Five: Wonderland Pt 1
(Kairi's POV)
The rabbit hole took us down to an oddly wide room. What was even more peculiar was that there was actual furniture floating.
"Whoa!" Sora cries, ducking his head as a lamp floats towards him.
The fortunate thing was that we were falling slowly but that could be from Donalds magic, as he mentioned before we would survive the fall no matter how far it is.
"Where are we?" I wonder. Not specifically looking for an answer.
I land perfectly on my feet as if I were stepping off an escalator. As soon as the four of us have landed safely on the ground, a white rabbit wearing glasses, a red coat, a yellow button up shirt with a red bow tie, and gray pants runs in our direction panting.
"Oh my fur and whiskers! I'm late!" The rabbit cries, as he waddles closer to us. "The Queen will have my head for sure!"
He dashed by us, gasping loudly. I wasn't surprised since I was getting used to talking to dressed animals at this point.
"Maybe he knows where we are!" Sora says, answering my previous question. "Come on!"
The four of us hurried after the rabbit running through a teal colored room, then to a large pink room. In the corner was a dark pink bookshelf next to a window seat. Across from the window seat, on the other side of the room was a dark pink fireplace. Was this the white rabbit's house? Or just a house? So many questions.
The rabbit didn't seem to notice that we were following him. He ran right across the room, muttering and complaining to himself before he opened a small door at the far end of the room and shutting it loudly behind him. It was the smallest door I've ever seen, possibly around two feet high.
"How did he get so small?" Sora asks, as the four of us crouch to our knees to peer closely at the door.
The doorknob had a face. The nose was actually the knob of the door. Above the knob were its eyes that were closed and below it was its mouth that was snoring quietly.
"How bizarre!" I murmur, as I observe the doorknob closely. "The rabbit did seem to get smaller before he left through this door!"
I reach forwards and grab at the doorknob and twist it in an attempt to open it. This causes the doorknobs eyes to snap open, startling us all.
"HEY!"
I yelp out of surprise and fall back against Sora.
"And you're all simply too big." The doorknob remarks, he wiggles his nose and blinks his eyes rapidly.
"IT TALKS!?" Donald screeches.
I couldn't help but giggle.
"Says the talking duck himself!"
"HEY!" Donald shouts, shooting me a sour look.
"Must you be so loud?" The doorknob yawns, "I'm trying to nap…"
His eyelids begin to flutter.
"Wait!" Sora cries, I crawl out of his lap so he can lean closer to the doorknob. "What do we have to do to get small!?"
"Why don't you try the bottle….over there…" The doorknob drawls, his eyelids closing shut.
I look behind my shoulder at a pink round table in the middle of the room. Was it there before? I couldn't remember, but in the center of the table were two bottles. One orange and one blue.
"How do we know which one is the right one?" I ask, as we all rise to our feet.
"Well, I guess we'll just have to try them both!" Goofy replies.
"But isn't this strange?" I picked up the blue bottle cautiously, "These bottles could be filled with poison for all we know…"
I pop off the lid and bring it under my nose. Fortunately it had no odor, like rotten eggs or garlic. It smelled like juice.
"I think we may be in the clear." I add.
"Do potions heal us if we're poisoned?" Sora asks Donald.
"Yup!" Donald replies, "That's why I wasn't questioning it."
I smirk. "Out of habit I guess! Someone had to make sure all those tree stumps and wooden planks were secure back on our island!" My eyes met with Sora's.
He grins. "It's true!"
"Okay, here it goes…" I say, tipping the bottle against my lips, the liquids are sweet and tasted like a variety of juices the more I drank from it.
"Well!?" Donald asks impatiently.
"It has a variety of flavors but…" I pause to look down at my feet. "I don't feel any different! I look about the same size!"
"Let me see that!"
Sora takes the bottle from my hand and chugs from it.
"Not too much!" I cry.
Sora crinkles his nose as he sets the bottle back on the table.
"Huh…I taste…cherries, apples, and blueber-AH!"
My head meets the ceiling with a hard THUNK!
"Goodness!" I cry, rubbing at the back of my head that was now throbbing.
I look at Sora to see he's grown the same height as me, I wince as he smacks his head on the ceiling as well. I look down to see Donald and Goofy staring up at us with alarmed expressions.
"Sora! Kairi!" Goofy exclaims, he sounds so faint from up here.
"You guys are giants!" Donald yells.
"Well, then the blue one isn't it!" Sora grumbles. His spiky hair folded over his eyes, as it was scrunched up from the ceiling.
"Then it must be the orange one!" I exclaim, holding out my hand. It was gigantic.
"Goofy! Can you please hand me the orange bottle!?"
Goofy nods, grabbing the orange bottle from the table before tossing it into my hand. It was about the size of a paperclip as it lay in my open palm. Quickly, I sip from the orange bottle before handing it over to Sora.
"Careful!" I warn, followed by a hiccup.
And that's when the world blurred around me as I flew closer to the ground. I squeal as my body shrinks rapidly to about a foot tall. Sora, Donald, and Goofy, looked like monsters in comparison along with the rest of the furniture in the room. It was like I had turned into a doll.
"Wow, Kairi!" Goofy chuckles. "You sure are small!"
"Drink from the orange bottle so we can catch up to the white rabbit!" I yell at them.
Once the four of us were at the preferred one foot height, we were able to get through the door with the doorknob face. Past the doorknob led us to the outdoors. The white castle that we spotted before we landed in this world was in clear view now. Harshed voices could be heard from behind the tall hedges in front of the castle.
"The court finds the defendant ... .guilty as charged! For the crimes of assault and attempted theft of my heart. OFF WITH HER HEAD!"
"Oh no, please!" Another voice cried, this one sound younger and had an elegant accent.
I turn to look over at Sora, Donald, and Goofy.
"A trial?" I whisper.
"She doesn't seem guilty…" Sora says. "I bet you the heartless are here! We should help her!"
"But we can't mud….uh…" Goofy sputters, looking over at Donald helplessly. "Muddle?"
"MEDDLE!" Donald yells impatiently.
Sora and I hush him. Donald and Goofy were right, and we didn't know the situation but somewhere in my heart was telling me to help this girl. Instinctively I had already started to walk away from the others and towards the tall hedges.
"Kairi, wait!" Sora whispers loudly from behind me.
I bolt past the hedges and right to where the trial was being held. It indeed was set like an actual courtroom. There were wooden seats that encircled around the defendants stand, where a blonde girl dressed in a blue dress and white tights stood. Standing behind a tall desk in front, was a large woman with dark hair pulled back in a tight bun, wearing a black and red dress, and on her head was a crown. She must be the Queen.
Once her eyes spotted me standing by the blonde girl, she scowled, her face growing red from anger.
"AND WHO ARE YOU!?" She sneers at me.
The blonde turns to look at me curiously as Sora, Donald, and Goofy catch up to me. There was some sort of light force that had me step closer to the girl, in my heart I had the sudden urge to protect her. As if the two of us had known each other our entire lives.
"She isn't guilty, your majesty." I answer, "There are these creatures everywhere…they are the ones you're looking for."
"Nonsense!" The Queen scoffed, "have you any proof!?"
Has she not been around? There was proof everywhere. Or have the heartless not shown up to this world yet?
"I know it sounds crazy, but they're everywhere, your highness." I reply, choosing my words carefully. I've only known this Queen for a few minutes but I could already tell she was short-tempered.
I glanced over to see a few cards by her, like actual playing cards but they were oversized and like the doorknob, they had faces. Each one held a lance, the top accessory matched their card shape.
"Perhaps your card soldiers here have seen them."
My suggestion causes the Queen to slam her big fists on the desk in front of her violently.
"WELL! UNTIL YOUR FRIENDS CAN PROVE TO ME YOU'RE NOT LYING AND THAT ALICE IS INNOCENT, YOU TWO WILL BE LOCKED UP!"
She looks at the card soldiers and gestures to Alice and I.
"WAIT!" Sora cries behind me, as one of the cards grabs my arms roughly from behind. "KAIRI!"
Sora hurries over to me only to be pushed back by another card soldier.
"WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA!?" Donald yells at the card, as Goofy gasps from beside him.
A hearts card grabs Alice and ushers her toward a large black bird cage that sat vacantly next to the Queens stage. The card soldiers tossed us both into the cage, locking it tightly from behind. I turn on my knees to see Sora knocking the cards out of his way, his spikes bounce wildly as he hurries over to me with a frantic expression on his face.
"Kairi!"
Sora is in front of me from behind the bars of the cage, on his knees looking at me with wide anxious eyes.
"Bring me the evidence of Alice's innocence and I shall set her and your girlfriend free!" The Queen declared from her stage. "Fail and it is off with their heads! You've got two hours, boy!"
I peered as far as I could to see the Queen waddle off the stage, with a few of her card soldiers behind her.
"Who are you?" Alice asks besides me.
"I'm Kairi, this is my boyfriend, Sora and our friends, Donald and Goofy. It's crazy but we're from other worlds."
"Pleased to meet you, though I do wish we were in a better situation, I'm sorry you got caught in this nonsense." Alice says apologetically. We look over at Sora who is frantically pulling at the lock and tapping at it with his keyblade.
"I don't get it, Leon said that this key can open all locks! Why is this one not budging!?"
"Guess we'll have to find evidence!" Goofy suggests as Donald shrugs.
"Hey…" I reach my hand out, slipping it between the bars the best I could, Sora looks at me taking my fingers in his hand instantly.
"It will be okay, I promise." I say, "You go with Donald and Goofy, find any trace of heartless. I'll think of a way to get Alice and I out of here."
Sora sighs. "I just hate to leave you like this…."
"We don't have much time, I'll be okay." I reassure him with a smile, "Sora, I believe in you."
"Okay, I'll be back as soon as I can."
Sora brings my fingers to his lips before he gently sets them back in the cage. He then looks at Donald and Goofy. "Alright guys, let's go!"
I watch the three as they take off past the hedges and through some overgrown lotus. We were going to get out of here.
"Oh dear, we're really trapped, aren't we?"
I turn to Alice grinning. "Nope! It just happens that I have this!"
I took out a bobby pin from my skirt pocket and held it up for her to see. She looks at me baffled.
"Well, what will that do?"
"It will get us out of here! We just have to make sure nobody is watching us!" I explained, "Could you keep watch for me?"
I lean forward as I bend the pin outwards, stretching it to give myself more room to place it inside the lock.
"Of course! I'm quite good with distractions as well!" Alice replies, she scoots closer to me. "Where did you learn to do that?" Her bright blue eyes watch my hands as I work the lock.
I smile.
"Living on an Island, you learn a thing or two!"
"An Island?" Alice repeats, her blue eyes grow wide.
"Yup! Destiny Islands, although I'm originally from another world but...I haven't a clue where."
"How dreadful!" Alice sighs, "I do hope you find it, perhaps once we get out of this mess!"
"Thanks, Alice." I smile, "How did you get on trial anyways!?"
I maneuvered the lock slightly to the right, the pressure was beginning to lighten.
"I'm wondering the same thing." Alice shakes her head, "I asked the Cheshire cat how to get home and told me to ask the Queen, so I did and I was arrested."
CLICK!
Alice and I both gasp as the lock slips off and lands into the grass below. I look warily at our surroundings. The spade card soldier who was supposedly supposed to be watching us, was fast asleep leaned up against a tree snoring loudly.
I look over at Alice.
"We're going to have to be very quiet." I point at the sleeping guard.
Alice nods and follows me as we crawl out from the birdcage. My back already ached despite our brief time in there. Fortunately the Queen was nowhere in sight. The court area remained empty. We got lucky.
"Come on," I whisper, taking Alice's hand in mine. The two of us tiptoed past the sleeping soldier and toward the oversized lotus.
The white rabbit jumped out from the hedges to our right, I nearly screamed out of surprise. Thankfully I didn't.
"No one's EVER questioned the Queen of Hearts judgment of trial before!" The rabbit said much too loudly. Alice and I hushed him. I look frantically around us, to my relief the card soldier was still fast asleep.
"The Queen's word is law here!" The rabbit jabbers on, with the same loud tone.
"Alright!" I yell in a hushed whisper. "We get it!"
"Please, spare us!" ALice begs, "We won't tell anyone!"
The white rabbit sputters. "B-but the Queen! I must tell her! Or she'll have my head!"
I leap forward in an attempt to grab him, but he dashes off before I could touch him. He was too fast. Alice and I watch him in disbelief as he scurries across the lawn and toward the white castle.
"What do we do now!?" Alice whispers.
"We run! Come on, we have to find Sora!"
I take her hand and guide her toward the lotus forest.
(Sora's POV)
"Well, I believe we found all the evidence!: I say, holding up two pairs of antennas that the heartless have dropped. It wasn't difficult to find since this world is full of heartless as well.
"We'd better bring this to the Queen so she'll release Kairi and Alice!" Goofy says.
"Yeah, we have about a half hour left." I replied, "Do you guys remember the way back?" I look around the oversized lotus around us. It was like a maze, everywhere looked the same!
"Uhh…" Donald and Goofy both drawled.
"I'm shure we'll find our way!" I reassure my new friends. "At least now we can save Kairi and Alice!"
"Don't be so sure!" A mischievous voice taunts.
I turn nearly jumping out of my skin, as I see a floating smile in front of me. Just a pair of grinning white teeth. It was the Cheshire Cat. We had ran into him earlier when we first arrived in the forest. Slowly, his eyes and nose appeared in view along with the rest of his body.
"Time is ticking!" He says in a sing-song voice before he fully vanishes.
"I've always hated cats!: Donald huffs, stomping his webbed foot impatiently.
"Come on, let's try and retrace our steps." I suggest, my eyes spot a specific moss covered log. "Hey, that log looks familiar! Let's head down that path and see where it takes us!"
Donald and Goofy nod and follow me down the path. The sun was getting lower behind the lotus stems, we were running out of time. I hope that Kairi was okay.
"Come on guys, we have to hurry! The Queen won't give Kairi or Alice any mercy!"
I round the corner of a big lotus stump and end up crashing into something, knocking over on impact. I stumble and sputter out of surprise, nearly losing my balance.
"SORA! It's Kairi!" Donald exclaims.
To my relief, it WAS Kairi.
"Kairi! How did you get out of that cage?" I ask, as I bend over to help her up to her feet.
She shrugs.
"Luck, I guess! I was able to pick the lock with a bobby pin!' She replies, her voice hoarse from running. "But that's not important! Alice is gone!"
I frowned.
"She didn't escape with you?"
Kairi shook her head impatiently.
"She was! We were in this forest looking for you, she was right next to me! I look away for a moment and she's gone!"
"Maybe one of the Queen's card soldiers took her!" I suggest.
"Let's head back to the courtyard, I know the way!" Kairi replies, taking my hand.
It was a relief that someone knew.
The Queen was at her stand waiting for us. The card soldiers scowled when they noticed Kairi beside me.
"Where is Alice?" The Queen demands.
"She's not here!?" Kairi asks in disbelief.
"If she WAS, why would I be asking?" The Queen hissed.
"She must have been kidnapped!" Donald suggests.
The Queen's face grows very red. As red as an apple, her dark brows scrunch up in disgust.
"YOU FOOLS! FIND OUT WHO'S BEHIND THIS NOW! I DON'T CARE HOW!"
"At least take the evidence…." I say, placing the antennas on the defendants stand.
The Queen didn't seem pleased.
"FIND ALICE! THEN I SHALL DECIDE IF SHE'S GUILTY OR NOT! BUT AS FOR YOU!" She points at Kairi with a wide finger. "I'm feeling generous today, I'll forgive you for the fact you've escaped, BUT you BETTER find Alice or it will be your HEAD!"
Yeah, like I'd EVER let that happen.
Kairi nods poliety.
"Yes, your majesty." She then turns to me. "Maybe she's in the bizarre room hiding from the guards! Let's check!"
The Cheshire cat was lounging on the pink table once we entered the bizarre room where we drank the potions and met the doorknob. The Cheshire cat greeted us with one of us wide mischievous grins.
"You'll see the shadows soon. They'll arise in this room. Are you prepared for the worst?
A loud rattling sound came from above. The five of us looked up to see a tall lanky monster staring down at us with five rows of glowing yellow eyes. He hung from the ceiling like a spider before he leapt down to the ground in front of us, landing perfectly on two feet.
It had a total of ten eyes. Its head was made of several segments and alternating colors of red and black. In each of its spindly arms it held a pair of purple clubs. Its yellow eyes glowered as it towered over at us, slowly marching over to us menacingly. It's arms swinging the clubs in perfect sync.
"Maybe he took Alice!" Kairi whispered, as the four of us backed up from the monster slowly, as we summoned our weapons. It seemed that whenever there was danger our keyblades knew when to come to us.
The Cheshire cat giggled.
"Maybe! Maybe not! Battle it and find out!"
Then he was gone.
