The Big Chill
Somewhere inside of the cryogenic lab, a woman is held inside of the cryogenic pod, frozen, and next to her was known as Kenji Himura, also known as Mr. Freeze, going through the computer while looking for the process of the cure for her terminal illness. He's missing some of the components he needs after learning of his wife's medical condition, did a research and try to make a cure. However, Kenji was also a vigilante known as Frost because of his Ice Quirk to fight crime and fight against criminals while helping Batman and his team years ago. But it changed when his uncle, Endeavor, stopped him and tried to arrest him, but Batman interfered and tried to stop the fight. Endeavor has different ideas and his ego caused him to launch Kenji into a cryogenic pod to turn him into Mr. Freeze along with his wife remained in cryostasis.
Kenji Himura is medium build man with red eyes and his skin is icy white. He wore a suit that resembles a hazmat suit, his entire face was covered in ice, and his gauntlets that allows him to fire ice and snow. He carries the Freeze Gun.
"This is how I'll always remember you, surrounded by winter, forever young, forever beautiful. Rest well, my love. My uncle, who took everything from me will learn that revenge is a dish...best served cold." Mr. Freeze said, opened his red eyes.
In Japan, the weather informed them that in summer will be hot and the civilians were warned that they need to stay cool and wear some sunscreen in case if they'll be at the beach. But few hours at night, the criminals are quietly moving the cargo full of money and drugs inside of the ship since they made a deal by a foreigner crime lord in Venezuela. But as soon as they're about to load more drugs and money into the ship, they felt the temperature is dropping and it got them in dread when the warehouse is turned into ice and the blizzard is blowing them, making the criminals shivered to their spine. Mr. Freeze revealed himself from the blizzard with a scowl on his face.
"Weather's a bit...monkey." Mr. Freeze said. "And...you shouldn't be doing drugs, it's bad for your health."
"Just w-who do you think...you are?!"
"I'm known as Mr. Freeze." Mr. Freeze told him when his feet turns the floor into ice.
And just as one of the criminals was about to charge after him, Mr. Freeze aims his hand and use his Ice Quirk to freeze him entirely, making them flinch.
"What do you want?!"
"Money, for the funds of my research." Mr. Freeze answered, breaking the cargo and taking the money into the duffle bag. "This much should do, but it won't mean I'm letting all of you out alive."
When Mr. Freeze finishes putting the money in his bag, he then started freezing the criminals with ice and suddenly left the warehouse.
"Have an ice evening." Mr. Freeze said.
While at the Wayne Manor in Gotham City, Ethan and Robin are working something inside of the batcave, which they're sweating because of the summer heat. Milo was watching them, couldn't stand the two staying in the manor while decided to make a suggestion.
"All crime-fighting and no play make Master Ethan and Mrs. Eri an extremely dull individual. Even the Batman and Robin deserves to go on holidays once in a while, wouldn't you say?" Milo told them.
"Milo, you know how stir crazy we'd be lying on some beach?" Ethan counters with a question.
"Which is why I've arranged for an athletic retreat, away to hone the Batman and Robin's body and reflexes, not to mention to escape this heat wave." Milo remarked, grabs the skis which it got their attention.
"You've booked for reservations, haven't you?" Eri asks, causing Milo to smirk slyly with a shrug. "If we go, it'll only to make you happy."
"And we'll let them know where we're going for a vacation." Ethan adds when the Batwave sounded the alarm as Martin Manhunter revealed himself from the screen. "J'onn, what's happening up there."
"There have been an incident at the harbor in Japan." J'onn answered, showing the news in Japan.
"The cargo turned into ice at the harbor, a vigilante has turned them frozen solid, not to mention leaving drugs frozen. Little is known about the bizarre perpetrator calling himself...Mr. Freeze."
Ethan widen his eyes in shock with disbelief, couldn't believe that Mr. Freeze is still alive after all these years. He even remembered of Bruce Wayne, telling him about Victor Fries, known as Mr. Freeze, was once a cryogenic scientist trying to save his wife, Nora Fries, by freezing her into the cryogenic pod while try to make a cure for her, but the process was destroyed by Ferris Boyle and turning him into a vengeful villain. Even though, Ethan doesn't blame Victor for trying to save his wife from her terminal illness and does everything he can. Bruce thwarted his plan after telling him that Ferris Boyle will get the justice after learning from Mr. Freeze's side of the story and gathering evidence.
"Felt a familiar face?" J'onn inquires.
"It's more than that. Bruce told me about Victor." Ethan answered. "I couldn't believe that he's alive all these years."
"I'm not surprised. Call your team and get ready for teleporting back to Japan, they'll be needing you now." J'onn suggested.
"I think we should, I'll let them know what's going on." Ethan said with a serious glare, ending transmission.
"There, you see? It's a sign, a winter retreat is in your future." Milo said.
After Batman gives Batgirl, Catwoman, and Red Robin in explanation about Mr. Freeze, neither of them couldn't believe that Victor is still alive and they thought he died and joining his wife in the afterlife. But right now, the JMP and Endeavor are at the scene trying to thaw the ice and getting some information from the criminals, who are completely shivering in the cold while drinking some hot beverages. The civilians are looking at the freezing warehouse, trying to find out who causes it.
"Any idea who is this 'Mr. Freeze'?" Endeavor questions, crossed his arms.
"A former cryogenic scientist and a husband to Nora, who's diagnosed of terminal illness. I remembered him back in Gotham City years ago." Barbara told him. "Because of Boyle, the process is destroyed, and two lives were lost along with Victor named himself as Mr. Freeze."
"Shouldn't he be dead?" Endeavor questions again.
"I asked myself the same thing, but it does fit his MO." Barbara points out. "The medics said they're hypothermic, they'll pull through once we get the information and have them arrested for illegal drugs and money."
It got their attention when one of the criminals turned to them, shivered.
"No thanks to that...maniac!"
"So, how'd he do it?" Naomasa questions.
"He uses a Freeze Gun, same weapon Victor uses." Barbara answered. "If nothing else, he probably improved his equipment to make his gauntlets freeze instantly. Bascially, flash freeze."
While Barbara and Endeavor are having discussions about Mr. Freeze's motive and how he survived, Batman and his team along with the Todoroki siblings are watching, listening by using a device that resembles a miniature satellite gun.
"Still can't believe Mr. Freeze is back, after what happen to Nora." Batgirl said, looking through her binoculars. "Wonder how many enemies did Bruce made and why we have to encounter?"
"You can count the Riddler, Hush, Ra's, League of Assassins, Man-Bat, Two-Face, Court of Owls, and Scarecrow. But if I have to guess, many." Catwoman states. "But otherwise, who knows."
"After you told us about this Mr. Freeze character, he sounded pretty bad news." Dabi told them.
"Not bad, he's just trying everything to save Nora. But after her death, it didn't end well for him because of Boyle." Batman points out, then puts the gadget back on his utility belt and grabs another gadget that has infrared scope. "Though, they can't see it with the naked eye, but infrared."
Batman then goes through the infrared scope, trying to find something that's cold when he saw tracks.
"You got anything?" Red Robin inquires.
"Yeah, his trail is clear as crystal." Batman answered as the helicopter hovers to the scene, causing them to quickly leave and riding their vehicles while Dabi uses his Fire to take flight and Shoto slides with ice. "And his trail leads across Japan."
At the Endeavor Agency, Mr. Freeze was able to easily beat Endeavor's sidekicks with his freezing ability and his suit. Mr. Freeze is searching for Endeavor and get his revenge, but seeing that he's not here and not realizing that he's at the scene with the police.
"Hmm, it would seem he isn't here." Mr. Freeze said, notices the phone. "Maybe I should make the call and bring him here."
But soon as he got the number while calling Endeavor.
"What? I'm busy at the scene!" Endeavor said.
"Now is that a way to say hello to your nephew, who's once a scientist, married to Io, and...former vigilante as Frost." Mr. Freeze said calmly, making Endeavor shocked.
"K-Kenji?! But how?! Y-You're dead!" Endeavor exclaims in disbelieve.
"I'm neither living nor dead, it was you who created me into this." Mr. Freeze remarked. "I am now known as...Mr. Freeze."
Endeavor couldn't believe what he has heard, nephew who's a former scientist and vigilante, now turned into a criminal as Mr. Freeze.
"What have you done?! What did you do to my sidekicks?!" Endeavor demanded.
"I did some make-up to my liking on your agency. Oh, and your sidekicks are froze stiff, not that you care considering you were heartless to your family and letting your ego get the better of you due to your head calling yourself a Hero that you're truly not." Mr. Freeze taunts. "Also, Batman and his team are much better hero than you'll ever be."
"I swear, when I find you at my Agency, I'll finish what I've started! And I'll make sure you stay dead along with your dead wife!" Endeavor shouts angrily, ending the call.
"Well, that could've gone better." Mr. Freeze said, hangs the phone. "Now, all I do is wait."
"But he won't get to you, Victor..." The voice of Batman said when he and Robin revealed themselves from the shadows.
"Batman." Mr. Freeze said with a scowl. "This isn't your fight. This is him and me."
Then, the batarangs were thrown and it explodes, making Mr. Freeze stumble back and Dabi punches him in the ice.
"Sorry, but when it comes to my father and the agency, this makes it our business." Dabi remarked.
"Then you left me no choice." Mr. Freeze said as Batman and Robin throw their batarangs at him, but he freezes them instantly. "It's been a long time during our first encounter, Batman. Same could be said about your team."
"What do you mean? We only met." Batman said in confusion.
Mr. Freeze slams his hands down to the icy ground, firing his ice spikes to the ground which made Dabi, Batman, and Robin dodge them by jumping in the air. Batman and Robin lands on the ground, but surrounded by ice spikes when Dabi and Shoto fired their flames to melt them. Batgirl and Red Robin kicks Mr. Freeze from behind and Catwoman delivers a jumping spin kick to the face, making him stumble back a bit.
"I have to say, you never lost your touch, but..."
Mr. Freeze raise his hand and calling out the blizzard, causing Batman and his team to block it with their cloaks while Dabi and Shoto uses the flames as he turning the Endeavor Agency into frozen blizzard. Mr. Freeze then lowers his hand down to call off the blizzard when Batman and his team merged out of the snow, but they're starting to shiver.
"...I've been making some improvements. And you and I know that I'm not Victor, because he died of aging, and he joined with Nora in the afterlife." Mr. Freeze told them. "But surely, you would know that I was once a vigilante to help you fight against criminals. And, I've told you about my wife."
"What are you talking about?" Batman asks.
"You better give us a straight answer, because you were using Victor's criminal name without any second thoughts!" Catwoman shouts with a glare.
"Hmm...I guess I have done some changes, but it makes sense. Maybe this would help along with the name...Kenji Himura..." Mr. Freeze said as he shattered the ice to reveal his face with a smirk, leaving them shocked.
"Kenji?!" Batman exclaims. "But you're..."
"I do not blame any of you of my condition, I only want revenge on Endeavor." Mr. Freeze cuts in. "After 4 years ago..."
Flashback
At Musutafu City 4 years ago, Kenji Himura known as Frost stopped the criminal with his Ice Quirk at the laboratory while tried to find a solution to cure his wife, who's diagnosed of terminal illness, and looking for the components. But was stopped when Endeavor lands in front of him with a smirk on his face, causing Frost to glare at him as he readied his fighting.
"...I remembered when our paths crossed. I was once a vigilante, like all of you. I was the most skilled fighter and experienced with my Ice Quirk, learning the strengths and weaknesses. I've learned from the news of Auntie Rei Todoroki is being held at the psychiatric ward because of him not being with his children nor try to help his wife. I blamed him for everything he has done to them."
Endeavor use his Hellflame Quirk to fire his flames which Frost conjures an ice wall to block him, creating steamy fog. Frost charges after him and delivers a flying kick to the face, making him stumble. Frost then conjures ice gauntlets and ice shin guards as he then delivers a flurry of punches and kicks. Endeavor was about to deliver a punch, but Frost grabs hold of his arm and deliver the Ippon seionage, before following by grabbing hold of his fingers and breaks him as the Flame Hero screams in pain.
Endeavor fires his flame with his other hand, which Frost reacts quickly by dodging it and fires his ice at the Flame Hero. Endeavor dodges, then charges after him with enraged look, but Frost fires his ice at him, freezing his body which it didn't last for long because of his heat that's too much to handle. Frost slams his hands to the ground, launching ice spikes which Endeavor finally had enough as he fires his flames to melt the ice, causing the steamy fog to appear. Endeavor tries to look for Frost, but the fog was too thick when the Ice vigilante freezes his legs as he revealed himself from the fog. Endeavor and Frost were about to end the fight when Batman, Batgirl, and Red Robin lands on the ground from the ceiling, stopping the fight between the two.
Letting his ego get the better of him, Endeavor fires his flames at Frost, launching him right into the cryogenic pod and the electric cable got inside which causes the lab to explode. Endeavor then launched himself out of the lab with a triumph smile on his face, but Batman and his team pushes the rubble out while noticing Frost is left helpless inside of the cryogenic pod, freezing and electrocuted. Batman rushes to the pod, trying to get him out which knocked him back due to the electric cables and sent him flying into the floor. Batman, Batgirl, and Red Robin could only watch Frost became frozen, along with the eyes turn into red, his heart slowly beating and became frozen along with his blood veins as he wheezes helpless.
"...I was electrocuted, but the same instant the blood froze in my veins..."
The police took him into the lab for research while try to find a way to get Kenji back.
"...Was I still among the living? Presumably, the scientists were trying to determine that, but I made their job easier..."
Kenji opens his red eyes, fires his ice power to break the pod open which made the scientist flinch. Kenji slowly got out of the pod and walk a few steps, but the feet touches the floor turns into ice.
"...My body had mutated, neither living nor dead, I was now a walking cryonic abomination! Because of my uncle, my thoughts are now revenge for what he did to me and causing me to delay on finding the cure for my wife! It didn't take much for me to convince one of them to make a suit to contain my frosty disposition."
Flashback Ended
"...Until I make my move on finding the components I need to develop a cure to help my wife and take down Endeavor and his ego along with his reputation." Mr. Freeze continued. "But his reputation has went down years ago, and I even recognize of Toya when I first met him. He had the same eyes like his mother and his father's stubborn pride."
"Hey!" Dabi remarked, resenting that offense.
"Nonetheless, both Toya and Shoto had similar quirks like their father, but most of his children had their mother's quirk along with their hair and the image." Mr. Freeze said, ignoring his cousin. "It just doesn't change the fact that Endeavor needs to face reality and think about the consequences of his actions."
But just as he was about to continue, Endeavor destroys the door with his flames and revealing himself from the smoke with anger look on his face.
"Mr. Freeze...I should've left you back to Hell where you belong!" Endeavor snarled, earned his attention.
"You first!" Mr. Freeze remarked, fires his ice from his gauntlet at him which made the Flame Hero counters with fire, creating steam fog. "Just like old times, but only..."
Mr. Freeze then fires his Freeze Gun at Endeavor, freezing the Flame Hero entirely except the head as he revealed himself.
"...I have better equipment and my powers have improvements." Mr. Freeze finished his sentence, but notices Batman and his team and the Todoroki siblings. "Another time, Endeavor. Soon, I'll have what I came for...unless you catch a death of cold."
And with that, Mr. Freeze conjures an ice slide by breaking the windows as he then flees with a sinister laugh, sliding down to the ground. Batman and his team turns to see Endeavor was about to break free from his icy prison, pulling out the smokescreen and throws it at him and the smoke appears. But it didn't take long for the Flame Hero to free himself and clearing the smoke as he rushes at the hole, noticed that the Bat Family and the Todoroki siblings along with Mr. Freeze got away. It got Endeavor very mad he let out a loud scream with fury.
At the Wayne Manor in Japan, Barbara is inside of the Batcave waiting for them to return. However, it wasn't she's expecting when the Bat Family and the Todoroki siblings arrived when Batman, Batgirl, Red Robin, Catwoman, and Robin collapses down to the floor which made her gasp as she, Toya, and Shoto rushes to them.
Few minutes later, both Toya and Shoto were warming them up with their Fire Quirks, after they give Barbara, Dick, and Jason as explanation of what happen. They told them about Kenji Himura was once a cryogenic scientist, had a wife who's diagnosed of terminal illness, a former vigilante known as Frost while try to find the components for the cure, and taking up Victor's mantle as the new Mr. Freeze after Endeavor launching him into the cryogenic pod years ago. Both Dick and Jason were shocked about their situation, and it didn't surprise them the fact that they're facing Bruce's old enemy, Mr. Freeze, but someone else took up his mantle who happens to be a former vigilante.
"With everything told us, you guys had it rough." Dick states, watching them shivered while Toya and Shoto warming them up.
"Won't be the first time, but I don't it'll be the last either." Emily remarked.
"Maybe so, but you guys need to remember, Mr. Freeze isn't like any other criminals you've faced. This happened before in Gotham City." Barbara points out. "With Kenji on the loose, things have gotten complicated."
"What do you mean?" Eri inquires.
"You should see this." Barbara said, turns on the TV to reveal the news.
"In other news, the Endeavor Agency is completely frozen along with the Flame Hero's sidekicks. They were easily overwhelmed by the same perpetrator known as Mr. Freeze, and even Endeavor was furious of his escape while leaving him frozen."
"I was furious for what he did to my sidekicks and turning my Agency into ice! Of course, Batman and his group of sidekicks came along, I should've arrested them when I've had the chance! And let's not forget, Mr. Freeze, when I find you, I will send you to Hell!"
Barbara then turns off the TV, which left Ethan, Lita, James, Emily, and Eri very upset that Endeavor called them 'sidekicks'.
"No surprise he's just using that excuse to make a fool of himself." James stated.
"What did you expect? He's just stubborn and ambition." Toya remarked. "And if what Kenji said is true, then we need to get to him before old man does anything stupid."
"Then, let's get going." Ethan said, but Barbara held her hand to stop them.
"You five should focus on getting yourselves warmed up in the fire. I can't have you going around when you're running a fever and common cold." Barbara points out. "I'll make some chicken soup, it'll help the cold."
Barbara then heads to the kitchen to make some soup, leaving them alone in the living room.
"She's right you guys, you focus on getting rid of the cold, we'll handle this from here." Dick suggests, agreeing with the Commissioner.
"Alright, but be careful. His powers are natural and unnatural because of his Ice Quirk." Ethan warned them. "And he carries a Freeze Gun."
"You got it." Jason nods with a smirk, turns to Toya and Shoto. "We'll need you guys help us take care of Mr. Freeze."
"Fine with us, but we need to find him before Endeavor." Shoto points out.
"But you guys need a new suit. We've been putting it together to weatherproof your suits, I'll be sending coordinates to deliver them to you both." Ethan suggests, as he sneezes.
Dick and Jason gave them a nod as they head for Batcave to get their new suits while the Todoroki siblings went ahead to find Kenji before Endeavor beats them to it.
Back at the Musutafu City, Mr. Freeze and Endeavor are fighting at the street, firing their ice and fire at each other. The civilians were watching the whole scene, some are recording the fight, and the police are keeping them away from the fight while preventing them for getting involved in the crossfire. Endeavor fires his flames, which Mr. Freeze quickly dodges and fires his ice at his legs along with his hands to prevent him from flying as the Flame Hero lands on the ground with a painful grunt.
"Now...this place will be your tomb..." Mr. Freeze said with a snarl, raising his hands in the air as he fires the blizzard in the sky, dropping the temperature dramatically as he looked down at Endeavor. "...And I'll have my revenge..."
He then started firing his ice powers by turning the streets into icy blizzard, causing the civilians to panic as they head inside of the buildings while the police are evacuating them people. Both Dabi and Shoto are watching from above at the top of the building, seeing their father tried to break free from his icy prison.
"Guess he beats us before we even get to him." Dabi comments, crossed his arms. "Again, no surprise Endeavor is stubborn."
"Sounds like you hold a grudge." The voice of Nightwing said, earned their attention when they saw him and Red Hood in their weatherproof suits.
"That's an understatement, and more like I loathed him for what he did to our family." Dabi points out. "Just wish the role is different and old man would've been a father instead of this."
"Which I don't think it'll happen." The voice of Batman said, earned their attention when they saw them also in weatherproof suit.
"What are you guys doing here?" Nightwing questions with a glare. "She told you to stay here."
"Mom knows that we couldn't stay here and Japan needs us to finish this." Batgirl told him. "And we've already had cough syrup a while ago."
Back at the scene, the streets have turned into ice dome and surrounds in between the buildings, vehicles, civilians, and streets have been completely frozen. Endeavor was also frozen after Mr. Freeze froze his entire body except the head. Mr. Freeze slowly walk towards him with a vengeful look on his face.
"...For years, I have been researching her illness...For years, I have been researching the cure and looking for the components, tried to make the formula...But you took everything from me...My career, my wife, my research, and my life...I have been inside of the cryogenic pod for years...waiting for the right time to end you!" Mr. Freeze said with a sinister glare. "And your reputation will be worse, once I'm done with you...and the whole world will know what you really are!"
"A-All of this...was for you to get back at me...by killing me!" Endeavor shouts weakly, shivering.
"No...by humiliating you...and ending your career! Like you did to me after you ended my career and my reputation as Frost!" Mr. Freeze retorted, shattering his ice to reveal his face, making Endeavor shocked.
"K-Kenji?!" Endeavor exclaims in disbelief.
"The same nephew you failed to remember and launched me into the cryogenic pod when I was Frost!" Mr. Freeze snapped. "After what you did to Aunt Rei and my cousins for the past years, that ship has sailed! I once respected you for marrying Aunt Rei, only because she deserves to be happy...all I want is to help...I only wanted to help for the family and help you fight criminals, and what did you do to me?!"
Endeavor was shocked, couldn't even form words in his mouth.
"It tore me apart...I've lost everything because of you! My life, my career, and my wife is fallen ill! I was desperate on finding the cure for her illness after I became a scientist, and I'd do anything on helping Io, even if it means by frozen her in the cryogenic pod to prevent the illness to spread further!" Mr. Freeze continued.
"I-I-I was in-"
"No, you don't ever have the right to say you're feeling guilty for what you have done in the past!" Mr. Freeze interrupts. "Your family has already fallen apart from the start because of your ego is high in your ass and your ambitions were too great to admit of your foolishness!"
Endeavor can only snarls, doesn't want to admit that Mr. Freeze was right.
"And now...I will have my revenge!" Mr. Freeze said.
But just as Mr. Freeze was about to froze Endeavor, the batarangs were thrown and explodes, making him stumble back as the Bat Family, and the Todoroki siblings arrived from the scene.
"You!" Mr. Freeze said angrily. "I warned you to never interfere from the revenge!"
"No, this isn't what your wife would want!" Batman remarked. "There's always another way!"
Mr. Freeze won't hear any of it as he fires his ice from his gauntlets, but Dabi went in front of them as he fires his blue flames and overwhelming him easily, sending him flying right towards the ice wall. Mr. Freeze falls down to the icy ground and his ice was shattered. Nightwing threw his batarang, stunning him with electricity as he shouts in pain, knocking Mr. Freeze out.
"Sorry, Kenji...you left us with no options." Catwoman said sadly.
After the fight was over, the JMP takes Mr. Freeze to the van, but he stops as he turns to the Bat Family and Todoroki siblings.
"I have one last request before I leave...please, help my wife." Mr. Freeze pleads. "I'll give you the location of where I kept her."
The Bat Family and the Todoroki siblings can tell he wanted to help Io while try to find the components for the cure, replied with a nod as Mr. Freeze told them where she was hidden.
At the Watchtower, they give the Justice League an explanation and why Io was in the cryogenic pod. It got them shocked of they have learned of Kenji, who was formerly a vigilante known as Frost, and a current criminal known as Mr. Freeze which it would explain why he took up Victor's mantle. Daito was doing some research of Io's terminal illness.
"Do you think you can help her?" Batman questions.
"I'm no miracle worker, but I can't promise you that she'd be well." Daito replied. "But I think Alex Luthor can help out, and he had one of the scientists and medics that can do better than I can."
"I'll let him know what happen." Green Lantern (John Stewart) suggests as he calls Alex Luthor.
At the Belle Reve, Mr. Freeze was currently in the icy prison because of the result of the cryogenic pod that turns his entire body to ice. He looks at the photo of his wife with sad look on his face.
"I failed you...I wish there were another way for me to say it...but I cannot.." Kenji said as tears were filled in his eyes. "I can only beg your forgiveness...And pray you'll hear me somehow, someplace...someplace where a warm hand awaits for my..."
Kenji then looked down to the floor sadly, hoping that the League could help cure Io and hoping to see here, begging for his forgiveness.
