Connor ran down one of the small thin alleyways between two buildings. He was by himself and was trying to hide from the mob of Marines who were chasing him. He ducked into one of the buildings back doors and waited for the Marines to pass.
After the Straw Hats, grand entrance to Enis Lobby via Rocket Man literally flying into the Island and landing in the town square. The Marines had naturally congregated there and tried to arrest the Straw Hats.
However, at that moment the Galley-La Company along with the Franky Family had burst in after taking down two giants with them and engaged almost more than half of the marines that had surrounded the crew.
The crew had beaten only a few and cleared a path before running off into the maze of buildings to find Robin and catch up with Luffy. Naturally, the Marines had followed them but it was not as much as it could have been since Luffy had been running around for a good ten minutes before the crew arrived and now the Marines also had to deal with not only the invading Pirate crew but also the Franky Family and the Foremen of the Galley-La company.
Unfortunately, in the ensuing chaos, the crew had become separated. Zoro was the first one to disappear, Nami tried to evade the marines by running down a random alley and Sanji had followed her, Sogeking had stayed back to help the Galley-La foremen and Franky Family, Chopper was unable to keep up with Nami and Sanji and had made several wrongs turns and had the unfortunate luck to have building collapse and block his path.
Connor had only narrowly avoided being caught under it and judging by how loud he could here Luffy's cries he suspected that the rubber Captain had caused it to fall.
Due to this Connor had lost sight of his friends and after trying to backtrack and find an alternative route Connor very quickly had become lost. Connor listened and once he was sure the Marines were gone he came out of his hiding place and let out a sigh.
He was no closer to finding Robin and now he had lost sight of the rest of the crew. He doubted he would be able to find his way back to where Rocket Man had landed and he knew it was only a matter of time before the Maries found him and would restart their pursuit of him.
Connor knew he would have to use this time to find Robin and he also knew the only way he would be able to do that on his own was by using his sight; however he didn't know where he was going and because of the entrance the Straw Hats had made he could not play himself off as a hostage and ask the Marines for help.
Ever since meeting Edward in the Rainbow Mist and learning more about his gift, Connor had been practicing in secret. He would use it at night when no one was around and switch it on and off during the day when no one was looking. Edwards' advice had never left the boys mind and he had dedicated himself to making his gift stronger, but so far he had not noticed any change when he used his second sight.
Connor knew it would take time to develop, but he had thought he would be a lot further along by now. However every time Connor used his second sight, Edward's warning would always flash through his mind. He had been warned that he would be killed on sight if any Marines or anyone from the government found out about his gift, he had also been warned that there were bad people who would do anything to get their hands on it. Connor knew first hand that the world was filled with bad people and he had made the decision not to use his sight unless he absolutely needed it.
Ever since joining Luffy's crew Connor had not used it as much as he had before with his previous masters, he didn't need it to tell what the Straw Hats intentions towards him were or whether they were good people or not.
He knew if he used it on Enis Lobby he would be exposing himself to unnecessary danger, but Connor wanted to see Robin again, he wanted her back as much as anyone on the Luffy's crew. So he decided that the risk was worth it.
Connor activated his sight hoping to see the yellow trail but he saw nothing, no trail and because there was no one around he didn't see any red colours. Upon not seeing the yellow trail he shifted his eyes back to their normal colour.
He knew his sight was still developing and he had hoped the extra time he'd been using it would have made it easier for the yellow trail to appear but clearly, that was not the case.
"Come on...show me where Robin is," Connor whispered.
Connor activated his sight again but the result was the same and he switched it off again.
"Please...show me where they have taken her," Connor said desperately and he activated his sight again but nothing had changed.
"Stupid second sight won't even work...what's the point of me having this power if I can't use it," Connor cried out in frustration "It showed me the way to Luffy when that bird flew off with him...so why not now? What's different now?"
Connor let out an irritated sigh. He slumped down against the wall of the building. He pulled his knees into his chest and tried to remember how he made the yellow trail appear in the past. He'd only seen the yellow trail a few times in his life and each time had been in a different situation, the last time it had appeared was just after he had met Luffy and Zoro; when Luffy had been carried off by the giant bird back in the east blue.
"We'd lost sight of Luffy and Zoro was dealing with Buggy's pirates," Connor remembered "after that, we didn't know where the bird had gone,"
Connor tried to remember what he had felt once he and Zoro had lost sight of the Rubber captain. He remembered feeling scared, alone and most of all fear. Though at the time it had more to do with the fact he was alone on a small boat with Zoro, he did not know or trust the swordsman back then and feared what Zoro would do since Luffy was no longer around.
Connor had used his sight and seen the yellow trail, while he didn't see it for very long it was long enough to get a heading and in the end, he and Zoro had found Luffy.
"I just want her back," Connor said sadly "I don't want to lose anyone else,"
He thought about Robin and how she made her deal with the government to save the crew from CP9. Despite the fact it would most likely mean her death, Connor didn't want to lose Robin too, he could not save his own mother but Connor was determened to save Robin. After all he was older and stronger now, Connor decided that he would do everything in his power to help Robin. But in order to save her he needed to find her first, he knew he could.
Connor took a deep breath and closed his eyes and focsued his thoughts soley on Robin.
"Please…show me the way," he prayed before he opened his eyes, activating his sight once more.
The first thing Connor noticed was the bright yellow trail was there in front of him and it was leading off further into the Island. Connor blinked and stared at it for a few seconds and unlike last time the trail did not disappear after a few seconds.
Connor smiled and with new found confidence he stood up and moved to follow it; however, the moment he did he his vision went back to normal and he felt sudden dizziness in his head.
"Ow...What was that...why did my sight suddenly cut off?" Connor wondered "it's never cut off like that before,"
Connor looked up around and he suddenly realised that with his sight no longer active he could no longer see the path to Robin.
"Oh no the trail," Connor panicked. He quickly activated his sight again and breathed a sigh of relief that by some miracle the yellow trail was still there.
Connor shifted his sight back and forth a few times to make sure the trail stayed. Finally, he studied the trail and when he was ready he switched his sight off and became to follow it, every now and then he would stop and use his sight to find the trail, memorise it and then turn it off to continue.
Connor found that if he did this he was not thrown out of the darkened world he saw with his sight on and while he knew he should be concerned that the trail may not reappear, however, he refused to entertain those thoughts of losing the yellow path before him and focused solely on finding Robin.
He didn't think of anything else, he didn't think of how Luffy and the others would find her, he didn't think about how the Franky Family and Galley-La company were fearing and he did not think of CP9 who would undoubtedly try and stop the crew from taking Robin back.
Connor followed the trail stopping every so often to make sure he was going the right way. A few times he made the wrong turn or had to go back but no matter how often he switched between his normal vision and his second sight; the yellow trail always remained. Connor had just stooped and activated his sight to check the trail when a man in a white hood suddenly dropped in front of him; blocking the yellow path. The man landed in a crouched position and Connor stared at him with wide eyes.
The man like everyone Connor had seen with his second sight had a coloured aura, however, his aura was not Blue like the Straw Hats and it was not Red like he expected it to be. It was Yellow, like the trail Connor was following. For a brief moment Connor thought the yellow trail was leading to this man however the boy could see that the trail continued on past him.
One minute earlier
The man in the white hood ran across the rooftops, leaping from one to the next; desperately heading for the entrance to the Island. After he had seen the arrival of the Straw Hat Pirates he immediately headed for the Islands only entrance and exit. With the arrival of the straw hats, it would only be a matter of time before the Sea Train left Puffing Tom left in order to trap the Straw Hats on the Island.
The only other way off was through the Gates of Justice and the man in white had no desire to leave that way.
No the man in white would be on the Sea Train before it left. One good thing about the Pirates invading was Straw Hat Luffy had caused every single Marine and Government agent on the Island to chase and focus on capturing them. So as long as he was careful, he could slip away unseen and no one would ever know he was there.
Believing the outer edge of the small labyrinth town safer, easier to navigate and less likely be seen; the man ran along the rooftops until he approached a gap too large for him to jump safely. The Man slowed down and looked around for an alternative route but found none.
"Cazzo," he swore. He did not want to leave the safety of the rooftops as he would most likely be seen and he really had no desire to be mistaken as one of Straw Hats crew.
He did not need that kind of attention and he was pretty sure his partner and several other people he knew would literally kill him if that happened. The man looked up and down the street and found that there were no marines around. He also spied the Alley behind the building and headed for it.
Deciding the best option was to use an Allway due to it not being visible and he could use the back of the building for not only cover but also there would likely be boxes and Trash he could use to get a head start on his climb back to the safety of the rooftops.
Once he was above the Alleyway he looked down and did not find any marines, the man in white climbed over the edge of the building and started his descent. Once he was a safe distance off the ground he jumped off the wall and landed in a crouched position in the middle of the alleyway.
The same time he landed a young boy rounded the corner and suddenly stopped at seeing the man land in front of him.
The man's head instantly snapped to look directly at Connor as he was fully aware the boy was there, his hands instantly went for his weapons; however second the man in white looked in Connors direction their eyes met. The man in white let out a gasp in surprise and stepped back in shock upon seeing the boys yellow eyes.
However the boy took it as an act of aggression, he quickly turned around and ran off.
"Wait, little boy," the man called out, reaching out his arm after him but it was too late. He had already run off.
The man sighed, he looked back in the direction he was heading, he could leave right now. It would be easy to get away with all the guards and marines distracted. He could just keep going, get back to the roofs, make his way to the Sea Train and hide in one of the cars until it left.
However he could not leave the boy he saw alone especially now since he had seen the boys eyes, this Island was filled with Marines. If any of the marines saw his eyes he would be shot on sight and it would be a very painful death if CP9 got a hold of him.
"Merda," the man hissed and ran after the child.
The man in white ran after Connor and however the boy was aware that he was being chased and tried desperately to lose him. After a brief chase, the man in white decided that it would be better to follow the boy from the rooftops, if the boy merely ran around trying to avoid him then he would surly run into the Marines. However, if the man in white stayed out of sight he could follow at a safe distance and when the child reached his destination he could corner him and talk to him.
The man in white was also curious as to what a child was doing on Enis Lobby to begin with and where he was going. He wondered if he was part of the invading Pirate Crew, but he quickly pushed those thoughts aside.
Eventually, the boy stopped running, he looked around and when he was certain he had lost the Man in White his eyes flashed gold again and he ran off again. The man in white followed closely from the rooftops, glancing off in the distance every so often as buildings fell and were destroyed.
Soon the man in white stopped as the boy he was following exited the labyrinth of buildings and headed for a large building with massive stone doors. It looked like the entrance way to a castle and above the entryway, the words Court House were clearly visible.
"The Court House," the man in white asked himself "What reason could he possibly have for wanting to go there?"
Once the boy was in front of the building he stopped running and panted heavily, clearly, he was out of breath.
The man in white watched the boy take a moment to catch his breath, he was still confused as to why the child he had been following came to the Court House. He watched as the child used his sight again and he was relived as a moment later the boy walked away from the Court House doors.
"Now where is he going?" the man wondered. He watched the boy wander round the side of the big building.
Curiously the man in white quickly made his way over to the front of the courthouse, he knew moving was dangerous as there was nowhere for him to hide or use as cover and the sounds of Battle were getting closer.
He pressed himself against and peered around the corner. Leaning up against the side of the building he spied a lift mechanism that looked like it was used to lift building supplies. There were boxes and other supplies leaned up against the wall, he also spied a cliff that seemed to have no safety railing. The man in white made a mental note to stay away from the edge as he had no desire to fall.
He watched as the boy looked up at the lift curiously and give the rope a test pull, the boy then took a few steps back and looked up towards the top of the Court House.
The man's eyes flashed suddenly turned gold and he saw that the boy was glowing Yellow. He also saw a thin yellow trail leading up the wall of the Building and a ghostly figure of the child run towards the lift and then he flew up into the air.
"Oh no…no no no no no," the man panicked as the gold faded from his eyes. He quickly came out of his hiding place. Forgetting about staying hidden, the boy looked at him.
Startled he quickly dashed towards the lift.
"Wait don't it's…" the man started, but it was too late. The child had cut the rope, he went flying up the side of the building.
"Dangerous," the man fished too late "Merda,"
The man looked up the pure whitely painted wall, his eyes scanning critically for a way up.
"Well…that is inconvenient," the man commented "and a rather big climb,"
The man in white let out a sigh and began his ascent up the side of the Courthouse, using unrepaired small holes and other bricks as handholds and making his way around and up the building.
"Go to Enis Lobby and sneak in Altair said, it will be easy he said," the man grumbled as he climbed "Next time Altair gives me an easy mission that involves sneaking into a heavily guarded government Island I will tell him to do it himself,"
Once the man was about a quarter of the way up he heard a commotion and looked back down towards the massive entrance. He saw a large group of people arrive in front of the Courthouse. None of them saw him because they were focused on the massive door in front of them and didn't bother to look up; after all, they had no reason to suspect that someone would be climbing the side of the building.
"They're here too," he commented.
He watched them for a bit as the large group tried to push the massive doors open and when they didn't budge one of them sliced the bottom part of it away with ease; creating an opening.
"I am glad I am not down there," the man said as he watched the group rush into the courthouse.
He continued his way doing his best to ignore the loud crashes and sounds of battle that he could hear from within the building. He kept climbing until he came to a long balcony where the lift the boy had taken
There was an open side entrance and the man in white carefully pushed the door open and went inside. He found himself in what appeared to be a large storeroom. It was filled with various different construction supplies, barrels of weapons, boxes of cannon balls, unused cannons and all manner of other things. The man in white looked around and saw that there was only one other door in this room and the only other exit apart from the one he had entered was a set of stairs leading up around a corner.
"Now where did that boy go?" the man wondered.
He glanced over at the only door into the room but as far as he could tell it had not been opened recently, so he turned his attention to the staircase that led up to the next level. The man in white ran up the stairs and soon found himself on another smaller balcony overlooking the Island. While the view was quite spectacular he was more concerned that he had hit a dead end and the boy he was chasing was nowhere in sight.
"He couldn't have gone that way," the man commented as he looked over the balcony at the massive drop "Which leave either he went through the other door downstairs or..."
The man then turned and looked up towards the top of the building. It was fairly close and he spied a couple of wooden boxes that could easily be used to climb up to the top.
The man used the boxes to quickly scale the last of the building and grab hold of the edge of one of the gaps in the tooth-shaped parapet that decorated the top of the Courthouse. He peeked over the edge just in time to see the boy he had been chasing being thrown to the ground by a member of CP9.
Connor grunted as he hit the roof tiles and looked up at Blueno, the CP9 agent stood over him looking very unimpressed. Connor backed away a bit in fear, he had been the first to arrive on the roof of the building and had found the agent waiting for whoever showed up. Connor thought he could beat the man and earlier in the fight the CP9 agent had displayed a devil fruit power, Connor believed he could take the agent down but he had been unable to land more than one or two hits on him.
Blueno had used his power to out mauver the boy and stay out of the reach of his sword. What made it worse was even when he had hit the CP agent his sea stone blade hadn't even left a scratch or torn his cloths. All it had done was force the agent away from him and to change his fighting tactics.
"I have to say I am disappointed. I expected more from those under a man who took down a Shibaki," Blueno said.
In a desperate attempt to buy some time Connor lunged his sword forward, hoping to injure the man. Blueno, however, blocked the blade with the soul of his thick shoes.
"That blade is troublesome for any fruit user," Blueno stated and in one swift motion, the CP9 agent kicked the blade out of the boy's hand and skidded across the rooftop out of his reach.
Connor looked over at his sword and then back up at Blueno and stared at him in fear.
"You know I don't feel comfortable hurting children and quite frankly leaves a very sick feeling in my stomach," Blueno said.
He bent down and grabbed Connor by the front of his shirt so Connor could not get away and raised his fist.
"However I don't have that issue when dealing with those who would bring shame and dishonor to the World Government and disrupt our hard earned justice," Blueno said coldly.
Connor closed his eyes and waited for the CP agent to finish him off however the pain never came. Connor did, however, feel his shirt was shaking, the boy opened his eyes and saw that Blueno's hand was indeed shaking and he looked up to see the man Connor saw in town standing behind Blueno holding his arm back preventing him from finishing Connor off.
The same man who had been chasing him throughout Enis Lobby.
"You shouldn't pick on kids," the man said in a thick Italian accent.
Without warning the man twisted the man's arm and jabbed the CP agent in the back with his free hand. Blueno cried out in pain and buckled under the attack, he was forced to release Connor and the man in white twisted into him and threw the CP agent away from Connor. Blueno stumbled but quickly regained his balance and started at the new comer. The man in white looked down at Connor.
"Are you hurt?" he asked.
"N…N…No…Not really," Connor answered, he did not know why but he got the feeling it would be a very bad Idea to lie to this man. It wasn't entirely a lie, Blueno had injured him quite a bit but it was nothing Connors Brand wouldn't heal and he could already feel it working.
Connor had been more surprised at how tough Blueno was and that his Seastone Balde did not seem to affect him as it had other devil fruit users.
The man nodded smile before drawing his own sword and turning his attention to Blueno.
"I give you this one chance. Leave now or die," The man in white said in a very serious tone and he pointed his sword out at Blueno.
"You know I can't do that," Blueno responded "especially now that you have shown up. Soru,"
Blueno suddenly vanished from sight, Connor looked around widely. The CP9 agent had used this against him and the boy had no Idea where the agent would reappear. The man in white, however, let out a sigh.
"Very well," the man in white responded. He took two steps away from Connor and moved his sword over his shoulder behind him, angling so it covered his head and the top of his back. A spilt second later Blueno re-appeared and tried to attack the man but it was blocked by the man's sword.
"But just remember…I gave you the chance to leave with your life," the man in white said. His voice held a deadly tone and he did not even glance at Blueno.
Bluenos eyes widened in and he disappeared again, and re-appeared in front of the man in white and began to violently attack him. However, the man in white merely shifted his body and maneuvered around each strike. Easily dodging each attack and no matter hard or how fast Blueno tried the man in white was never once hit nor did he raise his sword to block any of the strikes.
"Hold still," Blueno hissed "How are you avoiding this…I'm using Soru to increase the speed of my strikes?!"
"You're too slow and easy to read," the man in white responded "An assassins should be able to adapt to any opponent. No matter what their speed is,"
As if to prove his point, the man in white suddenly sidestepped completely out of the path of Bluenos path as the CP9 agent luged forward. Bluenos eyes tracked the man's movement as the man in white raised his sword.
"TEKKAI!" Blueno cried, his body hardened and he brought his arms up to absorb the incoming strike.
The force of the blow pushed the Blueno to the opposite side of the Battlement, leaving a trail in the tiles and when he stopped he fell to his knees and started coughing. The front of this suit was completely obliterated leaving his bare chest exposed.
Connor did not know who this man was or how he had managed to bypass Bluenos impressive speed and defense but he could see that Blueno was afraid…no he was terrified of the man in front of him.
"H…How…How did you…" Blueno coughed.
"Break your Tekkai? It's rather easy to bypass," the man in white claimed cockily "now imagine what that would have felt like if I wasn't using the back of my blade,"
"The…the back of his blade?" Connor gasped. That meant that the man in white was either holding back or had no intention of fighting Blueno seriously and was toying with the agent.
Blueno seemed to have a similar thought to Connor and he pushed himself to stand up. Blueno raised his arm and circle appeared in front of him and Blueno pulled it open to a reveal a strange green world. Blueno smiled, he was looking down the top of the man's head and it was unguarded.
"Hmm…is that a devil fruit power?" the man in white asked.
"Watch out, he said he ate the Doa-Doa No mi(Door-Door Fruit)" Connor claimed "He used it on me during our fight,"
"The one that creates doors?" the man asked, without taking his eyes off the CP9 agent "that's an annoying one. But won't be a problem,"
"You know nothing of what I can do with this power," Blueno claimed.
Blueno knew since he had opened the door in front of him that the man in white would be unable to see through it and now all he had to do was launch a high-speed attack at him through his door and it would come out on the other side with the same velocity with the added bonus of it being launched at point blank range.
"That may be the case but…." The man in white said and he thrust his sword into the air above him.
As Blueno launched his attack his arm was sliced by the blade as it came through the door and pierced his shoulder. Blueno cried out in pain and the man pulled his sword back before the door could close.
"The thing about doors is once opened, they can be entered both ways," the man in white smirked.
Blueno glared at the man as he nursed his injured shoulder, he felt incredibly weak after the sword had pierced his shoulder. Once he felt his strength come back he launched himself into the air.
"GEPPO!" he cried out as he stepped on the very air itself and he got higher and higher.
"Oh, leaving so soon are we?" the man in white asked as he watched Blueno ascend into the sky.
Blueno kept going higher and higher, once he was high enough he used the same technique to launch himself back down towards where he had been fighting.
"Tekkai," He cried and his body hardened "Air Door,"
A door opened far beneath him and as he flew towards it gaining both speed and momentum. When he entered it he was shot the other side like a missile and propelled himself towards the man in white with his fist outstretched.
The man in white raised his hand that was covered with the metal glove and Blueno slammed into it. The result caused a massive shockwave that blew Connor back against the wall of the battlements and the man's white robes blew widely in the wind. However, when the shockwave died down the man in white had not moved an inch while Bluenos hand was shaking in the man's closed metal-gloved hand.
The man's hood had come off reviling his features; the man looked to be older than Robin, but not by much. He looked late twenties, his hair was short and a small beard growing around his mouth with a scar just above his upper lip parted some of his facial hair.
"You…you're…you're….you're a…." Blueno stuttered in both shock and pure terror upon seeing the man's face, but he could not find the words.
The man in white narrowed his eyes; he raised his sword above his head and swiftly brought it down slicing Blueno clean across his chest. Bluenos eyes rolled to the back of his head and the CP9 agent fell face first at the man's feet; blood leaked out of his wound.
"Like I said, annoying but not a problem," the man claimed as he looked down at Blueno's unmoving form and he sheathed his sword.
The man in white gave the CP9 a light nudge with his boot and nodded in satisfaction that Blueno would not be getting up again. He then turned and started walking back towards Connor.
Connor stared at the approaching man as he pulled his hood back on. He did not know who this man was or how he had managed to by bass Bluenos impressive speed and defense. Not only had he been able to see through and counter everything that Blueno had thrown at him but while watching the fight he could that Blueno was afraid of this man.
And once his hood had come off Blueno's had become downright terrified, it was like he realised that he was fighting someone he could never ever hope to defeat and the man in front of him had brought the terrified agent down in one single strike of his sword. Connor had always believed that Zoro was the strongest swordsman, as Zoro had only ever lost a fight to one man: Mihawk.
But seeing the man in white fight, Connor got the feeling that Zoro like Blueno would not be able to defeat him. Watching the fight, Connor had noticed that the man in white had only ever reacted after Blueno moved first. Indicating that he was not fighting at full strength, more like he was testing Blueno; waiting to see the extent of the agents' skill and power.
The man stopped in front of Connor and stood over him, looking down on the boy, his hood obscured his eyes making him look more terrifying. Connor glanced at his sword which was still out of reach before he looked up at the man in front of him.
'Would he be able to beat Mihawk?' Connor wondered. But Connor knew one thing, even if he had his sword there was no way he would be able to defeat this man.
"Who…who are you?" Connor asked softly.
"My name Is Ezio Auditore," Ezio introduced "and we need to talk about your eyes,"
