Hearing Echidna's title, Subaru tensed and his face hardened. But the witch continued to smile benevolently, as if she considered this attitude to be completely normal.

"Please, it hurts to see you look so alarmed by me." She said, feigning resentment. "Despite who I am, I'm still a tender young maiden, you know."

'What kind of a show are you putting up here, Mother? ' Beatrice stared suspiciously at the screen. 'Obviously, you're just playing a role in front of Betty's Subaru. Unless... by transferring his consciousness here, you were able to get into his mind and saw in him the opportunity to achieve your dreams?'

"Sorry, but... There's no way I'm not going to be alarmed when you tell me you're the Witch of Greed the moment we meet."

"I see. That's a fair point."

"What is this place?" asked Subaru. "I was in some dark ruins just a moment ago! When did you move me?!"

"Unfortunately, you're mistaken. You weren't physically moved anywhere. You were merely invited to my tea party."

"Tea party?"

"A witch's tea party."

"Are you going to stand there forever? Why don't you at least sit down before the tea gets cold?"

"Oh, damn it! All right, fine!" He fearlessly walked up to the table, grabbed the cup and drained it in one gulp. Even Echidna looked surprised by this.

"Subaru-kun!" Rem was shocked.

The scariest monster in the history of the world lives in his shadow, and he behaves so relaxed in the presence of another such monster?!

"He's a madman!" Felix slapped his face. "Had his ordeals completely killed his self-preservation instinct?!"

"There is still a difference between bravery and recklessness, Subaru-dono!" Wilhelm shook his head disapprovingly.

Subaru should understand better than most how dangerous and ruthless the witches were. He was suffering from the whims of one of them.

"Apparently, even tea from a witch doesn't scare him after tea from the Ram." Garfiel scurrilously declared, earning a scathing glare from the pink maid.

"Hmm! This dog knows how to entertain with his determination." Priscilla admitted with satisfaction, watching his shenanigans with genuine interest. It is not every day that you get the opportunity to observe the dialog between an ancient witch and a buffoon, devoid of any hints of manners.

"You're awfully brave, gulping down tea served by a witch in one gulp."

"Hah! If you really wanted to kill me, I'd be a pile of ash the very next instant." Subaru stated confidently.

"He's right, you know! I hadn't thought of that," Tivey admitted in surprise.

"That's not an excuse!" Julius said sternly. "Such logic is appropriate when dealing with ordinary people. And here he deals with a Witch. It is impossible to understand what goals she may pursue. Maybe this tea contains a will-suppressing potion or something worse."

"These sessions have shown more than once that Sir Natsuki is the best at thinking on his feet and is able to perfectly assess the situation!" Crusch said with pride in her voice. "Whatever the Witch's intentions are, he didn't have much choice. He's on her territory and has to play by her rules. And with this step, he confused her and took the initiative in the conversation.

"What's this tea, anyway? It's not bad, but it's not good, either." Natsuki asked with surprise, looking at the cup.

"So even a dead witch's tea is better than what Ram makes." Frederica whispered to Petra, and the two girls started to giggle nastily.

"It's something that's produced here. To put it bluntly, it's a body fluid of mine." Echidna calmly declared.

"What the hell did you just make me drink?!" Subaru yelled, violently knocking on the table while Echidna flirtatiously laughed.

"Eeeww!" Petra and the twins were the first to react.

"She got him drunk with her snot!" Mimi was torn between disgust and laughter.

"More like saliva, but it doesn't sound much better." Tivey interjected.

Priscilla, Anastasia and Ram were openly laughing. Felt looked at the sleeping Subaru with pity.

"Barusu has finally faced retribution from the tea gods! I will take it upon myself to remind him regularly about this wonderful tea party!" Very pleased, Ram made sure to engrave in her memory every second of the young man's shame on the screen.

Rem clenched her fists angrily. How dare this witch?! Even Rem wouldn't allow herself to do such things! Unless Subaru-kun asks for it himself…

Julius coughed softly. He didn't even think about laughing at his friend. No way! That would be most inelegant. But Felix allowed himself to laugh heartily.

"So you've paid the price for your recklessness, Subaru-kyun! I can say that you got off easy!"

"Well, we can only be glad that the pal met the Witch of Greed and not Lust. Otherwise this scene would be so much more uncomfortable!" Al remarked through laughter.

"Al-san, you are disgusting! Please don't stop!" Ricardo supported him while cracking up.

"Thank you! You are a wonderful audience!" Obviously referencing someone, the one-armed warrior replied.

Roswaal was surprised to discover that he was experiencing a long-forgotten feeling of burning jealousy. His Teacher got Subaru to drink HER fluids. It was almost like a kiss! The magician had to clench his fists so as not to let emotions show on his face. And secretly hope someday to be in the place of the young man.

"And here you could be actually sincere with your jokes, Mother." Beatrice whispered with a smile.

She knew that when it wasn't about the pursuit of knowledge, her mother could be a nice and sometimes even a caring girl. If only her greed, born of the witch factor, wasn't so overwhelming…

"You truly are a fascinating individual. You're standing right here in front of me as if it's normal."

"Hah! You think you're so pretty that a normal person's eyes would fall out?" Subaru said impudently. "I'll have you know that my eyes are blessed throughout the day by the prettiest girl around! So no matter how many times I look at you, I'm not going to see you as particularly pretty."

"Subaru-u-u!" Completely embarrassed, Emilia pinched the sleeping man on the shoulder. But she couldn't help but smile.

"He knows how to make girls blush. I'll give him that!" Al approved.

"No, most normal people vomit when they stand before me. Funny, right?" Echidna said with a smile.

' Normal people... like me… ' Roswaal thought sadly, remembering that this was exactly what happened to him when he first met Echidna. ' Just a human... that's what you said back then, right, Puck? And Subaru-kun is anything but an ordinary person. A sage candidate... who would have thought… '

"There's nothing funny about that! What is it you want with me?"

"Nothing, really. You came in here of your own accord. If you want to go back, I'll send you back…" Her gaze instantly took on a dangerous and mystique look. "But are you sure that's what you want?"

"Huh?"

"An opportunity to talk to the Witch of Greed is not something that just anyone, other than you, can earn. The only requirement to have a is for both of us to exist. Let's remove everything unnecessary from the picture." The tea table and umbrella disappeared before my eyes.

"Another thing to add in Natsuki-kun's piggy bank of oddities. This young man never fails to surprise with just how easily he tears off the veil of secrecy from the biggest secrets of our world." Lady Hoshin noted.

"Indeed. With how lucky he is in this particular regard, he should have become a researcher. He could visit different countries, search for ancient ruins and artifacts, solve riddles of the distant past! Perhaps one day he will really want to get even to the Watchtower of the Great Sage!" Reinhard began to muse dreamily, secretly cherishing the hope that he would be able to accompany Subaru on some trips.

"Well, suggest this idea to big bro as soon as you have the opportunity. Be greedy!" Said his lady, poking his side for additional effect.

"I remember that while Betty's contractor was learning to wield a whip, he told Betty that all he had to do now was get a wide-brimmed hat and he could go and search for ancient artifacts, in fact!" Beatrice proudly remarked with a satisfied smile. She liked the idea very much and it made her nostalgic.

"Betty would play the role of an indispensable companion, and the pink maid will be a grumpy, useless and constantly squealing damsel."

"Ram never squeals! Kindly stop pulling her into Barusu's perverted fantasies!" Ram noted sternly, crossing her arms in displeasure.

"That said, there will be no objections to the other points?" Felix remarked with a dirty smile.

"All we need is our words. Let me affirm all the desires, the curiosities, the greed, that you seek to satisfy with answers."

Following the table, the earth began to disappear, the sky got covered with cracks, as if it was actually a glass dome. Only the two of them remained, surrounded by boundless space.

"Now, what would you like to ask me?" Echidna's face, when she began her monologue, began to look as frightening as it was charming. Now she really looked like a witch. She stared at Subaru without blinking, continuing her monologue:

"About the Witch of Gluttony, Daphne, who created beasts that defied the will of God to save the world from starvation?"

"About the Witch of Lust, Carmilla, who granted emotions to non-human beings in an attempt to fill the world with love?"

"About the Witch of Wrath, Minerva, who struck people to heal them as she lamented the state of her war-torn world?"

"About the Witch of Sloth, Sekhmet, who drove a dragon past the great waterfall just for a chance to rest?"

"About the Witch of Pride, Typhon, who, out of youthful innocence and cruelty, judged criminals one after another?"

"About the Witch of Greed, Echidna, the embodiment of the thirst for knowledge, who has done things she regrets even in the realm of death, all in pursuit of all types of knowledge?"

"Fascinating! In just a couple of days in this place, I learned more secrets of our world than in recent years!" Julius remarked admiringly, trying to write everything down as quickly as possible.

"I wonder if after completing Subaru's adventures, the Warden will allow us to look at the memories of other great people of the past? How many white spots in the history of our world could be covered!" Reinhard said enthusiastically.

"After we lock the clown behind the bar, we will need to assemble an expedition to the Climaldy forest to explore this Sanctuary and the tomb of the witch. Maybe someone will even be able to establish contact with Echidna. After all, it can become an inexhaustible source of knowledge!" Tivey reasoned with fascination.

Secretly he was dreaming of being the one whom Echidna would invite to her tea party. And even the murderous glare from Ram did not dampen his enthusiasm.

Subaru stared at the witch with fear and fascination, like a rabbit at a python, not daring to look away or even blink. And the expression on Echidna's face, although it did not change, became more frightening with each sentence.

"What a creepy lady!" Mimi pressed her ears to her head in fright, and clung to Ricardo.

Petra did the same with Frederica. The sight of this witch caused young viewers to remember their childhood nightmares. On the screen they saw exactly who was described in scary tales. Even adults and seasoned warriors instinctively prepared for battle.

"Truly a witch." Rem gnashed her teeth, wishing she had been there to shield Subaru from this image.

"Or...The Witch of Envy, who killed all the other witches and used them as sustenance while she made the whole world her enemy— the most detestable of them all?"

After these words, Natsuki began to tremble, recalling the terrible moments when he personally encountered the said witch.

A moment later, the obsession was gone. They were back in the wonderful green meadow. The sky was clear overhead, and Echidna, as if nothing had happened, was sitting at the tea table.

"Oh, darn. It looks like I've frightened you too much. Such is the nature of a witch. It's quite bothersome."

Suddenly, a wave of pain passed through Subaru's body. He clutched at his chest, barely able to stand on his feet.

"Oh, that took less time than I thought. People who are compatible really do adapt quickly." Echidna commented on his condition.

"What's going on with Natsuki-san?!" Otto was scared.

"Did the witch poisoned him with tea after all?!" Julius clenched his fists in anger.

"Mother wouldn't put on such a show just to poison him, in fact! Something happened to the Sloth witch factor inside Subaru, I suppose." Beatrice stopped the outraged cries.

What are you saying?

That tea you drank? I used the Envy Witch Factor on it to strengthen your resistance. Now you and I can talk at leisure." She leaned forward, showing her interest. "So... what would you like to ask me?

"You won't get away with this! What did you do to my body?!"

"Please don't get the wrong idea. I didn't make you drink that tea with the intention of doing anything bad. In fact, I find your existence quite desirable." Echidna smiled sheepishly. "I'm a bit embarrassed, really."

"And why is she so interested in Subaru-kyun?" Felix asked. "She's already dead!"

"She's a witch. And pal came to her with the witch factor inside. Maybe she decided that they are now colleagues?" Al suggested.

' You play the role of a nice maiden wonderfully, Teacher.' Roswaal thought sadly, not missing a single frame with the love of his life. ' Even after all these centuries, I would be happy if you talked to me like that. Even if I knew it was just a game... I wonder when I see you again, will you give me the same smile? At least a fake one?'

"In these past few days, you killed the one who possessed the Sloth Witch Factor, correct? When he died, the Witch Factor chose you as its new dwelling. That's also why you were able to enter this graveyard unharmed."

"Graveyard? Like... a tomb?"

"Yes. This is the Witch's Graveyard, where my soul is held prisoner...The Sanctuary."

"You know where the Sanctuary is?!" Subaru enthusiastically declared, grabbing Echidna by the shoulders and starting to shake her.

The witch was clearly confused by such impudence.

"I don't have the experience to determine whether you're brave or just very brazen…"

"BRAZEN!" The whole cast declared in unison, some with condemnation, some with smiles.

"I was a fool when I hoped that, at least in front of a powerful witch, Natsuki-san would show a bit of politeness and restraint!" Otto sighed heavily, covering his face with his hand.

"Whoever wins the royal election in the end, do not let Subaru-kyun into the palace under any circumstances! He will have to be executed on the first day for insulting royalty!" Felix said, not even trying to hold back a smile.

A series of chuckles confirmed that the surrounding people were in solidarity with this idea.

"I don't understand! For him it's like it doesn't matter. Be it a maid, a great spirit, or a dead witch of sin! It feels like there is no concept of authority and hierarchy in his world at all!" Tivey said.

"On the contrary I would say." Al decided to add his five cents. "He is from Japan, and those guys are very strict in terms of hierarchy and subordination to elders there. I guess pal just has a rebellious spirit."

"It's like just because as a mistress he has a half-witted commoner who is not able to train her dogs in principle! Under my guidance, he would quickly understand his place and start giving his paw and voice only when commanded to. Am I right, Al?"

"Absolutely, princess." Al said obediently, not wanting to become the target of his mistress's annoyance.

"Buddy, you've been completely tamed, I see. Where is your free spirit?!" Ricardo taunted him.

"Yes! The boss and we are the coolest and we don't let ourselves be pushed around!" Mimi vehemently supported him, hugging her brother with one arm.

"Did you just say something there, my dears?" Anastasia said calmly, but very expressively, deliberately turning slowly to her employees.

"No, ma'am!" All three of them said synchronously, standing at attention.

"Go-o-od." The merchant princess said with satisfaction and turned back to the screen.

"Ha! And Crusch-sama doesn't even need to force others to obey her commands!" Felix started his favorite topic. "Everyone around is ready to fulfill her every whim!"

"Ferris, hush!" The duchess ordered him, half jokingly, half seriously. The healer immediately shut up and pressed his head down.

"Don't make fun of me! So can I consider this... rather, the forest with the ruins where I was before… to be the Sanctuary?"

"You're so mean... That's right. Just as you wanted, the Sanctuary is outside the ruins."

"So, what else would you like to as—"

"And if I ask you, you'll let me back out, right?" Subaru cut her off in mid-sentence.

"Huh?" Echidna clearly did not expect this question. "Sure... I can guarantee that. Hey, isn't there anything you want to ask me?"

"Sorry, but I'd rather meet up with Emilia outside than talk to you." Subaru said sternly and started walking away from the witch.

"WHY?! Just why do all the most incredible encounters happen only to this ignoramus who refuses a unique opportunity to look into the secrets of the world?!" Tivey exclaimed angrily.

If he were in the place of this otherworlder, he would bombard Echidna with questions about historical events, about other witches, about the mysteries of magic and many-many other topics! Even the Witch of Greed would surely recognize his thirst for knowledge.

"Even though I find it extremely questionable to wish to communicate with a witch, I share your passion for history." Julius agreed with him.

"Huh? Y-You're kidding, right?! I'm the Witch of Greed! Powerful people from around the world have come to me in search of my knowledge! So, um... relax, okay?!We can just relax and talk! I have knowledge about the truth of this world that nobody—"

"Not interested." He snapped without interest.

"What?!" Echidna screamed in utter disbelief.

"I'll make time to chat over tea with you later, okay?"

The show stopped for the most unexpected reason: Beatrice was laughing at the top of her voice on the lap of the sleeping Natsuki. Such a sincere and bubbly laugh was not heard from her either in this theater or in the whole past year.

"Ah-ha-ha! Only... only one person in the whole world could... ah-ha-ha embarrasses my mother like that! And this person is none other than my contractor, in fact!" Having finished laughing, the great spirit could hardly catch her breath.

"Betty did not expect that in her life she would see such a sincere expression of confusion from her! Betty is even a little offended for her, I suppose. But Betty will forgive her Subaru because he made her laugh so much!"

"Truly, only he is capable of such a thing… to turn his back on the witch of sin. He just left her so unceremoniously and doesn't even think about the possible consequences!" Crusch did not know what she wanted to do more: to ruffle his hair as a sign of pride for his spirit or to slap him on the back for his recklessness.

Roswaal, on his end, also had mixed feelings about this scene. On the one hand, he wanted to grab the arrogant boy by the scruff of the neck and give him a good slap for showing such disrespect to his Teacher. To the one and only Witch of Greed - Echidna! On the other hand, he couldn't help but enjoy how... alive his mentor looked when talking to Subaru. Even if all these emotions were feigned, he couldn't help but be deeply moved by these images.

"The cap'n looks fuckin' awesome right now!"

"What if it's one of the side effects of all the deaths he's been through?" Tivey remarked worriedly "What if the realization of his de facto immortality dulled his sense of self-preservation?"

Mimi wanted to hit her brother with her magic baton out of habit, but thought better of it. Just like the others.

"I don't think so. When he faced the White Whale all alone, his sense of horror was anything but blunted." Otto disputed this thought.

It was painful for him to remember this loop and his shameful behavior in it, but it was much more important for him to maintain the "human" appearance of his brother.

Having given up, Echidna lay down on the table in resignation.

"You'd ask" a dead woman... a witch, at that... to agree to that as if it were the simplest thing?" She muttered resentfully and waved her hand.

Turning back to where she waved, Subaru saw a black gap in space appear in the air.

"I've never had a tea party like this. If you're really going back, I'll just take my compensation first." She declared capriciously. Subaru got goosebumps from those words.

"J-Just so you know, I'm broke beyond compare…"

"Compensation for a witch doesn't mean money."

"You know I'm rather curious. Subaru should be getting a decent salary as a knight. How does he have fun, where does he go, what does he spend his money on? Does he buy flowers for his lady every day?" Reinhard asked curiously.

"There was a time when he regularly brought me flowers, but I asked him to stop." Raising her head and very cutely holding her index finger to her mouth, Emilia began to reminisce. "There were so many of them in my room that the sight of many flowers gradually withering away made me feel sad."

"Typical Natsuki-san with his complete lack of sense of measure." Otto laughed.

"What Subaru-sama definitely lacks is a sense of measure!" Petra said angrily, once again remembering what kind of mechanical monster he had turned her cute snow rabbit into.

"I remember he bought the materials, with which he and Garfiel built a training ground in the woods near the mansion." Frederica recalled.

"I would really like to see what kind of training program Subaru-dono uses." Wilhelm commented.

"He calls it parkour trainin'! And it looks awesome!" Garfiel commented.

"He was following instructions of the headbutler, Clind. He is very talented and versatile, and..." Emilia began to explain, but Frederica interrupted her:

"A pervert!" The maid said with anger.

"He used his own money to buy parts and designed a very unusual wheelchair for Rem, with which he used to take my sister for walks." Ram added.

And no, she had absolutely no feelings of gratitude towards this useless knight for taking care of her dearest sister! Not even a little bit! She just used any excuse to boost Rem's mood. And judging by the way the blue-haired maid's cheeks turned red, her plan was a brilliant success. However, could it be otherwise?

"What I desire from you is a vow." Echidna said, looking as calm and haughty as she had in the first minute of their meeting. There was no trace of the image of the offended girl. "You will tell no one of what has transpired at this tea party. That is my condition."

"And, since you're here, I'll send you away with a souvenir. I will grant you the right to face the trial of the Sanctuary."

"The trial of the Sanctuary?"

"Wait a sec! So the cap'n didn't only have the right to enter the tomb? He was also passin' the Trial?! He neva' talked about it!" Garfiel was surprised by this turn.

Seeing that his words made Emilia look down guiltily, the guy hurried to explain himself:

"Princess, don't think tha' my amazin' self is unhappy tha' ya took down the barrier. It's just that knowin' how cap'n is always worried about ya, he would probably try ta protect ya from having ta take the Trials after the first failed attempt.

"I understand. Maybe you're right, Garf. He probably restrained himself so that I could grow and gain confidence in my abilities. My knight always tries to encourage me to be better than before." Emilia replied, resting her head on Subaru's shoulder.

"You may not understand now, but once you learn where it is, you will realize its worth. What feelings will you have toward me when that happens? The mere thought gives me such beautiful expectations." Having said that, the girl began licking the back of her hand, pretending to be a cat.

"You... really are a witch, aren't you?" Hiding his concern, Subaru said.

"Yes, that's right. I'm a very, very evil magic user." She said in a tone as if she was flirting with him.

Then she lightly poked his forehead with her finger. Despite the apparent lack of impact, the Subaru flew into the rift as if gravity had stopped working. After a few moments, the gap closed, and the Echidna disappeared from sight.

He woke up in the same place where he lost consciousness: in the middle of a dark corridor in the witch's crypt.

"Anyway, I need to get out of here, and back to Emilia-tan and Otto."

When Subaru came out into the sunlight again, he found that the carriage was standing right in front of the tomb. Patrasche looked fine, while Otto was lying unconscious on the ground. And, judging by his appearance, he obviously did not decide to rest of his own free will.

"Otto?!" Subaru exclaimed in fright.

"Like this, Natsuki-san! Will it tear you apart if you ever express such concern about my safety when I CAN hear you?!" Shaking his fists resentfully, the young merchant commented, looking at the sincere worry on his friend's face.

The only response to him was laughter from the audience.

"Look at you, just waltzing out of there! You've got some nerve, outsider!" An unfamiliar rough voice rang out from behind Subaru.

"Oh! And now it's my amazin' self's time ta shine!" Garfiel declared contentedly, settling himself more comfortably in his chair. "It's going ta be fun."

Mimi stopped fidgeting on Ricardo's knee and stared intently at the screen. Ricardo just smiled maliciously. Now he wished he had a notebook, a pen with an inkwell, and glasses like a scholar to look like a stern examiner. The time to start the evaluation of a potential suitor for his beloved Mimi has come.

"Is this like a magmarin laughing when it's full of holes?!"

After these words, Subaru was launched high into the air. The height was enough to break a couple of bones upon the fall. Fortunately, Patrasche reacted in time. Taking off, she turned the carriage around so that the Subaru fell into the driver's soft seat.

The stranger's toothy smile showed that he was impressed by the actions of the earth dragon.

"Ha ha ha! That's a good toss! I wanna do that too! Let's play like that with mini-boss!" Mimi said, laughing.

Garfiel was torn between the desire to feel proud at the recognition of his strength and to yell at the little pipsqueak for offering to use his captain as a ball for games.

"Ram fully supports this idea and is happy to participate in this new way of entertainment!" Ram noted enthusiastically.

"No one will throw around Subaru without my permission!" Emilia said firmly. And after a couple of seconds decided to add: "And I will not grant this permission!"

"Calm down, Emilia-sama. She's not serious." Anastasia said, enjoying the scene.

"No, I'm seriou…" Mimi wanted to object, but Ricardo clamped her mouth in time.

"Ow… Damn it! What the hell?" Subaru grumbled, trying to come to his senses.

Remembering Emilia, he immediately opened the window inside the carriage and noticed that Emilia was lying safely on the sofa. Obviously, Otto took care of her.

Exhaling in relief, he heard the same arrogant voice from behind:

"That was a great reaction!"

Turning around, Subaru finally saw the attacker. He was a stocky and muscular guy with short golden blonde hair, emerald eyes and a mouth full of sharp teeth. There was a large cruciform scar on the bridge of his nose, a blue crystal hanging on his chest. Just like the one that Frederica had given them earlier. The vest he was wearing only slightly covered his bulging torso. He was also wearing bracers and black pants. and no shoes at all.

"That's a nice ground dragon ya got there." He said haughtily.

These words clearly offended Patrasche, as she roared furiously, unharnessed herself and launched a frontal attack.

"Wait, Patrasche!" Subaru tried unsuccessfully to stop her.

The attacker did not even think to dodge, waiting for the earth dragon to make its attack. A huge body rammed into him at full speed, but he did not even flinch.

"Impressive!" Ricardo noted such steadfastness, mentally giving him one point for sturdiness. Mimi nodded with a proud smile, as if it was her achievement.

"You're a real good-lookin' girl, ain't ya?" Garfiel spoke softly to Patrasche.

' And that was a bad move, man! I see you're a fan of flirting left and right! That won't do! '

When it came to the romantic life of his beloved adopted daughter, Ricardo, like any self-respecting father, completely forgot that he himself was a big fan of wagging the tail in front of ladies. That was different!

"I'm not gonna hurt ya! Just take a little nap!" Grabbing the dragon by the neck, the guy effortlessly lifted her off the ground, threw her over himself and dropped her to the ground. As a result, Patrasche remained unconscious on the ground.

"No! Garf, why did you hurt the cutie Patrasche?!" Petra exclaimed in disappointment.

She was very fond of the "best girl". For the first time, Garfiel felt ashamed for his fight with Patrasche. Looking guiltily at the exasperated maid, he tried to justify himself:

"Back then, ta me she was just a random earth dragon, who brought outsiders ta the Sanctuary. If it makes ya feel betta', in a few days she'ill take 'er revenge on my amazin' self!"

"I will be looking forward to this scene!" Petra stuck out her tongue at him indignantly.

"I'll be happy to see our dear Patrasche return the favor, too." Frederica added gloatingly.

"As it usually happens, clever Patrasche made the main contribution in the fight, while Barusu was just showing off in front of Emilia-sama!"

"And ya would know everything' bout it, won't ya? Oh, wait, no! Ya were knocked out by my amazin' self in the woods!"

"Subaru-kun deserves to show off from time to time, Sister. I'm sure that everything that happened that day was part of another amazing plan of his!" Rem habitually stood up to defend her hero.

"Ha!" Ram could only chuckle sarcastically, because the younger sister was absolutely right.

' It's just that I'm afraid to imagine what he had to go through to make his plan .' The eldest sister thought. Of course, she wasn't going to tell Rem that.

"Better thank her for fightin' so hard for ya!" After finishing with Patrasche, the blonde confidently moved towards the Subaru.

"Wait... Wait!" Natsuki tried to reason with him.

"I'm gonna throw ya guys outta this forest half-dead...Just alive enough to swear ya won't tell a soul about this place!" Garfiel declared and then charged.

"You know Frederica, don't you?!" The black-haired guy screamed desperately, closing his eyes. When he felt that the blow did not happen, he opened his eyes.

"Why the hell did I just hear that name from your nasty mouth?" The blond man asked menacingly.

"Why do you think so? Just think about it!"

"Thought about it. Don't know. I'll think after I bash your skull in!" Garfiel stated confidently.

"At least you realize that you are not suited for thinking!" Ram stated peremptorily.

"Mimi always does that too! Hit'em first, then ask questions! And Mimi's doing great!" Mimi announced solemnly.

"Garf-kun has grown so much, but he has not changed his behavior at all. He just started throwing quotes around." Rem noted with a note of cheerful nostalgia.

"As always, Subaru-dono demonstrates an excellent ability to quickly navigate in stressful situations." Wilhelm noted with satisfaction.

He never got tired of watching how this young man, devoid of any unusual abilities, made the most of his surroundings and his knowledge.

"Quit jumping to conclusions without thinking! It's because we know her, too!" Natsuki yelled, trying to prevent the transition from conversation to an exchange of blows.

"Huh?" Garfiel replied uncertainty, but he lowered his fist anyway.

Moving closer, he looked Subaru straight in the eye.

"I'm Garfiel. If you guys know her, ya must've heard that name, right?"

"Y-You're…"

"How the hell did ya know I have anythin' ta do with Frederica?!" Garf demanded, showing the same hair, eyes, and even a toothy mouth as the head maid's.

"Are you being serious right now?" With the expression "you are an imbecile," the young man replied to a blonde.

Half of those present slapped their faces with their palms. The other half just stared at Garfiel with the same expression as Subaru's on the screen.

"Mimi understands everything here! The mini-boss is just a human, so he did not notice that Garf-kun and his sister had the same smell. And Mimi has a gorgeous nose, so she immediately realized that they were siblings."

"What's wron' with tha'?! I haven't seen my sis for many years, who knew that she would grow into such a huge thin'?!" Garf tried to defend himself, but only earned another slap on the back of the head from an angered Otto.

"I'm starting to understand the value of a half-wit in this election. She acts like a magnet for stupidity, gathering around her the most useless, inadequate and empty-headed!" Priscilla quipped, but most decided to ignore her.

They had already learned to sort out when the fire-haired princess was saying something important, and when she was just entertaining herself by playing on the nerves of others.

The scene changed to a carriage moving again.

"I just got beaten up for nothing." Otto reasoned dejectedly, holding the reins. "What am I supposed to do with this anger?"

"You never shut up, do ya, trader? I apologized, didn't I?"

"You call, 'Hey, sorry, numbskull, I kinda jumped the gun,' an apology?!"

"Anyway, if you'd shown me that thing sooner, that woulda done it. Gotta act on a ganglion before ya think about it."

"Gangli... huh?"

"Lookin' at that hair, I'm guessin' that's the famous Emilia-sama?" Garfiel ignored Subaru's question. "The silver-haired half-devil that Roswaal's helpin' out."

"She's a half-elf! Don't you ever call her that again!" An indignant Natsuki shot up.

"Hey, look at that! Guess you can put some energy into yer voice after all!" The blond man was not at all afraid and began to flex his fists defiantly. "Wanna know how it feels ta be a bazomazo bein' flung back an' forth?"

"Garfiel-san, why are you constantly giving out quotes from the history of Kararagi?" Crusch asked, perplexed.

"Huh? Ain't it obvious? Cause they sound cool!" Garf gave an extensive description with unshakable confidence.

"Uh, is there some sort of translation glitch happening between you and me?" Subaru muttered, not understanding what the hooligan was talking about.

"Huh?" The blond man did not understand him.

"It's not surprising. After all, Natsuki-san was not familiar with the history of the Great Hoshin in particular, and with Kararagi in general." Otto explained.

"I don't understand this. If I were in Subaru's shoes, I wouldn't get out of books about the history, customs and geography of a new world I got in!" Reinhard remarked dreamily, slightly disappointed that his friend did not show an active interest in the new things around him.

"Well, the cap'n hasn't had much time for books so fa'. Apart from Ram and Rem, he was the only butler in the 'uge mansion. Dere was a lot of work ta do, not enough time to read. Also he tried ta spend his free time with the princess, Rem, or the kids in the village. And last year he was also busy. Training, learning the knight's stuff, raisin' your little sister, courting the princess, speaking with Rem…

"I'm not a little sister! I am his contracted great spirit, in fact!"

"You have to convince him of that first, Betty-chan!" Emilia teased the girl.

Subaru was distracted from continuing the conversation by Emilia, who began to wake up with difficulty.

"Emilia! I'm so glad you're okay!"

"Subaru?" Emilia muttered, slowly waking up, but when she noticed the guest in the carriage, she immediately jumped up and covered the young man with herself.

"Who are you?! Just so you know, I won't let you lay a finger on Subaru!" She shouted, closing her eyes in the process.

Embarrassed, Natsuki immediately rushed to explain the situation:

"Hang on, Emilia-tan! I appreciate it, but as a guy, I have mixed feelings about this! Really, I'm fine!"

"Aww. This is so romantic, isn't it? The princess selflessly shields her beloved knight from a terrible threat!" Anastasia commented sarcastically, trying not to laugh out loud.

"Obviously, Subaru takes the rule of etiquette which states: 'ladies first' too literally." Julius could not resist a barb at his comrade.

"What's this?! Did Mr. Perfect Knight just made a good joke?! Who are you, and what did you do to Julius?!" Al mixed praise and quips in one sentence. Receiving appreciative chuckles from the younger ones in the audience.

"That's the true essence of Barusu! He acts all "knighty-knight", but at the smallest sign of danger, he hides from Garf behind the skirt of Emilia-sama. Disgusting!" Ram said in her own manner, however, a slight smile on her face showed her real thoughts of this scene.

"I... I just didn't understand the situation and acted on instinct!" Emilia tried to defend herself, not daring to raise her embarrassed face.

"Your intentions are commendable, Emilia-sama. I hope this old man will be allowed to make a small comment. When you want to protect someone from danger, you should keep your eyes open." The sword demon remarked with a smug smirk.

"You too, Wilhelm-san?!" Not believing such unexpected betrayal, red as a crab, Emilia covered her face with her hands.

"Emilia-sama, I did confess to you a long time ago that I was joking when I said that your gaze could turn others to stone." Frederica said, not holding back a satisfied grin, remembering how she loved to make fun of the naive princess.

The hall was filled with friendly laughter.

"I'm not gonna do anything." Garfiel stated in a relaxed manner. "I don't want Ram givin' me hell later."

"Ram?" the half-elf asked in surprise.

"This is Garfiel." Subaru explained to her.

"Garfiel... The one Frederica told us about?"

"Yeah, and he's showing us the way to the Sanctuary now. Ram and the villagers from Arlam are there... right?"

"Don't wanna believe me? That's your call. Ain't no turnin' back now, though. We're already past the barrier."

"It sounded pretty ominous." Anastasia said.

"But tha' the way it was. Anyone who's half human and half anotha' race, 's trapped in the Sanctuary with no way ta leave it alive." Garfiel answered to her casually.

"It sounds terrible! What is this place? A magic prison for demihumans?!" Felix was enraged at this attitude towards beastmen.

"Almost. Howeva', I'm sure they'll show ya everythin' anyway, just ya wait." The blonde explained.

"Then we're in the Sanctuary right now?"

"C'mon, gimme a break. Weren't you asleep 'cause you got close to the barrier?"

"The barrier?"

The screen showed the previous scene with the glowing crystal and Emilia losing her consciousness.

"Come to think of it, when the stone glowed…"

"It was at the exact same moment." Subaru finished for her. "So it was reacting to the barrier, then?"

"But why did only Emilia-tan pass out? I mean, I got transported somewhere, but Otto—"

"You know damn well why the barrier reacted to her and not you two." The blond man interrupted them sternly. "It's not just half-elves that thing reacts to. It works on me and a lot of others, too. That's 'cause…"

"Because you have mixed blood, too?" Emilia guessed.

"So the Sanctuary is a place where demihumans with mixed blood live?" Subaru continued her thought.

"You guessed it! We welcome you, Emilia-sama, and your two escorts, too! Roswaal likes to go around callin' it the Sanctuary, but it ain't the kinda place that deserves such a nice name. Nothin' there but a hodgepodge of halfwits. It's just a dead-end testing ground."

"Why create a barrier that causes demi-humans to lose consciousness when crossing? Isn't the point of the Sanctuary to keep out those inside?" Felt asked, failing to understand the purpose.

"It's not that easy, I suppose. Only Mother and Roswaal called this place a Sanctuary. In reality, this was the laboratory of the Witch of Greed, in fact. And the demi-humans were experimental subjects in it, unable to leave it of their own free will. On the other hand, in this place they did receive protection from the persecution they were subjected to in other places, I suppose."

"It's still disgusting!" Felix clenched his fists in anger. "Taking advantage of the plight of the demi-humans, she drove them into this... prison, for the sake of her experiments?!"

"Ye're catching on fast." Garfiel looked at him gloomily.

"Would you rather prefer those villagers to be exiled and hunted down by fanatics who believe that demi-humans were the source of all evil, I suppose?" Beatrice asked, giving the healer a very expressive look. "You know nothing about what it was like for the non-humans back then, in fact. So don't be so hasty in your judgment."

"But you and Frederica could always leave the Climaldy forest." Emilia pointed out trying to change an uncomfortable subject.

"Yeah, we could. My sis did just tha'. And my amazin' self didn't cause of me stupid childhood fears. And 'm not sure tha' I would have eva' left this dump if the cap'n hadn't come and taught me some sense." The blond man replied with a serious look.

Some of the viewers just nodded understandingly at this. The young ruffians' story reminded them very much of Rem. Garfiel was another soul, once bounded by the chains of his own experiences and fears. Until a brusque black-haired young man burst into his life and turned everything upside down. Breaking these chains along the way, opening up the whole world and winning another valuable ally.

Leaning out of the window, Subaru and Emilia saw a village located right in the forest. Many of the stone buildings were overgrown with greenery and looked very ancient. The villagers, all demihumans, were poorly dressed, but looked healthy, stared intently at the guests, hiding their children behind them. The atmosphere was quite oppressive.

"Um, where should…" Otto asked.

"You're back? It took you long enough." The familiar voice of the stern girl addressed them.

"Ram!" Subaru said happily, leaning out at her voice.

"I haven't a clue which Barusu you are, but I'm disappointed by how long it took you to get here. Ah, but I suppose I was a fool to expect more of you."

"Ram says that she is very glad that we arrived safe and sound." Emilia was pleased to "translate" Ram's words to "common" language.

"If your story is that you "haven't a clue" who I am, stick to it!" Subaru indignantly jumped towards her, but was pointedly ignored.

"Honestly, I can watch bickering of these two for hours! They look like an elderly couple who have lived together for twenty years and now the exchange of quips is the main outlet for them!" Ricardo laughed. Tensing up internally, as he felt a strong murderous intent behind his back.

"I am extremely interested in asking Subaru if he understands how Ram really treats him? Is he just playing along with her or is he taking all her attacks seriously?" Julius asked curiously.

"Either he sees right through her, or Ram is right and Subaru-kyun is really a hopeless masochist, nya." Felix said sarcastically.

At the sight of the half-elf, Ram immediately forgot about the young man and stood at attention.

"Emilia-sama, I welcome you. Roswaal-sama is waiting inside. Allow me to show you the way. Garf, take the ground dragon and carriage somewhere suitable."

"Is that any way to treat me?" Garfiel said with displeasure, after which he smiled contentedly. "That's just how I like it, though."

Mimi just grunted in displeasure and crossed her arms pointedly turning away. But her outrage went unnoticed by everyone except Ricardo and Tivey.

"Yo, cabbie, follow me."

"Are you referring to me?! That's the worst name you've called me yet! Also, I have to be alone with you?!"

"I'll pick up what's left of you." Subaru decided to inspire Otto.

"Why am I being treated so roughly?!"

"What're you talking about? When I was unconscious, Emilia only stayed safe because you were there. I'm grateful."

"O-Oh?" The merchant was clearly pleased. "W-Well, as long as you're appreciative…Right!"

"He's too easy." Subaru muttered.

"You ungrateful pig!" Otto declared angrily, blushing at the laughter of those around him.

"Your naivety is second only to Emilia's. But at least she looks extremely cute at the same time. What's your excuse?" An unsuccessful colleague has turned into a real source of entertainment for the merchant princess.

Otto silently cursed his bad luck. Why was there always some kind of smartass who would readily trample on his already small ego at every opportunity. If not Natsuki-san, then Ram. If not Ram, then lady Anastasia.

Right now, he could only console himself with the fact that he was a completely different person now. He made a lot of useful connections, he now understood people around him much better. So these scenes could be perceived simply as shameful moments of youth.

' I need a drink. ' Otto summed up his inner feelings.

Turning away from the carriage, Subaru looked thoughtfully at Ram.

"What?" The maid asked suspiciously.

"Oh, just... wondering how you were doing."

"You remember what was going on the last time I saw you. I couldn't get in touch with you after that, and to be honest, I was really worried." Subaru replied with uncertainty.

"As you can see, I am as lovely and healthy as ever." Ram replied, full of dignity. "The villagers of Arlam are all safe, too. You can be at ease."

"I see… Yeah, that's... a real relief. A real relief." However, his face did not match the words at all.

"He's trying so desperately to find the right words." Petra said sadly, worried about her hero.

"Telling the family about the tragedy that happened with their member is the hardest part of a commander's job." Ricardo said seriously.

Rem was silent. She had already accepted the fact that for the rest of the sessions, every memory of her would only bring only pain to Subaru. It was her fault, which she should remember about and strive to make up for in the future.

"U-Um, listen…" Natsuki muttered, remembering the scenes when Ram and Rem were together and Rem was now sleeping. Ram looked at him blankly. Subaru hesitated, not finding the strength to say what he wanted.

"Hey, Ram…" Emilia said, drawing attention to herself.

"This really isn't a place to stand around and talk. Would you show us inside?"

"Certainly." Bowing to her lady, Ram went into the house. And Emilia walked up to the Subaru.

"Subaru, are you all right?"

"Yeah."

"I'm sorry for interrupting you, but…"

"No, I get it. I just freaked out a little. For her to not even ask about Rem when all this is going on… I'm pathetic, huh?" He tried to reduce everything to a self-deprecating joke.

"So be it. I will clear Barusu of charges of dirty and inept attempt at sexual harassment. But only for this particular case."

"Is it just my imagination or did I hear a note of disappointment now?" Al asked with a chuckle.

"Not at all, sir knight. It's just that you have been beaten so many times and so hard on your steel pot that now you are suffering from auditory hallucinations." Ram said contemptuously. "Kindly don't point them towards Ram. I'm afraid they can be contagious."

Silently taking his hand, Emilia said:

"It's only natural to be scared. I'll never think that's pathetic. Let's go. We'll fix what happened to Rem, and everything else, too."

"Got it." Subaru cheered up. "No matter what happens, I'll be your meat shield and keep you safe."

The next scene takes place inside the house.

"Ah, Emilia-sama and Subaru-kun. It feels like it's been so very long since I last saw yo-o-ou." Roswaal greeted them in a very unusual way — without the usual clown makeup and covered in bandages.

"I was going to slug you when I saw you again, but now… What the heck happened? What could have hurt you so badly?"

"Well, now, where shall I begin?"

"Hey, before that, just one thing…" Subaru interrupted him. "The alliance with Crusch-san is on. Now are you satisfied with the results you got from abandoning me?"

"Yes, most satisfied. Truly, truly, you were the once-in-a-lifetime windfall I had long waited for."

"Even if Betty didn't know your plans, Roswaal, after such words Betty would be sure that you were up to something nasty, I suppose!" Beatrice shot the clown a venomous look.

"I'm just trying to be as honest as possible with Subaru-ku-u-un." Margrave looked at his old friend with a fake smile.

The other members of Emilia's camp glared at him angrily, but did not comment. He already knew how they felt about him.

"Oh, really?"

Not understanding the reasons for such aggression towards Roswaal, Emilia decided to change the subject:

"Roswaal, what is this place? Since we got here... no, since we made contact with the barrier…I've had this anxious feeling in my chest, and I can't relax. I've heard it called the "Sanctuary," but it doesn't seem like one to me at all. In fact, it feels more like…"

"The Witch's Graveyard?" Roswaal replied with a creepy smile. "Does it seem to make far more sense to call it that?"

"What do you mean?" Emilia asked.

"Exactly what I said, nothing more or less. This is where the Witch of Greed, Echidna, met her end long ago, and in my mind, it is worth calling a "Sanctuary."

"Echidna…" The young man repeated thoughtfully.

"Subaru?" Emilia called out to him. "Are you all right?"

Shaking his head to shake off strange feelings, he forced a smile on his face.

"Yeah, I'm fine." He told her and turned to Roswaal. "And why are you overseeing a place with that kind of backstory?"

"It's quite simple. This land has been overseen by the heads of the Mathers family for generations."

"Ugh!" Beatrice reacted, but didn't say anything else. The others looked at her in surprise, then at Roswaal, but both pretended that nothing had happened.

"Then the Mathers family and the Witch of Greed have—" The girl began.

"Echidna." Roswaal cut her off.

"Huh?"

"Please, when you speak of her, do use her name. The name "Witch of Greed" makes her sound so evil. That's not very nice, is it?" He explained patiently.

"Why is it so important to you that people refer to the Witch of Greed by name?" Julius asked the clown suspiciously.

And how will you react, Sir knight, if your mistress is called a "gre-e-edy merchant" in front of you? This definition does not contradict reality, but it is unlikely that you will take it favorably, ri-i-ight? The Mathers family owes everything they have to Echidna and her prote-e-ection. So, demanding some amount of respect from others when discussing her is the least I can do-o-o."

"This definition does not apply to my lady at all!" The best knight reacted harshly. "And I kindly ask you not to use such words in relation to her anymore. Otherwise, I will take action."

"Now you understand what I me-e-eant." Roswaal smiled smugly at Juli.

"Um, then... The Mathers family and Echidna have been acquainted for a long time, and that's why they've always overseen this place?"

"Yes, though to say we "oversee" it is a bit of an exaggeration. Echidna's barrier prevents entry by outsiders who fail to follow the forest's proper procedure. In addition, the barrier has certain effects on those whose blood meets certain conditions."

"Did you not experience this yourself, Emilia-sama?"

"And how did you end up in such a sorry state?" Subaru asked him. Roswaal just sighed, but did not answer.

"Did you not find it at all strange, Emilia-sama?" Ram turned to Emilia.

"Huh?"

"That all the people who fled to the Sanctuary, as well as Roswaal-samaand myself, stayed here and didn't return to the mansion?"

"Well…"

"I mean, you stayed here because you're hurt, right? Subaru addressed his question to Roswaal.

"We are all being held under house arrest here in the Sanctuary."

"Huh?!" Emilia and Subaru exclaimed.

"Myself, Ram, and the people of Arlam…"

Oi! Tha' a bunch of lies! He crippled 'himself ta spin his clown intrigues! And he ordered us ta pretend ta be villains!" Garfiel said with contempt.

"Did margrave order you to pretend that you are holding the villagers hostage?" Reinhard was surprised.

"And ya think it's a joy for us to hunt for extra meat?! To keep guards at the town hall and keep an eye on every stranger?! Life in the Sanctuary neva' was sweet as it is without tha' shit, but at least it was calm. And den he shows up, with a caravan of scared people! He got into the Witch's tomb, though he knew tha'' he was not allowed to enter. Well, he got hit hard when he was refused the Trial. Then he calls my amasin' self and an old hag, and says tha' soon the half-elf princess will appear here, she will have ta free the Sanctuary and tha' we must behave as he orders. F'ckn'g clown…

"Oh, and you two as well, from the moment you entered here."

"The hell? You guys are still flappin' your gums in here?" The door opened and Garfiel appeared.

"House arrest... Then there are Roswaal's injuries…" Emilia began to guess fearfully.

"Nope. He got hurt 'cause he was rejected by the trial."

"Trial? What does that mean?"

"You've seen what happens when you come in contact with the barrier, right?" The blond man declared confidently. "Mixed-bloods who go through that and still come in here are never allowed to leave."

"Does that mean Emilia, too?" Subaru guessed.

"The barrier doesn't mean squat to most people. Doesn't that seem a little unfair, Emilia-sama?"

"The only way to break the barrier is to go through the graveyard's trial, but if anyone who isn't a mixed-blood tries it… All the villagers are rounded up in one place. So long as they don't act up, we won't hurt 'em. They even get three meals and a nap every day!"

Changing his insolent smile to a stern expression, Garfiel switched to a menacing tone:

"This is our demand. Break the barrier surrounding this Sanctuary. The only one allowed to undergo the trial to do that is you. If you can't break it, we won't let any of the villagers leave. Of course, you can't leave here yourself, either!"

"So both your injuries and keeping the inhabitants of your domain hostage was just a game? Why would you invent such schemes, margrave?!" Crusch asked sternly, glancing at the clown.

As well as most of those present in the theater. However, he did not deign to look at them, continuing to stare at the screen emotionlessly.

"The Sanctuary Trial is by no means easy to pa-a-ass. If it was otherwise, its people would have been free long ago. And I needed to motivate Emilia-sama pro-o-operly. She would never have abandoned the villagers and would have made every effort to free them as soon as po-o-ossible.

"But that was just the preparation for your real plan, wasn't it, clown?!" Priscilla continued the interrogation. "I know people like you. Vile snakes who always have an extra layer in every intrigue!"

"I am extremely flattered by your appreciation of my abilities, baroness. But as I have already reported, my actions, whatever they were, had the purpose of helping my candidate to ascend to the throne of Lugunica, to help me achieve my dream" Roswaal grinned, but still dodged the question.

The scene changed to an old stone church building.

There were armed guards from local residents outside and inside. Inside, huddled together, were the frightened villagers of Arlam. The doors of the church opened, revealing a young black-haired youth.

"Subaru-sama! Thank goodness you're safe!" He was greeted by delighted residents.

"I'm glad you're all okay."

"Are the others all right? Is the lord recovering from his injuries? We heard he got hurt trying to help us. We're truly relieved!"

"Okay, everyone, listen up. As you know, we got rid of the bad guy who attacked the village." Natsuki addressed everyone. This message inspired the residents.

"The other group that evacuated is back at the village, waiting for all of you to come home."

These words reminded them of their predicament. Which the young man immediately noticed.

"I guess you've all been informed that it's not easy to get out of here. But don't worry! We've got someone who's going to undergo the trial to set you all free!"

"You mean…You're going to do it?"

"Seems like he still hasn't realized just how much respect he gained among the villagers. If only he wishes, they will bring him the lifelong place of a village head on a platter!" Otto mused, recalling his conversations with the inhabitants of Arlam.

"That's right! He became a hero not only for me, but for all of us!" Petra cheerfully confirmed his words. "To such an extent that they began to accept without any doubt all the rumors about him that reached our village. For example, that he was the one who cut off the head of a White Whale with one blow. Or that he literally rescued Crusch-sama from his mouth and then carried her like a princess on his earth dragon."

"Carried me like a princess? I haven't heard such rumors yet. I'm not some damsel in distress to be carried in someone's arms!" Crusch proudly declared.

While fanning herself to keep from blushing slightly at the mental image where Subaru, riding Patrasche, holds her in his arms, heading towards the Karsten mansion, and the setting sun looks at their backs.

Perhaps…if it was Sir Natsuki… she would not refuse such a demonstration of weakness...

Felix, who noticed her blush, thought about teasing his lady about it, but a hand on his shoulder stopped him.

"I'm sure you don't want to reap the consequences of such a rash move." The old warrior whispered so that the lady wouldn't hear them.

Felix thought about it for a second and agreed. If Old Man Will's instincts told him to keep quiet, then one would be wise to listen very carefully.

"No, if I could do it, I'd be more than happy to, but…" With these words, he stepped aside to make way. Emilia entered the hall silently with a determined face.

"I think you all know who this is. It's Emilia, the royal selection candidate. She'll be undergoing the trial."

"What?.." People's faces showed a sense of doubt.

"I-I'm sorry you had to wait so long. In the place of your domain lord, Roswaal L. Mathers, I will undergo the trial. I would appreciate your support!" She said loudly, bowing to the villagers. Her face was covered by her long hair, but her trembling hands betrayed great excitement.

"Let me ask you just one thing." An elderly woman came forward.

"Chief…"

"Why do this?" she asked. "You bowed your head to us the last time you saw us, too, but we were the ones who turned you away. If it's because you want us to back you in the royal selection, that's just fine, so long as you come out and say so. But if you have some other reason, we would like to know… that you are not a witch who is beyond our comprehension."

"Why are the villagers so cold to her?! After all, the lady has already shown them that she is good!" Mimi sounded disappointed.

"Hatred of the Witch of Envy and her image is too deeply rooted in all parts of the world. It doesn't matter whether they are high-born nobles or simple peasants." Frederica explained with sadness in her voice. "In Lugunica, being a half-elf is already like a stigma, and with silver hair her life could easily be in constant danger. Alas, Emilia-sama has to put in many times more effort to achieve the same result and trust that other candidates have."

"Moreover, unlike the previous failed attempt, where Emilia-sama personally joined the battle and killed one of Petelgeuse's fingers, in reality Subaru did everything without her help. He even persuaded the children to keep her close so that she would not go to fight with the cultists herself. That's why the residents believe in him first of all, and not in the princess." Tivey explained.

"You always treat me like a doll, Subaru!" Emilia quietly said with resentment in her voice, pinching the sleeping youth. "Although, I guess I don't have the right to be offended about it. I really wasn't much help back then."

Emilia looked at Subaru for support. He nodded approvingly at her.

"I don't have the confidence to give you a respectable answer right now."

"I don't have any strong, convincing words that would satisfy all of you."

"But... Though it wasn't for very long, I spent a few days with your families, the ones who aren't here now. And it made me realize...that families should be together."

She unconsciously touched the green crystal on her chest, remembering that she, too, was now separated from her relatives.

"I want to return all of you to your families. I didn't promise them that I'd do so...But I promised myself. That's my only reason. I wasn't really thinking about earning your support or anything. But if possible, I'd like to… um...be friends with you all. That's what I want."

"Emilia-sama…" The elder addressed her.

"Y-Yes?"

"I realize this will sound like we only care about what benefits us, but...I pray you will accept our friendship." With these words, the elder, followed by the rest of the residents bowed their heads in front of Emilia.

"P-Please, I should ask the same! I know I'm not worthy, but please accept my friendship!" Emilia rattled excitedly and bowed again.

"What a wonderful demonstration of your own insignificance! Is that how you're going to rule the state, half-devil? Bowing down to any rabble, begging them for a bit of trust?"

"Fuck you, you selfish wench!" Felt exploded, jumping up from her seat and giving a scorching gaze on Priscilla. "The big sis presented herself perfectly well! She can find a common language with anyone, understand their problems and needs, get into the heart of the situation! She is a hundred times more suited to rule the country than the narcissistic who…"

"Fell-sama!" Reinhard interrupted her worriedly.

"Horrible skank who so turned on her noble origin!" The young princess finished, softening the wording.

"Just for the record, the princess has taken charge of a decaying, poor province on the border with Vollachia. The inhabitants of which the local lord saw exclusively as a source of money for himself." Al slowly got up from his seat and began to speak in a calm voice.

However, his tone was so icy that Reinhard instinctively got up and prepared to become a shield for his lady, and Felt unknowingly took a step back.

"And now it is one of the most rapidly developing regions, whose economy, just as the standard of living of its population, is growing at a tremendous pace. So I HUMBLY ask you not to make sudden and extremely erroneous conclusions about my lady's ability to govern the state!"

Felt did not want to stop there, but Reinhardt's hand on his shoulder firmly hinted that it was not worth prolonging the conflict. Grimacing towards the fire-haired lady, she sat down in her seat. Seeing that no one else was planning to argue with him, Al also calmly sat down.

"Aldebaran?" Priscilla called him, still glaring at the young competitor.

"Yes, Princess?" The one-armed warrior immediately tensed upon hearing his full name.

"You got up and started barking without my permission." She said calmly but threateningly.

"Uh... sorry, Princess. I just felt it necessary to protect your…"

"Don't try to justify yourself. Your sycophancy, brusqueness, and your loyalty are no different from a dog's. And dogs that bark without the permission of the owner are usually punished."

"Ugh…"

"But I liked the way you made that sewer rat tremble with fear." She added with an evil grin. "Therefore, we will limit ourselves to the fact that you will bring me more wine."

"...Yes, Princess, in an instant!" Not believing his luck, Al hurried out of his mistress's kill zone to carry out her order.

"I'm not worthy"? Who says that in this day and age?" Gave Subaru his catchphrase regarding the half-elf.

After leaving the building, he heard Ram's voice:

"Emilia-sama…seems to have changed a bit. Is it because of something you said to her?"

"It's the result of her thinking things through on her own." He replied warmly. "You shouldn't assume all her decisions come from someone else."

"You're right. I was in the wrong this time." Ram said guiltily.

"I have to apologize to you again, Emilia-sama. My opinion towards you was extremely unfair back then." The pink maid bowed guiltily.

"It's all right, Ram. We have long since left that period behind. And, to be fair, I didn't deserve much of your respect until Subaru cussed me properly and I found the strength to pass the Trials.

"Who even says "cussed " nowadays?" Otto chuckled, but unexpectedly he came across Emilia's serious gaze.

"Otto, only Subaru has the right to tease me like that." She warned.

"I understood you, madam, I'm sorry!" The merchant pressed his head into his shoulders.

"I still can't believe that Natsuki-kyun dared to scold you!" Felix said, covering his face with his palm.

"You don't know half of it! I've never been insulted so heavily in my life!" The girl recalled with a laugh. "But the thing is, in the end, that helped me gain the courage to believe in his words that he loves me."

"And this is the man we should consider our fellow knight!" The healer commented incredulously.

"Being a knight means not only protecting and serving your liege, but also being a reliable support and adviser to him in all his deeds," William disagreed with him. "And it happens that in some cases good advice should be conveyed in the form of harsh criticism. With the respect to the rules of decency, of course."

"I do not know what scares me more. The fact that Subaru will have to go through a whole series of painful punishments from Captain Marcus? Or that he, with his reckless charisma and exploits, will change the appearance of the Lugunica knighthood himself?" Julius said thoughtfully.

Felt, hearing these words, smiled maliciously:

"You know, this is a good idea! Not only the whole government system needs to be broken to bits, but also the knights need to be thoroughly shaken! They are too used to a relaxed and lazy life, patrolling noble districts and covering the fat asses of high-society bonzes!"

"Felt-sama, please. The royal knights have been honorably fulfilling their duty to the kingdom for centuries!" Reinhard desperately tried to calm his lady's revolutionary impulses.

"Oh, really?! Have you seen a lot of Lugunican knights actively fighting evil and injustice during the viewings?! I've barely seen any knight patrolling the slums of the capital in my years. And yes, you don't count!"

"Julius and Subaru defeated the Archbishop of Sloth. And Felix saved many lives with his magic in the battle with the White Whale." Reinhard continued to defend the image of his comrades and friends.

"Although both are considered knights of the kingdom, they participated in these events at the behest of their camp leaders! If the big bro had not created a temporary alliance with Anastasia, would Julius have participated in the hunt for the cult? I doubt it! And how the knights of the kingdom strive to fulfill their duty, we were shown in the loop, where Rem came to them with a warning about the Cult. She even used the name of this clown! A fucking court magician! And what was the result?!"

Reinhard could only look away guiltily. Yes, the reports about the activities of the cult indeed came regularly and most of them were empty gossip. But, nevertheless, this did not mean that they could be ignored. Especially when such information was transmitted by an authorized representative of the margrave. The sponsor of the candidate for the throne no less. He had nothing to refute his mistress' argument.

"So if there should be knights in Lugunica at all they should be just like big bro! They may not know etiquette and have no manners, but when even an ordinary person turns to them with a call for help, they will drop everything and run to help. Because that's exactly what big bro would do in their place! Moreover, he will not even wait, but he will take initiative to look for ways to root out all evil in advance!"

Neither Reinhard nor the other knights found any arguments to object to the performance of the young princess. It was impossible not to admit that Subaru, although he violated one or another point of the knight's codex with almost every step, was incredibly active when it came to helping others. Even to complete strangers. Sometimes even to hostile people. Actually, that's how he got into Emilia's camp, became an important friend for Felt, a hero for the residents of Arlam and more. Maybe they really should have learned something from him?

The next scene took place in the evening in front of the tomb of the Witch of Greed. Emilia was standing at the foot of the stairs, finishing a conversation with the local spirits.

"Did you get enough support from the lesser spirits?" Subaru asked her.

"Yeah. Everything's fine. Still, I think I'd like one last cheer."

"Can I do it?" Natsuki asked enthusiastically.

"I want you to. Please."

"You can do it! Don't give up! EMC! Emilia-tan, major challenger!" He shouted, making faces and assuming stupid poses.

"I would burn to ashes from shame if I were "inspired" in public in such a way before an important task!" Crusch said with a laugh. "But I can't help but admit that it's kind of cute in a way. At least it feels sincere."

"That's the whole point of Natsuki-san." Otto said with satisfaction. "Ridiculous, brusque, loud, but absolutely sincere in his desire to help and to support."

"What a disgusting buffoon! If he had tried to support me like that, I would have cut off his head right on the spot!" Priscilla snapped, earning a few angry looks that she ignored.

"Don't ya worry, the capt'n will neva' say a kind word in yer direction!" Garf snapped at her.

"Hush, you flea-bitten barbarian!"

And Al, who was sitting next to her, was thinking. He knew from his own experience that the princess's words rarely diverged from her actions. But something in her tone told him that she wasn't being completely sincere this time. She was very good at reading people, and even better at understanding their intentions.

Therefore, she highly appreciated those who were honest in what they said and did. Maybe that's why his pal was so interesting to the princess when they first met?

For all the absurdity, his words and actions towards her were completely sincere. Whereas when he came to her seeking support against the cult , hunted and scared, there was no trace of this sincerity in him. Desperately seeking help to save his loved ones, unable to tell the truth about how he found out about the cultists' plans, he shut himself down and acted pretty disingenuous. Even was ready to throw away his own pride. And the princess hated this kind of behavior the most.

"Thank you."

After that, Emilia headed for the entrance to the tomb, which began to glow as she approached.

"That means she's been approved as a qualified challenger in the Trial." Garfiel explained this phenomenon.

"I'm going now." The girl said confidently.

"I get that it sucks being trapped here. But why didn't you do this yourself?"

"If I could, I would, damn it." The blond man muttered softly.

To their surprise, the glow of the tomb suddenly dried up.

"H-Hey, is she gonna be okay?" Subaru asked.

"The light's not supposed to go out as long as the trial's going on…"

"Big sis! What happened to you there?!" Felt was worried.

"Nothing that scarry Felt-chan... I just failed my Trial." Emilia replied guiltily, lowering her head.

"You shouldn't worry so much, Emilia-sama. The Trial is clearly not an easy one. For hundreds of years, no one has managed to overcome it. Moreover, in the end you succeeded anyway." It was a rare case when Ram addressed someone with words of sincere support.

"Emilia!" Natsuki rushed into the tomb.

"Barusu!" Ram tried to stop him worriedly.

To everyone's even greater surprise, the building began to glow again as the young man approached.

"Why…" Ram said in disbelief.

"I don't understand, but if I can get in there, that's good enough for me! Just stay there! I'll yell if I need you!" The young man shouted at them without stopping.

"My amazon' self was really blown away by tha' at the time. In all history, dere has neva' been a case where a pure-blooded person was allowed to take the Trial. And now it turns out tha' it was all part of a plan of a dead witch who had some ideas for the cap'n."

"It must have looked very suspicious." Otto noted with concern, remembering what Subaru had told him that very night.

"It sure did! When such shi' happens, ya'll begin to suspect the trick s of a witch!" Garfiel agreed with him, tensely clenching his fists.

' Especially if the person who came out reeks of the witch's miasma. Damn it, I hope I hadn't done something stupid. '

He ran along the glowing corridor until he saw an open door ahead. Behind her, he found Emilia lying unconscious.

"Emilia!"

But before he could reach her, his mind went blank, and a voice suspiciously similar to his own sounded in his head:

' First, you need to face your own past. '

After that, consciousness left the young man.

He woke up in bed, in a small room filled with furniture and personal belongings. There were various books on the shelves with inscriptions in an unknown language, artfully executed little statuettes of girls in unusual outfits nearby. Their poses made it seem that they were alive and frozen at the moment of performing a complex dance movement.

"What? Where is he?" Crusch asked, perplexed.

"Have you seen these little statues? I have never seen anything similar in terms of execution and detail! You could get rich by selling these!" Anastasia said with greed in her eyes.

"He's started his theTrial." Emilia said. "The first part forces you to face experiences in your own past... which is..." Her face blossomed with a guess.

"We're seeing Betty's Subaru's house... a house in his homeworld, I suppose!" Beatrice finished for her, staring at the screen with a mesmerized look.

The audience was filled with an atmosphere of anticipation of something incredible.

"AWEEE-SOME!" Garfiel shouted joyfully. "They'll show us the cap'n's world!"

"I wonder how much we will see in total?! Will they show us more of those amazing self-moving carts? Or the metias that are used in Natsuki-san's world? What if we can reproduce some concepts here?!" Otto muttered excitedly.

"Honestly, this opportunity was worth all the inconveniences associated with staying in this place!" Reinhard said excitedly.

The knight among the knights was almost jumping up and down in anticipation. For him, who had been unable to leave the territory of Lugunica since childhood, even books about other countries were a real treasure. And here he will see pictures of a real other world! Moreover, the world from which his dearest friend came!

"If you can be more greedy than you are now, you will not only look, but you will also be able to ask big bro for details!" Felt encouraged him, barely able to contain her delight.

"Julius?" Anastasia turned to her knight with excitement in her voice.

"My lady?"

"We need paper. Lots of paper! And bring me the writing materials. You will take notes of everything you see, and I will make sketches. It's going to be great! I'm literally trembling!" There was such a thirst for knowledge in the eyes of the merchant princess that Echidna herself would have nodded respectfully.

"By all means, my lady." Julius bowed elegantly and hurried to his room. Fortunately, he had requested everything he needed from the Warden a long time ago.

"Julius! Julius, take one for me too!" Tivey had lost all the flair of seriousness and now, more than ever, he looked just like his little sister, excitedly waving his tail.

And Mimi, in turn, was jumping on her chair, shouting: 'We're gonna see Subaru's world! We're gonna see Subaru's world'.

"When Subaru-sama wakes up, I won't leave him alone until I know everything about his world! All the other kids in Arlam will turn black with envy when I tell them what I saw with my own eyes!" Petra murmured enthusiastically.

"To see another world... and so different from ours. Who would have thought that in my old age I would learn so many new and amazing things. Subaru-dono, you spoil the old man too much with miracles. First you gave peace to my soul, now you open a window to new worlds." Wilhelm knew that he would hardly ever be able to pay back his debt to the dark-haired young man for everything he had done, but he would definitely strive for it.

"I am extremely curious to see Sir Natsuki's parents. They must be noble people to have raised such a wonderful son!" Lady Crusch thought aloud.

"Or just as brusque, and he just follows their example. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, as you know..." Felix remarked cheerfully.

"I would also love to see Subaru-kun's parents! Wish I could see them personally and thank them for their son!" Rem said.

"Those poor people! We barely survived one year with Barusu, but they had to endure him for seventeen years! Definitely, their level of patience is immense!" Ram masterfully disguised her respect for the parents of the knight-butler with barbs.

"Looks like someone's going to lose her monopoly on knowledge about the Subaru's world soon, hah, Beako?" Emilia remarked with a sly smile, looking at the spirit girl.

Beatrise's face instantly changed, it began to express fear and disappointment that her honorary title would be taken away from her. But, quickly gathering her thoughts, she put on an important air again:

"Hmpf! You will, at best, see pictures, and images, I suppose! And Subaru told his Betty everything in detail, conveyed the sensations of life in his world, in fact! We are not the same!" At that moment, Betty regretted that neckties did not suit her image thus depriving her of the opportunity to straighten it.

"Well, finally, I will be shown something worthy of my eyes again. I must admit, the prospect of seeing another world seems attractive to me!" the иaroness fanned herself enthusiastically.

"I would like to see if the image of the cities of the Earth has changed much since I was transported." Al expressed his interest.

' What an interesting turn of events. I would like to ask you how you felt when you learned about the origin of Natsuki Subaru, Teacher? Have you developed a thirst to get into his world by any means? Or have you been scared off by a world devoid of magic? Will I hear your thoughts on this, I wonder?' Roswaal mused, looking forward to seeing the world of Subaru.

A few minutes later, when everyone returned to their seats, the screen came to life again.

The quiet scene was interrupted by a loud male voice:

"Good morning, son of mine!" The next moment, a muscular middle-aged man with short black hair, naked, well-trained torso and in orange sweatpants fell on the Subaru.

"The laws of Hammurabi!" Natsuki squeezed out, pinned down by his father.

"Hey, c'mon! What? What? What's wrong? You look as if you just saw your own dad naked first thing in the morning!" The newcomer reported, radiating self-confidence.

[Title card: The Long Awaited Reunion]

"Wow... is that his... dad?" Emilia asked in confusion, not expecting such a turn.

"What did I say about the apple from the apple tree, nya?" Felix declared with satisfaction, not even trying to hold back his chuckles.

"Well, I can already see some hereditary traits in Subaru." Julius commented with a smile.

"Subaru-kun clearly got his active persona and charisma from his father." Rem said with a satisfied smile, noticing similar character traits.

"Hah! So that's who Barusu is imagining when he looks so lovingly at his pathetic muscles in the mirror. His attempts may be insignificant, but at least he chose a decent example for himself." Ram said approvingly, examining the half-dressed man on the screen.

"Subaru-kun has built up muscles?!" Rem asked with barely restrained admiration.

"Your generosity is second to none, dear sister, if you can call this parody of abs muscles." Ram replied condescendingly, acknowledging the young knight's successes in her own way.

' Abs ?' Rem thought in surprise at her sister's hint, looking at the sleeping Subaru's stomach.

Trying not to attract the attention of Beatrice, who was sitting on him, she carefully reached out her hand to his stomach. To her surprise, she actually felt the hardness of well-trained abs. And she really liked what she fe... scratch that... She LOVED it! The girl involuntarily blushed as her heart began to beat faster.

' Subaru-kun, you are a shameless person! Now, how am I supposed to sleep normally, and not lie in bed imagining what your muscles feel like to touch ?!' The maid thought embarrassed and aroused.

"Actually a break was planned after this episode, but judging by your faces, you do not require rest right now." The voice of the Warden addressed everyone.

"Nah, we want to see the cap'n's world! Come on, turn on the next one!" Garfiel expressed a common thought for the whole hall.

The answer to his demand came in the form of the screen coming to life to begin the demonstration of the next episode.
