Caroline stood by the shredder, holding the items that she had brought with her, which included some pictures of Tyler and the drawing Klaus had done for her the night of the ball at his mansion. She easily shredded Tyler's pictures, mostly because she knew that they were over for good. However, looking at Klaus' drawing, she found it difficult to shred it. She was so engrossed that she barely even noticed that Elena was standing there beside her until the brunette vampire spoke up.
"Tyler drew you a horse?"
Caroline looked at her friend and shook her head. "No, Klaus did." She looked at the picture again and sighed. "You know what? I can't do this. Tyler's pictures I can shred easily, but this? I'm going to leave. If anyone asks, tell them that I didn't feel good, okay?"
Not waiting for Elena to answer her, Caroline hurried out of the room and then the building, the drawing still in her hand. Apparently, coming to the Bitter Ball was a mistake. Once she exited the building, Caroline felt her tears stinging her eyes and once she was far enough away from the building, she sank to her knees and let a sob escape. What the hell did she almost do? She knew she loved Klaus, so what possessed her to want to shred the drawing that she had held onto for a year?
"What happened, love?"
Hearing that familiar accented voice startled her and Caroline looked over and saw Klaus kneeling beside her. What the hell was he doing here? "Klaus? But..."
Klaus placed his finger on her lips, shushing her. "How I'm here doesn't matter, love. What does matter is what happened to you to cause you to be so upset. Did anyone hurt you? Do I have to hurt them for you?"
"Nobody hurt me," she replied. "I...I just nearly did something stupid tonight."
Klaus was about to ask, but he didn't have to, because the answer was in her hand. "You nearly destroyed the drawing. But, why?"
"I don't know," said Caroline. "But, if you really want to know, there's this stupid event tonight for heartbroken single students called the Bitter Ball. Anyway, there's this paper shredder where you can shred the pictures of the people that have hurt you and I brought some pictures of Tyler, which I easily shredded, because I no longer want anything to do with that asshole."
"What possessed you to want to shred something from me?"
"I told you it was stupid," said Caroline. "Thankfully, something stopped me from going through with it. I...I think it was our connection." She sighed and placed a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Anyway, I feel like such an idiot for wanting to do it."
Klaus helped her to her feet. "Did you want to go somewhere and talk?
Caroline nodded. "I'd like that, thank you."
Klaus then gave her his arm, which she gladly took, and they walked off together. During the course of their walk, neither of them spoke, mostly because in that moment, words failed. That and the fact that Klaus would never force Caroline to say anything. He would let her decide when she was ready to talk, not before. Then again, he wasn't quite sure what to say, since he was still reeling from the fact that she nearly shredded the drawing he had done for her, the drawing that she had kept for all this time.
I understand the fact that she destroyed Tyler's pictures, since they're broken up for good, but I would think that she'd want to keep the drawing, since I had put a lot of effort into making it for her.
Finally, they came to a little place off campus, where they sat down on a bench. For the first several minutes or so, it was just as quiet as the walk here had been, neither of them moving or speaking. That is, until Caroline decided that she couldn't take the quiet anymore.
"I...I really didn't even want to go to that damn Bitter Ball."
Klaus looked at her. "You didn't? If that's the case, why did you?"
"I don't know, I just...thought that it would be fun," said Caroline. "Of course, how the hell could a party for heartbroken single people be fun? It kind of made me wish that we were back at your mansion in Mystic Falls, dancing and being happy. Hell, I wish we could go back to the Miss Mystic Falls pageant, where you played Keep Away with my application. That was the best day of life, even if it wasn't supposed to be."
Klaus placed his hand on top of hers. "I think about that day often. Seeing the smile on your face was worth more than all of the riches in this world. I wasn't lying when I said that you were full of light, because you are."
His words brought tears to her eyes again and instead of saying anything, Caroline threw herself into his arms, sobbing against his chest. Klaus hugged her to him, running his fingers through her hair, comforting her as best he could.
Note: Enjoy, lovelies! Keep the Klaroline faith! They will be together forever! Keep believing!
