BEAU HARLEM- ANATOL MODZELEWSKI.
VERINA MATHIS- LAURIJN BIJNEN
District 4, Panem. The same day.
Beau Harlem felt overly giddy as they stood in rows with the other young men of District 4. They had been waiting for this moment for longer than they'd care to remember. For a while, Beau knew that they were destined to be a Victor in the Hunger Games. For someone who was a master at showmanship as they obviously were, one could say that it was a given that Beau would end up representing District 4.
They were a star, there was really nothing else to say on the matter. To Beau Harlem, the world was a state and they were the main attraction; and for good reason. They earned money and fame as an influencer on social media. They had a knack for reviewing all sorts of things and people tended to respond well to Beau's opinions. Beau was a major celebrity in District 4 and even had a following in some of the other districts.
While all of the other potential tributes were watching President Snow's infomercial, Beau was already imagining themselves being crowned the Victor of the one hundred and twenty first annual Hunger Games. After that, they would be a national celebrity through the whole of Panem. They would be the center of attention throughout that years victory tour; as they should be. Even President Snow would have to kiss their ass.
"Wasn't that educational?" The tribute handler for District 4 asked with a chuckle once the short film was finished. "And now, I shall select at random...the courageous young man and woman who will have the honor of representing District 4 in the one hundred and twenty first annual Hunger Games; Let's start with the boys!"
"Come on..." Beau whispered to himself as the handler pulled out a slip of paper and spoke out a name that was not his. Before the reaped tribute could even take a step out of line, Beau immediately raised his hand.
"I volunteer as tribute!" He shouted as everyone turned to look at him.
"Well well, it would appear that we have a volunteer, come on up, young man!" The handler exclaimed as Beau quickly made his way up to the podium. "What's your name?"
"Beau Harlem!" The volunteer exclaimed with pride as he blew kisses to the crowd while enjoying his moment in the sun.
Verina Mathis watched as Beau Harlem volunteered and made his way up into the podium. He was always putting in airs and acting like he was the Heaven's greatest gift to mankind. As far as it looked, the odds were that he was going to be one of the first to die in the arena; unless he managed to seduce a fellow tribute into letting him be their bitch.
To be fair, Verina couldn't really be too hard on the little drama queen without coming across as a hypocrite. She planned to volunteer for the Hunger Games herself, if possible. Verina knew that if she could win the games, her family would be set for life. Her dad wouldn't have to fish anymore and her mom wouldn't have to be a doctor anymore. They could just live off her Victor money for the rest of their lives.
"And now, for the young ladies!" The handle called out as he began reaching for a name from the girl bowl. Before he could unfold it, Verina raised her hand.
"I volunteer as tribute!" She proclaimed, shocking some people on the crowd.
"This is exciting, isn't it. 2 volunteers from District 4. It warms the heart to see young people so willing to serve their country. What is your name?" The handler said with glee as Verina made her to the podium. She knew that she could win these games. She was a strong swimmer and no one was better than her with a trident.
"Verina Mathis." The fisherman's daughter said solemnly.
"It is my honor to present this years tributes from District 4: Beau Harlem and Verina Mathis!" He declared as the tributes looked at each other; promising that neither was going to make it out alive.
