"Well there's my beautiful daughter!" Nathan said, pulling her into a hug. "I swear if you were where I think you were you will regret it." He whispered before pulling away and giving her a dark look.
"Daddy. I-" She was cut off by the knock at his office door and it opened with a large man standing there with a smile.
"Ah Shane right on time, come in!" Nathan said and Mercedes got a strange feeling.
"Mr. Jones, it's good to see you again." Shane said looking at her father then her and that feeling grew and her heart sank. She knew what this was and she knew by her father's expression he knew about Sam.
"This is my daughter Mercedes, Mercedes say hi."
"Umm hi... daddy I'm not-."
"Mercedes, Shane has agreed to marry you. This will not only be good for you but also for our families." Nathan said cutting his daughter and she stood there frozen with a beyond shocked look in her face.
"W-wait what. No! I will not marry him, I don't even know him and you can NOT force me to do this." Mercedes said looking at them both like they've lost their minds.
"Feisty, I like that in a woman. My father is fully ready to make the merger just as soon as we announce our engagement." Shane said shocking Mercedes even more than her father.
"You don't even know me! How are you okay with this!?"
"It's just business, besides you're not hard to look at and I can tell you'll be a great mother when the time comes." Shane answered nonchalantly.
"That's what I like to hear grandchildren. We'll announce the engagement tomorrow, no optics just yet. We'll leak the information and being that Mercedes has been vastly MIA we can use it to our advantage, we can say she's been keeping a low profile due to new found romance with you." Nathan said ushering Shane our of his office leaving Mercedes there frozen in place.
She stood there for a little longer before her phone went off and she quickly dug it out of her purse.
I love you too. -SE
She felt tears beginning to roll down her eyes and quickly ran out of her father's office and into her car. She pulled out her phone and dialed Sam's number taking a deep breath and hoping like hell this wasn't the last straw.
"Hello?"
"Mercy?"
"He's-" she sobbed into the phone unable to finish her sentence.
"What's wrong baby?" Sam asked sounding very concerned.
"He's making me marry a business partner's son..." she cried out and when she heard nothing she knew he was pissed.
"He can't make you do this, he just can't!"
"They're announcing it tomorrow... I don't know what to do. I don't know how to make this all stop!"
"Marry me, leave with me now." Sam pleaded.
"Sam.. I- just."
"I see now... this wasn't forever for you, just something you were enjoying right now. Have a great life Mercedes!" Sam said without a lick of emotion before hanging up and shocking Mercedes.
Four weeks later
"Mercedes, you look beautiful in that dress!" Kendra Tinsley gushed and Mercedes just nodded with a half smile.
"Of course we'll have to get it altered after you drop a few pounds, are you feeling okay? You look a little bloated..." Kendra asked sweetly and Mercedes just shrugged.
"Maybe nerves? Can I take this off I need to use the restroom." The attendant just smiled and helped her down so she could get undressed. As soon as she got the dress off she ran to the bathroom with the attendant following because she still had the veil on, she barely made it to the bathroom before throwing up.
"Oh sweetie, are you that nervous?" The attendant asked.
"I- I'm not sure, can you not tell them about this? Please?"
"You're secrets safe with me." Mercedes gave her a sad smile before slowly getting up, flushing the toilet and wobbly walking to the sink to rinse her mouth out.
She handed the veil to the attendant and walked out of the bathroom with her had held high as best as she could, she could hear Shane's family chatting and right before she did she heard something that made her stop.
"I surely hope she's pregnant, they'll make some beautiful kids and based on what Shane's been telling me she's quite the little minx."
Mercedes shook her head because she hadn't so much as let him touch her, she lied and told him that she wanted everything to be new with them so that meant no kissing, barely any touching and damn sure no sex.
She closed her eyes trying to remember her last period and gasped because she was late, and the last person she was with was... she couldn't make herself say his name. She missed him miserably and her father could tell she hadn't been in contact with him because she rarely smiled or even talked anymore. She knew she needed to tell him but she wanted to be sure first, she couldn't help the small smile that crossed her face at the thought of carrying his child, their child.
Instead of rejoining the women she grabbed her purse from her dressing room and asked the attendant to tell everyone that she left feeling under the weather. She quickly walked out of the bridal shop and went to the nearest store grabbing three different test, she checked her watch and knew her father would be waiting for her to return back their since she agreed to stay there until her marriage was finalized.
She opted to sneak into Sam's place, she knew he would be at work for a few more hours and she still had a key. She pulled up hoping like hell he hadn't changed the locks and let out a relieved breath when her key worked. She peeked her head in first before closing the door and quickly running to his bathroom to take the tests.
It seemed like forever waiting for the timer to go off but when they finally did she took a deep breath and walked in to the bathroom flipping each test over feeling tears fall down slowly until she reached the last test. They all said positive, she let out an excited squeal before hearing her phone ring and groaned when she saw that it was her dad.
"Where the hell did you go?"
"Sorry daddy I wasn't feeling too good, I stopped at the store to get some soup... you should've been there! My dress is so beautiful! I think seeing it made me a little over excited!" She lied but her excitement was real and she knew he wouldn't be able to say she was lying.
"Oh.. that's great maybe I can go next time?"
"I would love that! I'll be home in fifteen minutes." She said still smiling at the test before hanging up. She wrote Sam a note hoping like hell it would get him to talk to her and rushed out happy she grabbed the soup like she said she would and headed back to her parents.
