The next morning, Petunia and Hyacinth put the boys in the new double stroller, and they went for a walk. They soon ran into one of Petunia's neighbors.
"Petunia, Hyacinth, I'm so sorry to hear about your sister," she said. "How are you holding up?"
"I'm alright," Petunia said. "I'm mostly worried about Hyacinth and my nephew."
Hyacinth was shocked to hear that. She was worried that Petunia didn't care about her anymore, and she certainly didn't think Petunia cared about Harry.
In the downstairs bathroom, Hyacinth washed her hands after using the toilet.
Harry screamed. "Mummy," he yelled, crying.
Hyacinth rushed out, to Harry. He was lying on the ground, in tears, while Dudley was crawling on him.
Hyacinth tried to pull Dudley off of Harry. He wouldn't budge. He was too heavy.
Suddenly, Hyacinth was grabbed, and tossed onto the floor. "How dare you grab Dudley like that," Petunia scolded.
Hyacinth tensed up, frozen. Seconds later she felt horrible for having frozen like that when Harry needed her. She quickly rushed over to Harry.
Dudley was no longer on top of Harry, but Harry was still in tears. Hyacinth picked him up, set him on her lap, and held him.
"Mummy," Harry said, leaning into her and burying his face into her chest.
Petunia snorted. "So, Harry thinks you're his Mummy now?"
Hyacinth froze. Did he? She had thought he was asking for Lily, but he had just said it before leaning into her. Maybe Petunia was right.
"Lily is looking down on us, from heaven, you know. She must be extremely jealous and heartbroken, seeing as you've stolen her place in her son's life."
Hyacinth gasped. She felt horrible, realizing that she had taken Lily's place in Harry's life. She started breathing heavily, and rocking back and forth, with Harry in her arms.
Petunia glared at her, picked up Dudley, and walked away.
Hyacinth started trembling. She lifted Harry, and set him on the floor. She tried to crawl away from Harry, fearing that he would get hurt, and then she just collapsed and shook.
When she was finally able to process things again, she was lying on the floor. She breathed deeply, feeling exhausted. She looked over at Harry. He sat there, watching her, clearly concerned.
She sat up, and he crawled over to her. She set him on her lap and held him. "I'm sorry Lily," she whispered. She knew she wasn't going to be able to get out of the position of Harry's new Mummy unless she started neglecting him, and she couldn't do that. Betraying Lily seemed like the lesser evil.
"I can't believe I never noticed how much of a freak you were," said Petunia.
Hyacinth looked around, and saw Petunia sitting on the couch, holding Dudley. How long had she been there?
Later that day, Harry got tired and drifted off to sleep, on the middle of the floor. Hyacinth picked him up, and carried him over to the wall. She set him down there, and laid down on the other side of him. She was sure Dudley wouldn't be able to climb on Harry. Soon, they were both asleep.
Hyacinth didn't normally take naps, but she did that day and she had the day before. Since Harry's arrival she would just fall asleep whenever he did. She tired to tell herself that the only reason she had been so tired since Harry's arrival was just because she had freaked out when Petunia found out she was a witch, and had freaked out again the next day.
At dinner, that day, Hyacinth sat on the chair, with her legs spread out on the sides of the chair, Harry sat between her legs. She looked down and gave Harry, who could not reach the table, a bite of his food. He gobbled it up, and she set the spoon on his plate. She leaned over and picked up the fork on her own plate.
There was a knock at the door.
"Hyacinth," Vernon said, sternly, "answer that."
Hyacinth was shocked. Her parents had never allowed her to answer the door. She looked to Petunia.
Petunia nodded.
She picked up Harry, set him on the floor, and carefully got up. She wished he had a high chair, like Dudley.
She went to the door, opened it, and starred at a man she had seen in a picture. "Marauder?" she asked.
"Yeah. I'm James's friend, and fellow Marauder, Remus Lupin."
"Who is it?" Petunia called.
"Remus Lupin. James's friend."
Vernon got up and started storming to the door. Hyacinth ran into another room, and put her earplugs in while Vernon was yelling.
"Hush-a-bye, don't you cry," Hyacinth sang, while making a plush horse dance around. "Go to sleep little baby.
"In your bed, you shall find, all the pretty little horses. Blacks and bays, dapples and greys. All the pretty little horses."
It was the same song she had sang him last night, but tonight she added an extra line.
"Way up high, in the sky, angels cry for their baby."
Feeling guilty, Hyacinth kissed Harry on the forehead. She mainly felt guilty about the way Harry addressed her and seemed to adore her. She also felt guilty about the fact that she adored him, and she didn't think she was a good Mummy.
There were multiples times when she wished that she had a moment to herself. She was barely able to lift him, and she hated doing so. She also hated changing his nappies (diapers). She also kept on freaking out, in front of him, which made her temporarily mentally and emotionally unavailable.
The next day, Hyacinth had to go back to school. She was very nervous, but then Petunia promised that, while she was also in charge of Harry, she wouldn't let Dudley climb on him or anything.
Hyacinth found herself relaxing in class, and not paying much attention. She even fell asleep in class, which she had never done before. She was woken up by the recess bell, but she was excited to go outside and swing.
Hyacinth didn't have any friends at school. She had never been able to understand how to become friends with other kids. She had sometimes interacted with the kids at her old school, but not here. After her parents died she became more timid and nervous then she had been before, and shortly after that she had to start year 5 (4th grade) at a new school.
Hyacinth walked in the door. Harry quickly ran over to her. Hyacinth crouched down. Harry reached her, and threw his arms around her. Hyacinth flinched, and then wrapped her arms around him.
"Harry kept crying, when you left. It was very annoying."
Hyacinth felt awful. "Did you try to comfort him?" she asked, although she suspected she already knew the answer.
"No," Petunia paused. "What's that?" she asked, as her voice switched to an angry tone.
She handed the envelop to her, nervously. Her teacher had given it to her to give to Petunia, but she really didn't know what it was.
Petunia snatched it out of her hand, and quickly opened it. "This is probably my fault," she said. "I shouldn't have said I was pulling you out of school for a few days because our sister died."
Petunia went into the other room, and then came back. "Why are you freaks still hugging each other?"
"Harry doesn't want to let go."
Petunia sighed. "Give this to your teacher," she said, holding out the paper.
Hyacinth took one arm off of Harry, and grabbed it. She held it out and looked at it. It was a note asking for permission to make Hyacinth go and see the school psychologist. Petunia said no, and that she was perfectly capable of helping her sister.
