"Is this a, uh, Bobby?"
He wasn't sure why that simple question made him feel sick to his stomach. "Yeah, who is this?"
"This is the Shawnee County Sheriff's office out of Kansas."
Bobby froze, this could not be good. "What happened."
"Are you familiar with a classic black chevy?"
"Yes. Why, did you find it?"
"Um, yes, we found it with a note addressed to you. It had your number."
"Where?" He snapped.
There was a moment of silence on the other end, "It was found on the edge of the Kansas River."
"You said there was a note." He hoped his voice didn't crack at the end. He was pretty sure it did.
"There wasn't much-"
"What did it say? Just- just read it to me."
The Man hesitated a moment before giving in, "Bobby, take care of her. And take care of Sammy. Dean."
Bobby let out a breath, feeling like the entire world was crashing around him.
"Did you- did you find-" He couldn't say it. He'd wondered, even considered the idea that Dean had- but he'd hoped and now-
"No, but from what we can tell the car has been parked there for at least a longer. We're not even sure where to look at this point."
"But you think he's dead."
A hesitant pause, "All the evidence points to it, I'm sorry sir."
"I'll be there to pick up the car tomorrow." And he slammed the phone down.
Bobby collapsed into the nearest chair feeling like his entire world had just been lost.

It was nine in the morning before Bobby pulled up to his house. Benny was going to continue looking. Bobby needed to get back to Sam.
The glass still littered the floor of the kitchen. Bobby felt another flare of anger. The least he could have done was clean up his own mess. He supposed Sam wasn't used to Dean not being there to clean up his messes.
"Sam!" He snapped.
The boy's head snapped up. He was sitting at the table, staring at a slip of paper.
"Bobby! Did you find him?"
"No." Was all he said. "What were you thinking?!"
"I-I wasn't. I didn't mean-"
"Well whether you meant or not it happened!"
"Yeah." He whispered. "Bobby, I messed up."
"Ya don't say."
"I was wrong. He- he got the money."
Bobby was shocked for a moment. Dean had actually done it? That was… remarkable. He must have been putting in a lot more extra hours at the shop. Bobby hoped that's all it had been.
"That's- that's what this was all about. I told him- told him he failed. That it was his fault. That he ruined everything. I-" he looked up at Bobby. "I told him that I wished Dad was back instead of him."
And while Bobby would never hit one of the boys, in that moment he was closer than he'd ever been.
"Go to your room, Sam."
"Bobby I'm sorry."
"I'm not the one you should be apologizing to! Go to your room. I need to make some phone calls."
Bobby watched Sam turn and could practically see the weight of the world on the kid's shoulders. He couldn't bring himself to even care.

"He's dead."
Should he have been that blunt? Probably not. But Bobby was barely holding it together himself.
There was silence on the other end.
"How?" Benny's voice cracked on the simple word.
"Police found his car at an overlook in Kansas. No body but-"
"It's been too long to know if they'll even find one."
"Going to pick up the car tomorrow. Need someone to go with me."
"I'll be at your place at 8:00."
"Yeah, good. Sounds- sounds good."
"It's not your fault.'
"He lived in my house. Sam is my responsibility. I even saw it happen the first time. I should have-"
"What? Watched him twenty-four seven? If you want to blame anyone, blame Sam."
"Dean's dead. I don't think it really matters who's fault it is. He's still dead."
"You tell the kid yet?" And he almost sounded sorry for him. But maybe it was just the fact that Dean was dead finally sinking in.
"No… I'll… I'll call him later. Not right now."
"I'll see you tomorrow."
Bobby wasn't sure he'd ever heard the young man's voice that soft.

"Bobby?"
"What, Sam." Bobby marked off another hospital name from his list.
"Any news?"
"No."
"Is Benny-"
"I'd stay away from Benny if I were you." The man had always been a loose canon. And now without Dean to keep him in check...
"Sonny?"
"Hasn't heard anything."
"This is my fault."
Bobby hesitated. "If you're wanting me to disagree with you, give it a couple more days."
"Yeah." Sam whispered.
"I'm sorry."
"So you've said."
"Did you try Pastor Jim?"
"He promised to keep an ear out. Jim is all about that clergy privacy stuff but I'm pretty sure he'd spill if he knew anything."
"Yeah."
"When are you leaving for D.C."
"We're supposed to leave on Wednesday but-"
"Then I'd get packing."
"But Bobby-"
"I know Dean's not hear to hold your hand and do your laundry but you're seventeen, I'm sure you can figure it out for yourself."
"Yeah. I-I'll go do that."
"Good idea."
~SPN~
"Bobby?"
"Hey, Son."
"Bobby what's wrong. Why are you calling me? Did you find him?"
He couldn't bring himself to answer for a moment. "How's the trip going?"
"Bobby, you're not calling to check up. What's wrong? What happened?"
"What time does your flight leave tomorrow?"
"6:15. I'll be there by 10:30. What's going on? What happened? Is it Dean?"
Bobby knew he couldn't hold off any longer. "They, uh, the police found his car."
"Where? Is he there? Is he okay?"
"Sam, Son, it was parked at a ledge. He- he wasn't there."
"No."
"Sam-"
"No he's not- he wouldn't- Bobby tell me he wouldn't." Sam was nearly hyperventilating. Bobby closed his eyes, he'd wanted to wait until the boy was home but knew the second Sam saw the impala he'd think it was Dean- not Dean's parting gift.
"I'm so sorry." And he was. Any residing anger had been pushed away by the resounding echo Dean being dead.
"No- Bobby- no. You- you said they didn't find him He could- he could still be alive- he could-"
"I just wanted to warn you before you got back. Me and Benny got the Impala and I didn't want you to see it and think-"
"He's not dead Bobby. He's not."
He couldn't listen to this. He couldn't deal with this right now. "Call me when you land." Was all Bobby could force himself to say before he hung up.
~SPN~
"I'm not going Bobby."
"Yes. You are."
"Dean's still missing. I'm not going on vacation while Dean is missing!"
"If you remember, Sam, Dean is missing because you chased him off!"
Sam stopped, clenching his jaw. "I know that Bobby! But how am I supposed to think about anything other than the fact Dean is gone?!"
"You're brother is gone because after nearly killing himself for two weeks to get you the money, after working out special arrangements with your teach, after you gave him nothing but threats and anger and abuse for two weeks, you're going on that trip. You owe it to Dean."
Sam deflated, "Bobby…"
"Go get your things. If you miss the plane I'll drive you there myself."
Sam gave Bobby his best kicked puppy impression before grabbing his bag and moping to the car.
