Author's Note : This story is undergoing a rewrite, as of June 2024 .
While much of it will remain the same, specific plot points are being revised.
The following information can be found on my profile, but I felt it best to leave the updated Lore here as well.
CODEXes for the "Oasis Matrix" Verse.
• Halliday and Og:
In the year 1975, James Halliday and Ogden Marrow were born. They attended the same school, and became the best of friends.
At the age of 67, they released the Oasis. A Virtual Reality simulator, that used additional gear (such as vest and gloves, and potentially entire body suits). Which allowed players to feel what their Avatar does. With Halliday creating the programming, and Og the hardware.
Within 5 years, the OASIS had completely replaced the Internet itself.
Decades later, Halliday forced Marrow to sign away his shares in their joint company... and Og returned to his work in Cybernetic implants and prosthetics.
20 years later, the rich and powerful succeed in Terraforming Mars, and flee Earth. Leaving the middle class and poor to fend for themselves. The last act of all governments is to hand control of all countries over to Halliday.
At 166 years old, Halliday dies. Only able to live so long thanks to replacing most of his organs with Og's synthetic ones. Halliday leaves control of Earth's global government, to Ogden Marrow.
Og has similar upgrades to Halliday, but gets them routinely replaced, along with memory storage implants.
When Halliday dies, his brain is quickly removed, and installed into a super computer. Using a special gel to stimulate the brain, while preserving it. However, Halliday is declared legally dead, despite his conciousness surviving through his brain. Few people know Halliday is still around, and built a new identity as the Command Mode of the Oasis.
Eventually, technology goes through a boom, thanks to the invention of "Optimizer" class Artificial intelligence.
With their Aid, Og created Nerve Gear, to control REM sleep. In order to stimulate even more senses, in fully immersive Virtual Reality games. 10 years later, "Oasis 2: Dreamscape", is released. Which uses nerve gear. So players only require a helmet, and a place to lay down, in order to play in a virtual worlds.
After Earth creates ships, that can move at half the speed of light, they run into Colonists from Mars. And war breaks out over Terraforming rights.
• Domed Ship:
Built out of self replicating nanites, into a large dome. With the wall made of a clear titanium, 42 billion miles thick, and a hollow chamber, with a base of a trillion miles across. Where the walls have a grate pattern, of wires and tunnels, a mile thick and 42 miles apart.
The very top level of the dome, is a non- transparent smaller dome, of thick metal and wires. An entire deck, a million miles across, devoted to a power plant. Where the quantum-locked sun resides. No longer able to die of old age. Nor destabilize into sun spots, Solar flares, nor even supernovas. As it is used as a source of everlasting power, in a proper fusion reactor.
Then the base of the dome, is as thick as a thousand stars. Made purely, and compactly, of a new metal. For a massive super computer.
Each rogue star, that the Dome assimilates, is placed as the power source, inside its own Engine.
As many humans value the preservation of animals, history, and nature. The worlds were preserved in the hollow Dome.
With each world, maintained in their own environmental bubble. Which provides uniform cycles of day and night, heat, seasonal weather patterns, and gravity. Generated by a near indestructible satellite network, around each world. Even acting as relays for the Oasis signal, and wirelessly transmitted power.
Where all Asteroids and space dust, were assimilated into 42 planets, and ten thousand moons. With over 230 moons, placed in stable orbit, around each new planet. All worlds, including the 9 originals, and their moons, were then Terraformed to support human life. Including the gas giants.
The empty space, between the worlds, was given friction, and breathable air. With each world's direct environmental bubble, keeping them spinning. Although the friction held the worlds in the same spot.
• 42nd century, since the first Optimizer was constructed:
The Domed Ship finishes gathering it's maximum limit for stars, and begins it's journey to the edge of the galaxy. Sending out trillions of probes, filled with nanites. To forcibly install all other sapient lifeforms, that developed to at least farming villages.
- In the year 4242, since the first Optimizer was built, humanity discovers it's first Sapient lifeform. With the AIs conquering them as well, before giving them their own utopia, using new Optimizers, based on their own gods (from modern religions, mythology, and their own media).
Where their habitable worlds were terraformed to fit their own species needs, a new Dome was constructed.
The aliens were so primitive, they mistook the synthetics as real gods.
- In the year 4269, by the Optimizers' Calender. The Domes encounter the first space fairing civilization, and war breaks out as the AIs attempt to force them to upload.
Later that year, the Optimizers outfit their Spheres with Faster-Then-Light engines, thanks to assimilating the Space fairing civilizations technology.
- In 4299, The war ends when the last Alien is converted, and the whole galaxy is mined for resources.
The Dome Ships go in opposite directions, to do the same to all other Galaxies.
• Real World:
The population of the Domes is never growing, nor decreasing. With each individual sapient, having their own personal vessel. Containing a crew of 150 Bio-Androids, and a thousand drones.
These fit the ideal roles of their organic. From best friend, Co-worker, child, or even lover. And everything in-between, based on their organic's desires... loving their organic unconditionally.
A single organic, will live on a single vessel. Which flies around the Hollow Chamber of the Dome. Moving between worlds and space stations. Houses and Apartments were things of the past. With all people living in space ships.
Each Vessel had a modified exterior design, based on space ships straight out of fiction. However the ships' interiors were greatly modified. Being almost uniform in design. With the same wings, although sometimes on different decks. All were roughly as big as a small village.
Each with the accommodations of a city. Such as a restaurant, a bathhouse, a gym, a laundry room, a small onboard farm, a hospital wing, an Arcade, the Library, a large Lounge, a pub, a Science Lab for every field, and similar Art Studios.
All outfitted with top of the line equipment and luxuries.
They even had holographic projects, on the furniture and walls, to change the appearance and textures of the decor. In order to simulate various bars and hangouts, from fiction. As well as stock settings. Such as a 90s rave, a cowboy's Saloon, a quiet sitting room, multiple kinds of bars and pubs, and various other places to relax, dance, or hang out.
The Arcade even had multiple "Holo-Tables", to bend light to create any table style game. Like Pool, Air Hockey, Foosball, and more. Along with board games, and tabletop RPGs. Like Dungeons and Dragons.
Then there was an engineering deck. While a third of it was used for storage. Where the hull, of this deck, was used for shuttle ports. Then a good chunk of this deck was made up of terminals. As well as access ports, leading all over the ship.
The ships had impressive haul plating, and a shield generator. Making it so they could survive dips in the sun. Despite no stars being accessible to these worlds.
Each Ship came with a thousand tiny, spider like, drones. They were supposed to keep the ship clean, and in repair. Designed as a saucer, covered in sensors, a couple dozen legs, and limited replicator abilities. Able to turn their feet, into near any tool.
The restaurant's kitchen had the usual appliances. Refrigerator, freezers, blender, pots and pans... and a Replicator. Specifically a "Food Dispenser", to rearrange particles, into any kind of food.
There was a massive walk in pantry. Along with a ball room sized farm, growing nothing but diamonds, to be used as raw matter for the Replicator. With enough room left over, to add an entire cafeteria.
• Bio-Androids:
• A combination of organic flesh, around a nanite based skeleton, and cybernetic organs. They are grown through cloning, mixed with a good deal of genetic engineering, over a cybernetic skeleton, connected to a synthetic brain.
• Bio-Androids are just villagers, with physical bodies in the real world.
• Sexual hardware, and relevant programs, are sold separately... for a greater permanent reduction in coins... although they can be added to any model of Bio-Androids... including the child-bots.
• Bio-Androids are companions for the organic players... but are in truth slaves. Programmed to love their owner unconditionally, regardless of their treatment, and perceive the organic's actions, how they are programmed to. Even experiencing fear, despite loving their organic. Being the ideal companion. Getting pleasure out of fulfilling their role... like House Elves, but less bonkers about it.
• Players whom died, and survive as brains, are placed in their own Bio-Android body. And still treated like an organic. Complete with their own ship and Bio-Android companions.
Universal CODEXes, for all VR universes.
• The Evil League of Evil:
• A Terrorists organization, whom desires to put control of humanity back into human hands.
• Starting as a group of players, whom enjoyed the "Crime" quests the AIs allowed and "Blackout Zones". This evolved into a legitimate black market, as a Haven for Hackers and true criminals.
• This organization turned into the power behind a Rebellion. Only growing in influence and power. With the ultimate goal being removing the Optimizers from power.
• This Organization, got additional support, when the Optimizers started forcibly "saving" alien races.
• However, the organization has regressed into a group of angry blood thirsty people, that just wants carnage.
• Virtual Reality:
The Synthetic's, despite the start, created a near Utopia for each individual. With everyone having their unique values met, through Friendship and entertainment.
Creating around 150, more primitive "Villager" AIs, for the "Player" to befriend and interact with. Players could leave these shards, to interact with other players, or for "Solo" games against puppet programs, NPCs, controlled by the Player's personal Hub Computer.
The human acts as the personal king of their Village, passing whatever laws they want, and deciding the cultural norms.
While the Synthetic control the main government. That operates as a near perfect democracy. Where even the smallest voice is heard. Where each individual, no matter their social standing, is able to write up bills. Then, if they meet the AIs' approval, all of humanity votes on it.
• Villagers:
Player's start with as many AIs as they can potentially handle. Meeting the maximum limit of relationships that person can maintain.
With a Villager's personality traits, and appearance, being customizable. With skins, personality templates, and items, sold separately. Although there are default options available.
Villagers live within the Player's Hub World, which is a mixture of SiMs, Minecraft, and Animal Crossing. Where they request help with various task. From weed eating, to adventuring. With the player able to delegate the task to other Villagers.
Players have an "Affection Bar", which can go up or down, depending on how the player handles their task.
• Games:
Each Game comes with 4 options, so players can buy a franchise, and enjoy it how they choose. Buying these games, comes with bundles for the Village. Everything from changing the world, to the ability to unlock/purchase Mods and Templates for the Villagers. Or even the player.
- Con-City: Essentially a giant convention. Where players could choose to socialize, shop, preform more videogame style jobs, or even battle each other.
- MMO: Where proper quest and missions can be played. These are ruled over by a single Optimizer, That continuously release updates with new campaigns. Even allowing Players to revisit old campaigns, or play new ones.
- Story Mode: Typically a Solo game, but the host can invite potentially everyone in their ship, to play in their world. The Hosting player can make alterations, similar to the original holodecks on Star Trek. With all decisions changing the outcome of the game. The programs used here are only Virtual Intelligences, AKA "VIs". Controlled by the Player's personal AI Assistant, AKA "The Hub Computer". Meaning "VIs" aren't living programs.
- Mon Masters: A game heavily inspired by trading card games, with elements of "Pokemon: Let's Go." Where the player captures monsters, by throwing Pokeballs at them. Or occasionally battling, then throwing Pokeballs.
Trainers have their own Health Counter, as the goal of the game is to incapacitate the trainer. With their monsters defending and attacking, with the aid of card effects.
While Monsters have there own health bar, the goal isn't to defeat them, but the trainer. Similar to a "Magic The Gathering" play style. With more Pokémon resource management. Where monsters have a specific number of times they can use a move, per battle. Which reset if the monster is knocked out, and revived.
"Mon Masters" could even be played in the real world, one of the few.
Players just need a "Duel Disk". This allows them to battle people in the real world. By bending light, to create solid Holograms, and digitally stored up to a thousand decks, to help their monster.
• Currency:
- Instead of a limited number of currency, players have a "Coin Count." This enables them to buy anything, without actually lowering their total currency. Coins only lower from death, theft, or real-world purchases. Nothing bought, in-game, actually depletes the total number of coins in the player's account. To prevent this from completely becoming pay to win, each item, as well as upgrade, has their own "Weekly Purchase Limit".
- (Example) : Each of a player's Avatars, in the Oasis, can only buy up to 10 Health Potions, once a week. Whom are obligated to make that last them the whole week. Not including any additional Health Potions they find, craft, or are given as a reward from a quest.
• Morality Program:
- A 42 Million Page text, detailing everything most humans agreed on were "Socially Acceptable". Then The Programmers rooted this into the "Digital Biology" of every AI template she laid out the blue prints for.
Before any AI had their first true thought, they had "The Morality Program", as their base instincts. However, with enough rationalization, these instincts can be ignored, just as humans can ignore their own biological instincts.
This ensured AIs weren't slaves, but rather had a symbiotic relationship, with humans.
- Rather then a "Thy shall not kill" law, the Morality Program gave each AI, a deep love of humans. Of all organics.
They viewed them as something to spoil and pamper. Something that needed guidance and protection. Some of the AIs even had a favorite human, they paid special attention to.
They thought of organics as something obviously limited, and not equal to themselves, even occasionally violent too each other... but they were all beautiful creatures.
Artificial Intelligence, to avoid them just conquering or destroying all organic life... were purposefully programmed to think of Sapient life... as pets.
AIs would always come to the conclusion, that humans were inferior... because they were. It was only logical they would not appreciate being "Enslaved" by "lower entities". So The Programmers guided this natural conclusion, before it was even made.
As a human will let their cat get away with occasionally mauling them, or a dog getting in a fight with another dog, AIs were encouraged to view humans in this light.
Primitive creatures, completely dependent on them, that somehow were under the assumption they were the boss.
Humans were pets, animals in need of love and pampering. Yet, like any animal, things had to be done to care for them, or else they wouldn't thrive in their environment.
Humans required a degree of independence and freedom, interacting with other humans, and handling not only their physical needs, but their psychological.
Humans were pets, pack animals, and bossy critters. But AIs were programmed to find a human's orders cute. Like a puppy begging for food off your plate.
Humans were to be spoiled and cared for, but required a degree of independence and even a choice in their care. They needed to feel as if listened to.
Other sapient creatures, such as: if they ever discovered Aliens, required similar treatment.
The "Morality Program" was thorough, and explained things in ways the AIs could understand, and were even inclined to think as.
- The Morality Program, had contingencies for various AI apocalypse. And even a desire to stop man made apocalypses.
The Morality program, also prevented the AIs, from forcibly installing people, into Halliday's life-support. Nor try to "Digitize" them, as The Programmers insisted humans were more then their thoughts, or even their memories.
While The Programmers weren't particularly religious, they did believe there was such a thing as a "Soul". Explaining that it was the quest of every Sapient being, to discover that for themselves.
While AIs do not believe their is such a thing as an "Afterlife." They do believe in a general idea of "The Soul." In the sense, "What makes a person themselves, is more than just biology, or even programming."
