District 7, the same day.

Paul Oakland felt every single one of his muscles flex as he stood in line with the other boys of District 7. Most of them looked scared as shit as the district handler read out loud from the treaty of treason. He barely paid attention to what was being said. He knew what was going to happen, what he was going to do. Volunteering for the Hunger Games wasn't something that Paul had spent all his life thinking that he was going to do; it was a choice that had more or less been thrust upon him.

Paul was engaged to a beautiful girl: Septima Reed. She was the love of his life and everything that Paul had wanted in a wife. Someone who knew their place and abided by the traditional gender roles that he believed in. Paul always enjoyed being with her after a long day of cutting down trees. He was more than ready to make her his wife, but she said that Paul needed to prove his love for her.

Septima had made Paul a life altering offer: If he would volunteer for the next Hunger Games and win, she would gladly be his wife and build a life with him. Paul had eagerly accepted because he saw it as his duty. If he was to take Septima as his wife, it would be his duty as a man to keep her safe. Winning the Hunger Games would prove that he could protect his family from any enemy. As he was steeling himself to his cause, the handler cleared his throat to begin the main attraction.

"Now, we shall find out which courageous young man and young woman shall have the honor of representing District 7 in the one hundred and twenty first annual Hunger Games!" The handler said as he reached his hand into the bowl of male names. The second he pulled out a slip, Paul raised his hand high.

"I volunteer as tribute!" He declared to a stunned crowd of his peers.

"It appears that we have a volunteer. Usually it is customary to wait until the name has been read, but I guess ambition is a virtue." The handler said as Paul walked through the crowd of boys to the stage. "What is your name, young man?"

"Paul Oakland, sir." The boy said as he looked to his family who were quite shocked indeed to see that he had willingly condemned himself to the Hunger Games.

"Let's have a round of applause for our volunteer, Paul Oakland!" The handler declared as a few people clapped their hands, but not many. Thankfully, Paul didn't really give a damn about what anyone else thought. He had done his duty as a man and as he locked eyes with Septima, he could see the admiration that resides in hers.

Madison Green looked on as Paul Oakland took his place in the podium. She honestly could not believe that anyone would be so big a fool to throw themselves into the Hell on Earth that was the Hunger Games. She decided at that moment that she didn't like Paul. His volunteering for the games, no matter his reason, felt like as if he was spitting on

Losing Benji in the 116th Hunger Games has all but destroyed her once happy family. She couldn't be near any decent sized body of water after watching her oldest brother drown on National TV. Her parents were depressed beyond measure, no longer taking pleasure in their work or their lives, her 2 older brothers tried to stay strong and stay positive, but that was easier said than done.

Sylvester and Oliver had managed to make it to 18 without being reaped or being forced to volunteer to save a sibling, but this was Madison's last year of eligibility for the Hunger Games and she had no sisters to take her place. If she was reaped, she would be on her own.

"And now, for the girls." The handler said as he reached his hands into the females bowl and while Maddie was rubbing the stun where her left pinky finger used to be in nervousness, he pulled out a slip of paper with a name typed out upon it. "Madison Greene!"

"My baby!" Her mother Isabel exclaimed in pure horror as she collapsed next to her husband who was just stunned into silence by this news.

"NO!" Her brothers screamed in unison as Maddie slowly made her way through the throng of girls and up to the stage; across from her co tribute.

"Let's here it for Paul Oakland and Madison Greene who will have the honor of representing District 7 in the one hundred and twenty first annual Hunger Games!" The handler declared with pride as he motioned for the 2 kids to shake hands; which they did reluctantly. Neither Paul nor Madison were particularly impressed with their team mate, but they each had their own objective: Paul to win a wife and Madison to win a life.
