Not a fight."
And so Tabitha left, leaving them stunned. But the argument didn't stop there anyway, it just died down in that particular place.
Meanwhile, Louise sat in the back. After her last failure in class, she was teased again, but it was one time too many. The Summoning Ceremony was about to take place, and with how badly she failed every spell she had ever cast, she was very worried. She wanted to study, but if she failed that exam, not even her mother's connections could keep her in school. Worse, she would be disinherited.
"Hi." - suddenly said some sorceress levitating upside down in front of her - "Something so depressed?"
"Never mind." - Louise said, wanting to avoid the subject.
"I think it is something to mind over." - said the sorceress - "You look like me when I have some problems with a spell."
"Really?" - Louise said, looking a bit surprised.
"Really." - said the sorceress, landing in front of her - "Once, I studied a certain spell for several months and it was very frustrating. I learned the theory very quickly, but I still failed. Several times I thought about giving up. Fortunately, I have a few friends who helped me change my perspective and noticed things that I missed. Thanks to this, it works perfectly now."
"Then it won't work for me." - said Louise, sitting down against the wall. She hoped it might help her, but just as quickly that hope left her.
"And why do you believe that?" - asked the sorceress, sitting down next to her.
"Because she's already tried it. My mother, sisters, father, countless teachers and students. They've all been trying to figure out why my spells always explode in my face. Literally. But they didn't succeed. And in a few days is the Summoning Ceremony. If I fail her, I'll be kicked out. And then..."
Suddenly the sorceress grabbed her shoulder and pulled her into a light embrace with one hand, wiping her tears with the other - "It's not your fault at all. And other people couldn't help you either. This magic system is too rigid for you."
"What are you talking about?" - Louise said, rubbing her eyes.
"All magic in your world, from what I've heard, is based on the 4 main elements, wind, water, fire, and earth, plus the legendary 5th, Void. In my dimension, we don't have this elemental division, and each mage expresses his abilities in his own unique way. We have a division into typical ones, such as water, but also more unusual ones, such as light and dark. And you, you have more potential than you think. I'll try to teach you some spells."
"Really?" - Louise said, standing up.
"Really." - MAGES. replied, also standing up - "But you'll have to try 100 percent."
MAGES. stretched her hand and Lousie took it and said - "That's the minimum expected of someone from House Vallière."
=location: Poznan, 54 days from the invasion=
"We are starting this meeting of the United Earth Goverman, European Sector." - said Dominika Sikorska - "First, the situation of our planet. Infrastructure, settling, and basic need."
"Our situation is stable." - said the first official - "We have reactivated a total of 80% of our railroads and roads to an acceptable condition. All people are finding housing and power plants are back in full operation. In short, the entire continent is provided with water, food, roofs over their heads, and electricity. From other sectors reports are similar. Overall, the situation is very good. We especially have to thank GA again for its technological and engineering solutions. Without them, I don't know if we'd even be halfway there."
"What about our ground forces?" - Dominika asked.
Ulari Valk began - "Our armed forces have grown to 90 million with more in varying degrees of training. We're trying to organize them somehow, but it's a nightmare. Our ammunition and vehicle production is back to normal, but we are forced to use lower quality equipment, so the effectiveness has decreased significantly. However, the production of everything has started to accelerate at dizzying speeds, and if everything goes well, we will be able to field up to 400 million troops. Their equipment will be weak in quality, but it will be fine."
"However, there was another problem." - said Vakhtang Markarian - "Some of our allies have some imperial ambitions towards our smaller allies. The incident in Romala in particular can be problematic. And don't even start with elves. He believes we shouldn't allow GU to hang out with the first contact. This could be bad for us."
"We already figured it out like a hundred times from a hundred different sources." - one of the officials said.
"Actually, I found a very interesting thing in recent research on these creatures that relates somewhat to this." - said scientist Angela Kenjou.
"Go ahead." - Dominika said.
"It seems that in each of these monsters made of humans, there is a high concentration of what we call, for now, 'Evil Energy'. We found that this is one of the main elements used to transform species into these monsters. Our GA allies refer to it as the equivalent of Negative Energy from their dimensions. It may even be the same, but our research into this is still in its early stages. In any case, this energy is generated by actions that are considered evil. Psychopaths, murderers, dictators, and the like that are huge sources of this energy. Our people have found in a population study that most, if not all, of these people have been eliminated. Potentially just for that energy."
"So all the 'bad humans' on the planet were taken and turned into these monsters?" - Ulari shortened.
"More or less." - said Angela - "Considering how much negative energy there is in the larger monster units, they have most likely been turned into the strongest strains."
"Suddenly, the reason why the whole planet decided to unite so easily became obvious." - Dominika said.
"But that still leaves the problem of new colonizers." - Vakhtang said - "If we don't close the portals after the war, they will try to take advantage of this and attack other, less developed dimensions. However, closing the dimensions will leave the problem that one of them will be able to try to open them on their own. Besides, we will leave our allies to their fate. The Paradis population can be wiped out as soon as we leave, unless they activate their WMD, destroying the world. And Marley has already taken that risk by killing a quarter of a million. Should I continue with problems?"
"I would like to propose 'The Legion' project again." - said Angela - "I know it was rejected before, but..."
"NO." - Dominika told her - "It's a resource waster and we don't have much of it right now. And that's without even starting with problems like the level of technology needed to do it."
"With all due respect, ma'am." said the first official - "But we can now save enough resources to start the project."
"And when it comes to technology issues, we can ask GA for help." - said Angela.
"The GA is as close to 'Utopia' as it gets, but I don't know if their help in your super-soldier project is a good idea." - Vakhtang said.
"We cannot rule out that over time we will acquire other technologies that can help us with this." - Ulari said - "Besides, Super-Soldiers can actually bring a high payback. If their combat effectiveness is as described here."
After a moment of silence, Dominika said - "Okay, you can start with this project as soon as I get approval from the leaders of other sectors. But results will be needed. We can't afford to waste anything."
"Yes, ma'am." - replied Angela.
"So, continuing..."
