QUNICY COSMO- MAX BAROUDI
JOULES NEWTON- AUBRI IBRAG
District 5, the same day.
Quincy Cosmo felt utterly frustrated as he stood in line with all of the other boys from District 5. This was time wasted, time that could be far better spent in his makeshift laboratory. It was stupid really, he was in the verge of a breakthrough with his latest invention that would finally fulfill his life long dream of being able to fly and instead of being at home to perfect it, he had to be at the reaping for the Hunger Games.
Quincy knew damn well that the odds of him being reaped were virtually nil. His father was the top name in Panem as far as cancer research was concerned and his mother was a highly south after event planner; so much that the mayor always looked to her when President Snow or someone from the Capitol came to District 5.
As the handler came on stage and showed the same short film as he did every year, Quincy's feelings kept hopping between his anxiousness to get back to his lab and his smugness that he would not be reaped for that year's Hunger Games or any other. After the film ended, the gander reached his hand into the bowl of names and withdrew a slip of paper.
"Quincy Cosmo!" The handler announced into the microphone as he read the name off of said slip as every boy in district 5 turned to look at the you man in question. As for Quincy himself, he was stunned into silence. The idea that he could honestly be reaped had never seemed possible before, but now it was a reality; his reality. Perhaps his sister could have been reaped, but not him.
"This...this isn't right..." Quincy stuttered as he didn't move a muscle.
"Well, come on...come on up." The handler commanded as a couple of peacekeepers waded into the crowd.
"This is bullshit, you can't reap me! After everything that my parents have done for this district; you owe me, you bastards!" Quincy argued as the peacekeepers grabbed him and began dragging him up to the stage as he made it clear that he was not going to go up voluntarily. He was fighting hard and one of the peacekeepers gave him a punch to the gut. This did get Quincy subdued enough to get him in the stage.
"A round of applause for the male tribute of District 5: Quincy Cosmo!" The handler announced as Quincy stood on the stage, gasping for air.
Joules Newton watched as Quincy Cosmo was gut punched before being dragged into the stage to be paraded in front of the capital cameras. As she watched the pathetic scene play out, she shook her head at the boy. She didn't want to be reaped any more than he did, but making a scene and fighting the peacekeepers would not accomplish anything; the only thing it would really do is get his family threatened in order to put a leash on him.
"And now, let's find out which lucky lady will join young Quincy in his trip to the capital." The handler said as reached into the 2nd bowl of papers and pulled out a slip. Joules looked over to Quincy's older sister Dana, who she knew from her time as a student. She looked like she was both devastated and slightly relieved that her brother had been reaped. Whether she would volunteer for the female tribute was anyone's guess.
"Joules Newton!" The handler exclaimed as Joules's heart skipped a beat. It just wasn't fair that she had to be reaped. As she slowly walked towards the stage, She looked toward her boyfriend, Trenton Flemming. If she was being honest, she only dates him because he was the mayor's son and he could get her special privileges. Otherwise, what good was he to her?
"Joules, I'm so sorry...I tried to get my dad to take your name out...but he wouldn't. I'm so sorry!" Trenton said as he teared up. She knew that he clearly loved her dearly, but to her, he was just a means to an end. She refused to even look at Trenton. Joules didn't want him to think that she was upset about it. It would make getting over her far easier after she won the games and found a better boyfriend.
"Here we are...it is my honor to present this years tributes who will have the honor of representing District 5 in the one hundred and twenty first annual Hunger Games: Quincy Cosmo and Joules Newton!" The handler proclaimed as there was scattered applause. The 2 tributes shook hands as Quincy was filled with fear while Joules was filled with resignation.
