Chapter 4: Call to Action.
The kids sat at the hospital, looking at the two students they injured. Rick Dicker, an NSA agent, stepped out of the room and the kids walked after him.
"How are they?" Violet asked.
"They'll live." Rick said.
"We're in trouble, aren't we?" Dash asked.
"With a suspension for 4 months, you think?" Rick asked.
"What can we say, Rick?" Violet asked.
"Nothing I haven't heard before." Rick said.
"We had to do something." Dash said.
"Yeah. Every time I hear someone from your family say those words, it means a month and a half of trouble for me, kids. It means hundreds of thousands of taxpayers' dollars." Rick said as he called the elevator.
"We know." Violet said.
"We gotta pay to keep the company quiet, we gotta pay damages, erase memories, relocate your family. Every time it gets harder. Money, money, money, money, money…We can't keep doing this, kids!" Rick said.
The elevator arrived, and Rick stepped in, "We appreciate what was done by your parents in the old days and your enthusiasm and will to do the right thing, but those days are over, and you kids need to be careful. From now on, you're on your own." he said as the door started to close after the kids followed him.
Once they arrived at the Parr House, Rick said, "Listen, kids, maybe I can relocate you, you know, for old time's sake."
"No, we can't do that. We all just got settled. But, thanks anyway, Mr. Dicker." Violet said.
Later, Dash and Violet were moping, knowing their parents were going to be mad over their suspensions, but hoping they would understand. Violet set down her bag, and was puzzled when she heard a thud that didn't sound like a book. She opened her bag and took out a yellow envelope. Dash noticed it and walked over to see what it was. Violet opened the envelope and took out a device that looked like an iPad. A small camera-like device came out of it and scanned both of their faces.
"Match: Dash and Violet Parr." it said before it scanned the room.
"Room is secure. Commence message." it said before the screen cut on and a white-haired woman appeared.
"Hello, Dash and Violet, children of Mr. Incredible. Yes, we know who you are. Rest assured, your secret is safe with us. My name is Mirage. We have something in common. According to the government, none of us exist. Please pay attention, as this message is classified and will not be repeated. I represent a top secret division of the government, designing and testing experimental technology, and we have need of your unique abilities. Something has happened at our remote testing facility. One of our experimental robots has gotten loose and escaped into the jungle. Worse, as it has lost control and it is contained within an isolated area, it threatens to cause incalculable damage to itself and to our facilities, jeopardizing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of equipment and resources. Because of its highly sensitive nature, we have been unable to reign it in ourselves and would like for you to aid us. This mission does not, nor will it ever, exist. If you accept, your payment will be triple your father's current annual salary. Call the number on the card. Voice-matching will be used to ensure security. The Supers aren't gone, children. You're still here. You can still do great things, or you can keep acting like vigilantes. You have 24 hours to respond. Think about it." the woman said before the screen cut off and a card came out from the bottom. They looked at it and saw it said, "MIRAGE. (866) 787-7476."
Dash and Violet looked surprised before they looked at each other.
"Did you hear that, Violet? We can finally use our powers for something!" Dash said.
"But, Dash, we've never battled a robot before, or any villains for that matter!" Violet said.
"Well, this can be our first experience!" Dash said.
"This isn't like the movies, you little twerp! This robot sounds highly dangerous! Are you seriously going to go up against a lethal machine to feed your own ego?!" Violet asked.
"It's not that. I'm just tired of not being able to use my powers. Not only that, but we can get paid well. Imagine all we can buy with that!" Dash said.
"Well…" Violet said.
"Besides, you're tired of hiding your powers, too, aren't you?" Dash asked.
"Yes." Violet said.
"So, why not take a chance to use your powers when they're needed? This could be our chance to make our names known to the world!" Dash said.
Violet sighed before she said, "Fine."
Suddenly, the tablet spoke again, "This message will self-destruct. Please stand back."
"Uh-oh." they said before the tablet blew up, not catching anything on fire, but causing smoke that activated the sprinkler system.
Later, Dash and Violet were helping their parents dry off the books and everything else that had gotten wet.
"You kids are so easily unpredictable." Helen said.
"Are we? We don't mean to be." Violet said.
"We know you kids don't like hiding your powers, and school is frustrating." Bob said.
"We just want you to know how much it means to us that you stick to it anyway." Helen said.
"Mom and Dad, that reminds us. About school?" Violet said.
"What?" Helen asked.
"Something's happened." Violet said.
"What?" Bob asked.
"They, uh…" Violet said.
"Go on, kids. Tell us." Bob said.
"Our schools are sending us to a competition where we're gonna work together as a team." Dash said.
"Competition?" Helen asked.
"Out of town. We're gonna be gone for a few days." Violet said.
"They've never sent you to a competition before. Sounds fun." Helen said.
"Yeah, it's gonna be." Violet said.
"See, your talents are being recognized. This is great!" Bob said.
"Yeah, it is." Dash said.
Later, the two of them called the number on the card.
"This is Dash and Violet Parr. We're in." Violet said.
