Chapter 2: First Meeting

The cafeteria doors opened and the new students stalked inside, waiting to grab their food from the cafeteria. Everyone was watching them, and I kind of felt bad for them. In a town this small though, it was extremely likely gossip would follow them being the new arrivals. I questioned why they had moved here this close to the end of the school year. As they took their seat, all the eyes that were watching them curiously left their group and the chatter resumed in the cafeteria. I couldn't help but take one last look at them as everyone was distracted in their own lives.

The five of them were all at the table, seemingly unbothered by the amount of attention they were receiving. They weren't talking and they weren't eating despite their full trays of food. This wasn't holding my immediate attention though, it was their physical attributes that kept me staring; they looked nothing alike.

Of the three boys, one was big and muscular — he could be a professional weightlifter, with dark curly hair. Another was taller but leaner, with honey blond hair but was still muscular, not as much as the other boy. A blonde, I recognised him as one of the Hale twins, his name was Jasper. The last was less lanky and bulky, but had untidy bronze-coloured hair and had more boyish features than the others. They all looked like they could be teachers here rather than students.

The two girls were complete opposites to the boys. The tall one was statute with a beautiful figure that all the girls here would dream of. A figure in which you would see on the cover of a magazine with all the models on the front, a figure in which all the nearby girls would be jealous and damage their own self-esteem. Her hair was golden and had gentle but stunning waves down her back. The short girl was pixie-like, and thin with the addition of small features, her hair was black, a deep black like the night sky, in which it was cropped short pointing in every direction it could reach.

Yet they were so different but yet so alike. All of them had a chalky pale complexion, paler than all of the students here in the town where the sun never shines. They had very dark eyes despite their range in hair tones, and dark shadows underneath that looked like purplish bruises in which they were suffering from a sleepless night. Their faces though, all their features were perfect, straight and angular.

They were devastatingly, and inhumanly beautiful.

It was hard to decide who was the most beautiful, the perfect blond girl or the bronze haired boy. I nudged Katherine gently and with my eyes nodded over to them. She looked back at me before speaking.

"Stop staring Bella, They're going to think we're weird" She stated to me quietly. The bronze haired boy turned to look at me suddenly, as if he heard Katherine speaking. He turned away as quickly as he looked at us, and I turned my eyes down in embarrassment.

"The bronze haired boy's Edward" Mike said quietly next to me, excusing himself from his conversation with Ben. "The blondes are Rosalie and Jasper Hale, and the other three are the Cullens: Edward, Alice and Emmett" he said while looking at them, a small frown on his lips. I turned my head back over to look at them, and noticed the bronze haired boy staring out the window, fiddling with an apple between his hands with a small smile on his lips.

"They're all foster children" Katherine spoke quietly next to me. "And they all live together. Which is weird because they are all together. Emmet and Rosalie, Jasper and Alice" She looked at me gently, but I paid no attention to her, still looking at the bronze haired boy. He turned to look back at me, and held a glance that showed some unmet expectation, as if he was confused and slightly focused.

"Jessica's already asked out Edward" Matthew spoke from the back corner of the table. I turned to look at Jessica with a little giggle escaping my lips.

"Seriously?" Lauren spoke, her voice becoming louder each decibel. Her face turned to Jess so fast I was expecting her head to fall off and hit Jess. "What did he say?" She smiled at Jess, waiting for her response.

"He said he doesn't date" She shrugged her shoulders in her response, obviously a little sour about it. "But I can focus on getting Mike to notice me now" She flipped her hair in response, watching Mike, Matthew, Eric, Ben and Tyler fighting at the end of the table. She giggled watching them and then continued to toy with a piece of her hair in between her fingers.

For the rest of lunch, the group talked and fought and laughed together. I couldn't, however, stop staring at the new arrivals across from the other side of the table. The bell went, and Mike, Angela and I all walked over to Biology II for the next hour. I sat at my own table, by myself realising that if any of the new students were taking this class, the only empty seat was next to me, against the window.

Then the new arrival, Edward Cullen, stalked into the room. A piece of paper in his hands before he handed it to Mr Banner to sign, a small and polite smile gracing his lips. I opened my book preemptively, and started to draw small flowers in the corner as he smoothly walked over to my table and took a seat next to me.

I looked up, ready to introduce myself to be polite but then saw his posture change as he took a seat. He was leaning away from me, on the extreme edge of his seat and averted his face as if he smelt something bad.

I'd noticed his eyes were black — coal black.

I let my hair fall over my right shoulder, which made a dark curtain between us as I turned my attention to Mr Banner. Occasionally as the class drew on, I let myself have a few peeks through the curtain in which I created. The whole class he never relaxed his stiff position on the edge of his chair. Still physically as far away as possible from me as he could be. His hand was clenched into a tight fist on his left leg, his tendons standing out dramatically under his skin, which never relaxed. His long sleeves were pushed up to his elbow which revealed his hard and muscular forearm.

The lesson dragged on as slow as it possibly could have felt. His behaviour stayed the same and as I continued to peek at him, I noticed it looked like he wasn't breathing. Was this his normal behaviour? The last time I looked, he threw me a glare and I instantly regretted it. I tried not to flinch away and shrink under his gaze. If looks could kill ran through my mind as I committed that look to memory.

The bell rang loudly, which caused me to jump in my seat, and Edward Cullen was out of his seat quicker than I could possibly think, and stalked out of the classroom, his back to me. I sat quietly for a second, confused and slightly hurt. What had I done to make him hate me so quickly?

"Bella," Mike said as he approached my desk. "What happened to your new desk partner? It looked like you stabbed him with a pencil?" He laughed at his own statement, but I could sense that he had a sense of seriousness to his tone.

I frowned slightly. "I don't know what happened" I shrugged my shoulders as we continued to walk towards the gym. "I never spoke to him"

"He's weird" Mike said quietly, almost as if it was only meant for his ears. We entered gym and I groaned. This week was volleyball week, my least favourite. I was clumsy enough that nobody wanted me on their team, even if I had known them all my life. I bid my short goodbyes to Mike as I entered the girls locker room and changed into my P.E. clothes.

Finally the bell went, and my personal torture was hell. I remembered while changing in the girls locker room that my father needed me to grab some paperwork and forms from the office before I left from school today. I sighed, grabbing my bag and making my way over, fishing my keys from my pocket while I was walking.

I opened the door, letting the cool air past me and rustling the papers on the desk. The lights blinded me for a moment before I was enveloped in a bubble of warm air. In front of me, Edward Cullen stood at the desk, his paperwork in his hands as he argued quietly in a low attractive voice, with the large, red haired receptionist. I was tempted to walk back out, but decided against it and to face my own fears — although I wouldn't call them fears.

It only took me a second to realise that he was arguing about sixth-hour biology to another time — any other time. I had to try and convince myself that it was in fact not about me, and that it was another reason, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it was. The doors opened again, and a girl stalked in, blowing a bigger breeze of cool air with her as she walked over to the desk, placing a note in a wire basket before leaving. Edward Cullen's back stiffened and he turned slowly to glare at me, his handsome face held his eyes that were filled with hatred that pierced through my soul.

"Nevermind then" He spoke, his voice like velvet "I can see that is not possible, thank you for your help" He handed her the paperwork and then turned on his heel without a look at me, and disappeared out the door. I swallowed slightly and put on a small smile on my face.

"Ah Bella, Katherine already came and picked up the papers for your father" She spoke. I sighed and tried with effort to keep a smile on my face. So much for a waste of time.

"It's okay. Thank you" I replied before darting out of the office and towards the parking lot. I was relieved to find that my siblings were not waiting by the car yet. I got inside and started the car quickly and blasted the heater, staring blankly out the windscreen.

My siblings got inside the car, talking amongst themselves before I pulled the car into drive and drove home.

Author's Note: I'm speed writing these chapters before the motivation slowly slips away from me, but please let me know your honest thoughts below. Your thoughts are highly valued and appreciated. I'm also trying my hardest to keep to the original storyline of the books, such as the car accident, the legends ect. But let me know if you would like me to deviate from these set storylines.

(I'm also going to try and post new chapters every Sunday and Wednesday and I am currently writing chapter 4).
