EPILOGUE
Sam woke up early, the soft morning light filtering through the curtains, casting a warm glow on the room. She turned her head slightly and watched Jack sleeping peacefully beside her, and his face relaxed in sleep. His hair had grown back to normal, the gray vastly outnumbering the dark strands on his head. Time had etched its story across his scalp, each silver strand a testament to the years he had lived and the experiences he had weathered. His once dark mane, now a mottled canvas of age and wisdom, gave him a distinguished, almost sage-like appearance. The journey of life was reflected in this subtle transformation, the gray hair symbolizing not just the passage of time but the resilience and strength that come with it. She loved it and didn't get tired of caressing it.
In the quiet moment, her mind wandered back to something he had asked her during a particularly vulnerable time when he hadn't fully recovered his memories. The scent of fresh coffee wafted in from the kitchen, a comforting aroma that filled the room.
"Do we have kids?" Jack had asked, his voice tinged with confusion and a hint of longing.
Sam had kept that question in the back of her mind ever since. They had never explicitly talked about children, but she knew Jack well enough to understand that he had always wanted them. And truth be told, she had yearned to start a family with him, too. From the first moment she realized she was in love with him, the dream of a family had been a silent, shared hope that had bound them even closer, a beacon of light amid their shared struggles.
When Sam unexpectedly became Atlantis' commanding officer, their lives were upended. The weight of responsibility was crushing, and any dreams of motherhood were put on hold. Their days were filled with danger and uncertainty, their love growing stronger with each shared hardship. This was the life they had known, a life of duty and sacrifice. And yet, despite the challenges, they had found solace in each other, their love a beacon in the darkness, a testament to their resilience and commitment. The emotional toll of their journey was immense, but their passion, a fragile yet unyielding thread, kept them going, making it all worthwhile, even if it was in different galaxies.
Now back on Earth, after everything they had been through—the bombing, Jack's health scare, his memory loss—Sam's priorities had shifted. Her career, once at the forefront of her ambitions, didn't hold the same sway over her anymore despite her position as head of the Research Department on Cyber Defenses. The realization of a life without Jack, which she had glimpsed, had terrified her more than she cared to admit. The depth of her love for him had reshaped her priorities, making her career seem less significant.
Feeling Jack stir beside her, Sam turned to him, her heart full of emotion.
"Morning," he murmured, his eyes meeting hers and seeing that familiar, deep-thinking look.
"Morning," Sam replied softly, reaching to caress his cheek.
"It's a little early for deep thoughts," he said, grinning playfully as he pulled her closer and gently kissed her neck.
Sam held him tightly, her love and determination surging. "Jack," she began, her voice steady but laced with vulnerability, "about what you asked some time ago... about kids..." Her heart was pounding, her mind a whirlwind of fear and hope. She was about to reveal her deepest desire, to expose her vulnerability, and she prayed that Jack would understand.
Jack's expression softened, his eyes searching hers with understanding. "Honey..."
"I want us to have a family," Sam continued, her voice trembling with vulnerability. "I want more than anything to have a baby with you."
Jack's gaze held hers, his hand gently rubbing her back. "I've always wanted that too, Sam. I just... didn't know if you still..."
Tears welled up in Sam's eyes, overwhelmed by the flood of emotions. "I do, Jack. I really do."
They held each other in silence for a moment, the weight of their shared longing and love filling the space between them. Finally, Jack spoke, his voice tender.
"Then let's make it happen. One baby at a time."
Sam nodded, a smile breaking through her tears. "One baby at a time."
As they lay together, embracing the hope and possibility of a future they had both yearned for, Sam knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, united in their love and determination, as they always had. The world outside would remain chaotic, filled with uncertainties and threats, but there was a burgeoning promise of new beginnings within their small corner of the universe.
The day stretched ahead, filled with the ordinary tasks and routines of their now relatively peaceful life. Sam could hear the faint hum of the kitchen coffee machine, birds chirping outside their window, and the distant sounds of a world waking up. But here, in this room, at this moment, it was just the two of them, wrapped in their shared dreams and love.
They had fought many battles and faced many dangers, but now, they were on the brink of a new journey. This one, however, was different. It was not about survival but creation and building a life and a family together. And for Sam, the prospect of this new adventure was both exhilarating and terrifying. As well as for Jack. Fatherhood would be the cherry on top of an already over-the-top delicious cake.
"Sam," he whispered, breaking the silence. "Thank you for always being there for me, for believing in us, even when things were at their darkest."
Sam smiled, her eyes full of love and reassurance. "Always, Jack. No matter what comes our way, we'll face it together."
And as they lay there, wrapped in each other's arms, Sam felt a profound sense of peace and hope. The future was unknown, filled with possibilities and challenges, but with Jack by her side, she knew they could handle anything. Together, they would build the family they had always dreamed of, one step at a time, one baby at a time.
In the warm morning light, their hearts beat in unison, full of love and the promise of new beginnings. The epilogue of their story was not an end but a new chapter, a continuation of their journey together, stronger and more united than ever before.
Six months later
Despite his request for retirement, the opposite happened: Jack was promoted to General and was now the new Chief of Staff of the Air Force. This unexpected turn occurred due to the strict insistence of the newly sworn-in President, Susan Fox. General Moore had retired, and President Fox, recognizing Jack's unparalleled experience and leadership, had personally requested him for the role. After the confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee and the total Senate vote, Jack now belonged to the JCS. It was an honor he couldn't refuse, even if it meant delaying his plans for a quieter life.
At the same time as his promotion, Sam discovered she was pregnant. She had joked with Jack that their baby wanted a General for a father.
"Looks like the little one already has high standards," she teased, her eyes sparkling with joy as she looked at him.
Jack chuckled, pulling her close. "Well, that makes us a pretty impressive team, huh?"
Their pregnancy journey had been surprisingly straightforward. Contrary to Janet's worries that Sam might have trouble conceiving due to her past injuries and Jolinar's influence, it had happened almost effortlessly. As soon as Sam stopped the birth control pill, it just took some very diligent and enthusiastic performances in their bedroom—and some other places in the house—and the result came back positive: she was pregnant.
"I guess all that hard work paid off," Jack said, grinning broadly as he recalled their earnest attempts.
Sam laughed, playfully nudging him. "I must admit, it was the most enjoyable mission we've ever undertaken."
Sam's significant contributions didn't go unnoticed, particularly in uncovering the truth regarding former President Miles Scott and taking out Ba'al. Leveraging her success and reputation, she negotiated with the Air Force to dedicate more time to research and abandon fieldwork. The dangers and constant threats had taken their toll, and the discovery of her pregnancy only solidified her resolve. She became head of the Research Department on Cyber Defenses full-time.
After finding out she was pregnant, her life as a soldier lost all its appeal. She was about to become a mother and focused entirely on their baby and Jack—no more battles against aliens or high-stakes missions in far-off galaxies. She would only go to SGC for Stargate or top-priority alien technology matters. Apart from that, she would remain at the Pentagon.
One evening, as they sat on their porch, watching the sunset, Sam turned to Jack, her hand resting on her growing belly.
"Jack, I never thought I'd say this, but I don't miss the field. I don't miss the adrenaline or the danger. All I can think about now is this little one and our future."
Jack looked at her, his eyes filled with love and understanding. "You've given so much, honey. You've sacrificed more than anyone should. It's time for you to have something just for you, for us."
She smiled, feeling the baby move slightly inside her. "I'm excited, Jack. Scared but excited. This feels like the most important mission of my life."
Jack placed his hand on her belly, feeling the gentle movements of their baby. "You're going to be an amazing mom," he said.
Tears welled up in Sam's eyes, but they were tears of joy. "And you'll be a wonderful father," she said.
Sam turned to Jack with a question she had been having since their last ultrasound when it was revealed they were having a boy: Benjamin Jacob Carter-O'Neill.
"Are you happy it's a boy, or did you prefer a girl?" she asked, her voice tinged with curiosity and a hint of anxiety. She knew how deeply Jack's past, especially his experience with Charlie, had impacted him, and she worried about his insecurities regarding fatherhood.
Jack looked at her, a broad smile spreading across his face.
"I'm thrilled with Benji," he said, his eyes lighting up with genuine joy. "And you know what that means, right?" he added with a grin.
Sam looked at him curiously. "What does it mean?"
Jack's grin widened. "It means we just have to continue and try until we have a girl. I want a girl who looks exactly like you, Dr. O'Neill," he said, his eyes adoring.
Sam blushed deeply, her heart swelling with love. "Oh, you want a girl?" she asked, teasingly. "What if the next one is another boy?"
Jack's smile grew even more. "No problem. We'll try again until we get a girl. I have no problem having the house full of your children. Even the boys can all look like you, blonde and with blue eyes. I won't complain about having little Carters," he said, his tone playful yet sincere.
Sam laughed and patted him on the shoulder. "Of course, you won't complain. I'm the one carrying them and giving birth, asshole," she said, still blushing.
Jack grabbed her hand and kissed it reverently. "I know. And I'll take care of the rest. You won't even know we have six kids," he said, smiling.
Sam opened her mouth, trying to speak but unable to find the words. "S… six..." she finally managed to say.
Jack nodded with a serious face. "At least," he said.
Sam swallowed hard, trying to process the idea. "I think that becoming Chief of Staff of the Air Force messed completely with your brain, General," she said with a deep sigh.
Jack also sighed, but his eyes twinkled with mischief. "We can't waste your magnificent genes, my dear. And my good looks," he said.
Sam started to laugh so hard that she hiccuped, tears of joy streaming down her face. Jack quickly got up and fetched her a glass of water, handing it to her with a concerned expression.
"Here, drink this," he said, watching her with amusement as she took small sips, trying to calm down.
After a few moments, Sam managed to catch her breath, still giggling.
"Six kids, huh?" she said, shaking her head. "I love you, Jack O'Neill, but sometimes I think you're completely out of your mind."
Jack leaned in and kissed her gently on the lips. "Maybe I am, but only because I love you so damn much," he said softly. "And I can't wait to see our future, no matter how many kids we have."
Sam smiled, her heart full of love and contentment. "I can't wait either," she said, resting her head on his shoulder, feeling the warmth of his embrace. "But I wouldn't put my hopes on such a higher number, dear husband," she warned.
Jack showed his teeth in a full smile. "Let's start with Benji and then see what happens. You may end up enjoying being a soccer mom", he said, knowing full well he was pushing his luck.
Sam blinked several times as she let the words sink in. "Soccer mom?" she repeated, looking at him furiously.
Jack merely smiled, and Sam decided to let it pass; otherwise, their firstborn could be born in jail. Benji would never know his father alive and breathing because his mother had murdered him. Probably, picked a knife from the kitchen and stabbed him several times. Yes, Sam was going to let this pass. She would probably have to do that a lot until the baby was born. She had already started Pilates, although she sometimes wanted to do boxing. Or jujitsu. If it wasn't for her belly.
But that scandalous high number was still in her mind. Sam decided to play along just a little more before closing the subject.
"Okay, let's say I get temporarily insane, and we do have six kids. How are you going to handle all the chaos? I wasn't an easy kid, and I bet you weren't also, so I guess our babies will probably be quite… active. To put it mildly."
Jack leaned back, pretending to ponder deeply.
"Well, I'd start by buying a bigger house. Maybe hire a nanny or two if they are indeed playful kids. But mostly, I'd rely on my incredible multitasking skills."
Sam raised an eyebrow, a smile already forming on her lips. "Multitasking skills? Since when do you have those?" Her laughter was starting.
Jack shrugged. "I've picked up a thing or two over the years. You'd be surprised."
Sam shook her head, her laughter finally subsiding. "You know, despite the craziness of the idea, I kind of like the thought of a big family."
Jack's expression softened. "Me too. And we can take it one step at a time. No rush."
Sam nodded, feeling a warm sense of contentment. "One step at a time sounds good."
Jack leaned in, his voice softening. "But seriously, Sam, I'm here for you whatever happens. Whether it's six kids or just Benji. You're my priority."
Sam smiled, her heart swelling with love. "I know, Jack. And that means everything to me."
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the warmth of their connection filling the porch. Jack reached out and gently tucked a strand of hair behind Sam's ear, his touch tender.
"You know," he said, his tone turning playful again, "we could always start practicing for Benji's sister right now."
Sam laughed, her eyes sparkling. "I'm still pregnant, General, in case you haven't noticed."
"Oh, I've noticed, and you looked damn hot, more beautiful than ever. But you know what they say?" he asked, kissing her slowly.
Sighing, Sam decided to play along again.
"What do they say?" she asked, anticipating a weird answer.
"Practice makes perfect, and at least we know we won't get a surprise. It's a win-win situation, Colonel", he said with a wide smile.
Sam rolled her eyes. "Why did I even ask? You're impossible, Jack. "
Jack grinned. "But you love me anyway."
Sam leaned in and kissed him softly. "Yes, I do. Despite all the stupid things you say."
"I know you just married me for my body, but I don't mind being objectified. I can be reduced to my physical attributes and sexual desirability any day. I'm here to serve you, my glorious and genius wife", he said, turning the kiss more passionate.
Sam laughed against his lips as she kissed him, and he couldn't feel happier.
"Stop saying stupid things," she demanded, her hands moving to his hair as the kiss continued.
They would be parents in three months, and hopefully, it would be the first of many. Jack had his hopes high. Having the house full of little Carters running around would be a dream come true. Like the day he married the woman he was currently kissing after years of dreaming about it.
Samantha Carter had brought him back to life, first as a young Captain with an answer to everything he asked and a heart of gold. Then, she had wrapped his heart with those amazing blue eyes and her dazzling smile, which lit up an entire room and held him hostage until the day he died. With one, two, or six babies with her, Jack would always feel like winning the lottery.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over them, they sat silently, wrapped in each other's arms. The world was still filled with uncertainties, but they had found peace and a new beginning within their small corner of the universe.
Sam knew this was just the start of a new chapter filled with hope, love, and the promise of a future they both longed for. And with Jack by her side, she was ready to embrace whatever came next, knowing they would face it together, stronger and more united than ever, even with his stupid jokes and desire for an extended family, which was starting to grow fondly on her if they looked like their father. Maybe they would need a bigger house after all.
"Honey," Jack murmured, his voice softening as he looked into her eyes. "You ever think about what our kids will be like?"
Sam smiled, leaning her forehead against his. "All the time since I found out I was pregnant. I hope they're as curious and brave as you are, but maybe with more sense."
Jack chuckled. "Sense is overrated. Adventure is where it's at."
"Well, let's hope they get your sense of adventure and my sense of caution," Sam said, her smile widening.
Jack nodded, a look of contentment spreading across his face. "Yeah, that sounds like a good mix. But whatever they are, I know we'll love them just as much."
"Agreed," Sam said, her heart swelling with love for the man beside her. "And they'll be lucky to have you as their dad."
"And they'll be lucky to have you as their mom," Jack replied, his voice full of sincerity. "I can't wait to see where this journey takes us, Sam."
"Me neither," she whispered, kissing his lips. "Me neither."
As the stars twinkled above them, they held each other close, ready to face whatever challenges and joys the future held. Together, they were unstoppable, a perfect team prepared to take on the world and create a family filled with love, laughter, and endless adventures.
Jack looked into Sam's eyes, his heart swelling with love and anticipation. "You know, no matter how many babies we end up having, we'll make it work," he said softly, his voice filled with conviction.
Sam nodded, her own heart mirroring his emotions. "Absolutely. We'll figure it out as we go. It's not about the number of children, but the love and care we give them."
Jack grinned, a twinkle in his eye. "And the fun we have along the way. Can you imagine all the adventures we can share with them? Camping trips, stargazing, teaching them about the universe's wonders."
Sam laughed, the sound musical in the quiet night. "I can already see you building a telescope with them, showing them the constellations and telling them all your crazy stories."
Jack chuckled. "And you, teaching them about the stars and physics, helping them with their science projects. They'll have the best of both worlds."
"We'll make a great team, Jack. Just like we always have," Sam said, her voice filled with warmth and certainty.
Jack pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her as they gazed at the sky. "No matter what, we'll be there for each other. Through thick and thin, through every challenge and every joy."
Sam nestled into his embrace, feeling the steady beat of his heart against hers. "Yes, we will. And we'll ensure our children know they're loved and cherished daily."
Jack kissed her head, a sense of peace washing over him. "And we'll ensure they know how lucky we are to have them. How grateful we are for every moment."
The night grew quieter, the stars shining brighter as the couple held each other, lost in dreams of the future. They knew there would be sleepless nights and difficult days, but they also knew there would be laughter, hugs, and the indescribable joy of watching their children grow.
Sam closed her eyes as the cool breeze whispered through the trees, envisioning a home filled with tiny feet running through the halls, the scent of cookies baking in the oven, and the warmth of family gatherings.
Jack let his mind wander, imagining the day he would teach their children to ride bikes, their family vacations, and the endless stories they would share around the dinner table.
They both knew that whatever the future held, they would face it together, stronger and more united than ever. Their love for each other was a foundation that could weather any storm and nurture the dreams they held close to their hearts.
Eventually, they returned inside, still wrapped in each other's embrace. The night was long but passed in a blur of whispered promises and gentle kisses, each sealing their commitment to the journey ahead.
Ultimately, it wasn't about how many babies would be born or how many challenges they would face. It was about the love that bound them together, the unwavering support they offered each other, and the endless adventures they were destined to share.
It was what it was, and it was perfect. As long as they had each other, they knew they could conquer the world, one step at a time, one day at a time, creating a life filled with love, laughter, and memories that would last a lifetime.
