Pressing the knife harder against Flynn's face, the masked woman's smile turned into a sneer. "You have a diamond I want. And you're going to give it to me."
"Ok, ok," Flynn said, trying to speak carefully lest he lose an eye. Or lest he gets his handsome face cut. And Flynn could not have that. "We can have the diamond."
"Good," Masked Lady said. "Where is it?"
"Why do you want it?" Rapunzel asked, sitting up in bed, pressing the blanket to her body.
"I just want it," she replied.
"I only ask because you must know what it does to people. And there's only a couple of ways someone could know that. You've either been spying on Moretti like I have. Or…" Rapunzel narrowed her eyes. "You're an Issain too."
Masked Lady gave a little bow and in so doing, the edge of her knife gently scraped against Flynn's face. He tried to remain still. "Guilty," she said, straightening back up. "Moretti, or as he's known back on my home planet, Mesanir, has been up to nothing but no good. I want to stop him. And to do that, I need to kill him. The easiest way to do that is with the diamond. So, hand it over."
"It's on that table over there." Rapunzel pointed to a simple desk in the corner of the room. "I put it in the top drawer."
Masked Lady smiled viciously. "See how easy that was? Oh, but to make sure you don't try to trick me, I'm going to have to do this."
She lifted the knife away from Flynn's face. He felt a moment of relief.
Until she jammed the knife straight into his stomach.
He groaned, jerking back but it was too late. The knife was sticking out of his stomach and it was enough to cause some serious fucking pain.
"Eugene," Rapunzel gasped, pressing the bedding against his wound.
Masked Lady giggled as she waltzed over to the table. When she opened the drawer and saw it empty, as Flynn knew she would, she turned back to them with a scowl on her face. "Where is it?"
"You're going to be ok," Rapunzel said to him as she tried tending to his wound. It wasn't bleeding too bad, which was a good sign. But that was also probably because he hadn't pulled the knife out yet. "If we get you to my tower, we can heal you."
"Where is it?" Masked Lady pressed another knife right against Flynn's throat.
"Ok." Rapunzel raised her hands. "Fine." With a deep sigh, she pointed towards the dresser.
"Rapunzel, don't," Flynn said.
"I need to save you," she said back. "It's in the top drawer. No tricks this time."
Masked Lady strode over to the drawer, opened it, and grabbed the diamond box. "Thank you for this. Toodle loo." She waggled her fingers at them before leaving the room.
"Come on," Rapunzel said, helping Flynn sit up. He groaned. She smacked his hand when he tried to pull out the knife. "Don't. Leave it in. It will help with the bleeding. My tower can heal you, remember? But we just need to walk there first."
"How far is it?" he asked through gritted teeth.
She scrunched her face up. "Probably about a fifteen-minute walk from here."
"Oh, is that all?"
"It's just fifteen minutes."
"Blondie, you're not the one with a damn knife sticking out of your stomach."
She kissed his cheek. "You'll be fine."
After they got dressed – which was not easy with a damn knife sticking out of his stomach – they left the mansion and headed out into the Venetian streets. Carnival was still in full swing, even in broad daylight, with people dressed in their finery best and masks.
If he and Rapunzel stood out before when they were soaking wet, Flynn knew they for sure stood out now. He had his shirt draped over his body so as to not disturb the knife and Rapunzel was still only in her shift, though she did have his jacket on her.
"How did she even find us?" Rapunzel mused as they made their way to her tower.
"I think there's a lot we don't know about our masked lady friend," he said. "But, Rapunzel, I'm about ready to pass out from the pain of having this damn knife in my freaking stomach. Maybe we can save the musing for later."
"Sorry. You're right."
She helped him walk as they moved through the narrow streets of Venice. Once Flynn saw her tower in the distance, the relief that coursed through him was palpable.
Once they were inside, Rapunzel helped him lie on the ground. "Remember: my tower will know how to heal you. Trust me. But I need to take the knife out."
He nodded, bracing himself for the pain. And holy shit, was there pain.
When Rapunzel ripped the knife out, Flynn thought he was going to die for a moment. The pain lasted a few moments. It was excruciating.
And then – it was all gone.
Flynn frowned and looked down at his body. There was no trace he had even been injured at all. Sure, he had seen it before but it was still shocking. "Holy shi-," he stopped. "Blondie, you're tower has magical powers."
"It is a time machine after all. It's already pretty incredible. And it's science, not magic."
"Do I even want to know how it works?" he asked, sitting up.
"Probably not."
A thought went through him. The image of Rapunzel dying in his arms when her tower could have easily saved her.
"Your tower doesn't have resurrection powers, does it?"
She stared at him for a moment before laughing. "No. Why would you ask that? It can only heal. It can't bring someone back from the dead."
So much for that idea. He laughed awkwardly. "No reason for asking. Just curious."
Even though he tried brushing it off, Flynn knew Rapunzel thought his line of questioning was strange. Just given the way she was looking at him, she knew something was up.
"Is there something you need to tell me, Eugene?"
"No," he said too quickly.
She place her hands on her hips. "Eugene."
Sighing, he stood back up, "It's nothing. Really. I was just honestly curious about its powers. You can't blame me for asking. There's still a lot I don't know about your tower and… well, you."
Her eyes darkened for a moment before returning to her more normal cheery self. "What do you want to know?" She slipped her arms around him. He felt instantly better that she was touching him. It meant she was still alive. Still here.
"Like is there anything else about your tower I should know about? Beyond just time travel and healing properties."
"Not much else, no. Well, it can sort of have a mind of its own at times."
He tensed. "What the hell does that mean?"
"It's not a big deal. Just if my tower felt like it was in danger, it might go into lockdown mode."
"What's lockdown mode?"
"No one could get in or out of it until it repaired itself. But we don't need to worry about that. My tower isn't in danger. We're fine. But we have a diamond we need to get back." She gave him a peck on the lips before pulling away from him.
He was still reeling over the implications of what exactly 'lockdown mode' meant that he had to shake himself to focus on the present issue at hand. "We don't even know where our masked lady friend is."
"No. But we can find her. Using this." She lifted up the bloody knife on the ground. "Masked Lady used it on you." She plugged the knife into her machine but instead of lighting up with a location, it spit the knife back out.
"That doesn't sound good," Flynn remarked.
"That's because this knife doesn't belong to the Masked Lady. She must have just grabbed it from somewhere."
"So, we can't track her with it?"
"Nope." She tossed the knife into the trashcan in her small kitchen. "We'll need to find another way to get to her. Then we'll get the diamond back and bring it to my tower. It can destroy the diamond so that way no one else can use it to hurt anyone again."
"Just a thought," Flynn said, holding up a finger. "If Masked Lady wants to kill Moretti, I say we let her. One less evil alien on the earth is a good thing."
"True. But we have to try to save as many as we can. Killing someone is the last resort."
"What if it's the only resort?"
She sighed. "Then, we come to that if we have to. But ideally, we steal the diamond back, destroy it, and leave Moretti and Masked Lady to go at each other. There's no way I'm bringing them back to their homeland. The kind of power they possess… they would only bring it back to Earth and hurt more people."
"You don't need to explain it to me, Blondie. You had me at 'steal the diamond back.'" He rubbed his hands together. "I'm not Flynn Rider unless I'm stealing something."
"That's why you're just Eugene in my eyes. But you're right. I need Flynn Rider today. Let's go steal ourselves a diamond."
The first step of a successful heist was finding the actual location of the diamond. But that was going to be tricky since they didn't even know where Masked Lady took the diamond and an even bigger problem – they didn't even know who Masked Lady was to even steal the diamond to begin with.
And it didn't help that it was Carnival and everyone was dressed in masks, deliberately hiding their identity.
"I have an idea," Flynn suggested, after they got dressed into new clothes. Rapunzel had a large wardrobe full of clothes from any time period. When he asked her about it, she just kissed him on the cheek and said it was part of the magic.
When he reminded her that she just said her tower was science, not magic, she only gave him another kiss on the cheek.
Rapunzel was slipping her mask into place. "What is it?"
"Well, we know two places Masked Lady has been to. We could ask around and see if anyone knows who she is. You could use your mirror to get people to talk to us. If they thought we were nobles or something, I'm sure they'd give us that information."
"That's a good idea. But the two places we know Masked Lady has been seen at are either the mansion we hid in until she found us and stabbed you. Or…"
"Moretti's mansion," Flynn finished. "I never said either was a good idea. But it gives us a place to start to at least learn who this woman is and where she lives. If she was smart, she took the diamond back to her place and is keeping it under lock and key. Once I know where it is, I can easily steal it back."
Rapunzel sighed. "Ok then. Let's go to the second mansion first. Moretti's mansion is a last resort."
"Probably a good idea."
Except there was one problem – when they got to the mansion they spent the night in and asked around, no one could say who Masked Lady was.
Not even the head of the household who was in awe of Rapunzel, still thinking she was Signora Contarini.
"I apologize, Signora," he said, still in a full-face mask from last night. "I don't know who this woman is that you speak of."
"She came into our room," Rapunzel said. "Did no one see her go in?"
The man shrugged. "I'm sorry. That's part of Carnival – everybody has secrets. We wear masks to keep those secrets. She could be anybody."
"That's all right." Rapunzel turned to Flynn. "I guess it's back to Moretti's house after all."
Flynn grimaced. "I guess so."
With heavy hearts, they set off to Moretti's mansion. That was one thing Flynn definitely didn't want to do.
They reached Moretti's mansion. A bustle of people were coming and going, all in masks. Even if they ran into Masked Lady, they wouldn't be able to tell her apart from anyone else.
They deliberately wore different colored clothing than yesterday. Rapunzel was in a deep purple gown while Flynn was back to wearing blue again compared to his all-black outfit he had on yesterday. He just hoped that Moretti would be too distracted with searching for his diamond to not even notice them.
Upon first glance of Moretti's mansion, Moretti wasn't anywhere to be seen. Nor was Masked Lady.
"I can't believe there's still so many people in here," Flynn said to Rapunzel in a low voice. "I mean, given the fact that he was literally going to torture everyone yesterday, I'm amazed anyone even came back."
"That's Carnival for you. People are willing to overlook almost anything for a good party. Let's split up. We can cover more ground."
He grabbed her arm. "Be careful."
"I always am." She gave him a quick kiss before heading out into the throng of people.
That's what Flynn was worried about. Rapunzel claimed she was always safe but he knew for a fact that wasn't always true.
He set off into the crowd in the opposite direction.
After asking around for a few minutes, it was clear no one knew who he was talking about. Especially when he could only describe Masked Lady as being a woman… wearing a mask. Which literally summed up half the population in Venice during Carnival.
Flynn slumped against a wall, feeling defeated. How were they going to even find this woman?
Someone patted his shoulder.
He turned around and there she was. Masked Lady.
He stood up straight. "What are you doing here?"
Her blood-red lips curled into a wicked smile. "I just wanted to thank you for giving me the diamond. It seems that you healed up nice and fast. How about that."
"What is your plan?" he asked.
"My plan? Well, you'll just have to wait and see, wont you. But unlike my male counterpart, I have no desire to kill innocent people. I just want to kill Moretti than use that same power to take over Venice. Simple."
"I'm fine with you killing Moretti. The guy's a jackass. But that kind of power shouldn't be in anyone's hands."
"Well, don't know what to tell you." She shrugged. "I have that power now. And no one is getting rid of it. Not you. And especially not Moretti."
"Is that why you're here? To kill Moretti?"
"No, darling. I'm here to party. Care to dance again?"
Flynn was about to say no when he thought of something. If he could grab something of Masked Lady's then he and Rapunzel could use it to track her. She could take them straight to where she was keeping the diamond without her even knowing it.
"I'd love to dance," he said, taking her hand in his.
She looked surprised for a moment until her wicked smile returned. "Delightful." They walked onto the dance floor together. "Let's give everyone a show."
Flynn pulled her into his arms. "Let's." They began waltzing around the dance floor with the other couples.
When Flynn dipped her, Masked Lady trailed a finger down his cheek. "I think we might be making your girlfriend jealous."
Flynn straightened back up and continued waltzing with Masked Lady. His eyes caught Rapunzel on the edge of the dance floor, watching them with confusion.
Trust me, he mouthed to Rapunzel when he spun Masked Lady out so she couldn't see.
Rapunzel nodded slightly.
Masked Lady melted back into his arms and they continued their dance.
"You're a marvelous dancer," she said.
"You told me that already. Remember? It was just yesterday."
"Was it? How time flies."
"It really does." Flynn pulled her in close and stopped dancing. She stared up at him with sultry eyes. "You know what else I'm good at?"
"What?" She trailed her fingers up and down his chest.
"Taking things that don't belong to me." He ripped her mask off.
She gasped and stumbled back, clutching at her face. While she was distracted, he threw the mask at Rapunzel, who caught it with deft accuracy.
"Sorry about that," Flynn said, running after Rapunzel as they left the ballroom. The last thing he heard was the screech of Masked Lady before the mansion doors shut behind them.
"Let's hurry," Rapunzel said, running with ease in her large gown. "I don't want another fight in the canals."
"Right there with you, Blondie."
They made it back to the tower with no problems. Rapunzel plugged the mask into her machine and it gave her a location. "Now we know where Masked Lady lives."
"Time to finally steal the diamond?" he asked.
"Yes. But don't sound too happy about it. We're not keeping it."
"I wouldn't dream of it."
She rolled her eyes. "Sure."
Flynn could only laugh.
Masked Lady's house was in the nicer area of the city. Not a mansion like the ones they had been to already but still a nice house. But getting inside would be tricky since it was wedged in between two other houses. The only way in would be through the front door or…
"You are not going to scale from the roof down inside the house," Rapunzel said as they scoped the house out.
"But it's a great way to break into a place. Masked Lady might catch us if we go in through the front door. But she won't be expecting us if we go in through the ceiling."
"How are you even going to get up there?"
"I've scaled a lot of buildings in my day," he said.
She huffed. "Eugene, I wouldn't be too proud of that fact."
"Why not? It's impressive."
Sighing, she nodded. "Fine. You're the thief expert here. If you think going in through the top floor is best, that's what we'll do."
So, that's what they did.
"So, what you're going to want to do," Flynn said, ready to give Rapunzel some climbing tips, "is-,"
"I got this," she said, walking right past him. And, like the badass she was, began to climb up the side wall of the house. It wasn't actually Masked Lady's house they were going to climb. It was her neighbor's house and from there, they were going to get to Masked Lady's house and break in.
The wall had pieces of brick sticking out that they used to climb. In addition with the window sills that could give them an extra boost, they made it up the wall without any issues.
Well, that was until they were almost to the top.
Rapunzel made it onto the roof with ease but for Flynn that was a different matter.
When he reached his hand out to grasp a brick, his fingers slipped. Before he could even yell, Rapunzel grabbed his hand, holding him suspended in air.
Flynn chuckled awkwardly. "So, uh, this wasn't supposed to happen."
She gave him a look as she helped pull him onto the roof. "And I thought you were supposed to be the expert."
He dusted off the front of his jacket. "Even experts can make mistakes sometimes."
"Uh-huh." She patted his arm. "Whatever makes yourself feel better, Eugene."
He deigned to respond as they moved from one roof to the next. Masked Lady's house was a sandy colored brick. There was no windows on the roof for them to sneak into but there were windows on the upper floor just below them.
They leaned over the edge.
"This seems dangerous," Rapunzel said.
"Says the girl who routinely runs into danger."
She shot him a smile. "Says the boy who routinely runs after me to make sure I'm all right."
He smiled back. "Well, someone has to."
She nodded at the window below them. "Let's get in there."
"I got this, Blondie. I've been in this position many times."
"We're going to need to have a talk about your thieving days, Eugene."
"Don't worry. I've put that behind me." The moment he said it, he knew how true it was. "Well, other than today. But this is an exception."
He grunted as he gripped the ledge of the roof and lowered his body off of it. Using momentum, he kicked at the window on the top floor and it opened. Still swinging his body, Flynn trusted his instincts and let go of the ledge, dropping through the window and into the house.
"Rapunzel, I've got you." He held out his arms.
But she didn't need his help.
Doing the same exact thing he just did, she made it into the house with ease.
"Huh," he said, rubbing his chin.
Rapunzel stood there, looking proud of herself with her hands on her hips. "And I did it in a dress too," she said.
"Showoff," he muttered.
"Let's go find the diamond," she whispered.
They set off into the halls of the Masked Lady's house.
Rapunzel didn't feel nervous as she walked beside Eugene. He had a way of calming her that no one else could do. She thought back to their night before when they slept together. It was magical and beautiful and everything she could have hoped for.
Because she knew that was the last time they'd ever do that.
She knew it was Eugene's first time with them as a couple, which meant that it would be her last with him. The thought made her terribly sad and she didn't want to be thinking about it as they were sneaking through the scary, dark halls of the Masked Lady's house.
But she was.
She remembered her first time with him – her very first time with anyone. She didn't want to tell Eugene that he was her first and only. He'd figure it out when the time came. When he moved on to his future and met her past self.
She felt almost jealous of her past self for getting to experience everything with Eugene all over again while she had to move forward, reaching closer and closer to the end. There would come a day he wouldn't recognize her and she thought it might kill her.
But now wasn't the time to think about that. They had a diamond to steal and steal it they would. If it meant protecting hundreds, if not thousands of people, Rapunzel would steal anything in a heartbeat.
They didn't run into anyone as they delved deeper into the house. It was almost eerie how quiet everything was. The quiet would only make it easier for the Masked Lady to hear them.
They reached the top of the stairs and Eugene put his hand up, silently telling her to stop. Voices trickled up from downstairs.
A man and a woman.
"I hear you're looking for your diamond," the familiar voice of the Masked Lady said.
"I am," responded Moretti's deeper baritone.
"What if I told you I could help get it back for you?"
"Then that would be the best news I've heard all day."
Eugene motioned for them to start walking down the stairs. If the Masked Lady was already with Moretti, then she surely had the diamond on her. She wanted him dead, at least that's what she claimed.
Rapunzel had to stop her from activating the diamond. If she did, not only would she kill Moretti, but she could kill her and Eugene too and who knows who else. She wouldn't be too mad if Moretti died since he was torturing people. She just couldn't let someone have access to so much power that the diamond possessed.
They reached the bottom of the stairs. Rapunzel could hear the voices coming from the next room over.
Eugene walked with stealth as he approached the archway leading to the room Masked Lady and Moretti were in. Rapunzel followed behind. Sneaking a peek into the other room, she saw that it was a dining room.
Masked Lady, who had a mask back on her face, was situated at the head of the table and Moretti was on the other end.
"She has the diamond on her," Rapunzel whispered to Eugene. "How are we going to get it?"
Eugene turned to her with a smirk. "Cause a distraction." With those words, he sauntered into the room with confidence.
The two aliens sat up straighter.
"What are you doing here?" Masked Lady demanded.
"Give me my diamond back!" Moretti also demanded.
Eugene shrugged. "I don't have it." He pointed at Masked Lady. "She does."
Masked Lady laughed. "That's ridiculous. I don't have it."
Moretti turned to her slowly. "If you have my diamond, you're going to pay."
Eugene walked right over to Masked Lady and, with deft hands, grabbed the diamond box right out of a pocket in her dress. "Is this what you're looking for?" He held the box up for Moretti to see.
Moretti's eyes gleamed dangerously. "Give it to me."
"Don't give it to him," Masked Lady growled.
Eugene shrugged. "I don't really need it." He tossed the box at Moretti, who caught it. "Have fun you two."
Masked Lady practically jolted herself across the table to slam into Moretti. They scrambled over the box.
Eugene grabbed Rapunzel's arm once he was out of the dining room. "We should hurry."
"Hurry? You just gave them the diamond."
"Did I?" He held up a large, sparkling diamond in his hand. "I swiped it from the box before they even noticed. Am I a thief or am I thief?"
She gave him a quick kiss. "You are a thief. Let's go."
They hurried out of Masked Lady's house and made their way back to the tower.
But there quickly became a problem.
"Stop those two!" roared Moretti's voice over the Venice streets. When Rapunzel looked over her shoulder, she saw Moretti and Masked Lady running towards them.
"I guess they realized the diamond wasn't in there," Eugene remarked.
"We need to move. Now!"
They linked their hands together and ran through the street, bypassing people in masks. Some were drunk and stumbled into them. Some were selling things and tried stuffing fake necklaces in front of their faces. Others were just out partying.
They came across a large group of people dancing in the street. Rapunzel had to wade through them, knowing that the slower she went, the easier it would be for the two aliens to catch them.
A man bumped into Rapunzel and sent her toppling to the ground.
"Rapunzel," Eugene said, running back to her.
"You have the diamond," she said. "Keep going."
"Not without you and you know it." He helped her back up and they continued through the crowd.
She could feel the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. The Issains were getting closer.
A jaunt group of people were dancing in a long line. One of them grabbed Rapunzel and dragged her into the lineup.
"I can't," she said but they just ignored her.
She spotted Moretti the moment he spotted her. He began walking towards her with a scary determination. She saw what he did to people. Rapunzel did not want to be on the receiving end of a torture device by a crazy alien.
Trying to free herself from the hands of the other dancers, Rapunzel was struggling.
Moretti was only a couple of feet away.
Eugene ran out from the crowd and barreled right into Moretti, sending him sprawling to the ground. But before he could celebrate, Masked Lady jumped onto his back.
With a grunt, Rapunzel freed herself from the dancers and ran over to Eugene. She pushed Masked Lady of him and she toppled to the ground.
Eugene gave her a nod of thanks before they resumed running.
Her tower was close. She could always sense it within her when it was nearby. They just had to reach it in time.
When the tip of her tower could be seen over the rooftops, Rapunzel let out a cry of joy.
That was until someone slammed into her from behind. Masked Lady. She grabbed Rapunzel around the waist and threw her to the ground. Rapunzel winced as her entire side body hit the hard stone.
Masked Lady stood over her with a vicious smile. "You thought you could steal what's rightfully mine?"
"Don't you mean it's rightfully mine?" Moretti asked, coming into view. "That's my diamond."
"No, it's mine," Masked Lady said, turning to him.
"No, it's mine."
Masked Lady huffed. "You are insufferable."
"And you're a bitch."
She gasped, then slapped him across the face. It made his mask fall off. His scarred face was on full display for everyone to see. Masked Lady looked incredibly sure of herself. Moretti slapped her back. Then she slapped him. Then he slapped her.
As the two of them were fighting, Eugene helped Rapunzel back up and they took off for her tower.
They reached it and hurried inside.
"So, how do we destroy it?" Eugene asked, handing her the diamond.
Rapunzel placed it into the machine on her desk. "My tower will know what to do."
Eugene walked over to the windows on the front side of the tower. "Uh, Blondie. It looks like we have company."
She ran over to see. Masked Lady and Moretti were heading straight for her tower. "They can't get in."
"No. But I'm sure they're going to try."
The tower began to shake. Rapunzel stumbled into Eugene's arms.
"What's happening?" he asked, clutching her tightly. It warmed her heart that he was so protective.
"It's destroying the diamond."
The tower shook so violently, her teeth chattered. Her and Eugene ended up sitting on the ground to avoid getting hurt.
And as suddenly as the tower started shaking, it stopped.
Rapunzel stood up on shaky legs and walked over to her desk. The diamond was resting there, looking completely the same.
"That doesn't look destroyed," Eugene commented.
"I think my tower got rid of it's power. It can't hurt anyone ever again."
"Shall we tell those two outside?"
"We can make them fight over it."
Eugene chuckled as he drew her into his arms. "That's vicious, Blondie. Are you sure you're the same person?"
"I can surprise you, you know."
"Oh, I know," he said in a deeper voice. It send shivers over her.
They kissed for a moment before pulling apart.
"No, I have a better idea for what I want to do with them," she said, taking Eugene's mask off and setting it down. "We can't send them back to their planet. They'll only bring destruction to Earth if they were to come back."
"So, what's the plan?"
"I'm going to keep them on Earth but send them to the past to somewhere much more remote so they can't hurt any more people." She slipped her own mask off.
"Sounds good to me. But how are we going to get them in your tower without them causing problems?"
"I have my ways," she responded.
A few minutes later, she stepped outside her tower and came face to face with Moretti and Masked Lady.
"Here's your diamond," she said, tossing it to them.
They began to fight over it. While they were distracted, she used a bottle of perfume she kept in her tower in case of emergencies. She didn't like using it on people because it felt wrong. The reason – it could knock anyone unconscious. But right now, it would do the trick.
She spritzed some of the perfume onto them and it made them immediately flop to the ground, eyes closed, breathing heavy.
Eugene stepped up behind her. "That's some pretty powerful stuff. How come you didn't use it on-," he stopped.
"Use it on who?"
He cleared his throat. "Never mind."
She knew in that moment he was talking about something in his past that was in her future.
She deigned to respond as it would only make things more awkward. They brought the two aliens into her tower, tied them up, and took off into the past.
The year 986 to be exact. To the remoteness of Greenland.
"Why Greenland?" Eugene asked.
"It's a harsh climate and wasn't heavily populated. They shouldn't be able to do much damage back in this time. And with limited human resources, they won't be able to get their hands on magical diamonds that can kill people on sight."
While the two aliens were still unconscious, Rapunzel and Eugene carried them out one-by-one. Even though it was summertime, there was still a chill in the air. They were on the southern coast which was quite grassy but still had a lot of rock outcroppings and rough terrain.
They placed Masked Lady down beside Moretti.
"I need to know what she looks like," Eugene said, taking off Masked Lady's mask.
Her face was smooth and unblemished compared to Moretti. She looked… perfectly normal.
"Huh," Eugene said. "That's disappointing." He tossed the mask onto her body.
They turned to go back to the tower when the rumble of hoofbeats sounded out over the air. The ground began to shake.
A spike of panic went through Rapunzel. "We need to run."
"Why?" Eugene asked.
"Because I think I know who's coming and we don't want to run into them." They ran off towards the tower but with the rough terrain, it made it hard.
"Why didn't we just stay close to the tower?" Eugene asked.
"Because I didn't want to risk Moretti and Masked Lady somehow getting back on."
"Well, I think we're about to have other guests soon."
And they did.
Before they reached the tower, horses appeared over the top of the ridge and came running towards them.
And on top of them were men covered in furs with wild hair and beards.
Rapunzel and Eugene were forced to stop as the men on horses surrounded them.
"Take the fort, my men!" shouted a man with red hair who was clearly the leader of the group.
His men surrounded the tower, pointing spears at it.
Eugene leaned in close to Rapunzel. "Blondie, I think I have an idea who these people are but I don't want to say it."
And she knew why.
These men were Vikings.
And they just commandeered her tower.
Until Saturday!
