In this fanfiction of my, I change the genre from comedy to dark as I was curious on it. So I write one.

I don't own any chracters except my OCs. All credits goes to the respective author.

I exited a popular establishment. It was a shop that sold games, consoles, and PCs. On my hand is a copy of a popular soulsborne game. As I was a hardcore RPG and action player, as apart from doing exercises, I spent the majority of my time playing games.

Playing these dark RPG games is my way of escaping reality and to forget my current problems.

As my life started to go downhill after that event. At first, I endured it but after many similar events occurred one after the other... I practically shut myself off from society.

I live alone, with no one to rely on but myself. As I—

"Idiot, stop that self-debasement. I just want to play the game to forget anything else." I muttered and shook my head.

As I walked, I saw the stares of people around me. It was just a stare given to a passing stranger and nothing more. But some moved away as if they feared me.

I just ignored it. As it was a common occurrence.

As I observed my surroundings, I noticed a girl crossing the road with her attention on her phone. A truck was speeding fast towards her.

The truck rang its horn so that the girl may get out of the way.

But she didn't notice it, too absorbed in her phone to give a portion of her attention to what's around.

Many people yelled and shouted at her, but she seemed to hear nothing at all. And the truck isn't slowing down.

Without hesitation, I dropped the game I was holding and ran towards her, pushing her out of the way.

"Eek!" She yelped as I pushed her out to safety.

Unfortunately, I didn't make it out in time and the truck rammed against me.

Sign, so much for my luck.

Immense pain shot out to various parts of my body, my vision is spinning and only ringing was all I heard.

I then blacked out.

I felt floating, my whole body being weightless and I can't feel a thing.

"Welcome to the afterlife, Satou Kazuma. Your life may have been short, but your life is now over."

A soothing voice that echoes like bells rang through the quiet space.

I then opened my eyes and saw a girl that can only be described by my brain as a 'Goddess.'

She has flowing blue hair and deep blue eyes with pale white skin that is free of any blemishes. Her face can only be described as beautiful, being perfectly in between cute and pretty.

As I was struck in awe in her majestic beauty, she spoke.

"I am the Goddess of Waters, Aqua. I am here to judge your deeds from your life.

"You did neither bad nor good. But you can choose either to go to Heaven or be returned back to the Cycle of Life."

The Goddess Aqua stated as she looked into me. But I have a question.

"Is the girl that I saved okay?" I asked, that was my main concerned at the moment.

"The girl that you pushed from the accident? Yes, she's okay. She only suffers minor injuries but she's still alive."

I breathe a sigh of relief. The girl is too young to die, while my life is just a waste. So logically, her's has more value.

As I concluded my thoughts, I turned to the present situation.

"What is this Cycle of Life that you speak of?" I asked.

"This is what we call the cycle for the souls to be reborn once again. When a soul is reborn, they will start off their new life as a baby, without carrying the memories of their past life."

I see. So in short, reincarnation.

But I don't want to. I don't trust my reincarnated self to not do any idiotic things or any action that my reincarnated self will regret later. I am also afraid of the uncertain future that they will face off.

So going to Heaven is my other choice. But before I can decide, the Goddess spoke once more...

"But there is also a third option. That is, to be sent to another world governed by my fellow Goddess with the rules of magic involved. You will be given a special ability or a Divine Relic of your choice and will be tasked to defeat the Demon King."

The goddess in front of me then explained in detail.

In a nutshell, it is the typical fantasy setting that is done by various forms of media like games, novels, anime, and mangas.

My previous life is already bad enough, now, how about I challenge this Demon King and make it much worse?

Not to mention that the Goddess is calm at the start, but then she fidgets around and has a nervous expression at the end. As if there is something much more, and it worries me.

"First of, why don't you save this world then?" I asked.

I was wondering why bother sending people there and not just do it yourself, or at least, send an agent or something.

"Ah, that. The world is a human world, so humans should manage it. Meaning it's their responsibility to save their own world."

I see... So the gods can't interfere on human matters. Okay then, next question.

"How much does this Demon King terrorized this other world?" I asked, trying to get an answer to my worry.

"W-well, the Demon King managed to conquer a wh-whole continent that he resides in. And in the o-other continent... O-only three ma-major kingdoms are left standing...

I see... The answer is simple then.

"I refuse."

I said instantly with clarity.

...

"H-huh?!"

The goddess is flabbergasted and has her mouth open.

But well, who is in their right mind would go there and challenge this Demon King when the world is now a step away from being doomed?

I guess there are those special idiots with a 'hero complex' that are willing. But they are naive and wouldn't last long at all.

And me? Oh stop with this foolishness. I am not the same with those special idiots. I have a functional brain.

"W-why wouldn't you go there?!"

The goddess yelled as she stood up from her seat. I looked at her straight to the eye and replied.

"Why would I? Do I look like a moron?"

"I m-mean, we the gods will aid you in there! We will give you a special ability or Divine Relic of your choice to help you vanquish the Demon King!"

That's an enticing offer. But not enough.

Even with a special ability or these so-called 'Divine Relics'—as long as the person has no experience with fighting, they will not be able to defeat even a high rank member of the Demon King's army.

Even if they could, considering how powerful the Demon King is, since he rendered the world to only having three major kingdoms left standing... It would be a pipedream.

The question is, how did the Demon King manage to do that in the first place?

Since I can't get any answers to my question without voicing them, I asked the only person I know that can answer it.

"How did the Demon King manage to nearly conquer the whole world in the first place?"

"W-well, I have sent many people there. Although some nearly manage to kill one of his generals, one goes straight and challenges the Demon King himself... and loses. His Divine Relic was taken by the Demon King and somehow managed to use it..."

I see... So it was the fault of some random guy that went cocky...

I wanted to criticize her for this but... Considering they are giving either a special ability or a Divine Relic, they must have thought of the possibility of it going to the hands of others and planned some countermeasures.

And this Demon King is a rare outlier that broke the countermeasures placed...

Which solidifies my decision of not going there.

"Well, good luck finding some—" as I was speaking, a door opened and another person appeared.

Like the goddess in front of me, she is also very beautiful. She has flowing silver hair that reaches to her ankles and gorgeous purple eyes that hold experience of life.

"Aqua-senpai, I have news for you." She stated as she looked at the Goddess Aqua.

"Hey, is it okay for me to hear it as well?" I said aloud first before the goddess in front of me can say anything, as I don't want to be roped in with what they are doing.

The Goddess Aqua meanwhile, just gawked at me. But I ignored her.

"It's okay."

The new goddess said as she turned to look at me.

"Let me introduce myself first. I am the Goddess of Fortune, Eris. And I governed the world that Aqua-senpai tried to send you."

I see... The failed caretaker now joined the conversation. Great.

While I was insulting her in my mind, she turned back to the blue-haired goddess.

"Aqua-senpai, another person that you sent has been slain. Luckily, he doesn't possess a Divine Relic and chose a special ability instead. I have finished talking to him and the High Council has decided on a memorandum."

The silver-haired goddess said and the blue-haired one just nodded her head. She seems to be afraid...

"Mr. Kazuma Satou, if you have decided to challenge the Demon King, you will be allowed to bring with you three things of your choice. It can be anything. Please, save my world."

The silver-haired goddess explained and bowed at the end. She seemed very worried. I don't know if there is a punishment for this failure, but I don't sense that this goddess is worried because of that.

This silver-haired goddess cared for the people, and the world she governs. To the point that she will bow down to a mortal, to someone like me.

While I don't help others easily without getting anything in return—well except for others I deemed to help out—that was mostly the case.

In this case, I don't need anything from her. As I found this situation beneficial. Perhaps I can find happiness in this one. If so, that is enough of a payment for me.

With my mind made up, I looked at the bowing goddess and spoke.

"Goddess, raise your head. You shouldn't bow down to someone like me."

The silver-haired goddess complied and raised her head. I then looked at her straight to the eye, with all seriousness.

"I will defeat the Demon King." I declared with conviction. "This isn't for you, nor your people, nor your world. But for my sake." I hurriedly added as I averted my gaze.

"H-hey, shouldn't you be doing at that the first place! And hold your tongue mortal! Your speaking wi—"

"A-Aqua-senpai! Stop it!"

As the blue-haired goddess yelled at me—which I forgot that is here in the first place, and as usual I ignored her—the silver-haired goddess hurriedly tried to stop her. She then turned to look at me with a grateful expression.

"You have my gratitude Mr. Kazuma Satou. Now, before I send you to the world I govern, I want you to choose what you will bring first."

"But Eris! Are you—"

"Aqua-senpai, it's okay."

"Hmp! If you say so."

While the two goddesses are talking to each other, I just ignored them as I examined the catalog that suddenly appeared in front of me.

It listed various weapons, shields, armors, accessories, and abilities such as 'Super Strength', 'Profound Magic', 'Sacred Sword Arondight', 'Demon Sword Murasame', the list goes on.

But I'm not an idiot. From what I learned from the blue-haired goddess, the Demon King got his power to drastically increase after he gets his hands on a Divine Relic. So bringing gear with me is a no go. Not to mention that I'll be practically powerless without it.

So choosing an ability will be the wise choice. The problem is, what kind?

As I was skimming the catalog, a certain ability caught my interest.

'Hero's Prized Property.' It is a skill that upgrades a physical item into something equivalent of a Divine Relic by pouring mana into it.

Normally, I would dismiss this ability, but after thinking deeply into it, it has a lot more pros than cons.

One of which, is that I will basically have an indefinite number of Divine Relics so long as I have mana. And the good part, the item will revert back to normal if I stopped pouring mana into it. Which allows me to strengthen myself without any consequences.

But here comes another problem, even if I have a lot of items that can be turned into something equivalent to a Divine Relic, so long as I don't have any means to fully utilize it—like weaker stats if there is such system—the item will be practically useless.

And I don't see anything similar to boosting all parameters in the catalog.

As if she noticed my thoughts, the silver-haired goddess spoke.

"If the ability you have in mind isn't there, you can simply ask for it."

Well, what's the use of browsing it in the first place then?

I just sighed and stated what I needed.

"For my three things that I will bring, I decided to choose 'Hero's Prized Property,' a way to boost my stat growth, and a favor from you that I can cash in anytime."

"I see, the ability will be automatically given to you upon your descent into my world. The other ability to boost stat growth will also be provided and be given at the same time as your other ability. But I can only give you a single favor. Is that okay?"

I just nodded in response. A single favor is enough. Also, before I forget.

"I also want to be given knowledge about the world that I was trying to save beforehand as well as the ability to understand the language."

"Learning the language is no problem as we will provide you with that in the first place, same goes with your starting funds. But I'll see what I can do with this request of yours."

I nodded in understanding.

"If there are no more concerns. Mr. Kazuma Satou, I will now send you to the world I gorvern, as one of the candidates for the Hero who will defeat the Demon King. Whenever you do so, you will receive a gift from the gods."

"A gift...?" I asked as a large blue magic circle started to materialize underneath my feet.

"Yes. One equal with the worth of a world saved. We, the gods will grant any one thing you should ask."

For the first time in my teenage years, I listened to someone attentively. So if I manage to defeat the Demon King, I can have a second—or a third—shot to find happiness.

The silver-haired goddess, or Miss Eris, turned her gaze to the blue-haired goddess.

"And Aqua-senpai, as punishment, the High Council decided to send you to the world that you have doomed with your power mortalized. You are tasked to defeat the Demon King and right the world."

"I—... I understand..."

Surprised, I then turned to the blue-haired goddess. Miss Eris is more surprised than me which is understandable considering she was with her for a long time.

Based on her behavior earlier, I assumed she would argue back, but instead, she accepted it. It seems she's not that bad after all.

The magic circle widens in response, now including the blue-haired goddess with me.

"Mr. Kazuma Satou! I pray for your success as the one candidate of many who will bring down the Demon King. Now! Hie you hence!"

Miss Eris solemnly invoked, and a bright white light enveloped both me and the blue-haired goddess.
