Chapter 2: Yuji's First Brawl! A Destined Meeting!?
Yuji didn't know what he expected when the world around him started to slow down to a still stop. The wind that was sweeping through the park froze as a blinding white light overcame his senses.
When Yuji reopened his eyes, he found himself and the others were no longer in the town's park. The world he once knew was now replaced with an almost blank void. The ground beneath his feet was almost brightening white and the sky was a mishmash of colors. Almost as if a painter had splashed paint all over the sky. "W-where are we?"
"Man, you really don't know anything about Bakugan, huh?" Dan chuckled. Finding amusement in Yuji's awestruck face.
"...I did say that I never played before," Yuji replied nervously.
Dan waved reassuringly. "It's cool, dude. You remind me of my friend Alice, she was just like you when she first saw this place."
Serena gazed around the void; it was also her first time seeing this dimension. Without a gate card of her own she had never been able to enter it. "Wait, don't we usually need our own Gate Card to enter this place?"
Dan turned around, looking down at her. "Nah, you can enter this place just fine as long as you're close to the ones with a Gate Card. Surprised you guys didn't know that."
"My friends weren't the smartest of people it seems," Serena grumbled.
Yuji spoke up again. "Anyway, could you explain this world to us?"
"Sure!" Dan perked up, seemingly enjoying this teacher role. "This is an alternate dimension separate from our own. While we're here, time back in our world is completely frozen. Here is where we'll be doing all of our brawling!" Dan exclaimed.
"This is where brawling takes place…" Yuji repeated. His blue orbs scanned the alternate dimension with a new sense of wonder. "Maybe this brawling thing won't be so bad? Especially with Dan here to guide me!" Yuji thought.
"Kinda plain, isn't it?" Serena brings up.
"Yeah, but the battles make up for it!" Dan replied.
"HEY!"
"Hm?" The three turned their attention to the two brothers who were standing on the other side of the void, looking impatient. "You want something, Shuji?" Dan asked.
"What!? Of course, I do, Dan! We're here to battle! Not a stupid tutorial!" Shuji shouted.
"Eh? But you're like the number one pick for tutorial missions," Dan said as if that was common knowledge.
"WHAT!?" Shuji's anger increased tenfold. "Just for that, I'm gonna crush this newbie here with everything that I got!" Shuji whipped out a Gate Card.
"Yeah, Shuji's gonna beat you black and blue!" Akira chimed in.
Serena stepped forward, taking the challenge. "Oh yeah!? Well, Yuji is gonna crush your brother like a grape!"
"Serena!" Yuji screamed, blushing.
"I'd like to see him try, kid!" Akira shot back.
"You're the kid here, brat!" Serena yelled.
"Alright, alright," Dan pulled the girl back gently. "Jeez, you remind me of Runo," He thought back to the Twin Tailed Haos user. Dan reached into his side holder and dispensed three Bakugan.
"Here ya go, Yuji," Dan handed the Pyrus Bakugan to the teen.
"O-Oh…yeah. Right…" Yuji awkwardly held the Bakugan in his hands. The boy was a bit overwhelmed at the moment. The Bakugan in his hands felt a bit off, even a bit too warm for his liking. "What else do I need?"
"Some Gate Cards and Ability Cards," Dan handed six cards to Yuji.
"Gate Cards and Ability Cards?" Yuji examined the two sets of three cards in his hands. He could see the attribute symbols on the Gate Cards and their effects, whereas the Ability Cards only listed their effects.
"Yup, I'll explain the Ability Cards once the battle begins. Right now, you and Shuji both need to toss down a Gate Card," Dan explained.
"So, I just throw it?" Yuji raised an eyebrow.
"Yup."
"Alright, then. Let's do this!" Yuji prepared himself. Though, the bravado was just for him to shake his own confidence.
"GATE CARD, SET!" Both teens tossed down their cards. Both cards enlarged to gigantic sizes as they landed on the battlefield.
"Woah! They got so huge!" Serena gaped.
Shuji huffed. "Since I'm such a nice guy, I'll let you go first."
"Right," Yuji looked at the three Bakugan at his disposal. He didn't really know which one to start with. "How do I pick which one to go with?" Yuji asked.
Dan shrugged his shoulders. "It's all about intuition and guts. Pick the one with the best G-power and throw it onto a Gate Card." Dan pointed at one of the Bakugan in Yuji's hand. "This one is a Juggernoid. He has a total of 170 Gs'. Not a bad one to start with," Dan suggested.
"Then, let's see what he can do!" Yuji pulled his arm back, lifting up his leg to give himself more throwing power. "Time to put all that throwing practice with Dad to use!"
"Bakugan, brawl!" Yuji shouted, tossing his Bakugan with everything he had. The ball soared through the air before rolling onto his Gate Card. "Bakugan, stand!"
Juggernoid came to life with a mighty roar, the Pyrus tortoise stomped its feet loudly. Yuji was baffled by how large the Bakugan actually was. "It's as big as a building!" Who knew such little creatures could grow so much?
Serena jumped up and down with excitement. "Hi, Juggernoid! You look so cute!" Serena gushed, happily.
From the other end of the battlefield, Shuji and Akira gagged. "Let me show you how it's done, kid! Bakugan, brawl!" Shuji's Bakugan flew directly towards Yuji's Gate Card. "Bakugan, stand!" A Subterra version of Juggernoid joined the Pyrus version on the Gate Card.
Subterra Juggernoid: 170 G
Pyrus Juggernoid: 170 G
Dan looked down at his Baku-watch as the AI spoke out the power levels. "Really, Shuji? You just had to copy us, huh?"
"Hey! I didn't copy anyone! I allowed you to go first, idiot!" Shuji cried.
Dan shook his head, loving just how easy it was to rile up Shuji. Turning to his new student Dan showed Yuji the watch's screen. "A battle begins when two Bakugan land on the same card. Win the battle to win a Gate Card!"
Yuji nodded his head. "Sounds easy enough."
"Hehehe! We'll see about that!" Shuji lifted up a card in his hands. "Ability Card, activate!" The card in his hand released a bright glow as it powered up his Juggernoid.
Subterra Juggernoid: 170 G increased to 320 G!
"What!?" Yuji cried as Shuji's Bakugan grew stronger.
"You're gonna get pounded, kid!" Shuji grinned, menacingly.
"Yuji, open the Gate Card," Dan said.
"How do I do that!?"
"Just tell it to open," Dan answered.
"Uh, Gate Card open!" Yuji yelled.
The Gate Card glowed brightly, revealing itself to be a Character Card for Juggernoid.
Pyrus Juggernoid: 170 G to 370 G!
Subterra Juggernoid: 320 G to 370 G!
"What!? He evened it out!?" Shuji cried.
It didn't take a genius to figure out that the battle would end in a draw unless something happened. Yuji turned to the Ability Cards in his hand. "Maybe…this one?" Yuji raised the card into the air. "Ability Card, activate!"
Pyrus Juggernoid: 370 G to 420 G!
"Gah! That's way too strong now!" Shuji yelled, shocked.
"Yeah! Go, Yuji!" Serena cheered.
The Pyrus Juggernoid stomped forward, powered up by the card's effect. It jumped with everything it had, headbutting the opposing Juggernoid with earth shattering force. The Subterra Juggernoid flew back from the destructive hit, turning back into ball form. It rolled across the ground by Shuji's feet.
Yuji's Juggernoid and Gate Card flew back into his hand. The boy stood there shocked by the outcome of his first Bakugan battle. Clutching both Bakugan and card in his hands, Yuji jumped into the air. "Yes, I won!"
Serena collided with his back, wrapping her arms around him. "Good job kicking that loser's butt, Yuji!"
Dan congratulated the teen. "Good job winning your first Gate Card. The first one to win three will win the whole battle. So, let's continue kicking Shuji's butt!"
Yuji felt his heart soar from Dan's praise, shocked that someone as popular as him just praised him. "Y-yeah! I'll do my best, Dan!"
Shuji and Akira both were fuming in anger. "You just got lucky! You won't be as lucky in the next battle!"
Riding off of the new sense of adrenaline and confidence, Yuji met Shuji's gaze. "Yeah, we'll see about that!"
"Tch! Keep that mouth of yours talking! I'm about to shut you up! Bakugan, brawl!" Shuji sent out his next Bakugan. "Bakugan, stand!"
A Subterra Saurus roared as it came to life. It was a large beast that resembled a rhino, however it stood on two legs instead of four.
Subterra Saurus: 180 G!
Yuji was a little intimidated by it, but he managed to win one battle. So, he couldn't start backing down now! "Bakugan, brawl!"
"Bakugan, stand!" Yuji's own Pyrus Saurus matched Shuji's.
Pyrus Saurus: 180 G!
"Heh, look who's the copycat now?" Shuji taunted.
Yuji growled at the larger teen. "Talk trash after you've won a Gate Card!"
"Why you little….! Gate Card Open!" Shuji shouted in frustration.
Subterra Saurus: 180 G to 270 G!
Pyrus Saurus: 180 G to 290 G!
"What!? Why did his G-Power grow higher than mine!?" Shuji cried.
Dan rolled his eyes. "Are you sure you're not the one who needs tutoring, Shuji?"
"S-Shut up, Dan! I just made a mistake!" Shuji yelled, blushing.
"HAHAHAHA! Where's all of your bravado now?" Serena mocked.
Akira growled at Serena's mocking. "Big bro, teach them a lesson!"
Shuji brought out another Ability Card. "Yeah! Ability, activate! Ground!"
Pyrus Saurus: 290 G to 240 G!
Pyrus Saurus felt the ground beneath it rumble as sand began to materialize underneath it. The creature roared in pain as it felt its power decrease.
"What's happening!?" Yuji asked, shocked.
Dan clicked his tongue. "Shuji's ability card just happened. It decreases the higher attribute G-Power that is higher than 50 to 50. Meaning that instead of a 110 G-Power boost, instead it became a 50 power boost," Dan explained.
"Meaning that Yuji's Saurus is now weaker!" Serena cried out.
Shuji laughed at his ensured victory. "Ya see that, kid. You don't stand a chance, I was just messing around in that first round! I doubt Dan gave you anything to counter this!"
"Of course I did, slow-poke. The question now is whether or not Yuji realizes he can use it," Dan stared at Yuji's back.
The newbie brawler stared down at the cards in his hand. If he didn't think of something quickly, his Saurus was gonna take a dip in a sandy bath! As he finished quickly reading the cards' effects he realized something. "Wait…yeah, this one will work!" Yuji raised the card into the air. "Ability Card, activate! G-Power Swap!"
Subterra Saurus: 270 G to 240 G!
Pyrus Saurus: 240 G to 270 G!
"WHAT!?" Shuji and Akira screamed.
Dan laughed, finding their faces hysterical. "Are you really surprised, Shuji? Of course I'd prepare my new student to take you down!"
"Alright, Saurus! Take him down!" Yuji ordered, pumping his fist.
As if responding to his call Pyrus Saurus sprinted right out of the sand trap it had been placed in. Raising its fist, the Pyrus Bakugan landed a devastating right hook into the Subterra's face. The enemy Bakugan went flying off of the Gate Card before turning back to ball form, rolling down next to Shuji's feet.
Yuji caught his Saurus, grinning madly from the rush of winning his 2nd battle. "You can't beat me!"
Serena wiggled two fingers, raising her arm high into the air. "That's two wins to your zero! Who's the loser now!?"
Akira stomped his feet in protest, upset at seeing Serena acting so smug. "You're not even the one battling, so shut up!"
"Hm? Is that a loser talking? Not sure if I can hear you from the bottom of the barrel!"
"AGH!" Akira screamed.
Ignoring the two kids who were preoccupied with insulting one another, Yuji turned around to look at Dan. "I'm only two wins in and there are no Gate Cards down. Do we just set new ones?"
Dan nodded his head. "Yup, just throw down another Gate Card."
Yuji pulled out another Gate Card at the same time as Shuji. "GATE CARD, SET!"
"Bakugan, brawl!" Yuji sent his Saurus back out into battle. Landing on his own Gate Card instead of Shuji's. "Bakugan, stand!"
Pyrus Saurus: 180 G!
"As if I'm gonna lose to some stupid newbie like you! I'll beat you with this one Bakugan!" Shuji declared. "Bakugan, brawl! Bakugan, stand!" The brown ball rolled right in front of Saurus.
The creature that appeared was a Subterra Serpenoid, a large brown snake Bakugan.
Subterra Serpenoid: 150 G!
"Gate Card open!" Yuji shouted, revealing the card.
Pyrus Saurus: 180 G to 320 G!
Subterra Serpenoid: 150 G to 200 G!
Shuji scoffed, not letting the large difference scare him. "As if I'll let that stop me! Ability-"
"Nuh uh, Shuji!" Dan cut him off.
"What are you doing, Dan!?" Shuji yelled.
"Showing you how big of an idiot you are for walking into this trap," Dan smirked.
"Trap?" Both brothers tilted their heads.
"You want to explain it to them?" Dan asked Yuji.
The newbie teen nodded his head. "This Gate Card is called Stand Off, meaning that nobody is allowed to use Ability Cards for the rest of this battle!"
All of the color drained from the brothers' faces. "B-b-b-but then that means…"
"YOU LOSE!" Serena taunted, pointing her thumb downwards.
"End it, Saurus!" Yuji commanded.
"RAAAAAHHHH!" The beast roared. Pulling back its large fist and shooting it forward like a missile. The Serpenoid was unable to protect itself from the incoming attack, its head was blown backwards from the game ending blow.
Yuji blinked slowly, feeling wind once again blowing past him. Looking around the teen found himself and the others standing inside of the park once more. "W-we're back? Then that means…I won…" The feeling of success started to set in. "I won…I WON! I won my first Bakugan Battle!" Yuji cheered.
Shuji growled, his face deep red with embarrassment and humiliation. "T-This isn't finished, kid! I'll get you back for this in the tournament! And prove to everyone that I'm the best brawler!" Shuji declared before running away with his tail between his legs.
"S-Shuji, wait up!" Akira chased after his brother. Though, not without giving one last glare to the trio, or more specifically to Serena.
"Yeah! And keep running!" Serena yelled.
Dan walked over to Yuji, lightly punching his shoulder. "Nice job! For a first-time battler, you weren't half bad! How do you feel about Bakugan now?"
"How do I feel…?" Yuji repeated. If he had been asked this question half an hour ago, he would have just scoffed and given a half assed answer. However, after finally trying it out for the first time and even winning the brawl, his entire outlook had changed. "I-I love it! It was so exhilarating…! So, freaking awesome! I didn't know Bakugan could be this much fun!"
Serena lightly smacked his arm. "I've been telling you this for months! Don't knock the game till you try it!"
Yuji looked down at his sister, chuckling. "Yeah, sorry for not listening to you."
"Apology accepted!" Serena smiled brightly.
"Though, I'm confused. Shuji mentioned a tournament. What's that about?" Yuji asked Dan.
"It's a tournament that was recently started up in the city by a mysterious donor. Apparently, it's made up of 6 different tournaments. By participating in each tournament and winning battles, your rank will increase. And only the Top 10 ranked players are allowed to enter the final tournament," Dan explained.
"That sounds so awesome!" Serena exclaimed.
"I know, right!?" Dan was equally as pumped.
Yuji nodded his head, the adrenaline in his system was still pumping his body. The idea of a tournament for brawling sounded like so much fun. "Though, I don't really have any Bakugan or cards. Nor do I have a Bakugan as strong as Drago," Yuji said.
After hearing his name mentioned Dan's partner hopped out of his pocket. "Hm? It is not just me who is strong. The bond between Dan and I is what makes us powerful," Drago explained.
"Woah! Drago's giving us wisdom words!" Serena grinned.
"Wisdom words?" Dan and Drago sweat dropped. "Though, I do agree with Drago. A brawler's bond with their Bakugan is the most important part of brawling. How about you head on over to the Bakugan Store to build up your deck. My friend Alice runs the place, she'll be happy to help you," Dan explained.
"Bakugan store?" The siblings repeated.
"Yup! The Bakugan you pick are the ones you'll be battling with! The more you battle the more your bonds with them will increase!" Dan exclaimed.
Yuji soaked in all of Dan's wisdom. "R-right! Thanks for everything, Dan!"
The Pyrus Brawler soaked in all of the praise. He was enjoying being a teacher way more than he should. The teen couldn't wait to rub it in Runo's face that he was a good teacher. "No problem, Yuji. I gotta get going, but good luck!" Dan hurried out of the park.
Serena couldn't contain the excitement in her body. "Isn't this exciting, Yuji!? A Bakugan tournament! This town really is awesome!"
"Yeah, I guess mom was right. Seems today was a good day to go exploring," Yuji said.
"C'mon, let's go…to…the…stor…"
"Uh…Serena?" Yuji grew nervous as Serena's body came to a freezing stop.
"Serena?"
She didn't respond.
"Serena!?" Yuji tried to shake her body, but the girl wouldn't move. Gazing around the park it seemed that everything else around him had frozen in place. "What's happening!? D-did a Gate Card open or something!?"
Unknown to Yuji a black hole opened up in the sky above him. Something small, covered in blinding light shot out of the hole. Landing directly in front of the teenager. "WAH!?"
Yuji uncovered his eyes when the light had disappeared. "What was that?" Looking down Yuji found a white and gold Bakugan lying down at his feet. "A Bakugan? What's a Bakugan doing here?"
It opened up.
"EEEK!" Yuji squealed loudly in fright.
The Bakugan stared at him as if it didn't expect a male to produce a noise that high.
Yuji calmed down, a feeling of embarrassment washing over him. "Thankfully nobody heard that…"
"I did."
"Well, yeah, except you-WAIT YOU CAN TALK!?" Yuji screamed again. The only other talking Bakugan he had met was Drago, but that was common knowledge amongst the internet.
The Bakugan didn't answer, instead choosing to gaze around its now environment. "Where am I?"
"Uh? Planet Earth," Yuji answered as if it was obvious.
"Not in Vestroia, then?" The Bakugan asked.
Yuji was utterly lost in the situation. "Who are you?"
"My name is Leonidas," He answered.
"Leonidas…" Yuji repeated the name. A weird feeling in his chest started to appear after saying the Bakugan's name. At that moment an idea popped into his head. "Maybe, this could work for me. Hey, do you want to battle with me?"
"Battle?"
"Yeah, battle other people and their Bakugans! I bet we'll totally win!" Yuji clarified.
Leonidas felt a burning in his body at the mention of other Bakugan. "Will battling with you give me the opportunity to defeat other Bakugan?"
"Yeah! We'll be the strongest!" Yuji declared.
"Hm…to unleash my power against other Bakugan…I accept your offer. What is your name?" Leonidas asked.
Yuji couldn't stop the wide smile from growing on his lips. "Yuji. Yuji Shujin."
"Then let us conquer our enemies, Yuji."
"Yeah…partner."
Chapter End
NOTE: And Leonidas is here! Hopefully, Yuji's transition into liking Bakugan didn't seem too sudden. The boy is suffering from an adrenaline rush at the moment.
Meeting Alice next chapter will bring him back into his awkward teenage phase.
I know that in the game the MC meets Leo after meeting Alice. Decided to change things up a bit.
If I don't mention the name of Ability or Gate Cards, then they are simply just power ups. I'll do my best to make the effects work as properly as I can.
I do hope you guys enjoyed the battle; this was my first time writing a Bakugan Battle. Hopefully, I improve as the story continues.
See ya next time!
