Obito managed to find blue poppies thanks to Inoich's wife. She was a true help because she helped Obito with a price that was desirable -ish. It's not like Obito had a whole lot of money. Especially now that he had to pay taxes.
Obito delivered them to Konan's apartment where she wasn't home. He knew Konan wouldn't mind so he used Kamui to walk through the door. Obito placed the blue poppies onto Konan's kitchen counter but was unhappy with just placing them, he scrounged around for a glass cup and put the flowers inside, a little bit of water on the bottom.
Obito walked through the door again and was greeted by the teenage Uchiha, Shisui. "Tobi, you look happy, I think. It's hard to tell with the mask."
Obito was slightly irked but hid it underneath his Tobi persona. "What is it, Shisui?"
Shisui shrugged, "Well, I was tasked with informing you to meet your squad for a mission hand-selected by the Hokage."
Obito glanced at his neighboring apartment, hoping he could get some alone time. But turned back to Shisui, "Alright, Tobi'll comply."
As he made his way to the Hokage's estate, Obito's mind raced with thoughts.
Arriving at Hiruzen's office, Obito found Kakashi already waiting, his visible eye scanning the teal book. Konan stood beside him, her blue hair a stark contrast against the morning sun seeping through the windows. The Third Hokage soon ushered them in, his presence commanding silence. "It must be a serious mission." Obito thought.
"Lord Third," Obito bowed slightly, as did the others.
The Third Hokage nodded, his eyes grave. "This mission involves the Uchiha. There have been troubling signs, and whispers of discontent. But that has little to do with your mission. As this is a special request from Fugaku Uchiha. I know very little of what or why he wishes for you three to help but I can't say no." He glanced at Obito, "There won't be a problem, right Tobi?" Hiruzen was cautious to use Obito's name, Obito thought it was maybe due to Danzo spying on him.
Obito's body clenched at hearing the Uchiha and Fugaku being named. But he'd put his grievances aside...for now. "No, Lord Third."
He nodded, "Very well. Just tread carefully, we needn't cause any tension with the Uchiha if it can be avoided."
Kakashi looked up, his eye serious. "Understood, Hokage-sama. We won't let you down."
The team made their way in silence to the Uchiha clan's residential area, navigating through the dimly lit streets until they reached the large, traditional house of the Uchiha clan leader, Fugaku Uchiha. The atmosphere was tense, a stark difference from the usual bustling village. As they approached, they noticed several members of the Uchiha clan quietly observing them, their expressions unreadable.
Once reaching Fugaku's home, Fugaku Uchiha greeted them at the door, his demeanor calm yet commanding. "Welcome," he said, leading them into a more private room. Once seated, Fugaku began to outline the reason for their mission. "There is a relic, an heirloom in a manner of speaking, belonging to the Uchiha clan. It's been stolen, and it's likely being sold on the black market." Fugaku's voice was steady, but the undercurrent of urgency was palpable. "This heirloom is not just a symbol of our clan's history; it holds power, power that could be devastating in the wrong hands."
The team exchanged glances, understanding the gravity of the situation. "We need you to retrieve it before it's too late. This is a matter of our clan's honor and the village's safety," Fugaku added, locking eyes with each member of the team.
Obito cleared his throat, "What exactly are we looking for?" The high pitchiness of Tobi present.
Fugaku stood grabbed a portrait and handed it to Tobi. To Obito's surprise, it was a picture of Hashirama Senju and Madara, both wearing their red armor and headbands. "This is of the founders."
"The heirloom that was stolen was Madara's gunbai, or war fan. It was made specially for Madara and passed down to each clan head. If I must be frank, I declined to have ownership over it. I had it buried in Madara's tomb. It has been a testament to the Uchiha's strength for over sixty years, it must be returned. Whether I agree with Madara's philosophy or not." Fugaku explained.
Kakashi was the first to respond. "We understand, Fugaku-sama. We'll begin immediately."
Fugaku nodded, clearly relieved yet still tense. "Thank you. Time is of the essence. I've arranged for some of our contacts to provide you with information about the black market dealer's possible whereabouts."
The contact Fugaku spoke of was the old man Obito saved from falling a couple months back.
The old man recognized Konan, "Ah, the pretty blue bird. If my old brain remembers you were with a man wearing a yellow mask. But now I see you have brought two masked men, yellow must've not been your color, Miss."
Konan blushed a little, "Umm well..."
Obito bowed, "That was me. But my yellow mask was broken during training." His voice was his own.
The old man smiled, "Ahh, the speedy savior."
Obito was puzzled, "Wait, how did you know?"
The old man laughed, "I may be old but I'm not dumb. I knew I didn't finish my sign, but someone else did faster than I could perceive."
Obito looked away, a little embarrassed about his good deed being brought into the light. "I wasn't expecting to have this conversation today or ever."
Konan giggled with glee, "Come on, Obi, just accept that you did something good."
Obito sighed, "I guess, you're welcome for the help, Mr?"
The old man answered with a smile, "Katsuro is fine."
Kakashi interrupted, "This is fine and all, but we're here on a mission."
Katsuro remembered, "Ah, you're the fellows Fugaku sent. Give me a moment to get the coordinates for my broker." Katsuro walked to a room behind the counter.
Kakashi looked at Obito, "I didn't know you were back in the business of helping the elderly." A clear jab at Obito's past trait.
"It was just the one time," Obito defended. "I'll never go back to losing all my time to helping anyone I see."
Konan smirked, she felt like Obito was more full of life and soul. "You're too much like Yahiko. It's almost like it was fate." She thought to herself.
Katsuro came back with a ledger, placing it onto the counter, he searched throughout and pointed to a set of written coordinates. "If I recall, this is where the usual hoodlums meet to sell whatever stolen goods they can." Kakashi recognized the coordinates, "That's somewhere above the Hokage mountain, right?"
Katsuro pointed at Kakashi with a smile, "Very good. I'd expect no less from Sakumo's son."
Everyone was surprised to hear Kakashi's father being mentioned.
Kakashi was hesitant to ask, "You knew my father?"
Katsuro's expression turned somber, "I did. That's what makes his fate hang heavy on my shoulders because I was one of the people he saved over completing his mission. It wasn't right that everyone vilified him for it. You have my sympathy, Hatake."
Konan worried that Kakashi might be shaken by the man's words. But he looked somewhat happy.
"Thank you, Katsuro. It's nice to have more proof that my father's path was the right one." Kakashi said.
Katsuro wouldn't know it but Kakashi was thankful for the events that shaped him. "Through tragedy does one find who they're meant to be. I think the Second Hokage once said that." He voiced his thoughts.
Obito contemplated those words. His life wasn't necessarily filled with tragedy up until he lost his right side. Rin's death was a tragedy that shaped his life, but he questioned what would have happened if he had seen Rin's death as a noble sacrifice. The world would probably be much better if he hadn't succumbed to darkness he might've become Hokage by now. But maybe things worked out better this way. The Akatsuki was fully under Nagato's control, Obito's relationship with Kakashi was mended, Obito discovered love in Konan, Minato forgave Obito, and Madara's plans would never see fruition. But only time would tell if they were truly good.
Scouting out the supposed meeting site, Konan sensed one person hiding in a tree. Kakashi thought they should be cautious, but Obito had different plans. Phasing through the tree and behind the thief hiding in the tree, he noticed that the thief wasn't going to be a threat at all. "That's a nice fan, where'd you get it?"
The thief stumbled forward, scared of the voice behind him. "Ahh, ghost!" He threw a kunai at Obito but it hit the tree.
Obito stepped onto the branch, deactivating Kamui. "What's your name?"
The thief's voice cracked, "Iruka. Iruka Umino." The boy was a chunin by his attire.
Obito took a step forward, "Well, Iruka, may I ask why you stole that gunbai?"
Iruka grabbed onto the fan on his back, he looked back at the masked man. "I heard this fan is expensive, it can buy me a life away from being a Shinobi." The teenager seemed to hold great pain behind his eyes.
Obito sat down in front of Iruka, his legs crossed. "Why? Why do you wish to leave your Shinobi life?"
The teenager froze unsure how to answer, the masked man was an anomaly that he didn't quite understand. "I umm... I want to leave before I end up like my parents."
Obito rubbed his chin, or what part of the mask covered his chin. "If you don't want to be your parents just tell them so." He thought it was pretty straightforward.
Iruka slouched, "That's not what I meant. They umm... tried protecting me from the demon fox."
Obito took a deep breath, that night will forever haunt him. "I can't imagine what you're going through as I didn't grow up with parents, but it doesn't mean that you should walk down a path of loneliness. I've walked that road long enough to know that the only good thing to come of it is when you finally get off."
Iruka loosened his grip on the fan, "But of all the stories I hear of being a Shinobi, they're all terrible." His voice trembled.
Obito looked out over the village, "While it's true the Shinobi world is inherently cruel, it also has some of the most noble and gentle of souls. However, they are in such short supply. I'm not telling you to be a Shinobi or even not run away, just think long and hard before you make such a drastic decision." He stood up and motioned for the gunbai.
Iruka debated the masked man's words and thought maybe it would be better if he stayed. He relinquished the gunbai to Obito, who held onto it tightly. He used his free hand to hold onto Iruka, jumping down with Iruka. Iruka stumbled as he landed but was stabilized by paper holding him steady.
Iruka went wide-eyed seeing Kakashi Hatake, "You're...!?"
Kakashi smiled from underneath his mask and then he recognized the teen, "Yep. Wait a second, aren't you the chunin with too much heart?"
Iruka rubbed the back of his head nervously, "Yeah, that's what Lord Third likes to say."
Kakashi nodded, "Alright, we can look past this one moment of selfishness. So go on and pretend this never happened."
Iruka bowed, "Thank you, Kakashi." He was gonna run off but then looked at Kakashi's team members. "I don't think I caught your names."
Konan smirked, "You can call me Konan. And Mr mysterious, well, you can call him Tobi."
Iruka smiled brightly at Obito, "Thank you, Tobi. I hope I can meet you again one day and repay the favor." He ran off toward the village.
Konan and Kakashi turned to Obito, noticing that the gunbai fit well with Obito. Obito felt their stares, he knew they were eyeing Madara's gunbai. He placed the fan securely on his back. "Well, now that we've acquired the fan it's time we return it."
Konan interrupted, "You can go on and deliver the fan. I've got some business to take care of and it seems like you won't be needing me." There was conflict behind Konan's eyes.
"Is something wrong, Konan?" Obito asked, unaware that Danzo made a move on Konan.
Konan straightened up and hid her turmoil with a smile, "It's nothing."
Kakashi suspected that Konan was mulling over whatever Danzo said to her. But he wondered why Konan didn't say anything about it to Obito, the guy who could take Danzo's whole operation down without breaking a sweat. Kakashi needed more to go off of so he'd tail Konan. "I think I'll go too. I hear there's a recently released book similar to Makeout Paradise."
Both Kakashi and Konan departed from Obito, into the village.
Obito stood there for a moment, feeling a minor sense of solitude. He wasn't looking forward to dealing with Fugaku by himself, just one slip-up, and Fugaku would know Tobi was an Uchiha. But he had no choice but to deliver Madara's gunbai, it's not like anyone else was going to use it.
On the dirt path leading to the main gate of the Hidden Leaf village, there walked a man wearing a bamboo hat and a grey cloak. Underneath the hat laid two crimson eyes, scanning anything it could.
Upon reaching the gate, two Shinobi stood guard. They stopped the cloaked figure.
"Halt! State your business in the Hidden Leaf." One of the guards said.
"Visiting my pupil," the cloaked figure said. His voice was deep and menacing.
The other guard asked, "Are you a past citizen of the Leaf?" Boredom was evident in his voice.
The cloaked figure smiled, "I was once, but..." The figure tipped the bamboo hat upward, "That was before my final battle." A devious smirk plastered on his face. "Now tell me, which one of you wants to dance first?"
