Prompt #22 Disturbing

"Maybe there's justice in the world after all"

Donald Gennaro sat in the passenger side of the gas-powered jeep, watching the trees blowing in the wind. He remained silent as Robert Muldoon continued driving down the service road in the thick jungles of Jurassic Park. They were searching for the tyrannosaur (or "Rexy" as Muldoon liked to call her). He thought it would be better if they finally located Alan Grant, and Hammond's grandchildren, Tim and Lex, so that they could bring them back safely to the visitor center. Gennaro couldn't concentrate on the tyrannosaur though. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get that horrific image out of his mind.

Just moments ago, they had been outside of the dilophosaur paddock. They had found the rocket launcher that Muldoon needed to take down the tyrannosaur. That wasn't all they found, and now Gennaro swallowed nervously. He would forever be traumatized by the gruesome sight of Dennis Nedry's destroyed corpse…

Nedry's face had been red and bloated. Spit from the dilophosaur showed up as reddened irritation on Nedry's corneas. Gennaro heard Muldoon's voice echoing in his mind, when he remembered how Muldoon described a terrifying visual of Nedry's death. Nedry had been blinded by a dilophosaur and ripped down the middle... Now his dead body lay there, decomposing in the humidity of the jungle. One leg was chewed through. His intestines were twisted and torn up. Flies buzzed around Nedry's body. His carcass was exposed to any living creature that wanted to feed. Gennaro shuddered when the grotesque image flashed through his brain: a compy hopping on Nedry's gaping mouth to nibble on his nose. Gennaro thought he had seen teeth marks on the sides of Nedry's head and dried blood. Did the dinosaur use its jaws to pick up Nedry by his head? Did it crush Nedry's skull, effectively performing the coup de grâce? Then there was the stomach-churning smell of the dilophosaur's spit. Muldoon compared it to smelling like dried vomit. Everything combined with the unmistakable odor of rot and decay…

"That's the stuff of nightmares," Gennaro mumbled.

He didn't know if Muldoon had heard him.

"What is?" Muldoon asked, keeping his eyes on the road.

Gennaro didn't speak until Muldoon pulled over to the side of the road.

"What're you going on about?"

Gennaro thought Muldoon sounded annoyed but forced himself to answer the question. "He was eviscerated…that's disturbing…"

He remembered when he saw his first dinosaur on the island. The apatosaur was immense, graceful—and damn it, it was real! InGen would make a fortune off Jurassic Park! But those dreams of raking in millions of dollars instantly vanished when he saw Nedry's body slowly being devoured, and his eyes staring, unblinking, and completely still in death. His gaping mouth sending out silent screams. Gennaro heard the flies buzzing and the compys chirping. The stench of human decomposition, of rotten eggs and feces combined overwhelmed his senses. Remembering it made him feel nauseated, like he'd vomit on himself at any moment.

Muldoon had stuck his head out of the window, still focused on the task of finding the tyrannosaur, when he turned to face Gennaro. His steel blue eyes were fixed in a firm glare, and he shook his head, furious.

"I'll tell you what's more disturbing—that bastard was bloody irresponsible and impulsive to do what he did. He shut down the power just so he could steal embryos from InGen! What the bloody hell was he planning to do with them? Sell them on the black market?! Or was it to hand them over to the highest bidder? InGen's competition?"

Gennaro flinched at his tone.

"I'm no geneticist like Henry, but even I know those embryos cost a huge amount of money: between two and ten million bucks. He shut off the power to commit the theft and threw everyone's lives to the wind. People are dead because of him."

Gennaro nodded quickly to indicate he agreed with Muldoon's stance. "It was messed up."

"Not was! It is messed up!" Muldoon slammed a clenched fist on the steering wheel. "You asked 'what about him?' when we left his rotting corpse."

"I just thought we—he—his body—" Gennaro stammered with his words, unsure of how to respond, and uncertain of what he was trying to say.

"I'm not wasting my time giving a dignified burial to a slob who didn't care that he put everyone in harm's way to make some quick bucks. For God's sake, we found Ed Regis' severed leg! Dennis Nedry has blood on his hands. That's why I said what I did."

Muldoon turned the key in the ignition and the jeep rumbled to life.

"Said what?"

"You weren't bloody listening to me the first time, so I'll say it again: maybe there's justice in the world after all."

Before Gennaro could muster up a response, Muldoon slammed on the gas pedal and accelerated out of there, so that they could continue their search for the tyrannosaur he had christened as "Rexy".
