The scent of freshly baked honey bread wafted through the air, luring Cherry, a sly red fox, towards Banjo's cozy den. Cherry's nose twitched as she spotted a shimmering ruby on the doorstep, nestled beside a half-eaten cookie.
'What's this?' she mused, picking it up. 'A windragon ruby? Oy.'
The ruby hummed faintly in her paw, pulsating with an almost hypnotic energy. Cherry, ever the curious one, couldn't resist its allure. She pushed the door open a crack, hearing Banjo's sleepy grumble from inside.
'You're not gonna let me sleep until we do this, are you?' he mumbled, his voice thick with drowsiness.
Cherry couldn't help but grin. 'Not a wink~!'
She took a step inside, the ruby catching the light, illuminating the den in a strange, iridescent glow. Banjo, startled awake, sat up in bed, his brown fur ruffled.
'Cherry, what in the woods are you doing with that?' he asked, his eyes widening.
Suddenly, Cherry let out a shriek, dropping the ruby onto the wooden floor. The ruby shattered with a sickening crunch, spewing out a swirling vortex of crimson energy. An ethereal form, shimmering and vaguely dragon-like, emerged from the broken ruby, its eyes blazing with a dangerous light.
'What the?!' Cherry exclaimed, dodging the windragon spirit as it darted towards her.
The spirit, sensing Banjo's vulnerability, swooped down, entering his mouth with a flash of red light. Banjo gasped, his eyes rolling back.
Thirteen weeks had passed, and Cherry hadn't seen Banjo since. A gnawing worry had festered in her heart, her initial amusement replaced with a deep sense of guilt. Finally, she decided to check on him.
A handwritten note was pinned to his door: 'Go away! Leave me! Just run!'
Her heart dropped. She pushed the door open, her fear outweighing her hesitation.
Banjo sat there, his head in his paws, tears streaming down his face. His transformation was horrifyingly evident. His skin had turned a sickly white, jagged red stripes replacing his soft brown fur. Feathered wings, still raw and bloody, sprouted from his back. His muzzle was turning into a reptilian snout, his nose split and his neck elongated into a draconic curve. His belly rounded, reptilian nostrils appearing as he gasped for breath. Reptilian teeth replaced his normal ones, his gums bleeding profusely. His ears transformed into bird-like appendages, and tears streamed from his eyes. His paws merged, forming three clawed hands, and a reptilian tail grew from his backside, trailing blood. He was growing larger, becoming a monstrous hybrid, a windragon.
Banjo let out a roar, a primal cry that shook the very foundations of his den. Cherry screamed, the sight of her friend so utterly changed overwhelming her. He fell to the floor, causing a small earthquake.
Cherry, fueled by instinct and panic, punched Banjo's belly as hard as she could, attempting to expel the windragon spirit. But it was no use.
'You need to lose weight!' she yelled, her voice barely a whisper.
Banjo snorted, his eyes filled with a strange, reptilian glint. 'That's rude!' He grabbed Cherry, his monstrous claws scraping her fur. 'I'll squish you!'
Cherry, knowing she was outmatched, booped him playfully on the nose. 'Great, wait!'
She pulled out a small hand mirror from her satchel and focused it on Banjo, catching his reflection. He gasped, his reptilian eyes widening in horror.
'AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! I'M A MONSTER!!' he screamed, his voice filled with despair.
He landed on the ground, causing another, more powerful earthquake. Tears streamed down his face, his monstrous features contorting in agony.
'Oh no, don't cry,' Cherry said, her voice trembling. 'You're not a monster.'
