The sun was just setting in New York as an old red pickup truck rumbled into the city limits. At the wheel was a girl with blonde hair and a black Stetson cowboy hat on her head, and in the passenger seat was a little brunette girl in a booster seat. In the truck's bed were two boys, one African-American with dreadlocks, and the other a Caucasian boy with slightly tanned skin, short black hair, and blue eyes with glasses.
"Here we are. New York City at last," the first boy mused, turning to the girl. "So... if there is any Hamato Clan here, how are we gonna find 'em?"
"Shouldn't be too hard," the girl replied with a Southern twang to her voice. "From what I've heard, Yoshi's kin stand out in a crowd."
"Real ninjas…" the little girl grinned. "We're gonna meet real ninjas! Isn't that cool, Jesse?"
She got no response.
"Jesse?"
"Hey Jess, you…" the driver turned around. "Oh, boy."
The second boy was sitting down, squeezing a stress ball so fast, it sounded like an over-caffeinated mouse.
"Whoa there." The first boy put his hands over Jesse's. "Hey, come out of your head, alright? Jamie's talking to you."
"Hmm?!" Jesse perked, looking around. "What?"
"You fell into your head again. Jamie was trying to talk to you."
"Oh… sorry."
"Jesse, were you on the Interwebs again?" Jamie asked, equally nervous and chastising.
"N-No…" Jesse looked away. "I'm just… getting a little antsy, that's all. This city is called the Big Rotten Apple for a reason. Lotta crazy shhhhtuff...crazy shtuff happening here."
"I know," the older girl nodded. "All the talk about mutants and aliens."
"And you really think your old man's old gang runs here?" the first boy asked. "Like, for real?"
"I've heard the news. Ninja weapons bearing the same flower crest my daddy had everywhere. His clan is in New York. His last wish was that I complete my training with them."
"For however much that's worth," Jesse mumbled under his breath.
"Jesse!" Jamie scolded. "Be nice!"
"Once we get to the city, we ask around," said the older girl. "See if we can track 'em."
"If we're lucky, maybe we can find a case or two while we're here." The first boy looked at Jesse with a concerned expression. "If anything, it'll give Jesse here something to focus on."
Meanwhile, on Canal Street, the clan was fretting over little Airi. She lay in her bed, sweating and panting as Erika gently laid a cool compress on her forehead. Kumo was perched by her side, holding her hand.
"I don't get it…" she muttered. "Aside from a fever, I'm not getting any symptoms. She hasn't been bitten by anything, and I'm not detecting any toxins in her blood."
Kumo looked up. "Maybe the turtles can help figure something out?"
"I already called them," Tai replied. "They should be here soon."
As if on cue, the Hamato/Lee family arrived, entering the room.
"We came as soon as we could," Kagome told them.
Donnie was by Airi's side in an instant. He lay a hand on her forehead, cringing.
"She's burning up," he reported.
"I've tried everything…" Erika said. "I can't figure out what's wrong. She just came into the living room, sweating like crazy and saying she had a migraine."
Several members of the group wrung their hands, visibly nervous. It seemed to worsen whatever Airi was going through; she began breathing harder, a hand going to her chest in pain. Hisako, who was watching from the corner of the room, picked up some of her thoughts.
"So loud... too much…"
Brow furrowed, Hisako approached, Midnight trailing close behind. "Airi... where does it hurt?"
Airi tapped her chest, cringing. Erika immediately got to work unbuttoning her pajama top, everyone averting their eyes. Erika gave them a look.
"Oh, get your heads out of the gutter, you guys! It's a medical exam and she's freaking eight!"
With that, she pulled open Airi's top. Everyone recoiled at what was revealed: glowing purple markings wrapping around her upper torso, all extending from a sphere-shaped mark right above her heart.
"Holy Chalupa…" Donnie managed.
"Guys…" Karai began, "Are those what I think they are?"
Leo nodded. "Ninpo marks."
"But... that's impossible!" Tai insisted. "She's eight! She doesn't even have a weapon yet!"
"We've been training our asses off to unlock our Ninpo, and she just gets it?" Jade demanded.
"She's a prodigy," Asuka mused.
"If it's her Ninpo, why is it making her so sick?" Vee asked.
Hisako thought for a moment before snapping her fingers. She waved Mikey over.
"Mikey, sit down and get comfortable," she instructed. "Everyone else, focus on calming your minds."
Mikey raised an eyebrow, but shrugged and did so regardless. Hisako picked up Airi, setting her in his lap.
"Remember when I was really little and still having nightmares? How you'd get me to calm down?"
Getting her intent, Mikey started gently rocking Airi in his arms, petting her hair and humming. Midnight trotted over as well, laying her head on the girl's legs. Slowly, Airi began to relax, the tension in her face lessening.
"It's working…" Erika noticed.
"She's an empath," Hisako explained.
"You mean... like you?" Mizuki asked.
"Yes and no. Instead of thoughts, she reads emotions. She got overwhelmed by everyone's negative feelings. But Mikey here, he's basically a shining ball of kindness and positivity. Exactly what she needs."
Makoto winced. "So... with us freaking out and worrying, did we make it worse?"
Hisako nodded. "Unfortunately. Luckily for us, Mikey used to do this for me when the world got too loud. He's an expert at calming troubled souls"
"Oh yeah," Kagome smiled. "Out of all of us, he was always the best at calming her down."
"He's warm," Airi noted, sounding genuinely relieved.
"How do you feel?" Erika questioned.
"Much better, thanks."
"So, what's it like?" Tai asked.
Airi began to pet Midnight, trying to work out how to explain it.
"Um... it's like... everyone has a light. Right here." She placed a hand over her heart. "It's bright and it sings. And it... changes color, going darker or brighter and sprouting... spikes or something depending on what you're feeling and how much. Does that make sense?"
"Yeah," Tai nodded. "I think so."
"So, what do we look like?" Mikey asked eagerly.
Airi looked them over slowly. "Leo's is steady and blue, like water. Mikey, yours is big, orange, and bright, like a sun. Raph's is red, and kinda spiky and loud. Donnie's is purple electricity and feels like it's buzzing. Vee is steady like Leo, but warm like Mikey. Hisako-"
She paused as she looked at Hisako, seeing nothing but a swirling black void. No sound, no light. Just... black.
"What about me?" Hisako asked.
"It's… a black hole."
That got everyone looking at Hisako in concern. Airi looked up at her for what felt like the first time. A smile that didn't look real. Empty eyes.
"How... I can't sense anything."
Hisako sighed.
"Yeah… that sounds about right." She ruffled Airi's hair. "I promise, I'm okay."
Airi perked in realization. "Oh... it's because of what happened to you before Master Splinter took you in, right? The parts of the story Mom had me leave the room for?"
Everyone cringed at that.
"You really are too smart for your own good sometimes," Hisako mused.
"Airi…" Oyuki began, "Do you know what depression is?"
Airi shook her head, so Oyuki explained as best she could.
"It's... an illness that attacks your mind instead of your body. I was like that when Yukio found me in Japan. I got help, have a support system, and am on the road to recovery. But with some people... it never really goes away."
Airi looked at Oyuki. While there was a small black void in the middle of her core, the rest was a similar spiky red to Raph. She then looked back at Hisako and that all-consuming void. With an almost determined expression, she hopped off of Mikey's lap, hugging Hisako.
"Oh, Airi…" Hisako slowly returned the hug. "I promise I'll be fine."
"I see it now," Airi said. "You're always sick and hurting inside. But... I'm here for you, Hisako. We all are. You know that, right?"
"I do…" Hisako's hug tightened. "And that's why I get up every morning. Depression is a yawning void that can never be filled... and sometimes, that void consumes you. But I stare into that void every day, little breeze, and I choose not to fall."
Airi nodded at that, smiling a bit. Then, she caught a flicker of something in the window. Something that made her cringe. Midnight seemed to catch on to her unease because she started growling at the window.
"Someone's out there..." she reported. "Blood red… feels wrong… so wrong…"
Everyone looked out the window, seeing three shadows: two male, and one female. Moving slowly, Leo slowly slid another window open. Before anyone could do anything, Kumo sprang out, on the attack. He jumped on one of the figures.
"Spider Strike!"
Kumo beat on one of the figure's head and neck area as he tried to toss him off. Finally, he yanked his head to the side, sinking his fangs into his shoulder. A gun-cock sounded. Everyone gasped to see the other figure had pulled a pistol, aiming at Kumo.
"Get the hell off him, bugfuck!" he yelled.
"Oh no you don't!"
Hisako managed to TK shove the gun just as it fired, so Kumo only got nicked in one of his legs. He hissed, falling to the ground. Immediately, the one he was attacking cringed, going limp as a noodle and slumping to the ground.
"Carter?!" the girl cried.
In an instant, the turtles surrounded the group, getting a good look at the figures, two boys and a girl. The boy Kumo had bitten was African-American, dressed in a yellow T-shirt under a black jacket and blue jeans, with a shark tooth necklace around his neck.
The girl had Asian facial features, but long blonde hair tied in a ponytail with a red ribbon and green eyes, signifying her as biracial. She wore a black Stetson cowboy hat on her head, a blue denim jacket over a black shirt and matching black skirt. Around her waist was a brown belt with a shuriken-shaped belt buckle, black boots with yellow lily designs covered her feet, and around her neck was a purple bandana.
The second boy had tanned skin, short, black hair, and blue eyes with glasses. He was wearing a white, long-sleeved button shirt under a black duster, a black ribbon tie, a green vest, and black slacks.
"Drop your weapons and surrender," Leo ordered.
The second boy scowled.
"Surrender this, shitpickle!" He took aim with his gun, only for Raph's sai to embed in the barrel, causing him to recoil in pain as he dropped it. "Motherfffff..."
"Jesse, stop!" the girl cried. "You're making it worse!"
"Now, we're being reasonable here," said Leo. "Put your weapons down. Slowly."
The girl slowly reached into a holster around her hips, pulling out a revolver using just two fingers. She slowly put it down on the ground. Hisako pulled it over with telekinesis, quickly unloading it. Donnie took the gun from her as Erika gathered the bullets.
"Kumo!" Airi ran over to him. "Kumo, are you okay?"
Kumo nodded, holding his injured leg while whimpering. "I'm not squished…"
"Let me see." As Erika tended to him, they turned back to the others.
"Okay," Leo began. "Judging by your accent, you're not from around here. Mind telling us why you're here in New York?"
"We were sent here to find the Hamato Clan," the girl explained. "It was my father's dying wish."
Leo looked the girl over, taking a close look at the bandana around her neck and noticing for the first time that it was embroidered with the Hamato Clan crest.
"For what?" Vee demanded. "To kill us?"
"No, of course not! My daddy was part of your clan before he moved to Texas!"
"You'll understand if we're skeptical," Tai told her. "Lurking outside our apartment? Spying on us? Shooting at a kid?"
"A looney spider-kid who attacked us first!" Jesse snapped.
"You made Airi cry!" Kumo shot back.
Jesse sputtered in shock. "The fffff...are you talking about!? We literally just got here! We didn't do jack shit!"
"He's the one," Airi pointed at Jesse.
"Huh?" Jesse let out. "What are you…?"
"The one with the wrong aura, the scary, bloody one." She clung to Hisako. "It's big and red…like, blood dripping everywhere. And it's covered in big, sharp, pointy, spikes…and it's making a deep, low rumbling noise."
"Rumble?" Mikey cut in. "Like thunder?"
Airi shook her head. "Like a…demon."
Jesse's eyes went wide, his pupils dilating as he grit his teeth. "You…"
"Jesse…" the girl interrupted, placing a hand on his shoulder. "May I do the talking, please?"
Jesse spun around angrily, like he was preparing to yell at her, only to stop as soon as he saw the stern, serious look she was giving him; a look that made him shrink in fear before skulking to the side. With the way clear, she stepped forward and bowed deeply before them.
"I'll do whatever I have to to convince you we mean you no harm. Take me prisoner, interrogate me, whatever."
Everyone looked at her in surprise.
"Hisako?" Leo asked.
"She's been genuine this entire time, so I think she's telling the truth. Airi, what do you think?"
Airi looked at the girl intently. "She's worried... and embarrassed and... remorseful."
"Right…" Leo sighed. "Let's talk about this inside. Seiko and Yukio can verify your story."

They entered the apartment, the girl and Jesse carrying the paralyzed Carter.
"Watch my head!" Carter repeated. "Watch my head!"
"We're watching, we're watching!" Lily snapped. "Hold yer horses!"
They carried him over to a couch.
"Okay, now we just gotta sit ya down, nice and slow…" Only to lose their grip and drop him face down on top of it.
"Dammit!" Jesse cursed.
"Face up! Face up!" Carter shouted.
Moving quickly, Carter's friends got to work flipping him over. The dreadhead gasped for air.
"Whew!" he let out in relief. "I thought I was gonna die."
"Easy, it's just a couch," Jesse said. "'Sides, it was their fault."
He pointed to Kumo and the rest of the clan. Midnight growled threateningly.
"Jesse!" the girl snapped softly, causing the boy to flinch.
"Don't worry, Carter, we'll get you fixed up," she assured. "You'll be doing Limbo again in no time."
"Yeah, as the pole." Carter chuckled a bit.
Jesse sighed, pulling out his stress ball and squeezing it. Airi watched him, clinging to Hisako the entire time as Seiko and Yukio entered, sitting down.
"Hello there," Seiko greeted civilly. "My name is Seiko Mishima. And you are?"
The cowgirl stepped forward, bowing. "A pleasure to meet you, Miss Mishima. My name is Lily Hino." She turned to her friends. "The one on the couch is Carter Robinson. And Mr. Ha…" She cleared her throat. "The one with glasses over there is Jesse MacNeil."
"Nice to meet y'all," Carter greeted happily.
"Yeah..." Jesse waved, less so.
"A pleasure to meet you all," Seiko greeted with a smile. "Though, forgive me if I come off as suspicious, what with you attacking our fellow clan members."
"To be fair, they attacked us first," Carter explained. "Little spider-kid jumped me right as I was about to knock and bit me."
"You were sneaking around all shadowy and suspicious and stuff!" Kumo defended.
"Kumo, wait your turn," Seiko scolded.
Lily sighed. "I know we got off to a bad start here, but I swear on my daddy's name and to the Lord God Almighty, I'm not your enemy."
"Oh brother…" Jesse muttered indignantly to himself, rolling his eyes.
"Another atheist, I take it?" Hisako asked.
Jesse paused. "Was it that obvious?"
"Are you kidding? I could hear that eyeroll."
"Anyway," Yukio began, ignoring the side conversations. "You said your father was Hamato Clan and moved to Texas. What was his name?"
"Ichiro Hino," Lily answered. "He had nothing but good things to say about you all."
"Ichiro…" Seiko muttered. "So that's what happened to him. I always wondered."
"So her dad really is a Hamato Clan ninja?" Vee asked.
"And one who didn't side with Shredder?" Raph added.
Seiko nodded. "Ichiro was the clan blacksmith. He had a heart condition that made it too difficult to go on recon or patrol. After Saki's attack and our subsequent exodus, Yukio offered him to join our faction of the clan; but he declined, wanting to start over."
"He went to a ranch out in Waco," Lily explained. "It's where he met my mom. He taught me everything I know, from how to fight to how to shoot."
Jade scoffed. "Since when does a ninja use a gun?"
"Since the invention of the silencer," Lily shot back. "Besides, I mostly use rubber bullets."
"I suppose that's better than your friend over there," Leo said, looking at Jesse.
Jesse scowled. "For the last time, I didn't do anything! Your crazy bug kid attacked us unprovoked and paralyzed Carter!"
"You made Airi cry!" Kumo hissed, showing his mandibles. "I was provoked!"
Jesse growled. "You…"
Airi retched, a hand over her mouth. Miko and Midnight were by her side in an instant.
"Please! All of you calm down!" She rubbed her temples. "There's only so much negativity I can take…"
Jesse calmed down, seeing Airi looking sick.
"Um... is she okay?" Lily asked in concern.
"A recently awakened empath," Hisako explained. "We only just managed to pull her from her fever."
"And you... "Airi pointed at Jesse. "You're this... bubbling volcano of rage. It's surrounding you, following you like a shadow. Not even Raph and Jade combined are that bad."
"Hey!" Raph and Jade yelled in unison.
"B-But I… She… You..." Jesse stammered for a bit before slowly going quiet.
"Anyway…" Lily continued. "My daddy's heart finally got the better of him last week. But before he died, he saw the news reports, heard the rumors of the Hamato Clan active in New York. His last request was that Carter and I come here to find you to finish our training, under Master Yoshi if possible."
"What about Jesse?" Donnie asked. "He an apprentice too?"
"Hardly," Jesse scoffed. "Lily's dad flat-out refused to teach me squat, even left it in his will. Said I didn't have the 'right mindset'."
"I wonder why," Raph let out sardonically.
Jesse let out an irritated grumble but otherwise ignored his quip. "As for why I'm here, let's just say my sister and I had a damn good reason to put as much distance between us and Texas as possible and leave it at that." He squeezed his ball some more.
"You mean the little girl that's been hiding in the bushes this entire time?" Hisako questioned.
There was a small squeak outside, confirming what she'd sensed. Jesse perked, looking aggravated, but also worried. Airi whimpered, feeling the volcano starting to bubble dangerously.
"How do you know about her?" he demanded.
Hisako tapped the side of her head. "Psychic powers."
"Psychic..." Jesse's eyes widened in realization, panic setting in. He looked at her fearfully, like she could destroy him with a thought.
"Relax, your mind is pretty airtight," she said, waving him down. "Whatever you're afraid of, I can't see it."
Jesse relaxed before going to the door, opening it, and turning to the bushes.
"They know, Jamie. You might as well come in."
He stepped out, then returned with a little girl about Airi's age in his arms. He set her down on a chair, making sure she was steady.
"There we go."
Kagome knelt before her, smiling. "Well, hi there. What's your name, sweetie?"
"I'm... Jamie…" the girl replied nervously.
"Hold up, is she...?" Raph pointed to her legs, which hung over the chair limply.
Jesse nodded. "Yeah, from the waist down."
"Her chair's still in the truck," Lily said. "It's not that easy to hide in the brush."
"You left a paralyzed little girl out there alone!?" Vee demanded.
"She was hidden away safely!" Jesse snapped. "We did that just in case something bad happened. Which turned out to be completely warranted, you–!"
"Jesse…" Jamie said quietly. "You promised you'd be nice."
Jesse winced, sagging and looking away guiltily.
"Ah, I see what's going on here," said Mikey. "She's the cub to his lone wolf."
"Okay, look," Leo cut in. "I called Dad. He and Kasumi will be over before too much longer to talk about Lily's request. Once that's done, we'll take Carter to a doctor. Make sure Kumo's venom won't have any adverse side effects."
"Do you guys have somewhere to stay?" Kagome asked.
"We rented out a motel room not long after we came here," Lily replied.
"If you can call it that..." Jesse grumbled.
Seiko smiled. "Well, fortunately for you, we have room to spare. The last thing we want is someone as young as Miss Jamie here sleeping in a motel, especially in New York."
"I'll get to work making this place more wheelchair-accessible," Donnie declared.

It wasn't much longer before Kasumi's car rolled up, and Splinter and Kasumi themselves entered. The two looked Lily over.
"So you're Ichiro's daughter?" Kasumi asked. "I can see the resemblance."
Lily nodded, then noticed Splinter, taking a step back in surprise. "Whoa, I knew this city was known for big rats, but this isn't what I expected."
"Lily, that's Splinter," Vee informed her. "Who you came here looking for."
Lily blinked in surprise. "Wait…you're Hamato Yoshi!?"
"Indeed I am." Splinter gave a bow.
Lily turned beet-red at that. "I am so sorry! It's just… I wasn't expecting…"
"None of us were," Tai told her. "He's surprisingly chill about it."
"Right." Lily nodded. "Well then…"
She knelt before Splinter, holding up her tanto.
"Master Yoshi, my daddy wished for me to complete my training under you and the rest of the Hamato Clan. I'd be honored if you took me under your wing, as would Carter."
Splinter chuckled at that, gently putting a paw on her head.
"So much like Ichiro. I would be happy to add you to our clan. However, with your training, I would recommend you join Seiko. The training I do is geared toward more… inhuman ninjas."
"Welcome to the clan," Seiko remarked. "We'll get you set up in the apartment."
"Thank you," Lily said with a smile. "But before that, could one of you take Carter to a doctor? Your... spider-boy bit him."
"It was Jesse's fault!" Kumo insisted.
"I will get a can of Raid and spray you, you miserable, little-!" Jesse stopped, feeling a tingle up his spine, followed by several disapproving stares boring into him. Realizing he'd crossed a line, he let out a sharp huff and stormed out.
"Sheesh!" Raph let out. "Forget a chip, this guy's shoulder's got a full-on crack!"
"I don't like him…" Airi whimpered, hugging onto Midnight who had come over to comfort her. "He's scary…"
"I'm sorry…" Lily said, trying to diffuse the situation. "Jesse's... had a rough life. But I swear, he's really not so bad once you get to know him."
Airi hummed, clearly not believing her.
"Though...that might take a while," Carter said as Kasumi helped him up. "He does not open up to people easily, 'specially if they tick him off."
Hisako turned to the door Jesse walked out of and focused her powers. She could make out a faint mumbling noise from the other side. Focusing more, the mumbling slowly grew louder and while she couldn't make out any words, she could hear the tone of the boy's thoughts.
"Yeah…" she said. "I can see that."
"Perhaps it would be best if Jesse went to the hospital with you," Seiko suggested. "Give Airi a moment to recuperate."
"Good idea," Leo concurred.
Later that night, Carter was resting in the back seat of Kasumi's car, her and Jesse sitting in the front. As they drove, Kasumi would take a few moments to get to know her guest.
"So, Jesse, was it?" she began.
"If you're expecting an apology, you're not getting it," the boy cut in curtly as he looked out the window. "That little bug-brat attacked us first and poisoned my friend."
"Actually, I simply want to talk."
"I don't."
"Jesse, dude, simmer down," Carter said. "These people are letting us stay with them, and you're not exactly leaving a good impression."
"Carter, I literally cursed them out and pulled a gun the moment they saw me. That train left the station a long time ago."
"Doesn't mean you can't start over again." Carter winced from the venom. "'Sides, you could use the connections for your casework."
"Carter…"
"Casework?" Kasumi asked, her interest piqued.
"Jesse's an aspiring detective," Carter explained. "He likes to follow crime reports on the news and try to solve the cases before the cops. He's actually pretty good. Even helped the cops back home solve a few cases…through the anonymous tip line of course."
"Interesting," Kasumi remarked. "I imagine Chief Vincent and her men would be happy to have someone like you on the force when you're older."
Jesse scoffed in discontent. "As if. Cops are scum." He narrowed his eyes as he glared at an officer on patrol. "Nothing but a bunch of donut-snorfing jackoffs who'll shoot or tase you if you so much as look at them wrong…or cuz they got nothing better to do."
Through the corner of her eye, Kasumi carefully watched Jesse's body language. The boy's breathing intensified, his eyes open wide as he squeezed the stress ball in his hand. Her attention then drifted to said ball, which was covered in small divots and tears, no doubt the result of its owner's constant squeezings.
"Y'know…" Carter began. "You really need to work on your anger issues."
"Aren't you supposed to be resting?" Jesse snapped.
Just then, the car stopped.
"We've arrived," Kasumi said, prompting Jesse to look ahead and find themselves outside Manhattan General.
"Ahh, so we have," he said, getting out.
Just then, Jesse felt a sudden chill up his spine, causing him to stop dead in his tracks.
"The fuck?" He looked around, trying to find whatever it was that set him off, but all he saw were the ordinary sights of a (relatively) ordinary city.
"Jesse?" Kasumi called out. "Jesse, is something wrong?"
Snapping back to reality, Jesse remembered why they were here. He could look into whatever this was later. Right now, Carter needed help.
"It's nothing," he replied, then went to get Carter from the back.
That night, Carter was resting in a hospital bed, looking much better with his shoulder wrapped up. Out of the blue, the door slowly slid open and a shadowy figure entered. It loomed over Carter with a wicked grin as darkness enveloped the room…
