Chapter 4: Nobody

[WN: See end of story].

Professor Gerald Robotnik's Journal Entry No. 18

Today marks a significant turning point in my research. After much deliberation, I have reached out to a scholar whose work on the heart may hold the key to advancing the Ultimate Lifeform project. Ansem the Wise, a renowned expert from Radiant Garden, has captured my attention with his profound theories on the nature of the heart and its intrinsic connection to both light and darkness.

I have extended an invitation to Ansem, requesting his presence here on the ARK. In my correspondence, I detailed the scope of my research and the potential synergies between our endeavors. His insights could be invaluable, perhaps even the missing piece needed to unlock the full potential of Project Shadow. I eagerly await his response, hopeful that our combined knowledge will pave the way for breakthroughs beyond our current understanding.

As I await word from Ansem, I have turned my attention to another pressing matter—one that requires a more hands-on approach. The legends surrounding Angel Island and the Mystic Ruins have always intrigued me, and recent findings suggest that there may be artifacts or remnants there that could further my research. These ancient ruins, steeped in mystery and lore, might hold secrets long forgotten, secrets that could be instrumental in perfecting the Ultimate Lifeform.

My plan is to travel down to Mobius and explore Angel Island firsthand. The island, said to float high above the Mystic Ruins, is rumored to be home to the Master Emerald, a powerful artifact that could potentially enhance my work. The journey will be fraught with challenges, but the potential rewards are too great to ignore.

The government's scrutiny has been unrelenting, their eyes ever watchful. This excursion must be conducted with the utmost secrecy to avoid drawing their attention. I have already begun preparations for the trip, ensuring that everything will be in place for a swift and covert departure. The path ahead is fraught with uncertainty, but with Ansem's collaboration and the potential discoveries on Angel Island, I am confident that we are on the verge of a monumental breakthrough. The future of Project Shadow hangs in the balance, and I will stop at nothing to see it realized.

PRESENT - CASTLE TOWN - THE DARK WORLD

Oscura

Battle Music: Hunter of the Dark - Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.

The Castle Town Courtyard was eerily silent, save for the soft hum of the gas lamps casting their feeble light over the cobblestone ground. Shadow and Aqua stood side by side, their resolve hardening as they faced Oscura, the dark reflection of Aqua's heart.

Oscura's Keyblade, a sleek and ominous weapon dripping with inky shadows, pulsed with malevolent energy. She smiled darkly, her eyes gleaming with a mixture of malice and anticipation.

"So, you've decided to face me together," Oscura taunted, her voice a haunting echo. "Let's see if you can handle the darkness."

With a swift motion, Oscura lunged forward, her Keyblade slicing through the air with deadly precision. Aqua met the attack head-on, her Master's Defender clashing with Oscura's weapon in a shower of sparks. The impact sent a shockwave through the courtyard, the force of their clash resonating in the silent night.

Shadow darted around them, his speed a blur as he sought openings to strike at Oscura.

"Chaos Spear!" he shouted, launching a barrage of energy projectiles at the dark entity. Oscura twisted her Keyblade, deflecting some of the spears while dodging the others with fluid, almost serpentine movements.

Oscura's dark-infused attacks were relentless, each strike more vicious than the last. She swung her Keyblade with ruthless precision, sending arcs of dark energy slicing through the air. Aqua countered with graceful cartwheeling dodges, her agility allowing her to evade Oscura's attacks by the narrowest of margins.

"Is that all you've got?" Oscura sneered, her frustration mounting as Aqua's evasive maneuvers kept her out of reach.

Shadow reappeared behind Oscura in a flash of red light.

"Chaos Control!" he declared, freezing time momentarily. He delivered a powerful kick to Oscura's back, sending her stumbling forward. As time resumed, Oscura whirled around, her eyes blazing with fury.

"Enough of your tricks!" Oscura hissed, her voice a venomous snarl. She swung her Keyblade in a wide arc, dark energy radiating from the blade.

Shadow vanished just in time, teleporting to a safe distance as the dark wave crashed into the ground where he had stood.

Oscura's annoyance grew with each of Shadow's movements. She lashed out with a series of rapid strikes, her movements a blur of shadow and steel. Shadow matched her speed, using Chaos Control to evade her attacks and counter with his own. Their clash was a dance of light and dark, each movement a testament to their skills and determination.

Aqua joined the fray, her Keyblade weaving intricate patterns as she deflected Oscura's attacks and launched her own. She cartwheeled gracefully, her movements a fluid blend of offense and defense. Oscura mirrored her, their mirrored acrobatics creating a mesmerizing spectacle of light and shadow.

"Thunder!" Aqua cried, summoning a storm of lightning bolts that rained down upon Oscura. The dark entity deflected some of the bolts, but others struck her, eliciting a hiss of pain.

Oscura retaliated with a dark wave of energy, but Shadow teleported in front of Aqua, using Chaos Control to slow the attack's momentum. He countered with a powerful Chaos Spear, the energy projectile piercing through Oscura's defenses and forcing her to stagger back.

"You can't keep this up forever!" Oscura roared, her frustration boiling over. She conjured a massive orb of dark energy and hurled it at her adversaries.

Aqua and Shadow dodged in unison, their movements synchronized. Aqua's cartwheel took her to the left, while Shadow's teleportation moved him to the right. The orb exploded on impact, sending a shockwave through the courtyard and scattering debris.

Shadow reappeared beside Oscura, delivering a swift kick to her midsection. She doubled over, but quickly recovered, her eyes blazing with rage. She swung her Keyblade in a wide arc, aiming to catch Shadow off guard. But he vanished once more, reappearing a few feet away.

"Stop running, coward!" Oscura screamed, her voice cracking with fury.

She launched herself at Shadow, her attacks becoming more erratic and desperate. Each missed strike only fueled her anger, making her movements even more unpredictable.

Shadow smirked, his crimson eyes locking onto Oscura.

"Pathetic," he taunted. "Is that all the darkness has to offer?"

Aqua seized the moment, rushing forward with her Keyblade ready. She clashed with Oscura, their blades sparking with each impact. Aqua's agility allowed her to dodge Oscura's wild swings, her cartwheeling dodges keeping her just out of reach. She countered with precise strikes, each blow chipping away at Oscura's defenses.

Oscura's frustration reached its peak. She let out a primal scream, dark energy erupting from her body in a violent surge. Aqua and Shadow were thrown back by the force, but they quickly regained their footing, their determination unshaken.

"We have to finish this," Aqua said, her voice resolute. She glanced at Shadow, who nodded in agreement.

"Chaos Control!" Shadow shouted, freezing time once more.

The hedgehog and Aqua moved in perfect sync, their combined attacks a blur of light and dark. As time resumed, they struck Oscura with a devastating flurry of blows, their Keyblades glowing with a brilliant light.

Oscura screamed in agony, the dark energy surrounding her shattering like glass. She fell to her knees, her Keyblade clattering to the ground. The shadows that had once empowered her began to dissipate, leaving her vulnerable and weakened.

Aqua stepped forward, her Keyblade still at the ready.

"It's over, Oscura," Aqua said softly. "You don't have to fight anymore. Let go of the darkness and become whole again."

Oscura looked up, her eyes filled with a mixture of rage and sorrow. For a moment, it seemed as though she might listen. But then, with a final, defiant cry, she lunged at Aqua, her hands reaching for the Keyblade Master.

Shadow moved with lightning speed, intercepting Oscura and knocking her to the ground with a perfectly timed jumping roundhouse kick.

"Stay down!" Shadow commanded, his voice stern and unwavering.

Oscura hit the cobblestones hard, a pained gasp escaping her lips. She struggled to rise, but the weight of her own darkness seemed to hold her down. Aqua stepped closer, her Keyblade still glowing with the light of her determination.

"Oscura," Aqua began, her voice gentle but firm. "This isn't who you are. We can fight the darkness together."

Shadow crossed his arms, his crimson eyes locked onto the fallen form of Oscura.

"You poor, lost Heartless," he remarked, his voice cold and steady. "End this misery and return to Aqua. There's no need to keep suffering in the shadows.

Rank: A

Oscura, though visibly weakened, managed to regain her composure with an air of defiance. The dark portal materialized behind her, a gateway to the shadows that beckoned her. Aqua, her gaze filled with a mix of desperation and hope, implored Oscura to reconsider.

"Please, Oscura, we have to become one again. This fractured existence can't go on," Aqua pleaded, extending a hand towards her Heartless counterpart.

Oscura, however, scoffed at the notion. Despite the pain evident in her demeanor, she remained resolute.

"I won't go back to being a part of you," she retorted, her voice carrying a defiant edge. "You can be an empty husk and a Nobody forever. I'm free now, free to roam the darkness."

"What do you mean, Nobody?" Shadow inquired, his crimson eyes fixed on Oscura.

With a cryptic smile, Oscura began to explain, "When a heart is consumed by darkness, a Heartless is born."

"Like you, right?" Shadow asked, his crimson eyes locking onto Oscura with a stern look on his features.

"Yes, Shadow" Oscura replied. "But in its wake, the leftover shell, the body and soul devoid of emotion, becomes a Nobody. They are entities without a heart, wandering in a realm between light and darkness."

"So, Aqua has been living as a Nobody all this time?"

Oscura's smile grew more sinister.

"Exactly. She's been nothing but an empty shell, clinging to faint memories of the light. And now, she thinks she can drag me back into that emptiness."

Aqua winced at the truth of her existence. She was a Nobody, a mere shell of her former self, created when her heart succumbed to the darkness. The realization hung heavily in the air, adding another layer of complexity to their already intricate journey.

As Oscura stepped back towards the dark portal, she cast a final, disdainful look at Aqua, her other half and the empty husk that was once whole.

"You can keep your fading memories, Aqua. I've embraced the darkness within me. Farewell, for now," Oscura declared, disappearing into the shadows as the portal closed behind her.

The courtyard, once again cloaked in an unsettling silence, left Shadow and Aqua standing amidst the remnants of their recent battle. The revelations about Nobodies and the fractured nature of their existence lingered, casting a shadow over their pursuit of answers within the darkened realm.

Shadow, turning his attention to Aqua, sensed the turmoil within her. The blue glow of her eyes reflected the inner conflict, and the weight of her own fragmented memories bore heavily on her shoulders. He approached her with a sense of concern etched on his face.

"Are you okay?" Shadow asked, his voice carrying genuine concern for his companion's well-being.

Aqua took a deep breath, her shoulders trembling slightly as she tried to compose herself.

"I... I don't know," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "Hearing Oscura speak those words, realizing I'm a Nobody... it's like losing myself all over again."

"We need answers," Shadow affirmed, his crimson eyes reflecting a resolute determination. "We've got to press forward. We need to make sure you get your memories back and stop Oscura."

Aqua, glancing at Shadow with gratitude, nodded in agreement.

"Yes, but after that last fight with Oscura, some have slowly returned." Her voice carried a hint of surprise and realization.

"Interesting," Shadow remarked, intrigued by the prospect of memories resurfacing through the intensity of battle. "What do you remember?"

As the question hung in the air, Aqua closed her eyes, allowing the fragments of memory to weave together like the strands of an intricate tapestry. The courtyard faded away, replaced by the ethereal landscape of her recollections.

AQUA'S FLASHBACK

The summit perched high above the world was bathed in the ethereal glow of starlight. Aqua sat with two boys, gazing up at the stars above. Together on the edge, their eyes were fixed on the canvas of the night sky adorned with countless twinkling stars. The air was filled with a quiet anticipation, a serene prelude to the pivotal Mark of Mastery exams awaiting them on the morrow.

Aqua, the solemn and thoughtful Keyblade wielder, broke the tranquil silence with a reminder of the impending challenges.

"Oh yeah, Terra" Aqua announced, looking at the brown-haired warrior next to her with determination. "You and I have our Mark of Mastery exams tomorrow."

Terra, the brown-haired warrior, strong and stoic with a fierce determination in his eyes, glanced at Aqua and nodded. His presence exuded a quiet strength, a reflection of his resolve to protect his friends and become a Keyblade Master.

As she stood up, a gesture that seemed to stir the very magic in the air, Aqua reached into a pocket, retrieving something precious. In her hands were two star-shaped charms, one radiant orange and the other a vibrant green. With a flick of her wrist, she tossed the orange charm to Terra, who caught it effortlessly.

Terra examined the charm with a thoughtful "Ah," while Ventus, the blonde-haired boy, smaller in stature but brimming with youthful energy and an unwavering spirit, marveled at the unexpected gift, exclaiming, "Whoa!"

As Terra and Ventus examined their colorful charms, Aqua began to recount a tale, a story woven with magic and the promise of enduring friendship.

"Somewhere out there, there's this tree with star-shaped fruit... and the fruit represents an unbreakable connection," Aqua explained, her words carrying the weight of a cherished tradition. "So as long as you and your friends carry good luck charms shaped like it, nothing can ever drive you apart. You'll always find your way back to each other. Technically, I think you're supposed to make them with seashells, but I did the best I could with what I had."

"Oh, sometimes you are such a girl," Terra said, teasing Aqua for her sentimental inclinations.

"Hey, what do you mean, 'sometimes'?" Aqua retorted playfully, undeterred by the comment.

"So, this isn't a good luck charm?" Ventus commented, looking at the gleaming green charm in his hand.

"Well, that's yet to be seen," Aqua replied. "But I did work a little magic on it."

"Really, what?" Ventus asked eagerly, his eyes wide with curiosity.

Aqua, with a mischievous glint in her eye, raised her own blue charm, revealing the magical touch she had bestowed upon each one. "

An unbreakable connection," she declared, infusing the moment with a touch of enchantment.

In that ephemeral moment on the summit, the trio of friends, bound by destiny and the shared journey ahead, felt the weight of their connection. The charms in their hands were more than mere trinkets; they were symbols of a bond that transcended time and space. As the stars continued to illuminate the night, the friends shared a quiet moment, knowing that no matter the trials ahead, their unbreakable connection would guide them through the darkness and back to each other.

As the memory faded, the voices of the two warriors echoed through the corridors of time, calling out to Aqua, their connection enduring even in the midst of fractured memories.

"Terra…Ven." Aqua whispered their names, her heart aching with both the joy of remembrance and the sorrow of their absence.

In the haunting silence that enveloped the Castle Town courtyard, Aqua's gaze lingered on the memories that had stirred within her. Shadow, his arms crossed and crimson eyes focused on her, patiently awaited the revelations that danced at the edge of her consciousness.

"I saw... my friends - Terra and Ventus," Aqua finally confessed, her voice carrying the weight of emotions buried beneath the surface.

Shadow, his arms folded, leaned in slightly, his expression one of intense curiosity.

"Tell me more about them. What do you remember?"

Aqua closed her eyes, allowing the memories to wash over her, the images and feelings coming into sharper focus.

"Terra... he was always the strong one. Tall, with dark brown hair and piercing blue eyes. He had a quiet strength about him, a resolve that made him a natural leader. But he also carried a burden, a struggle with the darkness within him. He wanted so much to become a Keyblade Master, to prove himself worthy."

Shadow nodded, his crimson eyes reflecting a mixture of understanding and curiosity.

"And Ventus?"

A soft smile touched Aqua's lips as she thought of the blonde-haired boy.

"Ven... Ventus was like a little brother to us. He had this boundless energy, this bright light that seemed to shine from within him. His hair was a bright blonde, and his eyes were the color of the sky on a clear day. He was smaller in stature but had a heart full of courage. He looked up to Terra and me, and he was always so eager to prove himself. Despite his youth, he had a strong sense of right and wrong."

Shadow listened intently, the pieces of Aqua's past painting a vivid picture in his mind.

"You three were close."

"Yes," Aqua said, her voice tinged with both joy and sorrow. "We trained together, fought together. We were more than friends; we were like family. Terra and I were preparing for the Mark of Mastery exams, a test to become true Keyblade Masters."

"What else do you remember?" Shadow prompted, sensing there was more to Aqua's story.

Aqua took a deep breath, the weight of her memories pressing upon her.

"We sat on a summit the night before our exams, looking at the stars. I gave Terra and Ven good luck charms, star-shaped and enchanted with a bit of magic. I told them about the legend of the star-shaped fruit and how it represented an unbreakable connection. Terra teased me about being sentimental, but I knew it meant a lot to them."

Shadow's gaze softened slightly, "And what happened after that?"

Aqua's eyes clouded with pain, "The exams... they didn't go as planned. I was named a Keyblade Master, but Terra struggled with the darkness within him, and Ventus was pulled into a conflict that none of us were prepared for. I tried to hold everything together, but... we were torn apart."

"I see," Shadow replied.

Aqua nodded as she felt the weight of something in her pocket. The Keyblade Master reached within and pulled out a small, blue, star-shaped trinket. The charm sparkled in the dim light, its azure hue a testament to the magic woven into its very fabric.

"What is that?" Shadow inquired, his curiosity piqued by the mysterious charm.

Aqua, her eyes reflecting a mixture of nostalgia and determination, began to unfold the tale behind the charm.

"It's a good luck charm. I made one for me, Terra, and Ventus. An unbreakable connection," Aqua explained, her words resonating with the magic that had bound the trio of friends across time and worlds.

"Connection?" Shadow asked, looking at Aqua who was deep in thought.

As Aqua held the charm in her hand, the courtyard seemed to transform, becoming a bridge between the present and the memories she held dear. In her mind's eye, she could see the summit, the starlit sky, and the camaraderie that defined those moments.

"Somewhere out there, there's this tree with star-shaped fruit... and the fruit represents an unbreakable connection," Aqua explained further, her voice a gentle whisper that carried the weight of cherished memories. "As long as you and your friends carry good luck charms shaped like it, nothing can ever drive you apart. You'll always find your way back to each other."

Shadow, his crimson eyes reflecting a profound understanding, absorbed the significance of Aqua's words. He contemplated the idea of enduring connections and the resilience that bound people together across the vast expanse of time and space.

"These connections," Shadow mused, his tone carrying a hint of introspection. "We never forget the most important people in our lives. They're the ones who leave a lasting mark, no matter how far apart you may be."

Aqua, touched by the sincerity in Shadow's words, felt a kinship in their shared understanding of the value of meaningful connections.

"Maria was your connection, right?" Aqua inquired, her curiosity prompting a nod from the enigmatic hedgehog.

Shadow nodded in acknowledgment, the weight of his memories evident in the crimson glow of his eyes. Aqua sensed the profound emotions that Shadow carried within, a testament to the enduring impact Maria had on his existence.

"Yes," Shadow replied, his voice carrying a quiet reverence. "Maria was... everything. A friend, a companion, someone who showed me kindness when I knew nothing but darkness. She believed in me, even when I struggled to believe in myself."

Aqua listened intently, recognizing the echoes of her own experiences in Shadow's words. The bond they shared in their pursuit of understanding and connection seemed to transcend the boundaries of their respective worlds.

"What happened to her?" Aqua asked, her voice gentle yet filled with the weight of genuine curiosity. "What happened to Maria?"

Shadow's gaze turned distant, the memories clearly painful but important to share.

"Maria... she was taken from me. We were on the ARK, the space colony where I was created, and the government saw us as a threat. In the chaos, she was shot... right in front of me. Her last wish was for me to give humanity a chance, to help them find happiness."

"It must have been so hard, to carry that pain and still hold onto her wish," Aqua replied sympathetically.

Shadow nodded, his voice resolute yet tinged with sorrow.

"It was. For a long time, I let my anger consume me. I sought revenge, believing it would bring me peace. But it didn't. It was only when I started to honor Maria's wish, to see the good in people and fight for a better future, that I began to heal."

Aqua's eyes softened with empathy.

"You've let go of the past, but it still fuels you, doesn't it? Her memory, her wish... it gives you strength."

Shadow met her gaze, a small, genuine smile playing on his lips.

"Yes. Maria's memory is my guiding light. It's what drives me to keep fighting, to protect those who can't protect themselves. It's why it's my decision to stay here, to help you."

Aqua felt a profound connection to Shadow in that moment, their shared experiences of loss and the strength they drew from their memories creating an unspoken bond.

"Thank you for sharing that with me, Shadow. Your strength and determination inspire me."

Shadow unfolded his arms and looked empathetically toward Aqua, her blue eyes meeting his crimson ones.

"We'll find your friends, Aqua. Terra and Ventus are out there somewhere, and we'll bring them back. Just like we'll bring you back."

Aqua nodded, tears glistening in her eyes but a renewed determination evident in her expression. Overcome with gratitude and emotion, she knelt down to Shadow's level and wrapped her arms around him in a hug.

Shadow stiffened, taken aback by the unexpected embrace. He rarely experienced such gestures of compassion, and his natural instinct was to remain stoic. However, he could sense Aqua's warmth, even as a Nobody. The sincerity of her gesture stirred something within him, a flicker of connection and understanding.

Aqua held the hug for a moment longer, then pulled back, noticing Shadow's discomfort. She laughed softly, the sound lightening the atmosphere.

"Sorry, Shadow. I know you're not used to... mushy stuff."

Shadow cleared his throat, shifting slightly as he regained his composure.

"It's fine," he said, his voice a bit gruffer than usual. "But we have a job to do here."

Aqua stood up, still smiling. Shadow gave her a nod, feeling a strange but welcome sense of camaraderie. They turned their focus back to their mission, the courtyard's eerie silence a stark reminder of the dark forces that awaited them.

"Let's press forward," Aqua suggested, her gaze fixed on the looming Castle of Dreams. "There may be answers waiting for us within those walls, and we can face whatever challenges come our way together."

Shadow inclined his head, a silent agreement resonating between them. As they ventured deeper into the shadowy realm, the unspoken bond between Aqua and Shadow became a guiding light, dispelling the darkness that sought to encroach upon their resolve.
