I own nothing save Bill and this island and overall concept for the world-building. Please enjoy for free.
Tails brought his own inventions to show Bill, when they met again. My little fox had created something that flew for him when he pulled a string, a pair of scales to weigh things, and a cup inside a dish with grooves, which showed him the mass of things when he filled the cup with water and dropped them into it. They made Bill even more impressed with him.
Soon Tails was working alongside Bill with parts from fallen apart invasion ships and weapons were brought to them on ships by warriors from other islands. After Bill taught him the names of tools and alien ship parts, Tails did not forget them. Indeed, he learned to identify them not only on sight, but by the sound of them running, and even from their sharp, nauseating, or even pleasant smells ... especially when they were overheating.
I was allowed to watch, so my feathers rose much in those days not from cold but whenever I could feel the heat of what my young little fox was working on with Bill even from where I was tethered. Coils, gears, flaps, and engines appeared before my eyes carried often by strong warriors. They were directed at first only by Bill. Soon though, my fox also began to give them orders. This saved time as Bill directed one group doing one task while Tails directed another. At first, the great warriors frowned following Tails orders. Then they saw how much faster the projects progressed and Bill grin at my little fox and call him a genius. Soon, they served under Tails with stoic faces also rather than just glares. I'd never seen my Fox cub so happy as in those days. My Tail's heart beat fast with excitement and mine with fear as he worked with new things. I learned a little watching and listening to him and Bill. I was never allowed to help, though.
Tails and Bill learned how to put things from different planets together so they would interact with each other sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse as it turned out. They created not only new, but quite dangerous things during these "experiments" of theirs. Realizing this, the council voted to build a mud hut with thick high walls to contain the results of these experiments. When it was finished, I was not allowed inside, so I could no longer even watch. Tails left me after he ate in the morning and came to me to eat in the evening talk a little to me and fall asleep. Though he was still small, I felt my Fox cub had grown up and almost completely left me. I was proud and sad.
One day, a hurricane hit the island and most of us on the island. Tails stayed with me that day as we merely tried to stay dry and hoped to stay alive. As the wind died down, Tails whispered something to me. Days earlier I'd seen him return to me with wide eyes and unsteady steps. I assumed he and Bill had discovered something that disturbed or at least astounded even their genius minds. What my Tails whispered to me had happened that day boggled mine. "Longclaw, I can fly ..."
